The Common Grill in Chelsea came highly recommended from a Doctor my wife works for. Knowing his taste in fine dinning experiences we made reservations and made the hour drive from Lansing. Our expectations were not only met they were exceeded! We arrived on time and our table was ready after a short 3 minute wait. Kristen was our server and we couldnt have been more pleased. Kristen was professional, friendly & well versed with giving us recommendations from the on line menu (COVID thing.) Blue point oysters on the half shell were amazing served with horseradish, cocktail sauce & another (light ginger?) sauce. I ordered a whole main lobster & tenderloin on the side. Kristen informed us the lobsters are delivered to the restaurant and kept alive on site until cooked/boiled. The best part of the deal, Kristen de-shelled the lobster at our table. How cool is that!? Desert was fantastic with tasteful presentation. Warm towel lemon hand wash post our main entree was also much appreciated. Kristen even hooked us up with fresh coffee in a togo cup for our drive back home. The verdict... 5 star++! well certainly make the drive again in the near future. Thank you Kristen & all the staff for a fabulous experience!
Common Grill never disappoints! Food is always fresh and tasty! Expect a wait on Friday or Saturday nights but it is worth the wait! Everything is always delicious but the family loves the rolls and fresh fish. If you are in the area STOP and eat!!!! You will be glad you did.
Off the hook!We took the short drive over here from Ann Arbor after hitting a couple of closed restaurants closed due toC-19.Weve always had good memories of the Common Grill thanks to extraordinary chef and a five-star server named Tom.The only thing missing today was Tom yet Sara A.Was ourExtraordinaryExceptionalWonderfulServerWe ordered two or three items that we were going to share. And Sarah had the kitchen chefs and exportersDivide everything in the kitchen. Her pace was excellent as everything arrived in a 4 course style setting. Those #RollsThe Louisiana wild shrimpThe huge fish tacosThe three onion soup with provoloneAnd the pear salad with bibb lettuce.5 stars is not enough.10 stars for Sara A.10 for the young kitchen staffAllGlovedMaskedHatsW/enthusiasm.Also kudos to the3 floor managersHostessPlus the managers/hostessMonitered - Helped - AssistThe seamless kitchen delivery.Truly the highlight of this fall weekend was our experience at the Common Grill.
OUTSTANDING experience! I don’t know where to begin with. We made a slight detour for a quick dinner on the way. The place has a lovely vibe. The server was super cordial, and explained the menu and made it sound like everything here is great, turns out, EVERYTHING was outstanding. Right from the serving of freshly baked bread , the Saad they served with each entree , the main coarse dishes and last but not the least, the desserts. One of the best side salads , best crembrulé, super tender juicy fried chicken, fresh scallops.I’m going to drive 2 hours just to eat here some weekend.
I have been returning to the common grill for over ten years, they have maintained the same level of high quality food and service the whole time. Everything on the menu is delicious!! Love love love the bread, and their side salad with pears and Gorgonzola is one of the best salads Ive had. The pork belly is my absolute favorite and all the seafood/ pasta entrees are a must! Every server Ive encounters has been incredibly friendly and considerate.
Have always been curious about this restaurant given the reviews Ive read about the quality of the cuisine, so knew it was highly rated & equally expensive. Server was attentive as was the pace of the meal. Ordered the Walleye, which was fresh & flaky. Came with sauteed spinach & wild rice that were tasty, but portions were modest. No lemon wedge with the fish? Served small rolls (2 / person). Honestly, fine dining may equate to deliciously prepared food & great service, but given the prices, all of us were disapointed with this dining experience. Went home hungry!
On 1-15–22 we dined in at the Common Grill for my birthday, not only was my $38 Salmon Horrible , the dark haired older waitress was horrible. It wasn’t even that busy. She basically tossed our Shrimp Cocktail on our table as she was walking by quickly, I ordered a Pina Colada that had “LIME” in it😝. I swear it tasted like Gin… I’ve never had a Pina Colada that had such a strong lime taste… And the manager had the nerve to make it like I was wrong…. My 1st experience at the Common Grill was good… But this time was so bad that I will NEVER go back. I’m glad it was a gift card we used instead of our own money. I’ve had a better meal and service at a Truck stop!! It totally ruined my birthday. The owner may want to get a more Experienced Manager, his response was very Dismissive, and that alone passed me off where I’d never go back. Definitely Over Rated.
