Dont believe the bad reviews on this place! Seriously, this is the best Chinese food Ive ever eaten! We were so impressed by the number of vegetarian options. The food was fresh and you can tell its homemade with much love. It was so nice to have tofu that wasnt deep fried in my dish, along with a flavorful sauce and perfectly crisp tender, fresh vegetables. They are generous with their rice too. The vegetarian hot and sour soup was divine! The staff was so attentive, friendly, warm, and kind. The place has charm and is cozy. The server apologized for the wait for our food, but we werent in a hurry and enjoyed a relaxing meal. It wasnt a long wait. The portion size was so generous that I had to take half of it home and the kind staff member sent me home with some rice. This place is top notch and you will love your food. The others complaining in their reviews are off base and rude.
The folks who leave bad reviews here are expecting this place to be a typical Chinese restaurant. While Chia Shiang does have the standard offering of Americanized Chinese food the real treasure is a few more pages into the menu. Yes the menu is large and does not have great descriptions but that does not matter because all the food is awesome. I have tried things here that I would never try other places and it is very rare I have a dish I dont like. The staff does not speak the best English but they do work hard. This place can be a rewarding adventure for those looking to get away from the same old plates. Eat Local, Eat Here!Update 2021: 6/19/2021I ordered takeout recently and did not get what I was expecting. So the next time I called I was very specific about what I wanted. I was told they have a new chef and the menu has changed. The guy on the phone did not know what happened to the couple that used to run the restaurant. Not sure what this will be like when they reopen for dine in...but the takeout food I have got has not been the same quality.
This place deserves Five stars for the food. Absolutely wonderful. Ordering take out is always amazing. They are very consistent and their portions are very big. However, their service is deplorable. Ive sat down to dine in twice now and both times waited about ten minutes before offered food, drink, or a place to sit. Both times, I needed a new drink since I found bits of gunk in my water/pop. Both visits I found myself being eyed and scrutinized by the waitstaff. I love their foods taste and picking up for a delivery is speedy but until they up the ante on their dine-in service, they are only three stars.
The old legacy authentic Chia Shiang is gone. This place has changed owner and the food is no where close to what was offered before.PS: The new owner replied below and I wish you the best luck developing practical skills after graduation from a culinary school. What matters is the final product, and not your degree. There is not many recent reviews and one other reviewer has also mentioned the ownership change and degradation of quality.
Not sure what other reviewers are griping about. Had a great takeout experience from Chia Shiang today. While there was no one at the counter initially, a man came out and let me know that someone would be with me shortly. I ordered boiled fish in spicy soup from the Chinese menu and the amount of food for $17 was mind boggling. They even gave it to me in a reusable, sturdy plastic container.
Recently relocated to the area and saw good reviews for this restaurant; but, was disappointed with both the price and the quality. The food was not tasty or well done. The order was also processed incorrectly, resulting in an additional $20 worth of unwanted rice (two large boxes). Explaining this to the owner proved difficult, so we didnt bother correcting her. There also was upcharge for any combination of switching out sides - sides are apparently linked to an entree no matter what.If you are thinking of getting food in Ann Arbor for the prices they charge, there are much better options.
Love this place. Some of my favorite Chinese food anywhere. Order from the more authentic part of the menu. Stir fried fish with pickled chilis is my favorite dish anywhere in town. Cumin lamb is terrific. Lots of other great food too. And the people who work there are really sweet.
Carry out was for 7:38p today. Got there at 7:35 and was told to wait another 20 minutes. Came back didnt up getting my food until 8:15p. I ordered General Tsos Chicken. Only ended up eating 2 bites. The sauce was vinegary and thats about it. Not sweet nor spicy. Food is noticeably malodorous, although the chicken itself was fine. Overall after waiting an extra 45 minutes and receiving food that I didnt even eat I dont recommend this place at all. I would give them the benefit of the doubt as they were packed on a Friday evening, but the food was not redeeming at all.
Our first and THE LAST time to go to Chia Shiang. The service was horrible. My colleagues family and my family had lunch there today, half of the entrees were not served until more than one hour after we ordered. The waitresses had no respect and even placed a wrong order for us without an apology. The restaurant was not busy and they served new customers first. The check was $112 + tax, we were a little unsatisfied and gave $15 tip. One waitress stopped me and asked me why the tip was less than 15%. 15% is the minimum no matter what. She said. I explained that we are unhappy about the service, she replied: I really do not understand why you are unhappy. Before we left, my colleagues wife wanted to order some yogurt for kids, the waitress refused to serve us and asked us to leave.Kids were shocked and upset.
Absolutely amazing. The menu is gigantic and its kind of hard to identify what anything actually is, but if you have a broad palate you will not go hungry or be disappointed.Incredible eggplant, pork belly that must be tasted to be believed, wonderful mushroom stir fry, its a really incredible selection of great food.I went with ~6 other people and we all shared everything, family-style. I encourage you to do the same, to try as much of the menu as you can.
This is the first time I ate here. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly, helpful staff. The menu is like a book and I plan to try some of the many offerings, but today I had to try the Mongolian Beef because I have been unable to find a place that prepares it the way I remember it from years ago when it became my go to dish. It was close to perfect although a bit heavy on the sugar and missing the crispy rice noodle bed. The atmosphere was pleasant with subdued lighting and scenes of authentic Asian cooking on the flat screen. It was very clean and the single stall bathroom was accessible to wheelchairs. Altogether a satisfying experience.
