It wasnt very busy as we came later in the evening, so it felt like we had the museum much to ourselves. With that, I was able to take so many pictures and patiently take in the exhibits of our rich historical culture. I would definitely recommend it to anyone whos interested in American history.
For years this was the largest museum in the world, until the Smithsonian was built in D.C. However, it has so many jewels nested within its walls, that no other museum can compare. The staff is great, the exhibits are phenomenal, and the building is beautiful. Make sure you go and support often 🖤🙏🏽 #HOLLA
Staff are all friendly and happy. Building is well maintained. Currently there is Exhibition on KING Tutankhamun, which is wonderful. And Still We Rise exhibition is so real, astonishing, crafty nicely organized and emotional. I really appreciate the Cicerone, who is knowledgeable, powerful and passionate.
This was an amazing experience. I like the way its set up, to take you through time. Its like a good story book. I had so many emotions while viewing the exhibit. And nothing really prepares you for what youre going to see and feel. I would definitely recommend. Unfortunately you can not take photos inside the main exhibit
I take my babies here a few times a year. You couldnt possibly learn everything in this museum in one day. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff are very helpful. They offer free admission some days and have different events within the museum. This is a great place to take children for a grand learning experience!
A beautiful place to learn about humankinds mistakes. A very deep and powerful history takes you to wrong doings from the past, offering in the same time the key to avoid them in the future. The staff was very professional and helpful. You can use a guide, but the gallery is self explanatory.Dont miss it if you are in Detroit!
One of my favorite places to visit and participate in various functions. Until recently, the largest museum ever of African American History artifacts and exhibits. Continuing to provide programming that is accessible to all. An educational experience well worth the visit.
The exhibits are an honest look at the past. The journey from Africa through slave ship to the sale of people was creative and an emotional journey. I wish the area with contributions of African Americans was a bit larger, but space is limited - the layout here was amazing as well. The special exhibit, King Tut, was interesting and I look forward to going back to see other special exhibits in the future.
Very nice museum with thoughtful exhibits. Some of the interactive exhibits were hands off due to COVID protocols but we still enjoyed the journey from Africa through the Civil Rights movement. We did spend some time reading the information on all of the exhibits and it took us about an hour and a half to get through everything.
The experience here is informative and worth the visit. The museum is beautiful in decor and offers a variety of African American past, & present information to stimulate your mind and allow you to reflect on what our ancestors went through long before we were thought of. Take a stroll down the past of our culture and see what amazing things you will learn!
My last visit has been far too long. When I did visit the vintage post cards from some lynchings in America. All displays throughout the facility were well organized for anyone to easily follow the growth of America through the eyes of the African peoples that were brought here. Absolutely bringing more family to visit, learn and gain some insight to who the builders of this country were. Back this year 2022. Thanks
This was great! It is so much bigger than it appears from outside! There was so much to see and experience. It was also a great value for what they charge for entry. Be sure to donate a little extra. The gift shop was nice and had some art pieces for sale also. We didnt even get to see the whole museum because we underestimated the size and content of the place.
I have gone to the Charles H. Wright museum many times for school research or just to see the captivating exhibit Still I Rise but to be at Aretha Franklins viewing was magical, magnificent, iconic, and historic. I am now anticipating her exhibit September 21, 2018. If it is anything like the Motown exibit we (Detroit) and visitors are in for a treat!!
I love this place! Ive been countless times. Once I took my daughter and I didnt tell her that the Harriet Tubman figure moved and talked. Omg it was so hilarious when she darn near jumped out of her skin from harriets movement and voice 😂I do recall that if you were a bank of America member you get a discount. Pleasant staff!
Haven’t been back to the The Wright Museum since I was a kid.The When We Rise was an amazing experience. It really dives into the history of Detroit and the world through the African-American experience. You need about 2 or 3 hours to really take in the exhibit and explore the history of Detroit.