What’s not to love about the Common Grill?!? The staff is very professional and friendly, and the food is always amazing! I feel fortunate that they are right here in my small town, five minutes from home. The only one low point would be that the acoustics in the room are very loud, so if you’re looking for a quiet intimate dinner, this is not the place. In my opinion, the amazing food makes up for that fact.
Possibly one of the top ten meals I’ve ever had. The whitefish was superb, hot, cooked to perfection, and full of flavor. The bread was a wonderful surprise. The fries with the steak were hot, crisp and seasoned perfectly. The host and hostess were attentive and came outside to look for us on a busy Saturday evening. Connie, our bartender/server was pleasant with knowledgeable recommendations. Will definitely be going back soon.
Absolutely a must visit restaurant. Wife and I had been twice before after a Purple Rose Theatre show. This time, I needed to put miles on a new truck before I could tow a vehicle and we selected to drive to Chelsea an hour to have dinner at the Common Grill. It was wonderful. Had the lobster ravioli. Our service Justin was great. Well worth the drive. On top of that, I left my credit card at the restaurant and they made arrangements to have it overnighted to me. Great customer service.
Great restaurant, and very good experience. Steak was overcooked, but they did replace it with a proper cooked steak. Appreciate the effort but its never fun eating at a different time than your significant other. All in all, will return and enjoy another evening out at the common grill.
Came highly recommended but i honestly do not see the appeal. Went here for a family meal and it ended up being about one in maybe three times in my life I’ve sent food back. I ordered a salad and it was literally just lettuce, with large chunks of raw onion and radish. Husband’s food was sub-par for the price and especially the reputation of the place. No intentions of ever returning.
Our server was delightful. Brought out everything at a great pace and took perfect care of our table. Food was outstanding. I love a restaurant that has a casual and comfortable atmosphere while also serving 5-star food. My scallops were perfectly cleaned. Every dish on thr table was delicious. And dont miss out on their desserts. We will be back!
This is the quintessential nicest restaurant in town for Chelsea, catering to the wealthier folks who inhabit the town and those in the area who are after an upscale dinner. Ive never been particularly dissapointed by a meal at the Common Grill, though nor have I been really wowed by any facet of my experiences here. The surrounds, defined by traditional michigan brick with wood flooring and seating, are mostly standard for this sort of restaurant and yet thrown here and there are modern light fixtures, metal pipe decor, and a minimalist fresco on the wall, all of which to me clash with the rest of the interior to create a somewhat confusing ambiance. Mostly due to the brick walls, it is *LOUD* in the Common Grill on a busy night, making conversation and relaxation somewhat difficult, especially if one or more patrons are unable to keep from yelling as seems more often than not to be the case. The food here is decidedly overpriced as while the ingredients are clearly fresh the dishes themselves are somewhat unremarkable for their price point, there is certainly a luxury tax that likely stems from a number of different sources. The portion sizes for dishes like the the Goat Cheese Ravioli and Steak Frites leaves a little more free stomach room that Id like, leaving other parts of the meal to fill the gaps. The bread that comes with the meals that seems to me to be an herbed pizza dough is quite tasty, and the desserts are usually decidedly worth the price.Prices for liqour are fairly standard for this type of venue, with a decent wine selection and a dissapointingly thin beer menu. Im always a bit upset when places like this dont give some indication as to exactly how well-stocked their bar is, as playing charades with the waitstaff to figure out which cocktails they can and cannot make me is more than a little tiring. I think its lucrative for a restaurant that boasts a full bar to list common cocktails they have the ingredients on hand for rather than exclusively providing a shortlist of house drinks. I also think if youre charging over $12 for a mixed drink that its worth investing in ice molds and a citrus peeler, getting an expensive drink filled with ice-maker chips and a big wad of citrus pith is a little underwhelming. All in all, the Common Grill is an acceptable restaurant for a date or event and the food is good enough to drive home full and happy, though if I were after a really high-end meal or a quiet dinner this place will almost certainly not provide you either.