Old, spoiled, oily cold food, terrible service. I took a friend to show her “authentic Chinese food”, but it was a terrible mistake on my part: she asked for no meat dishes several times, but as we were eating, we found meat in our cold oily soup. It was so disgusting and old looking we could not even identify what kind of meat it was. Service was pretty terrible, no matter what you ask, they nod their head yes, and do nothing of what you said. We asked to reheat the cold soup, after few min they came back with it but it was quite the same temperature. Never waste a penny on this restaurant, terrible choice, it s more fresh to eat from the dumpster.
I was randomly craving chinese food so I went here assuming it was a normal restaurant. Seating is very quick and the restaurant has pretty good outside views wherever you sit. One dish i would recommend is the crispy jellyfish because its a pretty good experience but the best part about the restaurant was the hot dishwasher guy in the back. Im pretty sure his name is Elijah but hes smoking hot and his cooking skills are better than Gordan Ramsey. If anyone is looking for food and a hot cook, ask for Elijah 😉
Without question the best Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor - but only if you like unconventional, the authentic, the adventuresome eating. Its possible to get very spicy food here; many dishes are very generously portioned. The long menu can take 20 minutes to get through and even longer to understand. Really, nothing else compares to this place in A2. Id give it 5 stars but quality can be a little erratic, chancy and some dishes arent always available. And its hardly a lavish environment. Many many Asians eat here.
My wife and I were having a quiet dinner. The wait staff hovered over us, taking plates, bowls, and trays away as soon as we finished each part of our meal. They kept bringing the next course before we finished the course we had. Soon after leaving the bill they returned and asked if we were paying by cash or credit. I said I would use my credit card to pay as we left. We sat a few minutes more talking as we finished our pot of tea. They came back and asked us to leave so they could seat others. The restaurant wasn’t full. There were open tables. We were there less than 35 minutes. I asked the hostess why they were kicking us out when all we wanted was a quiet meal together. We were treated extremely rude. They cared more about the incoming customers than the customers they already had. This was our second time there—and now our last. The food is good but the service was very, very bad. We were so insulted and left quietly and unhappy. The owners need to retrain their staff on how to treat their customers—or they might not have as many customers soon. We’ve never been treated so bad before.
Got there at 7pm. some of the food came at 8:38. 8:55 the rest of the food came to the table. Sent the chicken lo mein back. Had distinct plastic taste to it. The general tso chicken very bland and oily. The orange chicken no taste of oranges, waitress informed the table that it was the general tso chicken, didnt taste a difference between the two. The sweet and sour shrimp was cold the coating was soggy. The waitress was nice and very apologetic to the guest. Very much under staffed. The soup came out after all the main dishes where served. Will we go back? Not a chance.
Ordered take out from this place. Interior was nice and seemed very clean. Staff was helpful and polite when ordering on the phone and picking up the food. Large parking lot which is rare for how close it is to downtown. The food itself I found to be bland and oily (lo mein noodles, shrimp fried rice, pineapple shrimp). Overall, my Chinese food craving wasnt satisfied. I wouldnt recommend this place unless its locationally convenient. Additionally, my lo mein noodles were packaged in an unsealed, foldable paper box and the sauce and had leaked all over the bag and other items which was problematic.
This is easily the best and most authentic Chinese restaurant you will find in Michigan. It has a MASSIVE menu with every Chinese dish you could want (included the infamous Szechuan sauce). The menu is organized in a fashion that makes it very easy to find what you want, despite the size. On top of a huge selection, almost anything you order comes out in roughly ten minutes. The service here is very quick. The restaurant is clean and the food tastes great. I would highly recommend if you like Chinese food.
Our whole family was there and waiting time for the order took so long. But this is not big problem for us at the time. The worst thing was the pork we ordered had very bad smell, a waitress said it looked not right and agreed to re-order the other one. the new one had same bad smell from the port meat. so we left without eating anything in that plate. very disappointed! never go back.
We took our exchange student here for Chinese New Year, and it was packed! There is a menu in English and Chinese, and there are a lot of choices from more Americanized Chinese dishes to much more traditional fare. The bonus for us was that they also have a Malaysian menu in the very back--which was perfect since our exchange student is from Malaysia and we thought the closest place we could get Malaysian food was Detroit! We really enjoyed our meal and look forward to returning when it isnt so busy since it (understandably) took a long time to order and get our food.
It looks bombed out and decrepit, however it is hands down the best Chinese food Ive ever had. They have great renditions of the Americanized food as well as Amazing Authentic Chinese food. I go at least once a month and try something new everytime. Every dish is usually enough food for 2 people. We usually each order a dish and share; so we can have left overs.
They close at 10. We called at 9:10 and asked if we could place an order. They sounded annoyed but asked what we wanted. We were told it would take 15 minutes. At 9:30 as we were minutes away, I received a phone call from them telling me my order was ready. When we arrived, we were greeted by three employees sitting at a table, clearly waiting for us. Two of them didnt acknowledge us. The third, who we paid, made a point of telling us they had been waiting for us. The fried rice was the worst Ive ever had. Extremely bland and overcooked. Pork looked weird.
Great restaurant for authentic or American style chinese cuisine. Friendly staff, private parking lot, fair prices. Most importantly, the menu is enormous. They will hand you a full on book when you are seated. Lots of options to appease American tastes for chinese and lots of more authentic food options. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly, massive veggie section with a variety of faux meat choices. Ive been coming here for years, just recently visited again and the food is superb. Highly recommended.