Wonderful and informative museum. The staff was so cordial and engaging. You definitely need more than 1 visit to take in all of the information, so allow yourself time or plan a 2nd visit to the area. There is so much of American and African history that we arent aware of or that we learn late in life -- this museum is a must to visit so that history isnt hidden.
The museum was an eye opening experience. It illuminated our nations dark history of the enslavement of West African to showing the light our nation can be once those slaves were set free from the peculiar institution, and given an opportunity to live as freemen and women.
Its a great opportunity to experience true black culture and the history that helped to mold this American culture. The museum not only gives you an opportunity to see the great contributions in history, but offers a chance to also learn vital information that is needed to reach not only the African American culture but all cultures. Definitely encourages me to become a member this year!Mr.W.McLin III, M. Ed
The staff person took great care of me. I recommend buying a membership. It is well worth. The museum hour have been changed due to covid. Call ahead. The exhibits are amazing, esp the current one Marios paintings. As for parking, if you are lucky, there is parking on the street just north of the museum, the price is right. I wasnt. The museum store salesperson was knowledgeable, a student at wccc. He kept busy during beating up.the store but answered my ? When asked
Excellent experience! The Africian AmericianFestival was Exception! The Vendors werewere well stocked with a large variety of merchandise to choose from. They offered great stage Entertainment .Everyone complimenting each other,Smiles everywhere,Great Variety of Music in the atmosphere. This was one of the best yet!!! Everything and everyone was so peaceful. The great added blessing was.....No Rain. I only wish it was twoweekends in a row. (Some of the vendors were from New York,Chicago and other far away places.) This will give Detroiters additional time to shop and enjoy due to so manychoices already offered for the weekend.Overall I give them 10 star if possible
Very emotional and educational. I was torn learning about every single thing about the unfortunate African voyage from beginning to the final stop in the Americas. Other than that there is so much rich history of African Americans to be proud of that is at the museum
Excellent permanent exhibit on African Amercan history, including insight into several different West African cultures, a harrowing representation of the Middle Passage, the hideous institution of slavery in North America, and the long struggle for civil rights, equity, and justice for Black people. Some interesting sidebars specifically about Detroit. Currently, a thoughtful traveling exhibit on Black women in the American womens suffrage movement and a stunning collection of artwork, mostly oil paintings, by Mario Moore. The work by Moore alone is worth a visit.
The main exhibit is haunting and emotional. Everyone should experience this museum. My only issue is that due to covid restrictions we could only get passes for the hour before closing. We tried to come a bit early so we didnt have to rush. We were turned away. Ok, respect safety protocols but Id recommend adjusting appointments. We barely had enough time to get through the whole museum. We definitely felt rushed at the end. And the young intern at the gift shop allowed us to roam around for 5 mins (we made sure to get inside before the they officially closed) and we when we were ready to buy plenty of items --he said he had closed & thought we were just looking Really?! So you lost business and almost soured a wonderful experience. Exhibits get a 5. External experience/staff 3.5
My sister and I had time for one museum. We were so happy we choose right. It was a free day, so no admission. The entrance is breathtaking and set the stage. We saw an exhibit on hair and one on black seamstresses/fashion creators through history (mindblowing). The Still We Rise piece was humbling and eye opening. To experience that history on your own, the way it was designed really put things together (Im a visual learner). Great for all ages, whether your fully knowledgeable or not. They also had an event downstairs and I was able to purchase from local artists and jewelry makers. Cannot wait to visit again.
The museum is quite impressive. Not only does it provide a detailed account of the African American experience from the days of slavery, but it has an in-depth view into Detroit’s own rich and diverse history. I’m very happy my family and I came during our time in Detroit. We left with a level of knowledge we did not have before and a renewed sense of the importance of allyship between marginalized communities to ensure equity for all.
This museum is worthy of visiting for the architecture alone. Pay attention to the beautiful doors and the glorious dome. History is controversial but do not shy away from this museum. Visit their website and find an exhibit that captures your interest and go! The current exhibit of Queen is amazing.
