Just found this little place last week. Very cozy, great views of the canal and fantastic coffee. Lots of vegan things on the menu, very excited to visit again! Parking lot is tiny but there is more available parking down the street. Dont let a full lot stop you from trying them out!
An overall amazing place! The flowers outside are beautiful, and the aesthetic inside is cute and fun. The food was very delicious, and there were a lot of vegetarian options. The coffee was so good, and I was kind of sad to drink my latte and ruin the foam. The service was great and every person working there seemed upbeat and happy. If you are visiting or driving through Benton Harbor/ St. Josephs, I totally recommend!
Ive been to Cliffords a few times. I thought the food was pretty lackluster, or that I couldve done better at home. The coffee was all right. Youre really paying a premium price for the ambiance. If youre looking to eat, therere more tasty options in the area for cheaper.
Found this gem of a restaurant while on a quick vacation. Food was delicious, my husband loved his coffee and my chai was the best Ive had. Lots of outdoor seating, which was important to us-great atmosphere and beautiful plants all around the deck. If we are ever in the area again, we will absolutely be back!
Cliffords is a wow experience for food/coffee lovers and plant lovers. The canal patio and rooftop patios are gorgeous and surrounded by plants making you feel very cozy. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is great and uplifting. Our food was delicious along with the matcha mama smoothie. Highly recommend this beautiful little place!
Today we had breakfast at Cliffords Coffee Canal. We always pass it and say we need to go there so today we did. If theres somewhere that youve been meaning to go just do it. Cliffords is a great old building with lots of plants and its right on a canal. Theres very limited parking so one thing that you should know is that there is overflow parking two buildings down at the corner. You go in, you order your food and pay for it and then they will bring it to you. The upper deck looks really pretty from the street and its nice but for the best seats go straight out the patio doors on to the lowest deck. That patio is right on the water and there are swans and geese swimming around looking picturesque. The food is a combination of healthy and interesting. I am going to warn you that this is not some cheap dive. Youre going to pay for that fabulous food and that beautiful view. Overall I would still say this is a win. Great food, great view, good service. Just a little on the pricey side.
When I need to step outside my busy life and share a special moment with a dear friend, I find refuge along the canal. You find peace of mind amid lush greenery, delightful smells, and tasty gourmet food offerings. Brick walls and rich wooden architectural elements create a cozy atmosphere that begs you to linger. Top it off with friendly and helpful customer treatment. Do yourself a favor and visit today!
Perfect ambiance, indoor/outdoor seating. Sit outside among the flowers, birds and water. Coffee is amazing! The staff was polite and lovely. We had breakfast with homemade peach jam! If you are in Benton Harbor you must stop here for coffee, at the minimum. They make smoothies as well. Muffins taste homemade. Go and enjoy your surreal surroundings.
Couldnt be more pretentious if they tried. Fairly expensive for a mediocre quality, small - medium portion size. I ordered a large cold brew coffee and the prosciutto open faced sandwich. The woman taking my order at the counter was barely paying attention to me as I told her what I wanted which ended up in me getting the wrong order. My time talking to her felt very short and rushed even though they were not busy. Upon finding a table on their patio, I realized that the entire section was overcrowded with potted plants (as they sell them upon request). With the very limited space between tables even the serving staff had difficulties navigating around parties of 3 or more, very poor design choice. Once the food came out and our server had managed to get to the table, I realized that I received the wrong sandwich. I mentioned something to the server and she proceeded with a line of dialogue that made it seem like it was my fault and that she wasnt going to do anything about it. Since I work in the service industry I accepted the incorrect sandwich and didnt cause a problem, even though I had already paid and tipped prior to sitting down. For $12 I got one English muffin (I believe) cut in half and topped with avocado, tomato and chorizo. Not awful but for a sit-down restaurant I expected a bigger portion than what I received. I washed it down with my cold brew, which was weak and almost bland. I drink it black so I was expecting a robust flavor, especially from a self proclaimed coffee house; Biggby has better cold brew than Cliffords Coffee Canal. Overall the vibe I got from the staff was apathetic and borderline elitist, as if my experience at their establishment was meaningless. I dont live in St. Joe but if I ever retuen I wont be going back to Cliffords Coffee Canal and I would discourage others from going. Youll get a better experience at an inner-city McDonalds at 2am
I am not joking when I say I DREAM about this place. The food is absolutely incredible and sitting outside in the early morning was so relaxing. I went back in 2 separate times during my visit to try more items. The muffins and the smoothies were my favorite part. The ladies working the counter were very patient and helpful with my group as we ordered. This is definitely a hidden gem in St. Joe and I cant wait to return some day!
I really enjoyed this place. The staff was friendly, and the food and the coffee were great. It is cafe style where you order your food and drink then they bring it out to you. We were able to snag a table outside on their patio, which, provided a great atmosphere with great views. The parking lot is very small but there is overflow parking on the corner you just have to keep an eye out for it.
Great atmosphere if you are lucky to sit outside. A bit overpriced for a family breakfast morning. We did get lucky to have parking right by door. The line was long to order food (15 min standing with kids in a narrow entryway) we came at 1030 on a Sunday so almost past busy hours and felt like they needed more help as the girls couldn’t keep up between delivery, cleanup, and restocking.Overall would recommend if you appreciate the ambiance the place delivers with the beautiful views and flowers surrounding you.
Lived in this area for about 6 months and this was my favorite place for breakfast. A little more expensive but the quality of food and the atmosphere are UNMATCHED. Located right on the water, absolutely must see in the summer (especially if you like flowers). Highly recommend.
Id like to start out by saying I honestly think this is my second favorite breakfast spot in the area. In my honest opinion it makes The Mason Jar look overrated. The food is awesome. The customer service is great and its not over priced unlike its nearby competition. The one draw back is the parking situation. They have a small lot and you have to walk a little bit but not a deal breaker. My girlfriend and I came upon this place last year and couldnt be happier.
This place is SO good. Charming, good menu selection, delicious coffee, and friendly and sincere staff. They have waterfront seating and a third floor balcony (which I highly recommend), where you can sip underneath umbrellas while surrounded by lush plants and the sounds of the marina.
This may be the best coffee shop in the area. They have great food, smoothies, and coffee. Their cold brew coffee is excellent, which is hard to find in the around here. The atmosphere is also fantastic. Rustic, with live plants everywhere. Free wifi for customers. Both indoor seating and an outdoor patio, right on the water. There is also a sweet dog that greets you and loves to be pet!
