My husband and I come here every year to celebrate our first date, which was at big Rock. We love celebrating there. The team there is so nice and treats everyone so wonderfully. We absolutely love Dorothy. Sheโs perfect in suggesting food we like, wines and other things that make our anniversary perfect. In the land of amazing restaurants! Big Rock surpasses all of them. The steak is sublime. This year we celebrated our anniversary and our closest friendโs birthday! Great great food, wine and dessert!!
Delicious food and excellent service with an old-school vibe (the good kind). Its pricey, but youre getting what you pay for. I recommend the calamari - theirs is my favorite Ive had anywhere. The filet is always perfectly cooked, and Ive never been disappointed in a meal here.
Loved this venue! A unique, cozy, elegant ambiance. Our server, Gabby, was amazing! So prompt, friendly, and informative with it being our first time dining. The wine was wonderful, steaks were very flavorful and tender. 10/10 recommend the Big Rock Chophouse for any and all dining occasions!
Nice iconic place with fresh well prepared dishes. Calamari is something that is worth going for. Salads are large and fresh. Drinks on another hand is something that need to be improved. There is no bar menu and we had to give a recipe of the drinks that we want to the waiter. Still came out very strong and not really enjoyable. Overall, the place is great. Will come back in the future
Used to really enjoy going here. Unfortunately, something has changed. A couple of us went there last week to just hang out at the bar and the two female bartenders were terrible. To sum it up, they are rude, obnoxious, and political. Keep politics out of your work and mind your own business. Noone asked for your opinion. One said she has worked there for 10 years. Thats a shame that management has allowed her behavior for so long. I feel badly for the other employees that work there that they have to deal with the bully bartenders. Food was meh!
The food is better than the decor. Everything was delicious here. Pretty straight forward steakhouse menu. Nothing wrong with that at all. Like I said everything was great. Staff was polite and friendly.Decor is odd. Part cabin, part lodge, part Vegas gone wrong. Honestly I couldnt stop looking at all the mash-up. Soooo.... entertaining I suppose! It just needs some interior Reno/updating to a cohesive theme. Fun time. Would go again np.
The patio was beautiful, Mark the waiter gave our table good service and the seafoodchowder was the highlight of the evening. The rest of the meal was atrocious. The short rib was dry, not tender and lacked sauce. I had to order a side of zip sauce to choke it down. The side of โshredded Brussels sprouts was pitiful, it belonged in the trash. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. The filet was flavorless and cooked poorly. The onion crisps on top were chewy and tasted like they were fried in old grease. Probably the second worst meal Ive had all year. Complete waste of $200.
Just a good as I remember. Havent visited since 2010, but remains in my top ten! The filet was perfectly cooked, medium rare, as I ordered. The zip sauce is the best. Service was incredible- thank you Gabriella. The patio is beautiful, what a great night out! Made me forget about the past few pandemic months. And shout out to the friendly gentleman in Valet!
I will start out with saying that I am related to the executive chef, however this does not affect my opinion on the quality of service and food. Totally worth the drive to Birmingham for me. The food here is incredible and the staff are friendly and professional. Prices, as expected, are high but who isnt willing to put a little bit of cash out for a nice night out. Dont be afraid to ask for a wine that is not on the menu, you never know, they might have something
This was my first but certainly not my last visit to this restaurant. I enjoyed everything about this place. Very pleasant and polite staff. The food was delicious. And I mean my whole party ordered different items and everything was good. And to top off a very fulfilling meal, I didnt have to wait very long for the valet to bring me my car. So needless to say that Ill be returning.
Big Rock Chophouse was a dining experience! This hidden gem is a best kept secret!! Ive NEVER been before & we were pleasantly surprised. ๐ The service is top notch. The food was exceptional ๐ & the service was second to None! That bread melted in my mouth like butter. ๐ Jackie was PHENOMENAL ๐ I cant wait to come back again would love to tour the facility looks huge. We ate at the bar ๐ธ but I plan to have a Reservation next time to enjoy the full dining experience. It was nice & clean & the valet parking is a nice classy touch. Thanks again for a Beautiful ๐ Evening!!!!!!