This place was terrible. The staff was rude and racist. I ordered a crispy duck which was way too salty. Told the staff immediately, who failed to remove the duck from the table, and ordered a chicken fried rice instead (which was good). At the end, they tried to charge us for the duck, yelling at us in front of all the other customers that you should know what you ordered if you dont pay for the duck, Im going to call the police next time you go to a chinese restaurant, order chicken and broccoli. Never again.
Gee, this restaurant should come with warning. Very unfriendly staff - felt like you were intruding. Was told a to go order would take 20 minutes, even tho there was hardly a soul in the place. A shrimp dish - so agreed which is the easiest fastest thing to cook. The waitress (owner?) started chatting with another chinese person who came in and they talked right next to me loudly for a half hour. Finally they ended and she cked in the kitchen to get the order. So leaving and going to my office I find this inedible dish of cooked in hot oil shrimp - that are still entirely in the shell! Geez - I had told her Id never eaten there before she could have warned me. Too hot to de-shell, you have to wait until the food is luke warm so as to not burn your fingers. The shrimp is in a very spicy sauce but its all over the shell as they werent shelled and once you get the shell off they taste basicly like plain boiled shrimp. Had I any idea that they would serve hot shrimp in the shell..... and very expensive for what they give you. Youd think at that price theyd do a bit of labor and take the shell off as almost anyone else would do.
This is the best chineese chineese food in Ann Arbor. Good portions and superb meals. Price is good, for Ann Arbor. Everything costs 25% more here. The atmosphere is never negative, but there are no ornate fixtures if that is what you are looking for. We always recive fair and attentive service from one of the young ladies, an older lady just gets us what we ask for or need. We are there for the food so it serves us just fine. From 1 to 10: Food-12, Price-10, Atmosphere-6, Service-5
The food was overpriced and bland. The white rice was cooked with too much water, which caused it to have a strange, mushy, soft consistency. We ordered takeout on the spot (we didn’t order ahead of time), but the food was prepared quickly anyway.I wouldn’t recommend this place.
Ive tried this place a few times because its close to my house. I went there on a Sunday and tried to order hot and sour soup. I was told they dont serve this soup on Sundays, so I was disappointed, especially because it was listed on the menu. I also tried to order a dish, also listed on the menu and they stated they did not serve that on Sundays either. I ended up ordering something random, which was fine. More recently, I called to place an order to be picked up, thinking that would save me some time. I was told there was a two hour wait and then the call was disconnected (on purpose, by the woman who answered). I called back again, told the woman we were disconnected and asked if I were to come in, if it would be any quicker. She said no and then we were disconnected. I called back and mentioned the poor connection and told her I would be willing to wait the two hours for the pick up order, not because I wanted to but because I felt I was being blown off and she told me she was not accepting orders. I noted she didnt close for 2.5 hours and that I felt there was still time and then asked why she would quote me a wait time if it wasnt something she was willing to do. She said they were busy and again disconnected the call. Outside of these most recent experiences, the food was average as well as the price. Food is presented nicely though. The restaurant could use some updating as there are flowers painted on the ceiling where there have been water leaks on the white tiles and there is often sauce splatters on the walls by the tables, so it is a bit tacky/dirty.
The secret to this place is order off the Chinese Menu. Its really amazing traditional chinese food.Off the beaten path and a bit out there, its the favorite place where Asian grad students take their parents for dinner (when theyre paying). The Xin Jiang style spicy chicken is my favorite (be warned its a Whole chicken flash fried in peanut oil, shredded and heavily spiced). And the lima beans in picked vegetables (mellow mild and not what you expect.)If you want other things, the fish soup in sichuan sauce is amazing but is enough for 4-6 people. The lamb in cumim and peanuts in sea weed are also intereting and off the beaten path.If you have trouble explaining what you want point to the items on the chinese menu or ask for the manager. Its worth it!
Worst service I ever had! Food was great, but the service was awful. Asked for water two times and got one glass of water and there was seven of us. Everyone got one napkin and thats it. Someone spilled a small cup of tea when when the waitress handed her the food instead of putting it down on the table. Messed our order up and they were very rude and then demanded a tip before they gave me my change. Never in my life have I received such terrible service, and first time I didnt leave a tip!
The food is very good here but, like many of the other posts about the terrible service, its true. I have been there several times only to time and again experience frustratingly slow service and rude management. The lady with the pearls treats you like gum on the bottom of her shoe.
In order to evaluate this restaurant, we created a special account. The dishes are very salty and the fish is not fresh. Chicken is also. Not only that, the quality of the staff is extremely different. Chasing the door to tip. Not giving them a satisfactory tip will give you a stinky face. It’s just a matter of spending money to buy a good taste for customers who want a bit of taste. Stay away from this restaurant.
I feel so bad to eat today. Not only in the dish, but also a hair in the meal. The waiter serving just said that there were too many people. One of the two glasses of water smelled stinky. I dont know if its the water or the cup. Ordered several dishes, and the waiters said that this dish would take a long time to prepare, so that the guests didnt know what to order. I dont understand why this business looks good. I think the taste is quite average and the service is rather poor. It may be because it is closer to the school. But I will not go again. It was a terrible experience to eat there today. The food is not sanitary since I found two hairs in the entree and the rice and the water smells funny. The service is terrible as well. On top of that, the food tastes bad. Would not go there again!