This place is so cool! Went up for a day of kayaking, and this popped up. Definitely stands out. A really good HEALTHY smoothie. You can sit inside with some fantastic decor, outside on the deck by the water, or all the way up on the third floor roof! You might get dizzy climbing the stairs round and round, so consider the elevator... ;)
Exceptional staff/service! Inviting atmosphere and comfortable seating, especially outside on the patio overlookong the canal. The menu had several healthy options without lacking taste or flavor, we ordered several items and shared. My chai latte was the best I have had and we cannot wait to return!
Absolutely love this place - it is pefect for a quick break or a brunch on a Saturday or Sunday morning! This place has a wonderful patio in the back as well as on the 3rd floor which both provide a view of the river. They serve great coffee and homemade breakfast food. If you are part of Whirlpool organization, be sure to mention it to the cashier for a 15% discount!
Cliffords Coffee Canal is Benton Harbors best kept secret! Specializing in single-origin roasts, the owners are true coffee aficionados. The fresh juice and smoothie bar offer 100% fresh fruit and vegetable options- no jugs of concentrate or mixes are ever used. Full breakfast and lunch menu that are available all day, with fresh and unique items with specials on a regular basis. Healthy plants for sale too, a coffee and plant lovers destination no doubt! Waterfront seating, paddle up and dock from the canal side, rooftop dining as well. Super unique atmosphere. Exceptional coffee. Awesome food.
Great location on the canal, and theyve done a wonderful job with the atmosphere, including a beautiful garden on the deck adjacent to the canal.Coffee is quality and a reasonable price. Food is quite good but very expensive, which is the only reason its 4 stars instead of 5.
I am shocked that coffee canal gets 5 star reviews. This place is awful. We ordered cliffs amazing omelette and the breakfast tacos - the food was so pitiful and meager. We also ordered the 12 ounce mochas that were brought to us in 6 ounce mugs.Sorry, but for $36 the breakfast and coffee should be much better. Very, very pathetic and disappointing. On the positive side, there was very nice gardening and decor.Do yourself a huge favor and go to the mason jar cafe down the street. It is fantastic.
Gorgeous place where the design was funky and eclectic. We got the fresh juices, smoothies (really banana heavy if you order one), and a strawberry muffin (texture was crumbly and more like a biscuit, but good). There is a roof top you can group to and overlook the river. Benton Harbor is up and coming and this place is a gem.
I cant believe I have yet to review one of my favorite spots!I remember riding my bike there the first time, being amazed at the attention to detail and attempt at zero waste. The plants are fantastic, make you feel like youre inside of a zen garden more so than a cafe. The food is always spot on, Ive never had it cooked poorly or any issues. I would say the prices are a little high, but quality makes it worth it to me. I do wish they would carry tofu so I could enjoy the peaceful vibes instead of having the chaos of the mason jar.. but I digress.Smoothies, juices, espresso drinks. All apot on.I love the punch card system. Keeps the locals coming back.Overall, it is a must go. Ive introduced so many friends to this gem. I enjoy getting work done, chatting or just reading a book.Hopefully someday theyll be 7 days a week. Maybe even longer days. Or a longer season. Life in southwest Michigan. It is a wonderful addition while their doors are open, nonetheless.
This place has trendy decor and friendly staff. The drinks and food are delicious. Its the best chill/party spot in the area. My family rented out the dock by the water for my fathers 60th birthday. Cliffords catered it. It was a beautiful setting. Everyone loved the food and had a great time. I highly recommend this becoming your usual spot.
My husband and I were kayaking through the Paw Paw canal and the owners were on the back porch of their place, over the canal. The owners told us about their coffe shop and Im so glad they did! Cliffords is a hidden gem and I highly recommend breakfast or brunch! The food is fresh and delicious! You will not want to miss this one! The owners are wonderful and take great pride in their beautiful place! There is roof top sitting or relax on the deck over the canal!
This place is amazing! I tried a ginger shot and turmeric shot with ginger (made by Mary) yesterday and it was absolutely amazing! I went back today and tried a strawberry-banana smoothie and it was fantastic! If you are looking for a wonderful intimate restaurant with a beautiful ambiance and friendly staff...THIS IS THE PLACE!
Cliffords is a unique and beautiful little breakfast/brunch/lunch place with a small but delicious menu of Smoothies, coffees, baked goods, breakfast options and sandwiches. I live their Healthy Haven and Key Lime Smoothies. Great Quiche! And my favorite thing is the Foraged Mushroom Soup that I had there the other day!
Fresh juice, dependable espresso, and delicious brunch- three of my favorite things. So far Ive tried the croissant breakfast sandwich (delicious -add the egg), ginger shot, and I tried a bite of my friends fish taco as well as the barbacoa taco. Great decor and the location has a lot of potential being on the paw paw river. Ill be back.
Finally convince the husband to venture over to Cliffards Coffee Canal on Wednesday March 27th. My husband ordered a vanilla latte and the canal classic sandwich ($6.75). I ordered a raspberry muffin ($4) and the gobbler sandwich minus tomatoes ($12).I will admit some of the prices are a bit steep while others seem more spot on but it doesnt stop me from treating myself to something amazing every once and awhile. This eclectic spot gives off an artsy and hipster vibe. While I tend to not be fond of hipsters, I can appreciate a business who knows what people to cater too.The drinks are marvelous, my favorite being the chai tea. I love their fresh fruit and all their homeade treats. My husband is a picky eater yet he was willing to eat here which was an exciting moment for me. That muffin was life giving. I felt my winter depression shed and soul thawed out from the 0° wind chill because of their fantasic raspberry muffin. My first visit I made the mistake of ordering the waffle because while tasty was no where near as magnificent as their muffins. Next time I come I will most likely contnue to change up my entree order to see what my favorite item on the menu is but I will never skip a muffin again.Biggest downside is there isnt a whole lot of parking. It is difficult to find a spot and its even more difficult getting out of the parking lot. That really is the biggest downside of the entire place. Everything else is fantastic and will bring me back for years to come.
Wonderful coffee shop/cafe with a touch of plant store thrown in. Beautiful old brick building with high ceilings, looking out on the old canal. Decor is a mix of plant, vaguely nautical antiques, carved wood pieces, and other miscellaney. Fifteenish tables (mostly 2-tops) and a small bar (covered with knickknacks at the moment) inside. Another 20ish tables on patio outside on the canal. Several outlets. Instrumental jazz at low volume. Free wifi with posted password. Friendly and cute young barista / waitresses. Order at the bar, and items are brought to your table. Small selection of high quality bagged tea. Small selection of so-so pastries. Substantial menu of high quality breakfast and lunch things, juices, and smoothies. There were a half dozen locals in here in early afternoon on a cool mid-May Sunday. I suspect this place is jammed with tourists during the high season.
They are unable to handle the customer flow for orders. Would benefit heavily by analyzing their process. Waiting half an hour to order a plain coffee seems nuts. Muffins in the pan also appear to be left on the table and forgotten for over 1 hour.Analysis, and Regroup.