First time visit even tho we have always lived here. We spent 3+ hours seeing all the exhibits. The permanent exhibit “And Still We Rise” takes the longest. It is very moving and extremely well done. We learned and relearned much today. The two side art exhibits did not take too long but were very entertaining and worthwhile. The staff and docents were very friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome. (And in case you’re wondering, we are not African-American)Highly recommend this for everyone.
We found this museum to be a very important lesson in history. From the minute we walked in the door to our exit about 4 hours later we learned so much. The displays are interesting, though to get the most out of them there is quite a bit of reading to do. A few of the exhibits need some updating, but overall most of the displays were interesting and well-done. The staff was very friendly and helpful making sure we got the most out of our visit.
This is an amazing and powerful museum, an important educational experience for anyone. The thought and time that are put into the “And Still We Rise” exhibit was breath taking. Easily takes 2+ hours but is engaging the entire time. An extremely good value for the tickets too, only $7 for adults! You will not regret this one bit. One thing to note is that you can not take photos inside any of the exhibits.
Loved this place!! It was so interesting and rich with history. The depiction of slavery made me feel like I was truly there and grateful that I didnt have to live during that time. The cost was very inexpensive for the amount of information that you learn. I will definitely visit again!! Highly recommend to all!!
Visited the When We Rise exhibit and was very impressed. It was good, but there were too many of the interactive stations missing. Their were a lot of lost opportunities to educate. The architecture of the building is impressive, the rotunda demands your attention when you walk in. I would appreciate the support given to traditional museums at this location. A little TLC would enhance the experience and maximize the cultural experience. The staff seemed to appreciate their jobs and were welcoming.
The And Still We Rise exhibit is breathtakingly well executed. The staff are warm, welcoming and professional. The gift shop is a treat. The facility well kept. It was the perfect Mothers Day outing for my friends and me. When I return to Michigan, I will plan to visit again.
Beautiful space. Loved the trip from african coast to the new world in the cargo ship, it was heavy and emotional. It was worth the 5 stars alone.I do wish there was more actual art like paintings and sculptures done by black artists because there are so many artists creating today. Overall, it was a dope experience. I think there are more present day artists that could be incorporated into a space like this.
I really enjoyed my most recent visit. The staff was really friendly and greeted us with a smile. The main exhibit was very informative and delivered a hair raising experience. Its crazy to learn how and why actual people were enslaved and abused. With this exhibit its easy to see how the ghosts of the American slavery era is still influencing todays policy. In reality this country roll has not changed much. My only suggestion is better lighting to make reading the walls easier.
This was, by far, the best African American museum that I have been to, so far. It wonderfully captured the journey from Africa, and the making of a slave, to present day, and our celebrating our first black President. The exhibits were breathtaking! I had to pause for a long moment when i stepped into the exhibit displaying what it was like for my ancestors in the belly of the ship. I will be back. I loved it.
We visited on a cold, quiet mid-week winter day. We spent a little over two hours in the museum, and could have spent more time. The museum is beautiful, architecturally, with an impressive entrance rotunda. The exhibit And Still We Rise provides an historical overview of African American history and is very well done. We learned a lot about the history of the slave trade, and the depictions of a slave ship made a huge impression. The only disappointment was that most of the interactive components of the exhibit seemed to be either turned off or not functioning. We also visited the Aretha exhibit, which was small but enjoyable, and the hair and fashion exhibits which honestly were fun but didnt contribute much to our understanding of African American culture or history in those areas.Everyone working at the museum was very friendly and enthusiastic-- staff and volunteers both. In fact, our interactions with volunteers really made our trip special-- they were knowledgeable, personable, and just lovely. After we left, we commented on how outstanding our interactions were with people at this museum compared to some other world class museums we have visited!
