So I walked in this place expecting to feel animosity because I came as a novice from another local team; and there was none. I felt nothing but welcomed. The coaches do amazing job of making sure that everybody knows the moves perfectly, they will take the time to show you what you need to know over and over again until you can do it right. The Gis that they give you when you sign up are very high quality. But the best part of all: is that I get to go train and I know that my money goes to supporting Veterans and Leos. They work with companies like adopt a cop and we defy so they can sponsor athletes who would not get to join a team otherwise
Coach Maloney is an excellent jiu-jitsu instructor. He is very good at explaining the moves, and then once everyone is doing the technique, he takes the time to make sure everyone gets it. I felt welcome, and the place was nice and clean too. Everyone was very friendly. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who lives in the Downriver area. There are even pictures of each basic jiu-jitsu position out in the hallway for those who dont know them yet, which I think is really cool, and the prices of the gis he sells when you sign up are extremely affordable. All around five stars.
This place is pretty awesome. There are a bunch of highly experienced grapplers there, and I was offered plenty of assistance in understanding the appropriate way to execute the drills. Jeff is a nice and welcoming guy, with tons of coaching experience, including leading a competitive middle school wrestling team for several years. He has the patience and experience necessary to help you on your journey from beginner to advanced level grappler. We worked a half guard weave pass, and an advanced kimura that will definitely help my game (I love the kimura). Im happy they opened up this humble den in my old stomping ground, and Im happy to know Ill be back to train again with these kind killers on a weekly basis. I recommend this gym for grapplers of any experience level in the downriver area. They also have competitive pricing (and their graphic is fking sweet!)!!
I came in after a few years of combatives training and a few months of training with a culty jiu-jitsu gym with poor coaching skills and very limited drills, exercises and techniques.Within the first hour of class at Bears Den, I loved the coaching method, the techniques, drills and skills were absolutely new to me, the people are friendly and willing to teach, the atmosphere is just 100% better. It’s a smaller room but I rather enjoyed that.Anytime I was unsure or confused there was a student or coach willing to run it through with me every which way until I got it.On top of all this, it’s cheaper than every Jiu-Jitsu membership than I’ve ever encountered and best of all NO CONTRACTS. No culty business tricks of pulling you in an office to swindle you into an overpriced year long membership and having to wear strictly the gym-name patches on all your gear, none of that. I was told they plan to stay in Wyandotte but move to a larger location AND they have a discounted price for veterans and there’s sponsored memberships if you’re a disabled veteran.Hands down best jiu jitsu/grappling gym in downriver.
Bears Den is a great place to learn, grow and have some fun with good people. Coach Maloney has coached me in wrestling since 7th grade through high school and to be able to return many years later and be immersed in a similar atmosphere and see some old faces is amazing. I think its something everyone should try and a group of people everyone should be around if you want to be part of something special, get fit and learn a new skill. He also offers kids classes for wrestling and jiu-jitsu that my 3 little brothers attend. They give it 5 stars as well. Sign up the whole family.
I was able to drop in for a class with Coach Jeff Maloney. Jeff has extensive knowledge in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, creating a unique grappling experience. Great place to check out if you want to become an overall better grappler. Jeff is great working with you if it’s your first day or if you have years of experience and need some tips. I would definitely recommend checking this place out! Great for experience in BJJ, wrestling and MMA grappling.
Coach Maloney is awesome, he is passionate in everything he does and it shows with his way of teaching wrestling and Jujitsu. The best part about this place is the value and the instruction. Not only does dad get to roll around there are classes for the kids for both wrestling and jujutsu. I can’t recommend this place enough and excited to see to it grow.
I have over 25 years in wrestling and martial arts. I have met very few people with as much love and passion for the sports of wrestling and jiu jitsu as Professor Jeff at the Bear’s Den. Add years of competition and coaching experience, a dedicated team of assistant coaches, and a great environment to train in, the Bear’s Den is a fantastic place to learn grappling and self defense whether you are a beginner or someone who has been rolling for decades.
Stopped in this past Sunday for an open mats at 11 AM that they hold every Sunday. I was really grateful for a team that’s so focused on education and light hearted ness on and off the mat. They’ll make you feel safe, welcome to learn, and be apart of the team which is what makes any team and especially this team great to be around. If you’re looking for a place to learn a new discipline or generally just get more out of yourself by learning what limits you want to test, you can find right here.
Jeff is a high quality relaxed instructor who really helps work with you when you dont understand a technique. The entire club gives off a very welcoming non judgemental vibe. All the members Ive met are very welcoming and friendly as well . My wife just tried BJJ for the first time and she feels very welcomed here.Come in and I promised youll get addicted ☺️
I’ve trained at multiple gyms throughout my life, many different coaches and personalities all around. They all have good things to offer, but Jeff and the Bears Den coaching staff is second to none! There is no better place to train around here. The whole team made me feel like family from the moment I walked in. The instruction is top notch and the friendly but hard working vibe on the mats is welcoming to anyone who comes in. Stop procrastinating and come learn from the best around. You’ll never regret becoming a better version of yourself and the Bears Den team will help get you there!
This academy is amazing! With a laid back yet competitive environment, top-notch instruction, variety of classes like kids wrestling or jiujitsu classes, adult jiujitsu during the day or at night, or adult striking classes, with a variety of instructors who bring real value to the table, bears den has got it all and I am so glad I signed up here! The classes are structured in a way that actually helps the students remember what we are learning and there is lots of room for asking questions and furthering YOUR game. My jiujitsu has grown immensely and the support from my team is unmatched, I love this place and if you’re thinking about checking it out I would 100% go, even if it’s just to try it out, you won’t regret it!

2022-02-16My three children trained here and they really excelled and shows so much improvement in their skills in Jiujitsu and Wrestling. They dont know anything about wrestling and Jiujitsu when they start coming here.We really appreciate the Bears Den Coaching Team for helping all the kids acquired skills that will help their life.I believed this is one of the life skills children must have to help them develop to become a well-rounded and well trained and becoming discipline adults and citizens (hopefully) in the future.

2022-04-24Havent been in a while, and havent even been there that long either, but I still wanna show support for the gym. Training partners are great, everyone wants to help others get better. Coaches know what theyre talking about. You dont even have to be there long to feel youre part of something, the people here are like one big family, if you wanna do jiu-jitsu or mma, I highly recommend you train here.

2022-02-16Youre not going to find a better grappling academy downriver whether youre a hobbyist or a competitor. Youll be treated with respect and like family while learning a discipline that will improve every area of your life.

2021-05-05I have known and been an athlete (wrestling) of Coach Jeffs for most of my life and I couldnt ask for a better mentor, teacher, and friend. He is a great teacher and takes time to go over the details of each move/position to ensure his athletes can be confident about the techniques. I plan on training with the Bears Den team any time I return to the area. If I still lived Downriver I wouldnt think twice about going anywhere else. As far as the youth grappling component goes, I was in middle school when Coach Jeff came into my life as a wrestling coach and we were apart of a very successful program and he is still a great support system as a 25 year old. I do not have children but I couldnt think of another person Id want to send them to.

2021-04-11I trained Jiu-Jitsu as a white belt somewhere else, then transferred here after receiving my blue belt. The way the coaches interact with students is incredible, they are patient and really work with people to help them evolve in the sport. Constantly fine-tuning my every movement. The prices are phenomenal, awesome environment. My guard game is quickly improving thanks to the coaches at Bears Den.