2021-08-19The staff are all very nice. The flowers and plants on the roof and patio are all beautifully tended. The seating is comfortable, and the view next to the river is lovely. The food is a little over priced for me but it was delicious, as was the coffee.

2021-10-16The greenery if the space is really unique. You dont feel like youre in Michigan when eating in the back patio on the Canal. Food was as good as the atmosphere. I would recommend it for brunch.

2021-06-03The Coffee Canal is a hidden treasure to the area. Youll want to note that if youre parking, youll probably need to park in the overflow by the roundabout. We had a hot and an iced mocha, both great coffee. The fresh baked blueberry muffin was perfect. The views and atmosphere are splendid, you could sit here for hours sipping on coffee and and chatting or reading.

2022-06-20What an unexpected gem. I popped in out of curiosity having seen their beautiful garden patio from the other side of the canal. What a wonderful surprise to find not only a local coffee house, but an amazing smoothie place as well. Their kitchen is currently closed with hopes it will be back up and running soon. So, I am super picky about smoothies, as I am trying to eat healthy these days. I typically make my own at home without added sugar or sweateners. Let me say, they use fresh ingredients so the fruit has its own natural sugars to make their smoothie just sweet enough to be a treat and good fuel for the rest of my afternoon. Im hoping for another beach day, so we can stop by before 1 p.m. as they close at 2 p.m.

2022-07-01The plants, flowers & decor are absolutely beautiful 🌸! The smoothies 🍹 are the best I’ve ever had (that includes the Chicagoland area). The staff is also delightful. My trips aren’t complete without a visit! I just wish they had more working hours/days available!
