Unique space in Berkley that serves American dishes with a twist like Japenese buns, Cauliflower Korean BBQ Wings and Lobster Grilled Cheese. They also have a large assortment of local draft beers. Most dishes are shareable but large enough for individual meals. When the weather is good they open the front windows to bring the outdoors in. Overall great space and one of the rare places you can find the Wizard of Oz pinball table.
Ive lived 5 minutes away from this place for about a year now and I tried it out for the first time a week ago. Now Im kicking myself for having slept on it.The menu has a decent selection of beers and many Korean inspired dishes, all of which I want to try. I highly suggest getting the kimchi fries as an appetizer. All in all, it has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in the Berkeley/Royal Oak! Go here!
Overall the space was nice and the food was decent. My criticism is this: why do restaurants nowadays feel the need to add sugar where it doesnt belong? Examples: Brussels sprouts with a balsamic reduction, mixed green blue cheese salad has candied nuts, wedge salad has cherries and an orange vinaigrette, even the cauliflower puree in their dishes tasted sweet. Sugar is fine in moderation but I dont need it in my dinner. Bobcat Bonnies has the same thing going on. Weve got an obesity epidemic in this country and all this sugar doesnt help. My European friends have commented on all of the unnecessary sugar in U.S. food. If I wanted sweet for dinner Id eat a donut but definitely dont expect it in a salad or veggie puree
This is a cool bar with a community feel. The selection of beer is decent, but wont blow your mind. The beer they do offer is quite good, which is especially welcoming at a time when the quality of many microbreweries is declining. The food is particularly good here. Its a surprisingly complex marriage of regions without trying to be too different. The quality is a solid 8/10, and serves to add to an already positive experience.Im looking forward to going back.
A must visit!! The food was amazing!! Not your ordinary menu!! Definition of service with a smile! Had such a great experience here. The atmosphere was up beat, attitudes were genuine and service was the best Ive had in a while!! To top it off, the desserts are amazing!!
We dined here for the first time this afternoon. Everything was amazing. I had the pho, my husband had the brunch blt. Our kids had the grilled cheese and chicken tenders. The fries are crisp and seasoned nicely. I loved the environment, from the unique tables and beer bar to the pinball.Emily took great care of us, and fulfilled a special request for my kids. Well be back!
Korean wings are amazing! I enjoyed the outdoor seating, but was disappointed that all drinks were served in single use plastic cups - not very environmentally aware. I dont know if glassware is used inside. My friend and I also ordered the petite lobster roll which we both felt was over priced considering the lobster wasnt very fresh tasting and over cooked. Fries were ok but again, not great.
A group of 6 of us reserved a table on the outside patio to celebrate a friends birthday (they let us bring in a cake!!). The patio is set up on a closed portion of Griffith Street - it was very nice! They had some heaters set up and even though it was pretty windy we could still feel the heat. Most of us had beers, but I had the Nautical Mile and it was delicious. The food stole the show! We tried 3 of the 6 appetizers on offer: the Korean Fried Chicken, the Korean BBQ Cauliflower and the BBQ Carrots. They were all amazing - each one was so flavorful and the chicken was very tender. We ordered the BC Burger, the Cali Club (again - chicken was so tender) VBLT and the tacos on special. Everyone loved their entrees. One of the owners checked in with us a couple of times, moved some heaters around for us and just made us feel so welcomed. We will definitely return! Thanks for a great night, Berkley Common!!
Wonderful cabana dinner outside! Service was great- attentive waiter and food was quick and delicious. Love the carefully orchestrated menu and use of seasonal veggies. You guys never disappoint! Grateful to have you as an option through this pandemic. Highly recommend!
The Berkley Common had some pretty big shoes to fill, and I feel as though it has done a fantastic job. The chips and cheese appetizer are a great way to start your meal. The steamed buns arent your standard bar fare but are delicious none the less. The chicken sandwich has performed what I though to be an impossible feat in that it stays crispy from start to finish. Plenty of beers are on tap, and the house cocktails are solid. If youre rolling through Berkley, its worth stopping for dinner.
Fantastic experience. We reserved an igloo online (very easy) and were checked in very quickly when we arrived. The outdoor Winter Wonderland with fire pits and picnic tables was really great! They have a nice selection of beers on draft and some really interesting cocktail choices. Our waiter, Colin, was informed and fun. The chicken sandwich was perfect but the pork shank stole the show! Wow was it good! Great place and HIGHLY recommended!!!
Visited Berkley Common for the first time since Covid (we frequented quite often before this all happened) and we were so impressed! The updated drinks and menu were amazing! We had the Korean Fried Chicken for an appetizer and tacos for dinner. Everything was delicious. I can’t imagine how tough it has been to come up with new ways to serve their customers during social distancing but they have done a fabulous job. The new outdoor seating area is awesome and we felt comfortable and safe. Everyone working was wearing masks and gloves and the service was excellent. We talked to the owner Terry for a bit and he was so nice. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy the patio again. We’ve always enjoyed this spot and they never disappoint with their new menu items and ideas. Would recommend a thousand times.
