We arrived on a Tuesday night at 8:15pm, and they were slammed (w/ a help wanted sign in the window). The staff was incredibly friendly and upfront from the start, and the food was soooooo worth the wait. Sierra was calm as a cucumber and meet our every need. We were impressed and enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend the thimbleberry marg and the chile rellanos.
Good food. Seating is outside so call to make a reservation ahead of time. Yes the thimbleberry drinks are amazing and I hope they keep them all on the menu. I had the chimichanga and am used to cheese sauced poured on top. They have like a green sauce that goes over and it mixes with the cheese inside. Very tasty.
Disgusting. Utterly disappointed.I went with my family and I ordered Chile rellenos. It was over cooked and did not taste even the slightest like Mexican food. The cheese used for it was not right and it was overall cooked. The corn bread was burnt. I was really disappointed and do not recommend this place although the employees were nice and service was great the food is terrible.
Atmosphere was great and drinks were spot on!! Food was hit or miss with a chimichanga that was super salty and refried beans that were undercooked and cold. Fajitas had super overcooked shrimp and greasy green peppers. Verde maybe had cornstarch in it which is odd. Enchiladas and rice were pretty good but overall it was kind of rough for being the only people there. Wanted to like it more because the owners and drinks were lovely
No mas fina!My friends enjoyed their Thimbleberry margaritas and the outdoor, COVID safe dining option. Our server was polite and friendly. Sadly, on a Tuesday evening in August, the rest of the experience was simply bad.Tables seated after us were served and left while our party of four waited over an hour for our food. Which was cold. Two of us did not get what we ordered. When I complained to the manager, he was anything but sympathetic. This restaurant used to be pretty good, but no more. They have lost my business. Adios!
My family comes to Calumet every year and we stopped here tonight and it will be the one and only time we ever come here. Sat here for over an hour for our food. The food was not even edible. Hands down the most disgusting Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. The waitress was rude, never asked if our bill should be split up, or what was wrong with the food.
After waiting over an hour everyones food came out wrong. Ordered a chicken enchilada, for some reason it tasted like ground hamburger... 🤦♂️ Waitress threw a fit over us not eating. Enchilada sauce tasted like Wendys chili. Table of two behind us was not happy with their meals either.. Will not return or recommend to anyone.
I ordered out from this restaurant yesterday and specifically asked about vegan options and was told the veggie burrito could be made vegan without cheese. When I got the burrito home I noticed it came with beans and rice (which tend to have animal fat or meat broth) so I didn’t eat them and called back today to ask before eating my leftovers. I was informed that the rice has chicken broth and the beans have lard. I recommended they make that clear on the menu and for when people call, and the woman was incredibly rude on the phone when I shared this information. She said they don’t advertise it as vegetarian or vegan and that she had another order to tend to. I called back wanting to know if the rice within the burrito was the same rice on the side that has chicken broth, again she rushed me off the phone saying “I just talked to you!! I have an order to take out. We don’t cater to vegetarian or vegan.” I enjoyed the burrito and just wanted to finish my leftovers in the hopes that at least the burrito contents were vegan. Thankfully I didn’t get sick, but someone else could!Giving two stars because my non vegan family enjoyed their food, and honestly I wouldn’t have left a bad review if the customer service would have been more apologetic and listened to my feedback instead of being incredibly rude. Those that take orders over the phone should know the ingredients of the food and not say something is vegan or vegetarian if it’s not / they don’t know. And for the rude employee, she could have simply apologized and if she was busy told me when a better time would have been to call back to speak to someone about my experience & feedback.
Was interested because of the aged steak. It was incredibly dry and lacked flavor (ordered it med rare). Sides were equally bad, so was the food my girlfriend got. Didn’t have high expectations but I was still very disappointed. Given the price I would’ve expected at least decent food - it was terrible.
Fabulous food, great atmosphere, and excellent service. Carmelitas has everything I expected of a great Mexican restaurant and a big step beyond. This isnt just good Mexican, but good food period. I had the stuffed Anaheim pepper, not on many menus. Its a memorable dish. The same expertise went into the sides-the best mixed grilled vegetables Ive ever had and corn bread to die for. Everything was served hot at the right time. The wait staff was friendly and went the extra mile. I even liked the decor (tons of Mexican art and pottery all shiny clean). Thanks Carmelitas for a wonderful dining experience! I will definitely return on my next visit to the Calumet area.
Stopped in for dinner on a Friday. Small joint in a small town, so I didn’t expect much; I was still a bit disappointed though. There was a charge for the chips and salsa , but I get it, there probably isn’t enough traffic to give anything away, but about 20% of the chips were stale; it was like they mixed an old bag with a new.A local said they had good steaks, so I ordered the porterhouse medium rare. It was cooked properly, but it was the toughest, most bland, dry-aged porterhouse I’ve ever had, and I’ve had them coast to coast. My wife’s NY strip was way under done, and after it was returned at the proper temp we found that it actually had some flavor: go with the cheaper steak if you sit down here. The burrito and burger my kids had were simply meh, actually what I expected. The fries were pretty good.Service was fine, but only 2 other tables were occupied the whole time we were there.