Fine dining in a great atmosphere.Big Rock works with you to get great food without being buried on price. Sides are good for sharing with 2,3 or 4. Generous portions.I enjoyed steak & a bottle of wine.Could not finish either. Had the soup & split a salad. Could not order dessert.Recommend heartily.Get back out & enjoy.
I cant say how amazing this food was. I had a steak and mushrooms and brussel sprouts. All of which were amazing. They have a zip sauce their own house sauce to go on the steaks. It is so good. You have got to try it if you havent. Amazing food. A little on the pricey side. But if the food is so good that youre still thinking about it hours later its worth it.
EXCELLENT food, wine, dining experience. We were not prepared for this experience but they treated us like we were first class. We plan to travel the 3 hours again just to dine here again. No we didnt do that the first time, we were local for volleyball and dressed comfortably and this was a fine dress place with valet parking but again I say they paid no attention to how we were dressed and treated us like royalty. AWESOME food experience, best glass of wine I had ever tasted (sorry I cant recall the name๐ก) and our waiter was friendly and attentive. The chef came out and greeted us personally too.If you are thinking of dining here DO IT!!!
Great food, great ambiance. Its a nice restaurant, possibly fancy? Maybe the closest you can get to fancy without being fancy. Its classy. Definitely a great place for a date. My brother is an unofficial gourmand and chooses this place everytime after a special occasion. Its a tad bit expensive, hence the 4 stars, but its good enough to be. The -1 star is also for the tiny parking lot. They pretty much force you to use the valet.
We ordered steak, Brussels sprouts, calamari, and French onion soup for take out and it was all terrible. The calamari and Brussels sprouts were soggy and didnโt taste good. Half the steak was leather and the other half was still mooing. The soup was sour tasting and not edible. We understand that take out can be difficult but this meal was beyond terrible.
Fabulous atmosphere. Went here with friends for a nice dinner. Food was fantastic, but I must say, the service was average. My expectation was higher than what was provided. I ordered a bottle of wine, server came back to table twice and forgot to pour me a glass. I had to pour myself after watching him serve my friend her glass and the other two guests their beers.. I waited patiently twice for him to come back, and he still did not pour. Silverware was also forgotten after being asked 3 times!! Linens were sub par--the white napkins left us covered in tiny white lint balls--we were provided black napkins after this. The food definitely made up for the lack-luster service....next time we are in Birmingham, we will go to a different establishment!
We love BR. We have been here dozens of times through the years. We love the food, ambiance, non-stuffy atmosphere and especially the charcuterie board and desserts. After going last night, however, we probably wonโt be back for a while. The covid scene here is scary. Even being fully vaccinated, we didnโt feel comfortable. We also had one of our you do kids with us who isnโt old enough to be vaccinated. The staff do not wear masks, including the servers. Our booth was back-to-back with another booth, without plexiglass. Our server was unmasked and ungloved, even when her hands were practically touching each item on the charcuterie board as she explained it. When our food came, it was set on trays right next to another table. When other peopleโs food came, it was set on the ledge right behind us. If anyone was sick, I donโt see how it wouldnโt spread. Masks and distancing indoors may not be required by law, but they go a long way to make people feel comfortable while dining indoors.
We have been coming to Big Rock Chophouse for nearly 4 years and every time we come back we are reminded of WHY we come back. From the wait staff to the valet guys to the servers, everyone we have had the pleasure of interacting with is always professional and friendly. The food is consistently of an excellent quality and expertly prepared; you can tell it is made with great pride.Whether it is for a special occasion or just a nice dinner out, Big Rock Chophouse will not disappoint. We are already looking forward to our next visit!
It was a nice atmosphere and service was good too. The food was blah. I donโt think Iโd be back for the food. The steak was okay. Iโve had much better steaks for cheaper. I have friends who eat halal and there wasnโt much to offer them in terms of seafood or veg options. My friend got the ahi tuna and she did not like it at all. I think our favorite thing we had were the fries. The fries were really good but thatโs about it. No other honorable standouts.