Common Grill is worth every penny and if youre lucky youll get Alex as your server. Not only was he extremely helpful with the menu items, but he was very friendly and everything youd want in a server your first time going to a new restaurant. Id highly recommend this place and the phenomenal food.
Nice setting with very helpful staff. Drinks and beers very good. Unfortunately the food was, well, it was bland. Steak medallions dish was very well presented but the carrots were not close to cooked, mashed potatoes were without any of the flair the menu promised and were paste consistency. Meat was served as if just taken from package to pan to plate with nothing added. With top prices and classy atmosphere the food really should deliver. Instead they mailed it in.
Not terrible, but everything was just a little bit off. I ordered the tenderloin medallions - one was pretty rare and sinewy, the other grey but better (ordered medium rare). The carrots were standard - tasted like a fresh, raw carrot. Potatoes were good. The calamari had good flavour, but greasy. Its fried, so you cant be too critical, but there was standing grease in the bottom - made for some that were suspect/ended up in the bin. My wife was not crazy about her meal - she left a good amount on the plate. The dessert, again, was just a little too rich. We may have just ordered all of the wrong things or caught them on a bad day.
So happy you are back open. Food is amazing as always but especially the addition of the old vegetable sandwich on the grilled flatbread. And the appetizer flatbread pizza. For a person that does not eat meat or seafood. Both of these are super satisfying and delicious
I have been going to the Common Grill for well over a decade but the last two meals were just ok. Im not going to return until the fish menu returns. We were there on 6/13/21 and the cook in the back was barking out orders that could clearly be heard at the front door. Hopefully they can get back on track in the near future.
I admire this restaurant! They prepare great meals, they have a nice menu, The cook in that spot is an expert, I enjoy very much trying all their dishes. The food is consistently tasty, the attitude towards the visitors is friendly. I frequently visit this restaurant and I was never disappointed. I highly recommend it.
Used to love this place, they have gluten free pasta which is great for my family, but the options for kiddos is super limited. They used to have a great chicken, veggie pasta dish my kids loved that was better than their kids menu noodles and butter. But they dont do that anymore I guess. Its pretty pricey for what you get. The people are always pleasant and a cute atmosphere but would love to see better and more affordable options for those kids with food restrictions that do happen to come in. 🤷
Have not been disappointed yet! Weve enjoyed both dinner and lunch meals here and been very happy. Service is always good and the food comes out quickly for how busy they can get. I loved the grilled veggie sandwich for lunch! Its a great place for a date night, for sure. I have not yet brought my kid here so I cant speak to the experience for children. Well be back!
First time customer. My sister and I were looking for a place to have some lunch in the area. I would say a really good place if you like seafood, as they had a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, and sandwiches features some type of seafood. I tried the lobster roll and found it very good, along with the house pear salad. My sister who is not a fan of seafood had their hamburger which for the price very quiet big and according to her was very good. The place is moderately pricey at her burger was $14 and my lobster roll $24.
Loved it. Clean open dining room where you dont feel like youre sitting on top of one another. We wanted to try everything so we settled on three appetizers, mushroom fries, whitefish dip and lobster spring rolls. Loved them all. Wait staff was awesome as well. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from Ann Arbor.
From the decor, to the food. Everything was amazing. Shrimp cocktail was incredible. Three different type of oysters. Parmesan crusted whitefish was to die for. Grilled beef tenderloin medallions were cooked to perfection. Lets not forget the fantastic bread. We will return!!!!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗
Atmosphere was fantastic, very clean with good space between tables. My server named Alex was on top of everything and couldnt have done a better job. I order the Medallions and they were out of this world. My steak was cooked perfectly, pair that with an ideal Red Wine steak sauce and well cooked mushrooms & you have a perfect meal. This restaurant has their flavors mastered and is 2nd to none in the area for overall experience!
Spectacular. You never know what you’re in for when you Google from the freeway for a dinner stop. This place is a 10! Fantastic wine list. Extensive menu including seafood, pasta, salad, sandwiches, and dessert. All homemade, y’all. You will not be disappointed in stopping here if what you’re looking for is great food, a nice, relaxed atmosphere, and friendly staff and patrons alike. It’s one giant room, loud and boisterous with conversation and laughter. Great service. Fast seating and service. We walked in at 7:30 on a Friday night. Scored two seats at the bar and if we hadn’t ordered dessert and conversed with our neighbors, we’d have been walking out of there at 8:45. We will definitely go back!