I was totally excited when my clients chose this museum as their wedding venue! The staff there is very professional, really easy to work. They made my clients wedding feel like a priority. The historic artifacts served as a unique backdrop which set the tone for the day! This is definitely one of Detroit’s precious jewels!
Brilliant museum!! The we will rise again exhibition is comprehensive and inventively laid out. We spent a good 2 hours in this part and I wish we’d had more time. We were there for a small Aretha Franklin exhibition and a couple of others on fashion and hair. I really can’t speak highly enough of this museum and it’s staff. A must for all visits to Detroit and such an important part of the city’s modern history.
Breathtaking, heartbreaking, and very educational. Please being some tissues when you go, as you will see and experience the horrors that our African brothers and sisters faced at the hands of cruel money hungry people. I have been to my fair share of museums including the Holocaust museum in Washington DC, and I would consider parts of this museum just as powerful and heartbreaking. The staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have.
Staff was on time and excellent helping with my Mothers 80th Birthday dinner. We went on a tour and it was an experience I will never forget. People must come and see what, where it all begun, slavery and the history. I cried for my ancestors and I thank God they dont have to suffer like animals anymore.
We were late getting there, so were only had an hour to spend in the museum. It was beautiful. well put together, extremely realistic and extremely emotion provoking. I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND that everyone that can go, GO and bring your children so that can FEEL and UNDERSTAND the struggle we as a people have endured! It took me years to get there but I ABSOLUTELY will return and spend HOURS !
I loved every minute of my experience there. The staff pretty much had to tell me to leave, I was there 3 hours and way past closing time and I didnt even finish reading all our history. A must visit for every African American. Friendly and courteous staff. Lol, a BIG difference from the Motown Museum in regards to customer service.
A wonderful, beautiful place to visit. A must see. We enjoyed the Aretha Franklin exhibit. Some of the interactive exhibits were not working. It was disappointing not to be able to hear Motown music selections or the gospel songs in the church exhibit. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Talking to a live person waste of time go on the websight to get accurate information. Went there after talking to someone on the phone 3 times they never mention by * Reservations only* Good thing we didnt have to drive that far. Its called customer service just tell the customer to go on the websight when there ready. They no its by reservations only. Thumb down to the person answering the phone. Complete customer service wanted.
Every time I visit I see or learn something new! This is not a one-time kinda museum. And my mission is to bring and help educate all my friends and family about the importance of bringing our children here to learn not just our history, but history period. I absolutely love it here.
Very educational experience for all ages and races. Highly satisfied with the detailed visual and audio. There was a lot of work put into every piece of information presented. Please plan at least a few hours for your visit. Take the time to engage in conversation with children and teens so they can understand how far we have come as a nation.
They give you a timeframe to enter when you reserve a time and when we arrived most of the doors were locked we had to walk all the way around and then when we did get to the right door they said we were too late. BY ONE MINUTE!! Which was because they locked all of the doors AN HOUR EARLY! Absolutely terrible establishment and a waste of a trip, do better!
Its such an experience. I took one of the tours with my class (our guide was Johnathan), and he really told us all the information in such a beautiful way, despite the tough topics discussed at times. Its full of history and leaves you full of wonder and amazement. I think everyone should go to this place.
This was a great museum. We learned a lot about the African American experience from the beginning. We loved each exhibit and how these exhibits brought the story to life. Our children were able to understand the material even though they are young. The staff was friendly and helpful. We look forward to returning again to see new exhibits.
Fellow teachers and I brought our students from Flint, Michigan to the museum today. What a phenomenal experience. Doug and Jonathan, our docents, were fantastic. They made sure we had a spectacular time. They were engaging, fun, informative, and so personable. Ms McKinney, the educator who led our craft class, was equally engaging and energetic. I have taken classes to the museum in the past, but none of the visits were as enjoyable as this one. Based on the conversation I heard on the way home on the bus, I got the feeling my students had an even better time than I thought.