My Wifes Steak was great!! Grilled to perfection. Potatoes were creamy tasting like grandmas & mushrooms were flavorful. My sea-bass was dry & Brussel Sprouts was even dryer. I told my waiter and he Shrugged it off like Larry David. Maybe because it was a Tuesday night & we are still in The Co-vid era, and thats why top tier establishment are not at their best. It was date night and my wife was happy with her meal, so happy life happy wife..๐.
We had the most awesome meal! 4 of us met there. Had a reservation, seated immediately in the patio (covered patio) Jaime (hope I spelled her name right) was the most attentive server! Steak Bites melt in your mouth! Cant say enough how much we enjoyed everything! We will be back! The salmon and short ribs were also delicious!
It was OK. There was nothing stellar about the food or service that made us think Weve got to come back here soon. Service was fair. Not incredibly attentive, but it was busy and perhaps the wait staff was on an off night. For the price paid for steak, sides, drinks and wine for two, I think there are better options nearby.
Big Rock Chophouse never disappoints! And, last night was no exception. My wife and I were lucky enough to have our wedding reception there 20 years ago. Vera, the ROCK of Big Rock was available to provide a food tasting for my mom, wife, and I, and we were hooked. My mom had been going for years, and made the suggestion of our reception to be held there. The experience was awesome then, and was awesome last night, 20 years later. We make it a point to come every year on or near our anniversary. And who is usually there to greet us? Vera! Vera and her team made us and our guests feel like celebrities. Derrick and Dorothy were amazing! The drinks and food were incredible as always. It was the perfect setting for me to ask my wife to marry me again. She said yes!! And to top it off, for dessert the Big Rock team provided Banana Foster. Which is not on their menu, but made it for us, as they did on our reception day. Thanks for 20 years of EXCELLENCE, Team Big Rock. We will definitely see you all next year! Hugs Vera!!Bill and Rebecca Reed
WE LOVE THIS PLACE! Food is always tasty! Everything we order is amazing . Their salmon , Caesar salad, French onion soup and their lamb chops are great. Dorthy has been our waitress each time and sheโs truly the best. Always making sure our food is just the way we like it.
My husband and I had reservations for Sweetest Day and was looking forward to it as this was our first time there. We were escorted to their lower dining area which felt appropriate for an intimate party gathering. Once we got there we instantly noticed there were only African American patrons in this area. It did not set well with me, nor the other patrons as I light heartedly mentioned the observation as I sat down. After about 20mins being there, another black couple was escorted down, I knew at this point I was not going to spend my money at an establishment that was obviously tolerating their black patrons. I expressed my concerns to the white manager who couldnโt give a clear explanation of the situation. I will NOT be back and as I exited the restaurant, there was PLENTY of room to have had sat the 4 black couples in the basement and still maintained social distancing.
Definitely not a place to come back. You can absolutely find a better steak for the same or lower price. The steak that we ordered was the fillet. We asked for medium well cooked. What we got was totally burned and very dry. They also forgot some of our side orders. Moreover, for a group of 6 they donโt bring separate checks and just divide the bill equally which is not fair since the cost of menu items are very different.
Family Dinner: We had a party of 10 people seated in the train car? area. Everyone was seated comfortably. Appetizers were each enough for four people. Calamari was cooked perfectly. Entrees arrived promptly, serving sizes were more than enough. The food was excellent, everyone enjoyed their meals. One dessert was enough for four or more people and again they tasted exquisite.
Amazing as always. Service is top notch and food is always above and beyond what you expect.Wine list from around the world. They stuff their own olives for their martinis.Salads are large and fresh.Steaks melt in your mouth and are cooked to perfection.Sides are large and easy to shareDessert menu is large and has something for everyone.Full bar and great social scene. Inside and patio searing. Great for groups or a date night.Reservations recommended.