We visited Berkeley Common for the 30 birthday celebration of my oldest son. Upon arriving at the restaurant, the staff was very friendly and let us know their Covid protocols and reminded that we would have an hour and a half for dinner. We were then very quickly seated in our igloo. Our waitress was new to the job and amazing!! The wine and cocktails we ordered were all really good. The only downside to our dining experience were the chicken meals we ordered. The spare rib burger was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The brussel sprouts were amazing and would order them next time as an appetizer. The filet was also done to perfection. If you don’t order a meal that comes with fries, DEFINITELY order them as an appetizer! We won’t be ordering any chicken dishes again, but will be back!
I stopped in here on Thursday 01-09. It was my first time coming here. When I walked in, I was unsure what I was supposed to do at first but just went up to the bar. It pretty nice here. I love the decor of the place. It has a pinball machine and a jukebox.I ordered the Lamb Burger with French Fries and an ice tea. The burger was delicious. The service was excellent. I will be coming back soon.
If you eat meat then this spot is probably a great place to grab a bite. But as a vegetarian, I will not be going back. Yes they have food that can accommodate a vegetarian/vegan/gluten free diet but will it knock your socks off? No. From a cocktail perspective everything is very sweet or tasted like jungle juice you made in college. If that is what you are into then their happy hour is pretty great. The thing that brought this place to a 2 star review is the service. They pack this place so full and have very limited staffing so you don’t see your waiter/waitress for up to 30 minutes.I do not recommend this place if you are looking for an evening of good service, nice atmosphere, and good food and drinks. Also, I’ve entertained everything from dive bars and 5 star restaurants. This place isn’t it. Period. I don’t know what it is. Maybe the missing set from Gilmore Girls.
I loved Berkley Commons when it opened and visited regularly but in the last few months they changed their oil in the deep fryers to vegetable/soybean and now this restaurant is off our list. They were so great to people with dietary concerns (gluten, dairy and even soy to some extent) when they opened, but now, not so much. So sad. If you’re the type who can eat anything-it’s a great place.
Was looking forward to checking this place out for brunch. Unfortunately my food was horrible. My eggs were wet, toast was cold, and everything lacked any real flavor. I left hungry. The service was good but the food took a long time and they went busy.We parked behind the building there were several people smoking out back (before and after). Turns out our server was one of them. Maybe its me but I dont want to see my server smoking out back before they give me food.Disappointing.
The food is wonderful!!! It caters to all kinds of food choices including vegan, gluten free and vegetarian. The 2 young ladies who served my large party were exceptional. They knew to bring the kids food first! . Not the usual bar food as the choices take precedence over the booze.
My first time here at Berkley Common and I loved it! I loved the whole set up. The open window where you can feel the breeze and people watch to the decor. It was pretty steady. I had great service, but of course I sat at the bar. I had the Korean BBQ Cauliflower wings. What sorcery is responsible for these to feel like you’re eating wings?! Like the crunch?! Ok, I digress, I had the Brussels sprouts and they were good, but One Eyed Betty’s still hold the number one spot when it comes to Brussels sprouts! Don’t get me wrong, I will order them again just my opinion. Overall great service, good drinks and food!
We really wanted this place to be better than it was. Great bistro pub ambience, quirky recipes on the menu, and efficient, friendly staff could not make up for the anticlimactic food. We love brussel sprouts, but the blood orange reduction was overpowering. I love brisket, but the open face brisket sandwich came with chewy onion straws and flavorless brisket on, admittedly, delicious bread. My wife loves a good chicken sandwich, but the breading on this one was spicy without being flavorful, and didnt adhere to the chicken. The homemade chips were crispy, but also lacked flavor. My son did enjoy the lamb burger, which was a bright spot. Also on the upside, the beer menu was solid. I dont expect we will be back, but we wish we had reason to return.
Went there for a few brews and some playoff hockey last night. What a great decision we made to go there. Great food, great atmosphere and the servers were awesome and accomaditing. Plus they have Little Kings beer! One of my all time favorites thats really hard to find. I plan to be back and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a nice place to get out to.
The short story: We walked in this morning, the staff of 3 servers, 1 bartender, and 1 hostess were covering 4 tables, but we were left ungreeted for 10 entire minutes. We walked out. Completely unacceptable. We thought we were being pranked. The long story: Walked into this place this morning, first time we have ever been here. Looked really cool and we were happy to see they weren’t super packed. Food menu looked awesome and so did the drink list. As we sat down and figured out what we wanted, 4 different servers walked by us without a greeting, we figured it was because we were reading the menu. Then we put the menus down and proceeded to watch the same 4 servers convene by the drink station, looking out at the restaurant as if watching over everything. A couple of them delivered food or drinks, but not once did anyone make eye contact with us, or even stop by our table. It was laughable honestly, became a game for my husband and I to see when they would come on their own without us flagging them down. Needless to say after sitting, staring at these servers, waiting to be greeted, we left 10 minutes later.
