I really enjoyed my visit here, although it was very brief. If you love tropical plants, are looking for a cute place to take photos, or just want to get away without the cost of a plane ticket---look no further! Come enjoy this Detroit gem.

The hours listed here are incorrect. The aquarium is open Saturday and Sunday. 10Am to 4pm. We love the aquarium. Its a great free place to visit. They always have great educational presentations for children, its next to the beautiful indoor gardens, and close to the great lakes museum and belle isle zoo. The beach on belle isle rocks too. I love taking my kids here. You can spend an entire day even if the weather is bad!

We live about 3 hours away from Detroit and went visited the Belle Isle Aquarium to kill sometime before a church service. This place is very talked about, and they made it sound super amazing. However when I heard the words aquarium I was thinking more big & lots of fish. Its a very small place, and most of the fish in there are native fish. Theres like maybe 5 that are salt water fish and the tanks are window size. It gets crowded and the place has no ventilation whats so ever so it will get tight and warmer in there. Its a cute place but definitely not what I expected. They also have a garden attached which was lovely! I enjoyed that more than the actual aquarium. Its not a terrible place to visit. It is beautiful but dont expect too much I guess. ☺

The gardens and the island are overall absolutely beautiful! The aquarium is a different story. While very interesting in terms of architecture and history, the state of the tanks and their inhabitants is very sad. You truly get a feel for what an aquarium might have been like years ago, but that comes at the cost of the fishs well being. Many of the tanks were far to small for the fish inside and inadequately cleaned and maintained. Many fish were lethargic seemed very unhealthy. Some are living in a tank not much larger than themselves! Its nice to have a free place for everyone to come appreciate nature and wildlife, but if charting a small admission would better the accommodations for the animals I would gladly pay it!

Wonderful. Part of my childhood. Fantastic to see the heroic SUBURBAN volunteers who have resurrected this beautiful landmark after the sleazy Kwame and Detroits sick ghetto stewardship shut it down and nearly led all Belle Isle to ruin. The aquarium is free and more and more displays are being stocked. The Conservatory and Nature Zoo are also free and not to be missed.

The information on this site is incorrect. The Belle Isle Aquarium is located at Inselruhe and Conservantory Way right next to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. The hours for the Aquarium are Friday, Saturday and Sunday only from 10 am until 4 pm. This is a wonderful place that is run by a volunteer staff through the Belle Isle Conservancy. The address and information on W. Jefferson Avenue showing on Google is actually for the Conservancys office. The Aquarium is a wonderful place to bring the entire family. They are still growing and since September 2012 when this group reopened the building they have gone from about 15 exhibit tanks of fish to about 50.

Great history and under appreciated gem of Detroit. How many people know it is the oldest aquarium in North America? It is still a work in progress getting it to its former grandeur, but the volunteers are doing a great job.