Awful experience. From the moment we sat down we were not taken care of by our waiter. He was rushing us to order our drinks and appetizers. Then it took him forever to come back and take our order. We sat there for 1 hour before our food came out. I ordered the tuna which tasted great - but my meal was cold. The others at the table ordered scallops and short ribs - both came out great. The other person at the table ordered a NY strip (cooked medium). His food came out really cold and the meat was severly over cooked. So, after having it sent back his new piece of meat came out - warm, with NO flavor and once again, overcooked. No manager came out to speak with us. Instead we were offered one free dessert and bid goodnight. We did sit outside and the atmosphere was nice, however the musty/mildew smell in the bar area on the walk to the restroom was disgusting. There are far too many places that have much better service, better food and just as nice atmosphere. For four people to sit down to a dinner that costs over $300 (only $30 was spent on booze) you would think that everything would be stellar. Our experience was far from okay.
I come here at least 3 times a month. If you come to the bar just for happy hour, the prices are amazing for the food and drinks. The bartenders will remember you down to your drink order and are always attentive. I was especially impressed when the bartenders upstairs remembered both my drink and cigar a month and a half later. These are great people and I highly recommend this place
Amazing service, wonderful tasting food, large selection of sweet and smooth tasting cigars. Ive been here many times and have never had a bad experience. Other customers can be a little unfriendly but the staff is superb. One of my all-time favorite places to go for a good meal, a nice cigar, or a drink.
What a fabulous meal we shared for my daughterโs 21st birthday! The atmosphere was warm and festive with the addition of holiday lights, and the service was top notch. The staff went out of their way to make my daughter feel special. Our food - shrimp small plate, branzino and a filet, was excellent, and the cake with fresh berry compote was delicious. We also appreciate that Big Rock is one of the few local restaurants where they use tablecloths, the seating is plush and comfortable, and one can actually hear across the table - bravo!
The on ambiance is nice the wait staff is always on point and theres a really nice cigar bar upstairs. The humidors a bit small but is still a nice space they also have cigar locker rentals for Those who want to purchase a membership. They also have really nice spaces for events.
Great happy hour in spite of it not being terribly long. $5 appetizers (most are amazing) If you get the sliders make sure you get the zip sauce with them. The calamari is incredible.Only downside is parking sucks and you have to either valet ($7) or walk.Ali the bartender is great too, always nice and very entertaining.
Love this place! Went for an office holiday party recently. Had the salmon and filet with potatoes and green beans. Delicious! The filet was well-seasoned, the zip sauce was amazing. The salmon was cooked to perfection and almost melted in my mouth! Green beans fresh and crisp. Potatoes creamy and soo good! The staff were all knowledgeable and so friendly, and really helped make it a great night. The cigar bar upstairs is a warm and inviting space, with lots of comfortable seating all along the walls and a bar!
If youโve got the wallet for Big Rock, you have to go. The folks here are able to pair high-level dining with a casual, comfortable, friendly atmosphere, and they do so to perfection. The appetizers are delicious and sized appropriately. the wine list is world-class. The service is just right - attentive but not hovering, always aware of our needs, at times before we even knew ourselves. Entrees were generously sized, beautifully prepared and presented, and absolutely delicious. Make sure you ask to have Mitchell as your server if youโre there at dinner time. You are in for a remarkable evening.
My wife and I took my mother here last night for her birthday, and everything was perfect. First time any of us had been, and we couldnt have been more impressed with the service, and the food. Definitely a cool building and setting as well. The mac and cheese and gnocchi were quite good as appetizers, and the Imperial Wagyu and Ribeye were cooked perfectly. Our server Lindsey was amazing, and made it a great experience for all of us. Will definitely be returning, and would recommend to anyone thinking of making a trip.
