This place offers so much to our community its really hard to begin diving into it so abruptly. Go to their website and look at their schedule of events. They offer services for everyone. They help our community with health issues and social issues all throughout the week. First of all, their staff is all lgbt-friendly, and usually members of the community themselves. You feel comfortable talking to people there. Sometimes they display and even auction off artwork that was created by members of the LGBT community. Theres a beautiful piano in there that you can hear serenading the atmosphere. Theres a cafe on the main floor is as well as a few event rooms and staff offices. Below the main floor is a library with books focusing on LGBT issues. On the second floor, there are meeting rooms and offices for staff. Each day of the week they hold community support groups in these meeting rooms. I have been going to the transgender life support as well as the crossroads one for years. Both of them have been instrumental in getting me out of my shell and living my life authentically. Honestly, I cannot tell you that I would be here today without this organization. I know it is saved my life on several different occasions. Give it a try even if youre just debating the idea, go in there and check it out. Its super laid-back and everyone is so chill and wants to help YOU!
VERY LGBT+ friendly, acknowledges non-binary genders, trans people can get help with legally transitioning, staff is very nice and friendly, and the inside of the place is beautiful. Also theres a library with lots of LGBT related books. Granted lots are outdated but still pretty nice.
This is a very supportive place, all inclusive and accepting. I remember Affirmations being there for my LGBTQ+ friends and family members waaaaay back in the early 90s, when there was literally nowhere for the community to turn to and feel safe, where they belonged. If your in the LGBTQ+ community, you can find refuge and understanding here, as well as resources for just about anything you need!
This is one of the coolest places for teens of all backgrounds. Wake Up had an event at Affirmations regarding HIV awareness for teens. I am glad we went!Affirmations is a great non-profit catering to teens of various sexual preferences. The building is an art gallery and open to many counseling groups, teen chats, etc.Go take a look at the program options for your teen today!
There are lots of great programs at Affirmations. The center is an aesthetically pleasing space right in downtown Ferndale, and the staff is always friendly, helpful, and professional. They also offer services you might not be aware of, like a public notary. They can also direct you to resources in the local community.
One of few places I would rate above five stars of I could. Unparalleled work with the community, offering services (primarily for LBGT youth) such as STI testing, physicals and guidance. Had a small eatery, a library, public computer and a game room! Truly caring staff tops this place off as one of the most wonderful places I have ever been.
Affirmations is an organization that does great service in the community. A safe, walk-in place for youth; particularly to people, of all ages, who may not have an accepting place ; long open hours, welcoming environs; a good range of support services; and a positive reputation/ brand in the local area for services and support to lgbtq+ persons . I was first introduced to this orgzn 3 yrs ago when my child expressed gender-issues and enrolled in a seminar/ workshop at Affirmations, in a program that was 1-to-2 days a week for 4 months or so. They (my child) has gone back there since to help others and self. My wife and I started our journey of learning how to support our child (and others) partly with the exposure to Affirmations, people like then-director of youth programs, Liliana, and program coordinator, Tevin. Good people, committed people who do good work. The Affirmations people are dear community people all around. My submission to big and small businesses in the area, and individuals who get exposed to organizations like this - please support the orgzn, a good clean facility and support services require funds.
Enjoyable place with respectful missions! However, I had a terrible experience with one of the group sessions, and I havent been back since. At the start of this group, there were about 8 people. At the end, there were about 40. It was so disrespectful for around 32 people to waltz in late and not be bothered. Some people were over an hour late. Its disrespectful because as the introductions go around, the people who come in late dont hear the peoples introductions who were here on time. The session leader was okay, but the leader deferred to an old-timer in the group who was disrespectful about my name. The one time I asked a question, it was met with disrespect from that old-timer. It was embarrassing, to say the least, especially in front of the entire group. Nobody asked each others pronouns, and I thought that was terrible, especially in a transgender-focused group.
Affirmations is one of the most comprehensive community centers for LGBTQ youth in the country. Their staff and volunteers are lovely and their programming is truly unparalleled. Im not exaggerating when I say that Affirmations has improved countless lives--and saved many, as well. The world is a better place because this organization exists.
When I volunteered here they mismanaged the volunteers. There were power struggles between the staff of the youth program and the volunteer coordinator that affected the volunteers and youth. I was also not allowed to present my side of situations and automatically written off as incorrect. The overall atmosphere when I walked in was unfriendly due to a their staff member allowing their personal life to affect their place of work. Even to receive my volunteer badge took 3 months when other volunteers got it within a week. While Affirmations hosts many wonderful groups like Transcend the Binary and FTM Detroit I would not recommend volunteering unless you like extra unneeded stress.
The first time I was in here with some friends 4 this African guy to do a lot of artwork my friends have walked around and try to talk to people the people was not not sociable and they had a prize giveaway for its different artwork and when I want a big art piece that everyone wanted to talk to me I dont like phoniness so Im giving another chance you know cuz first impressions you know dont mean everything
Affirmations fulfills my mom(s) Sue Pittmann and Chris Pucketts dream of celebrating all kinds of love and providing support to the LGBTQ community. Recently, I visited Affirmations and saw an entire section near the Pittmann/Puckett Art Gallery that displayed posters of peoples feelings about the Orlando shootings. I knew that good supportive work is being done here. Though my mothers were murdered in a hate crime in 1992, Im overjoyed that their legacy lives on in Affirmations.

2022-03-13I called Affirmations to get some help for my transgender child last week and the lady I spoke to took her time explaining what resources are available and I had so many questions! I called again today for more information and spoke with her again and was once again helped beyond what I expected. I did not get her name, and she has an English accent. I am so impressed at how she took her time to help me. This is all new to me and I used the resources she gave me which helped me a lot. So grateful for a place like Affirmations!! Thank you and Keep doing all the good work!!!!

2019-05-31I participated in a an Interfaith Pride Service with a theme of The Spiritually of Stonewall as the beginning of Ferndale Pride. There seems to be a renewed sense of passion and purpose at Affirmations. I was warmly greeted by David Garcia who has recently been hired as Executive Director, a position he held several years ago. I like him and his energy. I am hopeful that things have turned a corner at Affirmations. And I have a strong sense that they have.

2019-11-29A staple in the queer community for years. I have been going here for 20 years and have loved watching it grow into what it is. I go play the piano in the lobby whenever i can. Usual they are displaying local queer artists work in the lobby which doubles as a beautiful art gallery. This place is very community oriented and very welcoming.

2018-10-19For a non-profit organization they are decent & they try, will give them at least that. All though I must admit Affirmations is STILL a blessing in many ways for the LGBT community. Love it there. Very close to where I live as well. If your a member of the LGBT community you should definitely give this place a shot. Better than nothing & Affirmations is definitely WORTH IT. VERY GLAD that I go to Affirmations. Still attending functions after a year & hope to attend more in the future. HAPPY & PROUD member of the LGBT community. I HAPPILY give Affirmations 5 stars. :-)