At Carmelitas right now before 4pm seating is all outside. We werent asked how the food was or if we would like our drinks refilled.including water. We have eaten here before and live locally. But this time we were disappointed it seemed like we were putting them out of their way today. The food seemed different from what we had before also. We also werent aware that there was a food price increase of 2%. We were told its posted on Facebook which we werent looking at before going there. And its down on their menu but because we already knew what we like to eat there we werent scouring the menu. it was just tacked onto our bill.
A friendly small town Tex-Mex restaurant in the most northern reaches of Michigan. Combines southern food with Midwest hospitality in an historic building with loads of unique cocktail items based on the local thimbleberry. Dont miss a chance to try this place on your visit to Calumet.
I wont be going back. I have been to Carmelitas a half dozen times or so. The food is good, not too spicy. Only had one side of potatoes that were too salty. Otherwise the food is good. However, its let down by the front of house. The wait staff needs to improve tremendously. During my last visit, the waitress brought our plates, and then ignored us. Nobody asked if the food was okay, if we needed anything, if we wanted desert (which I did), nothing. There were only 4 other customers in the dining room. I sat for 20 minutes after finishing my meal with no service. I left some cash on the table and left. Ive never been treated so poorly at a restaurant.
Got into Calumet late and the front desk at the hotel suggested Carmelitas for a late dinner, the food was great lots of spices giving it flavor but not burning your mouth. Service was very good. And if you like sweeter drinks try the Carmelitas margaritas made with thimbleberrys a very refreshing taste.
Cool atmosphere, good food, great service but 2 bucks for chips and salsa at a Mexican place?I enjoyed this place and would return if in the area again. Its got a cool western atmosphere and is nice and warm in the winter! I was curious to see about the wait staff after reading reviews saying they had issues, but our waitress was great! The food was good but nothing spectacular, I had the pork chimmichanga and my cousin had the quesadilla (see pic). The pork was slightly dry if Im being picky but it was pretty average Mexican food, which is amazing food in my book 👍.Only thing that I found shocking was the $2 charge for chips and salsa! I was on the lookout to see if they would tell us it wasnt free after reading the reviews on Google. The host asked us if we wanted chips and salsa when we sat down, didnt mention that it wasnt free. I said sure, because its a Mexican place, free chips and salsa is the norm which is what I expected. Thats why they lost a star for me.
Carmelitas is great! Their patio area is beautiful in the summer and their indoor area is great year-round. Although they never seem to have the chicken molé when Ive been there, the rest of their food is good enough that Ive never been disappointed. Great margaritas, large menu selection, kind staff. I recommend the Carmelitas thimbleberry hard cider, guacamole, enchiladas, and tamales!
The restaurant certainly is dressed to the nineswhen it comes to decor, and the seating is certainly comfortable even for a fair number of people. Im not a good one to go to for reviews of Mexican-style fare, but from what I experienced, the food was good and fair priced. My friends seemed to enjoy it quite a lot and have gone back several times. I have too, but my tastes lean in other directions. All in all, the only downside was on the first time we went. It took a long time for the meal, but with good friends to talk to, even that was not too apparent. That was also when they first opened so I wouldnt count it much now that theyve gotten some history. Id recommend it.
Great food, great atmosphere, outstanding service. Highly recommend the UP thimbleberry margarita!! The chips do come with a moderate charge with the meal; but theyre delicious and even including the fee, prices are moderate. Great gem in the keweenaw and totally worth a visit, even if you have to drive into the area. Perfect 5/7, would dine again.
Took awhile for them to notice we even walked in. Our cokes were very very watered down. The food was not very good, most came out of a can. Im from the detroit area so I guess Im used to good food. Taco Bell would have been better. Not to mention it was waaaay over priced and they charge for chips and salsa.
You know, lived here for now 3.5 years, and this is the first time I have eaten here. I should have tried it sooner, but went off of an experience that some one else had and shied away from it. Sat at the bar and had a great experience. The food was great. Had housechips and saIsa, and it wasnt hot but had a good flavor. Which was good. I dont like the salsa thats so hot that you have to keep eating to keep the burn down till your done. The pepper jack cheese sticks were great, especially with the salsa. I had the spicy pig burrito. To me it was a little salty, but I dont cook with salt, or add salt to my food when it hits the table. So with that being said, might not be salty to others. Girlfriend had the taco salad and she said it was also good, nice flavor. The blueberry margarita is the margarita to get if you like blueberry, over all the others. The beer was cold and the glass was diffanatly cold. The only bad was no fresh lime with the second drink or another cold glass. Still the first time there was a good experience, and great food. Will definitely go back and try another item. Also side note, all the staff seemed to be on top of service as I looked around.
Heard only great things about the place from friends so decided to try it... Atmosphere was unwelcoming and service wasnt very good - especially with very few occupied tables. Food was OK. Drink selection is pretty good. Didnt accept American Express credit card. Would recommend Habaneros in Hancock.