When we lived out of town, wed come to the Common Grill for very special occasions, and were never disappointed. Now that we live within a mile of the restaurant, we get the chance to go more frequently, for lunch, spontaneous nights out, and special occasions. Again, we have never been disappointed. The menu changes frequently enough to keep things interesting, while still keeping old favorites too. Every item from the bread to the desserts and everything in between is flavorful, cooked perfectly, and a just-right portion sizes. Highly recommended.
Is this the way you treat one of the best restaurants in town? Not allowing an outdoor space to serve its long awaited customers that have supported this well established quality and customer focused eatery and the retail spaces around it? No! Grant this place a variance to serve those in the community and those who travel to it. This place rocks!
We enjoyed an early Saturday dinner and got a nice table. (But when we left it was crowded with folks waiting) Appetizers were wonderful including fish pate with savory homemade crackers. Highly suggest the gazpacho on a warm day. Try the parmesan encrusted whitefish - delicious. All fresh and flavorful ingredients. Good beer selection. Our waitress Kristen was awesome! We hope to return when next in the area.
This is probably my favorite restaurant. The food is unique and always delicious, the drink selection is fabulous, and the desserts are second to none! Hint: even if you think you dont like bread pudding, try theirs -- the Warm Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. It is delectable and beyond compare!Prices match the upscale quality of the food but the setting is comfortable, busy, and generally casual. The place is a gem!
First visit... Excellent food & service. Decor/atmosphere is neat, but there is very limited room to wait inside and some of the seating is too close to the front door. Well be back, but well call ahead and wait in the car until we are close to our seating slot. Our server, Kim, was fantastic! Thanks for a great birthday dinner!
Usually would rate 4or5 with low end being that it is a little more pricy than most comparable restaurants. However, this last time I would have rated barely a 3!!!! The salad had too much dressing, blue cheese and even maybe nuts. My scallops arrived very fishy smelling making it unpleasant even for my dinner partner. This size scallops aren’t the best for the upscale restaurant you try to be. The risotto was salty. This was mid afternoon on a Sunday which may have a different chef. Last time I had the whitefish it wasn’t up to par either being very thin and mushy. My husband’s lobster pasta remained very good. Hoping our experiences were just a fluke.
I was very pleased with my dining experience tonight at Common Grill. The food is presented beautifully, with colors to catch the eye, and textures and tastes that delight the tastebuds. Try the steak entree, or my favorite when available/in season: lump crab cakes. If you are looking for appetizers, you can’t go wrong with the portabella fries. Service is exceptional here — Kristi took good care of our party of three.
The Common Grill is a staple in Chelsea. It is a commonplace for myself , friends and family. The food is spectacular, leaning more toward the seafood realm. Cocktails are very good as well. Very best to the chefs and staff who can put out such big city flavor in a small town.
Delicious, very rich food (the rolls taste like butter from heaven) and elegant, friendly service. They have a great assortment of beers and liquors, and they make an effort to buy local. I also love the French onion soup and the many seafood dishes. The location is great- it is right on downtown Chelseas charming Main Street, a block away from the Purple Rose Theater.
Casual atmosphere with upscale food. Prices are relatively high for the area but the quality is absolutely worth the price. The menu leans toward seafood, but there is something for everyone including vegetarians. Truly fresh oysters. If you enjoy an old fashioned, try theirs.
Love this place. But pricey. And I wish hed bring back his old signature salad. Ill pay extra for dried cherry and pine nuts. The mixed grill is my favorite. Bacon wrapped shrimp, chicken and pears or apples. Steak.Gotta try steak salad. The corn bread croutons could be their own meal. And the burger for lunch, best burger, tasted like ground steak.
Food was very good. I went in with the wife thinking gonna have to get a taco or 2 on the way back to the hotel. Boy was I wrong the serving size was just right & Im a big guy. Have dessert or you will regret it if you dont. I forget what my dessert was but it was amazing, see pic.