2022-05-19Agreed with most reviews here that old legacy authentic Chia Shiang is gone. Ordered twice for carry-out since the pandemic and were not satisfied with the dishes we ordered. For me personally I would just simply not go back though this place used to be one of my favs in AA.Owners replies on Google are also horrible. People leave negative feedback on your business is because they arent satisfied with their experience and want to bring the issue to your attention. It doesnt necessarily mean they are your competitor. Its very rude if you accuse someone leaves negative comments to your business intentionally but cant list any proven evidences. Totally understand running a small business is not easy and negative reviews could hurt your reputation, but its just really unprofessional if you cant keep a hold of emotions and read customers feedback objectively.

2019-11-18Had a nice dinner for 3 here. Everything was really good, though anticipate spice. They made one dish with just half spice for my mother in law and it was still too spicy. They had lots of vegetarian options, and even plenty with mock meats too. They gave me the wrong dish, but they one they served me I thought of ordering anyhow and it was great (Chinese eggplant with garlic sauce). My wife found a lotus root dish that looked good based on a Yelp picture, so she showed them. They didnt bring the dish from the picture but another lotus root dish. It was enormous--it took up a whole casserole dish. Unfortunately it was an unexpected $45 too. Overall we would like to go back and try more, but next time we will be more exact with what we are ordering.