Got here at 11:45am, it is currently 12:43pm as I’m writing this. A group of people and I were the first ones here and we ordered basic food like Burritos and hamburgers. The wait was so long we decided to get our food in to go boxes now. The waiter told us the food was almost ready but In 3 different occasions. The 2nd occasion she said “They are boxing up your food now”. She also brought the cherry coke that was ordered over a half hour ago. So we pay for our food and then brings us our receipts back and says “The foods almost ready”. Thought it was being boxed ? Hmm sounds misleading. Shouldn’t take an hour to make food when your the only one their. And instead of apologizing she came up with an excuse saying “Should’ve called ahead of time”. Shouldn’t have had to if we were the first ones seated.
Truly terrible service and rude staff. Maybe related to coronavirus as they are only seating outside and have some inconsistent signage and no host. After being snapped at by the owner/ manager? (who was not wearing a mask inside) AND the waitress, we left without eating lest the experience continue on.
My roommate told me to come here because it was so amazing. Well, our waitress never acknowledged our existence so we seated ourselves. Then after about 5 or 10 minutes she came and got us drinks/took our orders. I asked how big the chimichanga were and they were absolutely tiny! So after she took our order we never saw her again until about 20 minutes later we asked if we got chips. They cost a dollar, Ive never been in a sit down Mexican restaurant that charger for chips--but fine. The salsa was ok. Well when our food finally arrived it looked awful. My enchiladas were half the size of any other Ive had, and had NO SAUCE. I have never an enchilada without sauce. Needless to say they were incredibly dry and tasted awful. Now the french fries were delicious, Ill give them that. Overall, this is the worst Mexican restaurant Ive ever been to. Horrible service and horrible food. Better off at Taco Bell
I used to eat here for years and tried a different food item every time I went there due to the fact that everything I ordered was not only distasteful their meals are also WAY WAY overpriced, the waitresses are rude, the owner Jerry is very extremely rude, hell even the bartender was rude to me. No smiles all frowns. Jerry is such an ass when hes drunk. To put it simply: AVOID THIS RESTAURANT AT ALL COSTS.
My family and I are new to the area and were willing to give Carmelitas a shot based on the recommendation of a friend. The ambiance was very dark and cold. The bathrooms were fairly dirty and old-looking. When we arrived, Eagles Greatest Hits was playing over the speakers, which is okay for a south-western style restaurant, however this was followed up by Nirvanas Greatest Hits which... yeah...When we sat at our table the waiter asked if we wanted chips before giving us the menu. We agreed assuming they were complimentary (as they have been at every other Mexican restaurant weve been to), however we found an extra charge for them on our bill. The chips themselves were cold and very salty, most likely because they were out of a bag, and the salsa was watered down and bland. The menu was not very impressive. I ordered the spicy pork burrito, my daughter got the kids cheese and bean burrito, and my wife got the guacamole quesadilla. The only reason the pork burrito was spicy was due to the amount of red sauce they put on the top, not due to any properties of the meat within the burrito. Additionally my meal came with both rice and refried beans, the child meal came with a choice of one or the other, and the quesadilla did not come with any sides. The food was okay, but it wasnt great. What stuck out most of all was the terrible service, especially during and at the end of our meal. Within minutes of our food arriving the waiter asked if everything came out okay, and the next time we saw him was about 20 minutes after we had finished with our meal. No refills on drinks were offered during the meal, and having ordered water served in a glass about the size of a shot, I could have used a refill or two. Also there seemed to only be about three people working altogether: the waiter, a bartender, and someone cooking food in the back. Regardless it wasnt that busy, and the excuse that our waiter gave for the poor service was because of a party of elderly people on the other side of the restaurant, which I felt was unprofessional. To top it off, when we finally did receive the check it was for another table and we had to wait longer for the correct one.We dont recommend Carmelitas. If youre looking for a good south-western/Mexican style restaurant try Habaneros in Hancock which is everything that Carmelitas wasnt.
This restaurant was amazing. We were there for lunch and were greeted immediately upon entering by our server. He was very attentive, brought us chips and salsa and drinks right away. He refilled our water glasses repeatedly while he waited on several other tables. I ordered the tamales with the red sauce and they were delicious. The red sauce had just the right amount of heat. The salsa that came with the chips was more like home made pico de gallo, but was so delicious if you like pico. The décor inside the historical building was beautiful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone as it is hard to find a restaurant of this caliber in the area. Im actually surprised by some of the negative reviews on here.
Above average margaritas, to wash down average Tex-Mex food. They charge a dollar for chips and salsa, which would be included at most Mexican joints. Food arrived 10 minutes after ordering. My chimichangas were too lightly fried and wouldve been bland without the spicy red sauce on top. Good thing the margs are decently strong.
It is in America, about as far nort of Mexico as it can be. My wife and I took a young couple with 2nd & 3rd grade girls. They loved it. We loved it. I got baja tacos (3 tacos) with deep fried whitefish fillets, rice & beans. Da wife got a nice taco salad. Fish fried crisp outside, tender inside, not greasy. I was satisfied. Six people ate for well under $60. Ya, my ma sez ya can feed da ole famly a week fer doz prices. Sometimes it is nice to treat somebody dont ya know.