Wonderful experience. We had a bridal shower in their private dining room. Everything was wonderful, organized (by their wonderful staff especially Cristy and Sarah) and delicious. This is my second event here and I could not have been happier with food and service. Have also had several meals in the regular dining room, and it is always a bright spot in my day. The gluten free items make this easier than ever to love. Thank you!!!
Common Grill has always been a good choice. The menu offers enough to meet a variety of appetites while affording the kitchen the ability to produce unique, finely finished plates. Their service leaves other restaurants behind as well. There were no less than three different people attending my table on the last visit. I will tell you, the menu is a bit more expensive than most sites allude you to believe. That’s fine though because you get what you pay for.
Upscale food in a comfortable setting with friendly, attentive service that manages to never look hurried. My waiter drifted by & almost on his heels a kitchen staff member in a chef coat delivered my lunch (the pickerel special) to my table, smoking hot. (read: it wasnt getting cold waiting for the waiter to get back to pick it up) The plate was perfect: beautiful, delicious & did I mention smoking hot? Common Grill is a very professional outfit making for a consistently great experience.
This place is fantastic. Everything is made in house from salad dressings to the creams and sauces. Fresh, never frozen food. Specials always changing. Staff very friendly. This restaurant is on the expensive side, but never once disappointing. I highly recommend the (dinner portion) Goat Cheese Ravioli
Going through serious withdrawal from our fave restaurant, The Common Grill! The service, the fare and the ambiance is simply the BEST!!! If you are perusing the reviews and have never been to The Common Grill, put visiting at the top of your “where to dine” list!!! The town of Chelsea is filled with awesome stores, too!
The name is quaint because the Common Grill is uncommonly good. Ive never eaten anything here that wasnt excellent, actually. Its one of those restaurants that gives you taste experiences, not just food. Just so you know, it is expensive. My wife and i can spend over $100 on dinner without trying,so we dont go often, but its worth it every time. Highly recommended!
Exceptional service from Skylar(?), first of all. I had the walleye, which was perfect, and my date had a chicken and shrimp salad that exceeded his expectations. Oysters are not my thing, but theyre a big thing here, with several varieties available. Extensive beer and wine lists, and craft cocktails are available at fair prices. The dinner menu was varied and interesting, with pasta, beef, fish, and seafood choices, among other things. Kind of loud and bustly for intimate conversation, but its still got a warm atmosphere. Definitely recommend.
The food is consistently above average. The wait staff is mostly friendly and energetic. We have been going for several years and the food is as good when they started. The rooms need more sound deadening when it is busy.Common Grill is worth the drive from Ann Arbor or even Detroit if they took reservations (but to this date they still only take call ahead for less than 6 people). BUT ALAS, I still go there because the food is so good.
Went there for a Friday noon lunch. No wait, got seated right away. Nice atmosphere. Ordered lunch promptly which included a house salad. Unfortunately my salad had a BUG in it which I understand can happen. I waved the waitress down and she immediately took my salad away. I watched her go straight to the manager, Michael, and show him the salad. He brought me a new salad, said that was weird and then asked if I wanted pepper on my salad...no apology, no offer for compensation or other explanation except that was weird. Food is average and overpriced in my opinion. Would not recommend this restaurant.
Used to eat here all the time back in the Dayrl days, thought Id take my wife for her birthday, I ordered the Ny stip med, it came out rare but it didnt matter because it was a a mess of gristle couldnt eat it, the waiter never came back to ask how the food was and he was training a young lady, I was never a waiter but as a business owner for 22 yrs I know the 1st thing a real steak house does when a stake is served is ask the customer to cut in and make sure its cooked rt, anyway like I said it didnt matter because it was literally garbage, I told the waiter when he finally showed up and he took it away, took our dessert order never apologizedOr asked if Id like something else, so to say the least I was very disappointed.
Food always great and fresh. They dont take reservations but you can call ahead and be put on the list. Common is the owners last name. Was happy to see a nice pasta selection back on the menu at last visit. Limited choices for those who are allergic to shellfish. That said, great fresh fish and seafood. Other signature dishes.
Love this place! Have been going for decades and its always good. Great place to go for fresh fish year round. Have never been disappointed in the food or prep. The only downsides and theyre slight, are that it can get rather noisy and they dont take reservations for less then six.