Had my Wedding Rehearsal Dinner in the Cellar Room. Felt Like a King! Amazing Service and food. Returned Today for our 1yr anniversary dinner , and again , Phenomenal Service (Phillip was His name) , outstanding food (I had the duck ,the wife had the Chicken entree) . Black Label Drink Was made Perfect ! They were out of Calamari , bummer, bc its top shelf . Steak Bits appetizer was Cooked rare, again , very good.I have bad luck with most restaurants, and Big Rock has yet to let me down.Total for 1 top shelf Mixed drink , 2 entrees , 1 appetizer , and a shared piece of Erics Birthday Cake was only $105 (plus tip).Thats a great price in my opinion , especially for Birmingham!
Expensive steak house prices without the expensive steak house quality. We ordered the calamari to start, it was flacid and undercooked. The $40 NY strip I ordered was chewy and the seasoning was to be desired. The $10 baked potato was quite a sad thing with cheese and bacon thrown sparingly on top of it. The shredded brussel sprouts were extremely bland. The $14 apple cobbler was a microwaved tray of processed apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream thrown on top. None of the food was good. The best and only good thing about my meal was my glass of wine. This place would be mediocre even if it was priced accordingly. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else if you are thinking about dropping some money on a nice meal.
So, I dont know how to feel about this place. You ever like your server, but done care for the service? Sorta-something like that was my experience this evening. Wife loved her food (Ribeye Spiralis, with potato puree and roasted tomatoes), me however, not so much. I order the imperial waygu ribeye, and small plate Mac & Cheese, with lobster and shrimp in it. The Mac was delicious, but the steak left something to be desired. It wasnt as tender as I was expecting and it seems like the focused more on the grill marks than the actual steak; temperature was off by at least 15 degrees south, and the char itself almost made the steak inedible. And I hate to be that guy, but when you pay $74 for the steak, you hope that its at least decent. Anyways, the zip sauce that came with it was to die for and as I said before, the service was excellent; Dorthory was spot on. Everyone else was kind as well, but today, the kitchen did not deliver.
This Chophouse Rocks! Went here for a womens luncheon. The staff was so courteous, professional and attentive. The food we were served light and delicious. The staff actually ask if anyone had any food allergies before serving! This showed me that this restaurant/owner cares about their diners well being. There is valet service!Well done Big Rock Chophouse!
The food was very good, but not consistent. I usually dont use butter with my bread, but that butter was to die for. I could have made a diet out of the bread and butter. The crackers and the bread in the basket were delicious. Most salads had croutons some did not. We all ordered salmon some had sauce some did not some had an abundance of sauce. My salmon was a little under cooked. The house wine was adequate. The atmosphere was so romantic we had to use our phones to read the menu. The deserts were delicious, I was disappointed in the fruit swirl with the cheesecake. I enjoy the crackle sugar top.
Excellent food and decor, but the staff was a little pretentious. They warm up, but it was a tense first impression. Wear business casual...if you dont use valet or show up in a luxury vehicle, you might get the cold shoulder to start with. The wife and I walked in - and I have a big beard - so they might have thought I was a lumberjack. $200 including 1 drink and tip for a couples dinner
Went to Big Rock for a business meeting and was not disappointed. From the calimari to the filet mignon, all of the dishes were well cooked and neatly prepared. We had the event in the front room which had intimate lighting as well as room for a projector screen. The staff was quickly rounding to refill drinks and ammenible to suggestions. Although expensive I would say its well worth the price. Definitely a cool place to check out between the food and atmosphere.
Saturday night we came here to celebrate our two year anniversary, and boy, are we ever glad we did!!! Five-star food, ambiance, and service all the way! Our server, Aaron, was wonderful! He was thoroughly knowledgeable about which options were gluten free and took it very seriously while still providing friendly and efficient hospitality. Our booth was very romantic and comfortable. It was one of the most enjoyable dinners out we have ever had. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the red wine sauce was delectable. We also especially loved the charcuterie board. Compliments to the chef!