2021-10-12My son and I both had the tacos with regular taco meat. I wasnt impressed. Corn tortillas fell right apart and the meat was very bland. The chips also tasted like they were store bought and straight out of a bag. The beans and rice were about what youd expect in a cafeteria. The table service was good but we did have to wait for quite a bit before we were even acknowledged and then wait to be seated while they looked relatively slow.Ill be back to give them another try though so watch for an updated review.

2021-09-24Fantastic find on the way to Copper Harbor area. We ordered a veggie delight burrito and a chimichanga, the chips and salsa for $2 and just had water though their margaritas looked great. The water was served in these blue stemless wine shaped glasses which I thought was neat. The food was great and we both enjoyed the sauce. They also have a plethora of hot sauces displayed on a whiskey barrel which girl loves her hot sauces!

2022-05-07I only speak on my behalf. I personally did not like the experience at all. I am from the west coast and love Mexican food of all kinds. I have traveled just to try different places and how each place differs. First they were out of 3 things I tries to order so I had to settle with tacos ( or whatever theyre supposed to be ). I literally took one bite, yes, just one and could barely even keep it in my mouth. Maybe it was just a bad day. I dont know but it was soggy and flavorless. It had 2 strips of lettuce and 3 tomato cubes. They meat was less than desirable. I didnt complain to my server because I was not going to replace it with any other item. That single bite was enough to never want anything there. I have heard great things but for me personally it was a bad overall experience.

2022-06-15Asked for cilantro on my tacos and they gave me a strange cilantro aioli instead. If you’re from the Chicago area avoid.Edit: honestly this was so bad I would fist fight the owners of this establishment.

2021-10-28So let me start by saying this is a Tex-Mex restaurant not just a Mex restaurant. The atmosphere is very cozy and historic and the crowd is usually a mix of tourists and locals who know what the best dine in restaurant in calumet is. The prices are very fair and the variety is excellent. I reccomend their Carne Asada if you want a nice piece of beef with a tangy and spicy sauce.

2022-02-16We tried this place for the first time on Sunday evening. My husband had one of the specials, which was blackened trout and it was very good. I had the steak and pepper Jack chimichanga… oh wow, it was sooo good! I still don’t have my taste back, a month after being sick, and I still knew it was great! Thankfully, I could taste the Thimbleberry margarita, which was wonderful. We finished the night with some dessert to go, Turtle Cheesecake… it’s better than it sounds. Our server was so authentic and just great overall. We will definitely be back when we return to the UP.

2022-06-26I love the U.P. but Mexican food is not a staple up here. This place is good for its drinks but don’t expect much from the food…edible but certainly not going to come close to the best Mexican food you’ve ever had.