I learned so much more about my history and how much we put into this world. I am so happy this museum exists. I guarantee that you will learn more here than you did in grade school (unless your school taught you more than just MLK and Rosa Parks). There is a lot of levels so bring your walking shoes. This is beautiful and the world needs to see this.
I went to a talk and reception for an exhibit on President Obama given by photojournalist Andre Smith. The photos are breathtaking and inspirational. Smith explained his process for determining the best angle, space, subjects and subject matter to shoot. His attention to detail is both superb and amazing. The exhibit runs through June 30, 2019 and is worth seeing.
We have had the opportunity to visit some of the largest black museums in the country the one in Washington DC, Philadelphia & Cincinnati... But none of those brought to life the experience of being stored in a slave ship as cargo... It is a visual and autubel experience that you will never forget. It also led to us purchasing a family membership to bring back the remainder of our family and grand kids to see and hear the experience.
I LOVE the Charles H. Wright Museum. I frequent the Museum often, but make it a priority to be there during Kwanzaa celebrations. The Charles H. Wright is the crown jewel of Detroit, and I pray it continues to provide great cultural and historical knowledge for posterity! Peace and blessings.
This is truly a place where history comes alive. I was amazed at how much history the museum itself has. From its humble beginnings till now its full of awe. A Great place for meetings and events catered or not. Good for school outings must visit if you live in Detroit, Michigan or out of state.
Loved it, Loved it. What a wonderful experience. I would like to go back and spend more time. So much knowledge and history to be shared. What a eye opening opportunity. To see what I have read in books gave me a better understanding on what really happened. Take the time to fill what others have lived.
Impressive and educational museum. Beautiful exhibits with full scale recreations of traditional African markets, slave ships, and historical black-owned businesses in Detroit. I actually preferred this museum to the National Museum of African American History in DC. They dont allow photography, however, which I think is a shame. The building was almost empty when I was there on a Saturday afternoon. Social media posts could help bring awareness and create interest in attending
Every young person should attend this museum and get a guided tour. The school should then hold discussions to explore the past and analyze to change the future for this country. This is a great start.Next, they should attend a Jewish Museum like the one on Richmond Road inn Cleveland,Ohio. Then hold another discussion and continue until they conclude that America is a Melting Pot and it doesnt be long to one group.

2022-05-16The CHW Museum was great! This was the youngest’s first visit and she was fascinated. The King Tut Exhibit was so worth the visit. There’s an exhibit, “Still We Rise” which shared info regarding our history from its origin, successes, struggles, natural resources, to present day progression. The tour guides are amazing, animated, which kept it intriguing and knowledgeable. We couldn’t see everything in this one visit so we are looking forward to returning soon!

2022-06-28A must see stop for anyone visiting Detroit. The Still I Rise exhibit is great. The King Tut exhibit is a must see. It is one of the priciest museums Ive visited throughout the world, but it was worth the cost of admission.

2022-06-21While it is a great venue, I would suggest calling ahead. Our group was not able to see the whole museum during normal business hours because they were closing early for a wedding. We had purchased tickets ahead of time online but could only explore the museum for 45 minutes because of the early closure. There was no indication this was occurring when purchasing tickets, and several in our group were disappointed. The venue can obviously be rented out, so I would call ahead to verify availability. Other than the lack of notice and short visit, everything was beautiful and staff were nice.

2022-07-03I was not impressed with any of the exhibits. We went to see the King Tut exhibit but I was not impressed with the replicas. I felt that for the rest of the exhibits they missed an opportunity to show more African history and instead focused on the worst possible which is slavery. I feel there is so much more to share with people who visit. I personally wanted to see more about the origins of African culture. I did not learn anything that is not common knowledge. Sorry but its how I felt upon leaving. Instead of being impressed..I felt they showcased the oppression..not the rising.

2021-09-04Necessary space. We need more spaces to highlight African American art, History and heritage. I loved how they had the flags of all these countries with African descent on the main hall.