I went years ago for my cousins 30th birthday. we rented a limo and decided to have dinner here as she worked in the area and wanted to check this place out. it was only a party of 4. but they seated us in the lower level/ basement even though there was ample seating In the main dining area. we didnt understand that but we took it as blatant discrimination because we were an all black female party. none of us have ever returned to this establishment and now Google recommends this restaurant to me. I really dont think Ill go back, there are so many nice restaurants just up the road in Troy. they have never treated me the way we were treated that Oct night at big chop.
We came here for my boyfriendโs birthday. I came here before to make sure it was what I was looking for and the host and wait staff gave me a tour, helped me pick what kind of birthday cake I wanted, and made reservations. It was so easy and we had an amazing evening. Highly recommend!
Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly. It was seasoned so well it didnt need the zip sauce, though that sauce was really good. The wild mushrooms were also seasoned perfectly. Next time I wont get the parmesan on the asparagus as it sort of congealed to it vs a sprinkle.
Excellent. We had the pleasure of attending a birthday party in the Cigar Lounge on the second floor. The hors doeuvres were great the people running the party did a fantastic job. I really would like to thank the barmaid who made the effort going downstairs and bring me a pot of coffee.
Every year, my wife and I come to this restaurant for our anniversary because they have always accommodated her gluten allergy. Her favorite thing has always been their truffle fries, and they have always said that they fry them separately to avoid cross contamination. Well, we just walked out without ordering this year, because the waiter told us the chef cant do that, and acted clueless on how its even possible. Then, we talked to the manager, who did little to make the situation better. We felt that both the manager and waiter spoke to us like we were children. They just lost a customer for life. They either lied to us in the past, or are just not accommodating anymore.
This site is my preferable site. Of all restaurants I know I love it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to this restaurant. Whenever I want to go to a proper meal, this place comes right away to my head. exeptionalgorgeous and all kinds of food and a rich menu.courteous team, and nice spirit. And very important, the tariff is decent. I recommend this spot with no doubt.
We made a bridal shower at Big Rock in the Stone Terrace room. Working with their staff was such a pleasure! Everyone there bent over backwards for us and it was the most perfect bridal shower! We would totally recommend Big Rock Chop House for any occasion! The Stone Terrace is gorgeous. The food was so delicious from the champagne punch, appetizers and salad with chicken or salmon. Dessert was elegant, also! What a great day! Thank you Whitney and the staff!
This was our first time here and Dorothy was totally on top of her service. she even had the chef make us a dipping sauce that we requested that we didnt realize wasnt part of the menu. she was even thinking about saving us money when the food we ordered was part of a special that they offered. needless the say the service was amazing and the food was even better!
Went with parents and gf as a celebration for our acceptance into grad school. All courses were excellent, and they had some very good beer available. Unfortunately they were in the process of relocating their formerly in-house brewery, so there were only a handful of beers to choose from. The New York strip that I had was one of the best I have ever enjoyed, and their steak sauce was excellent. The buffalo strip my girlfriend had was a little dry, but still very good. My dad got, I believe, a ribeye and enjoyed it. My mom got shrimp and a filet which was delicious. The sides and appetizers were also up to par. It is expensive, expect to pay about $100-$120 a person (after tips, with a couple drinks) for a full-course meal, but the service was fantastic and it was a very enjoyable experience. We were somewhat confused as to why we could only make reservations for 3:45 despite the place only being half full when we left (around 5:45), but that is neither here nor there.
My second time here was no as good as the first. It started when my wife and I walked in and said to the hostess two for Ron bcs our reservation was under the name Ron. The hostess said what? I said again, two for Ron. She again said, what? I said, what dont you understand? Then my wife said we have a reservation for 2, under the name Ron. She then said, oh, I thought you wanted a server named Ron and we dont have anyone named Ron.I ordered an 8oz. boneless ribeye, medium and it was tough and dry. The sweet potato fries were great, and the chop salad was very good. Our server was fine but for $180 I expected a much better experience.