We love this place!! Whenever my fiancee and I are in the area, we stop by here for the food and atmosphere. I believe the managers name is Scott. He is always friendly, helpful and genuinely happy.Side note we live in Oak Ridge, TN and travel to Michigan for business. Chelsea is a very warm and inviting place to visit.
Really good food and service. Excellent seafood selection with a lot of rotation based on whats available. I could eat about 3 baskets of their delicious bread. My only complaint is that its a bit loud when crowded and it can be hard to hold a comfortable conversation.
Ideal stop before Purple Rose Theater. Busy bistro atmosphere with friendly service. Fantastic kitchen responds beautifully to local fresh w/ great standard menu. Server knowledgable but not intrusive timed service w/o rush but w/ curtain in mind. Wine menu not exhaustive but matched to upscale food @ good price. A little noisy with bar + tables in one room. Well worth a drive.
Craig Common had a great idea when he opened The Common Grill in Chelsea. Great location, great food, excellent service, ambiance over the top. You cant go wrong if you love fresh fish prepared in an uncommon manner. An elegant place for lunch, dinner or brunch on Sunday.
Id love to give five stars, great service, cool place, however I always try a burger when I first try a higher end restaurant. I ordered my burger medium and it came border line well done. To be fair Ill mention that I didnt return it, I suspect they wouldve remade in request.
A flat out wow. Knowledgeable and friendly waitpersons, great food selections, well made cocktails, lots of beer choices, and a good wine selection. Did I mention the desserts? Off season for the key line pie, but the bread pudding with chocolate and croissants is decadent. There were other choices, but how many desserts can one consume. The entree choices range from healthy to carnivorously delicious. Salads, fish and even something for non meat lovers. And the bread! The fresh bread aroma permeates the restaurant.
Good food, great service, close to the Purple Rose Theatre. I will say one time when I came with my 58-year-old mother-in-law, they carded her, she had left her purse in the car, and they wouldnt serve her booze. Listen, I know rules is rules, but come on. Her 29 and 22 year old daughters were with her. I think shes of age.
Boyfriend ordered lobster and I had the pan walleye. The bread and salads were very good, but during the lobster presentation, the server dropped a third of it on the floor. He said he would bring more but didnt. The walleye stank up the entire table, extremely old fish- I didnt touch it. Ive had other dishes here Ive really enjoyed but this experience was pretty bad.
The food tasted just fine. The chef had no idea of what medium steak means versus rare or well-done means versus rare. Very disappointed in that part of our meal. The restaurant offered some kind of comp on the bill and did not deliver it. In other words this was not the high point of my evening.
From the rolls to the ravioli, I loved everything about this place. I just had the best meal Ive had in a long time at a restaurant. The rolls were enough to go back for. The all meat chowder was incredible. The lobster ravioli was the sweetest lobster meat I have ever had.
Good food but high prices. Its no surprise what you pay, but the food isnt so amazing that I think I totally want to go there again! The menu also seems to lack direction. Is it a seafood place? A trendy southern place? Fancy American? Its just tough to say, and it leaves you thumbing through the menu feeling unsure about what theyre really good at.
Flavorful food. This is a nice sit down restaurant. You cant order and eat quickly. The service is wonderful. Very kind and patient. I am there for holiday get-togethers, so we like to chat and take our time. But there atmosphere is relaxing. It is a large restaurant though, so it can be busy and loud.