Visited for the first time tonight. Good food, nice place. Just relaxed after a busy week. Had a couple of beers. Berkley had its art walk about on Friday. Well upon leaving we asked for the bill. Our waitress told us that the bill was paid with a THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. Well we were stunned. Gail started crying and I just didnt know what to say. Thank you of course. I had a Grunt Style T on but ,how did they know? Regardless there are people out there who care. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is my favorite restaurant in the metro Detroit area! The staff is so friendly and super accommodating. The owners are also very present. Every time Ive been in (upwards of 6 times), the owners have been there and greeted tables, making sure everything was okay. The menu has options for everyone - vegan, vegetarian, paleo and comfort-food lovers. My favorite items are the Korean BBQ cauliflower wings and the winter grain bowl. The Japanese steamed buns are also a must-try! Super tasty and different than anything else you can get in Berkley. The specials change nightly as well, so be sure to ask your server whats on special. Prices are very reasonable too. Fun for groups, dinners or late-night drinks.
UPDATE: Gave Berkeley Common one last shot and was amazed at the transformation. Customer service has never been a strong suit here, but seems to be, now. Food was very good, previously, but has gone up another notch or two. Hoping this level of service can be maintained. Had a really nice time, here, today.ORIGINAL REVIEW: Service has gone downhill substantially, since the place opened. While it is important to build a cohesive team, there is far too much socializing among the staff and far too little attention being paid to patrons.
Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Clean and beautiful restrooms. We went their with another couple. We all love to eat and try everything on the menu at ever new venue we try. We ordered one of everything on the menu except the salads. We loved the Brussel sprouts and the Pulled Pork Kimcha Fries are to die for. Everything else we had was just okay. The Japanese steamed bread was the problem as it did not help the food if anything it hurt it. The texture strange and the flavor was blend. I think if they lose that dreadful Japanese steamed bun they food would be better on it own.
Overall quite good. Accommodating of food allergies, good service, and good (if a bit liquor forward) cocktails. Food is also good but not great. Some of the choices seem forced and the flavors can get a bit muddled. I tried the pork belly sliders, cauliflower wings, vegan gnocchi, and bulgogi wraps. The pork belly in the sliders was the best of everything, flavorful and nice and crispy. The bulgogi wraps were over sauced with muddled flavors. The cauliflower wings were the best complete dish. The gnocchi itself was disappointingly firm and the sauce was floury but the vegetables in the dish were delicious.
Super cute place in downtown Berkely. Fits the city vibe and offers a variety of beers on tap. The service is great but the food was really lacking. It was cold when it came to our table and wasnt flavorful. I will try again in hopes the food improves. Otherwise, I will just have drinks.
Despite some minor kinks, this restaurant appears to have a genuine interest in satisfying their customers. When a restaurant or bar recently opens, I believe it is fair to expect some minor issues. We experienced a wobbly table (which couldnt be resolved by jamming a napkin under the leg), an incorrect order, and some cold street corn. I was also disappointed when I was told I couldnt get the Texas toast with my Fried Chicken Sandwich.Even though the aforementioned events occurred, all can be overlooked by the great service the wait staff provided, the inventive and tasty cocktail menu, and most importantly the sincere interest from the owners in improving our overall experience. We will definitely return and look forward to seeing an ever improving Berkley Common!
They have a new chef who is really bringing great changes. Food is coming out at appropriate times, plating had improved remarkably, they have daily specials, and gluten free and vegetarian/vegan options. This place is turning into a real gastro pub! They will also be starting brunch hopefully by late February or early March. New favorite Berkley spot.
Is it my first visit and I was wonderfully impressed with the vibe in the room. It was an eclectic mixture of young people with kids and young singles and older folks. Comfortable very comfortable. The food some unexpected and exquisite choices. Because I dont basically eat carbs it was a little hard for me at first however they commodated me by changing toppings on things I wanted the brussel sprouts without the honey glaze on them. Im certainly would have been fabulous cuz the brussel sprouts were fabulous anyway. A new fine for me close to where I work and I will definitely be back because I love the local vibe.
Awful service. The waitress had to be asked several times to get one refill. We had to keep asking every time there after. We even had to beg for silverware. The fried pickles literally tasted only of the oil it was fried in, and the dressing had zero flavor. Shoestring fries advertised on the menu, but theyre regular frozen box fries. The spare rib ravioli was the smallest serving Ive ever seen for an entree. For a hidden gem and amazing atmosphere and food this is by far one of the worst places Ive ever eaten.