Beware! Wife and I went for a drink on Monday October 7th. It was roughly 45 minutes before closing and there was only one waitress and a female bar tender. We had two drinks. Everything seemed ok, but about an hour after getting home, we both got violently Ill and it lasted for about 24 hours. Not sure if our drinks were spiked with something but this is a huge red flag. Could have been poisoned for all we know. Cant even get a manager to call me back. Something bad is happening with Big Rock. Lots of health violations recently as well.
Most importantly is the food. tremendous. Dorothy our waitress was very knowledgeable of the food. described in detail what to expect. if ur not familiar with high end meats ( like myself, she made it simple ). expensive , but fair for the delicious food. you will taste the smallest details. the creamy house sauce, the complimentary bread is amazing. we orders calimaei for our appetizer. very very good. pork chops and steaks. top notch food. not a place I can afford wakly, but perfect for special occasion. . thankyou Dorothy for all your recommendations
Best steak i ever had (Rib eye) Truffle fries were superb with the zip sauce. 2002 merlot was pretty good even though wine isnt my thing. Definitly a high end restaurant. Total for 4 people was about $300, 500 including the 2 wine bottles. Great staff, knowledgable about the wine and dish with good recommendations. Valet parking if you want it, out side had large ac fans and free desert for ny Grandmothers 76th birthday. Asparagus and bellsprout sides were also pretty good but i never had them before.
Owned by a hardworking family that taught me that the American dream is still alive. One of the finest steaks that money can buy. Try the seafood macaroni it is good enough to write home to mom about. Emily is the best they have to offer so be sure to ask for her to supervise your next visit.
Had dinner with three other couples tonight. Ordered the chicken entree. Best I can say: It taste like chicken! A quarter with a leg and a thigh, some green beans and two thirds of the plate filled with mashed potatoes to make it appear that you were being fed well. Food was served cold, dry and bland. Left most of it to be mercifully taken away and sent down a garbage disposal. At $26.00 a complete rip! Had better chicken dinners at Boston Market for less than half the price.Over-priced and unimpressive fare in Birmingham. Save your time and your money.John M.Peters (Rochester Hills)
Food was absolutely 5 stars. Definitely worth it in my opinion. And I certainly dont always feel that way after leaving some of these expensive steak joints (looking at you Eddie Merlots). BUT, the decor of this place is sooooo weird. They were playing Justin Bieber at some points. And they have colorful lights everywhere like its a club. Mirrored walls, animal heads everywhere. Very weird, but good food ๐
It was our anniversary yesterday, and my husband and I decided to celebrate it at Big Rock Chophouse. We had two small plates the gnocchi and the Mediterranean shrimp (we devoured them in no time, it didnt even occur to me to take a picture first.) Both were phenomenal, especially the gnocchi! One of the best Ive ever had!We shared the duck and the wagyu beef as main entrรฉes. I personally liked the duck - my husband was not a fan! I guess duck isnt for everyone. He was really taken aback that it was pink in the middle (I didnt mind it) The wagyu was impeccably done! What was really sweet is that we received complementary dessert! The key lime pie was to die for!Dorothy took extra good care of us, and gave us spot on recommendations! My only criticism is the decor... Stripped back it would look much better (do you really need fake rocks and a flying bison?)Overall it was a lovely evening, would definitely come again!
The atmosphere is probably the best part of Big Rock Chophouse; from the historic train station aspect, to the intimate outdoor patio, or the private tunnel dinning room, it is truly an experience. You can even slip upstairs for some dancing and a cigar. The food is good, but not quite good enough to justify the high prices for which they are well known. The wine markup seems to be higher than normal, too.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff. Oysters Rockefeller? Just plain awful at $19/half dozen. Shrimp cocktail, the shrimp were VERY tough and rubbery. The drinks were horribly watered down, and while top shelf was ordered by name, was not top shelf liquor. The wine was good. The gazpacho was excellent. Dover Sole? The chef made a big deal about bringing it out and stating how they will take a moment to de bone it. 5 in our party ordered the sole, one was good, one was cold, one was tasteless and 2 were full of bones. The manager came to the table and explained that Chef usually debones the sole but when there are so many ordered at one time, they cant be held up doing them all What? Make some time, cripes! Charred Carrots side dish? Awful. Brussels Sprouts looked as if they had been run through a blender. No one at our table had ever seen them served like that, EVER. Also very tasteless. The filets and the NY Strips were excellent. Yes, I realize this is a ChopHouse but for the love of God if you are going to serve fish or seafood learn how to prepare it properly, otherwise leave it off the menu. For a roughly $780 meal, not including gratuity, we were all extremely disappointed. Will NOT be returning. Had been recommended by someone who had enjoyed Dover Sole there some years back.