2017-12-03Love this cozy restaurant. Best place to get authentic Shanghai and Zhejiang style dishes in Ann Arbor. You can get solid northern dishes here as well. They have the best quality of food and friendliest service among Chinese restaurants near the central campus.

2019-10-27A pretty authentic Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor. They provide a bunch of Shanghainese dishes, in addition to cuisine from other areas of China. “Liang Pi” ( a Xi-an style appetizer) would only be available on the weekends. “Xiang You Shan Hu” (a Shanghainese style rice field eel) would only be available upon reservation. Moreover, they also provide Shanghai style salty soybean milk. If you haven’t tried that before, I suggest you do so. Their servers are very kind.

2022-01-01This used to be a good restaurant. Alas, no longer. Out of the three dishes in our take out order, one was barely edible and two were just nasty. Especially disappointed with the Sichuan boiled beef which was truly foul.Never. Going. Back.

2022-03-15Delicious, I usually order for delivery, sometimes Chowbus is busy and I pick up the food instead. Always good and will be back.

2019-11-06I ordered the orange chicken and fried rice to go it was fresh, hot and delicious. Customer service was polite and efficient. My first time ordering from here I will be back. Now Im adding to my first review of this restaurant different from prior experience with them. The nerve to take my hard earned money and give me oily, soggy, overcooked leftovers. My egg roll was placed in the orange chicken sauce I guess to hide the fact that you gave me less chicken? Broccoli overcooked, and rice lukewarm and tasted smoky. This is not the experience I had in the past. Did the previous cook quit? Please treat ALL customers the same. When I entered your restaurant you acted as if I was a criminal only one of you were nice as she always is. Im a law abiding citizen. Never judge a book by its cover. I have worked in retail for 25 yrs. I treat ALL customers with dignity and respect.

2021-04-22If you enjoy spicy food, I highly recommend the Xinjiang style spicy chicken and spicy shrimp in hot pot. Yum.The portions are more than generous. I ordered 4 dishes and they can easily feed 8 adults. This is not the typical Americanized Chinese restaurant. People recognize that and celebrate the uniqueness. That’s something I love about Ann Arbor.

2021-10-01Vegetarians or vegans stay clear. They dont know and dont care about meat broth in their sauces (typical for a lot of recipes); seems to be a dont ask, dont tell policy for that.EDIT: There you have it, straight from the owner. Small businesses cant cater to everyone so there are other options if you dont wanna eat animals in Ann Arbor. Im sure the menu is lovely if you dont care about that.