Recently hosted an event in their amazingly awesome event space and couldnt be happier with the food and level of service provided! Their team went above and beyond to ensure that all of our guests needs were met and the owner made the planning process a breeze. Also - the food is soooo good!!! Would definitely host another event at Berkley Common!
As a vegan it is hard at times to find a place to eat out. Berkley common had some nice choices dispersed throughout the menu. I had the Korean bbq cauliflower, vegan mango spicy cauliflower tacos, and my wife the homemade black bean burger all excellent and I was able to snack on her sweet potatoe fries ...score! left satisfied and Seymour our waitstaff was a delight.
Food is edible, service is good. But DO NOT GO THERE ON WEEKENDS. The place gets so crowded and the management thinks they can handle the crowd on a friday night the same way they did on a tuesday night. Get more kitchen and wait staff. I waited for TWO HOURS for my food. Unfortunately the short staffed waitresses have to take the impact of the slow kitchen. (I did leave a 50% tip). The management should not hurt the service industry people, and hire more people to manage your crowd. Know your limits and business.
Id love to say I ate there but after 15 mins of waiting for a server to take our order, we finally left, no one even acknowledge our presence. They werent busy, had plenty of open seats and patrons seated on either side of us had drinks and food. What a waste of time going there, we hardly ever have the opportunity to go out with our kids and I was excited to finally try this place out.At least the manager I spoke to was very apologetic and offered to email me some incentives to which I declined.
Great place to go and socialize with friends . food is tasty, especially the veggie burger . this place puts a nice spin on their meals and thats the reason for the 5 stars . If you like expanding your palate and trying different flavors like their Korean Cauliflower Wings, I highly recommend this place ..
Ive tried this place a couple tries, and it just aight. They got gluten free and vegetarian stuff, but the food aint been that great. Appetizers is not cooked right or is cold and the pulled pork tacos were super bland. Its also overpriced. Dinner for me and my boo was a franklin. The last time I went, i sat at a community table in the back that wobbled like cray. Some tweenagers were sitting on the other side leaning on the table making that thang rock. They were also pootin, stankin up the place (I’m not going to let pootin tweens effect my review, but it was nast).I don’t want to hate on small independently owned restaurants or businesses, but I don’t really see myself coming here again.
Service was incredibly slow. I was served a salad with no dressing. When I asked for dressing the waiter said heres some extra!: Then he removed my $9 glass of wine before I was finished drinking it. The food is not good enough for such terrible service at this place. Might want to avoid.
Like its predassessor the Berkley Front, the Commons has a nice selection of beers on tap, and carafes of water on the table for us thirsty folk. Although the menu is on the smaller side, what is there is tasty and well prepared, good attention to details. We tried all of the following, all of which we would definitely order again : seared peppers appetizer, portabello sandwich also delicious a little spicy. The kale pear salad was great with pickled stuff and olives and cheese yum. Veggie buns yummy. Veggie spaghetti very fresh. The ice cream sandwich with Caulders ice cream and home made cookie completed a very fine meal. Service was attentive and friendly, table stayed clean, order was correct and food was prompt. Juke box was excellent.
Had hair in my food on two separate occasions. Only thing they did was not charge me for the dish with hair in it. Kitchen staff are too lax to health codes if this happened twice to me, disappointing because they have a good beer selection and I really wanted to like this place
Way over priced! Waitress was 5 stars when she served the Yukon chips with a fondue goat cheese with scallions and smoked bacon for eight dollars came out as eight potato chips with smeared goat cheese a few scallions and a pinch of crumbled bacon she saw my discuss and suggested their Black Angus meatballs with marinara sauce. So I did four meatballs in a red sauce for 9 dollars. The only meat the meatballs saw must have been passed over them for they had no flavor ,mushy weird texture and the sauce came straight out of a can.disappointed and will never eat their again.
The place had a nice menu. The food is very good.Unfortunatly, the owner had her children there and they are allowed to be very loud & run around. Totally unrelaxing & disturbing when you are trying to have conversation & a meal. I will try the place 1 more time, but will leave if there are kids running around again.
Returned to Berkley after moving away 5 years ago to find this establishment in the place where my beloved Berkley Front used to be. Cant fault them for trying to open up to a more diverse clientele though. It follows the template of a lot of new places like this -- while the food looked good (didnt eat) and the place seemed cozy, it lacked originality. My wife and I immediately noticed the logo on the building as the tired hip design shortcut 90% of new businesses adopt. Do the fine-stroke X thing and put things in the negative space! Bummed me out to see the beer selection whittled down and the diverse tap handles replaced with uniform wooden pegs. 3 stars for just... bumming me out.