The decor and ambiance screams old english tavern. Its like walking into your favorite family pub. We had the filet mignon with cognac mushroom sauce and the salmon with beurre blanc. Both were done to perfection. The steak came with cheddar mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salmon came with roasted redskin potatoes and cherry tomatoes and capers. Would definitely return.
Institutional food better describes the quality of the plates. The kitchen cannot cook a filet, it came out burned, the outside layer was charcoal. An establishment that cannot cook a stake should not even sale it, never mind the high price tag and the blunt mushy sides and shared fries baskets. There seems to be a problem with cleanliness and sanitation since inside, the place smells like unwashed peed on carpets, never mind the bathrooms that smell like third world garden prota-potties/old pee.Best advice I ever got from people working in restoration is to not eat in places where toilets smell like that, since same rules apply in their kitchens: management/owner do not enforce following sanitary requirements.
Im from Chicago, a business Executive and haved travelled the country extensively. I commend the most discriminating steak lover to find in Big Rock a top tier chophouse rivaling anything out there in terms of quality ribeye. Dont forget the cigar lounge upstairs to top off a great dinner. Cheers.

2021-03-29Love Big ๐ชจRock. Outstanding service and food. We sit at the bar sometimes and just stop in for a drinks ๐ธappetizer or a Dessert. The menu is also great and they have the best steaks in town.

2021-12-13If you havent been here, you are running out of time! Sadly, it will be closing on 12/30/21. The food here is awesome and so is the service. Its a great place for a dinner outing where you know you will enjoy your food. You wont find a better prepared steak! The ambience is also great. If you are into cigar bars, there us one upstairs with all the ambience and atmosphere you could ever want. Drinks are superb and there is a walk-in humidor where you can select cigars for purchase.

2021-10-19Had a great dinner with my family for my Fathers Birthday. Me and my dad got the wagyu steak dinner. Holy cow, no pun intended, was it delicious. Thr lobster Mac a asparagus were perfect compliments. Such a bummer this place will be closing soon.

2018-01-09I expected more, it was ok. We had plans for a double date that went well, we were pretty cramped in our booth by the kitchen. Our waitress seemed like our questions were not understandable. The food was good. Would I ever return, maybe, maybe not, not too impressed. Tho our bill was, we had no leftovers.

2019-01-27So, I went because I know someone that works there and decided I wanted to take the wife and daughter along with sister in law for a decent meal. I really wanted a tomahawk and didnโt see it on the lunch menu so I asked for the steak menu which it wasnโt on there either, finally i just asked the server if she had tomahawks to which she said yes we usually run specials but we can do one...., look, Iโm all for an $80-90 steak with a la carte, but I got my bill and it was $125.... should have been the best thing Iโve ever had but it was just ok- sticker shock had me like whoa !

2018-02-02Solid steakhouse in a cool venue. Pricey.Food was quite good. Went during restaurant week and had a 3 course meal for $30. Appetizers were good. Main course, a petite filet, was solid. Dessert was the best part: cake made up of chocolate brownie and hazelnut mouse. Decent selection of overpriced craft beer - $10 for 10oz of Founders Breakfast Stout? Give me a break - I paid that for the same pour of CBS recently.Location is a former train station, and its cool. The upstairs bar and cigar room is pretty swanky.Overall, the food was good for the discounted price but I wouldnt pay full price for it. The beer is definitely overpriced.