2022-04-07Berkley Common is a great spot to grab a quick drink with friends or a bite to eat -- Id say its under-appreciated, and on some level I kind of want to keep it as a hidden gem in the area!Ive been to Berkeley Common a couple of times over the years and its always a chill spot to meet up and have a good conversation. Their cocktail lineup always has some interesting options, and I appreciate that they have some unique food options too! Ive tried a few different cocktails and havent gone wrong yet, Id definitely recommend trying out a few and seeing what piques your interest most. The food portions can be massive too, I got the sweet potato fries and the bowl was enough for a full dinner course in and of itself.Overall, if you live in Royal Oak/ Berkley and havent tried out Berkeley Common... I think you need to!

2022-06-01Had the veggie omelette and it was amazing. The biscuits are home made and wow is all I can say. I did get served cold coffee but the waiter did bring me another that was hot. Outdoor seating is nice. Over all a great experience

2022-06-09Came in to meet some friends, was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and liqueur selection. I have a feeling that they make some mean amaro cocktails. I was being thrifty and ordered a whiskey sour off the generous happy hour menu. It was a proper whiskey sour (with egg white), not made with a nasty premixed bottle. Im looking forward to going back when I can afford a few craft cocktails!

2022-03-20Got a couple cocktails,. Lots of ice and typical $12/drink. The kind of fine crush ice that fills your glass. First time visit and thought this would be a great local craft cocktail joint based on their branding. Pretty ho-hum and nothing special. Would return to try out food if I was walking by.

2022-04-17The duck fat hash and banh mi are both delicious, my brother in law said he also really enjoyed the chicken fried steak. The drinks are also excellent, overall great spot for brunch!

2021-06-30I had the VBLT and the Korean cauliflower BBQ wings. Both were pretty good but. The only thing was the fries were really salty and didnt go well with the VBLT. Next time I would go with a different side like sweet potato fries. Overall the place was nice and Id definitely eat here again.

2022-05-11Nice outdoor space and atmosphere and good service. Food is pretty good and they have a decent selection of beer. Prices are a bit high overall and for some items feel very high for what they are.

2019-08-03We had our wedding reception upstairs in the private party space. They have a private bar and bathrooms. Its a beautiful, spacious room. Katie (the owner) was so wonderful and accommodating to us throughout the entire process. She worked with us to design a special menu, which incorporated favorites from the restaurant with some items which would accommodate dinner for all of our guests. They also were very helpful in making the room look how we wanted. Everyone RAVED about the food. Way better than a traditional wedding hall. The bartender was wonderful the night of and Katie and her husband (who was on hand for our celebration) made sure we always had a drink in hand and were having a good time. 100% I recommend having a special event here.

2021-05-31We had wanted to try Berkley Common for some time and we are so glad we did! The food was great and our waitress was very helpful and friendly. We will definitely be back!