My father, my husband and I came here for a dinner for the first time two days ago. I had heard good reviews of this place from a discerning coworker on multiple occasions. When we entered the restaurant at 6pm on a Wednesday evening, it was yet half empty. I approached the hostess desk, she wouldnt even lift her head to look at me in the eye- I can not think of a more perfect way to deter a first time client from becoming a regular.A male staff greeted us from behind and we were then seated at a high table immediately behind the front door. We assumed all the regular tables to the sides of the restaurants were booked ahead (an hour before arrival of most guests). At the very least we sat right next to a coat rack which allowed us direct access to our coats. The ambiance is nice and thoughtful, with good lighting. The noise level escalated quickly when guests started to fill up having the open kitchen in the back. Our waitress was friendly. she offered helpful suggestions off the menu. We shared the 1/2 dozen oysters, when asked how fresh they were, she was not able to tell us when the oysters arrived at the restaurant. We each had a tuscan pear/goat cheese/pine nuts salad to start- the candied pear is way too sweet, and should have been sliced & served in finer proportions. Introducing such a strong flavor early in the course of the dinner seriously curbs the appetite for the latter entree.Between the three of us, we shared 1) bouillabaisse, 2) bucatini 3) lump crab cakes. The bouillabaisse was fantastic, savory but not overwhelming. The only word I can conjure up for the bucatini however, is haphazard. The whole dish is so salty that you can no longer taste the delicate smoky flavor of the ham. I get that the chef wants to accentuate roasted garlic but there were at least two three chunks every single bite. The proportion of tomato sauce to the pasta was way off. When every single ingredient wants to stand out and scream, the dish will snap.We finished off our dinner with a vanilla bean cream brulee split three ways- which was a good call since it was gigantic. The night was redeemed.
Upscale restaurant in the heart of Chelsea. A good menu with daily specials and fresh seafood. My favorite thing here is the dessert menu. Their pastry chef is a genius who knows not to over-complicate the classics. The creme brulee is perfect. The bread pudding with chocolate bits is a little on the sweet side, but it is soooo good!Because of the brick walled interior, this place can get loud during dinner, which makes that intimate dinner conversation a little awkward. Still, it will impress your date.
This restaurant has been in downtown Chelsea for a long time. Nice atmosphere, great food. Healthy options. Lots of fish and seafood choices. Parking on street and in a lot behind the restaurant. Crowded at lunch and dinner so reservations helpful at those times. Casual or dress up.
The food here was quite good, recommended by someone who lived locally. Expect to pay around $25-$27 per plate. I ate the goat cheese ravioli and it was really good. Bread and salad that came with the meal were really good too. A bit pricey but I guess you really do get what you pay for and will definitely be coming back to try other entrees.p.s. My girlfriend had the salmon and said it was delicious as well.
We were really disappointed in this restaurant. We spent over $70 with tip, and no desserts or appetizers. I just had water, which is normal for me, but I prefer it with ice. The service was good, but the food didn’t bear up to reports.I was anticipating the bread which had been described by friends in glowing terms. It reminded me of something between an undercooked baguette and fry bread. I love both, but this was neither. We got seconds, thinking it was just an accident. No, it wasn’t.The pear and Gorgonzola salad was very good.My husband ordered the steak frites and I ordered the walleye. Both our main items were excellent. I love walleye, and it was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, the rice pilaf with it was blasé and the sautéed spinach reminded me too much of my mother’s. The steak was au point, but the frites were overpowered by the rosemary, and my husband had no comments for the vegetable melange.Overall, we felt it was a real letdown after how much people had raved about it and with such prices.
Great food. You might not think to order the burger becasue there is so much great food on the menue .......... but hands down best burger in Michigan. Shrimp cocktail is always perfect and their bread is worth the trip in itself. The acoustics is a tad noisy, but definitely worth going there
Cozy and comfortable space for dining. Had my nephew in a large stroller, had plenty of room. Waitstaff is happy to serve. Food arrived at appropriate time and temperature. Serving size generous amounts. As always the best garlic knots. Had gazpacho, it was dee-licious and fresh.
The best salad with dinner, the pink grapefruit martini is tops and this is the only time that Ive ever eaten fetticinni and felt great afterwards... it is beyond deelishus! The owner checked in with our group multiple times which tells me that he cares about service and satisfaction. The wait staff also asked us about our trip and provided prompt service.
Took my Mom to Sunday brunch for her birthday. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we were able to get a table. Our server (Jordan) was, at first very attentive, and patient with the fact that some in our party were arriving 15 or so minutes behind. We placed orders around 1:20pm or so (the point being that brunch runs until 3pm). It seemed that once our orders were placed, she was in a hurry to leave and be somewhere else, because we had a hard time finding her again-- and she clearly did not want to be waiting on us. (Working a double? Had somewhere to be? I dont know..... )I have been a server and manager of restaurants since I was 19, so I completely understand wanting to close your section at the end of brunch and go home (which would have been 3pm), but we had a good hour to go before that time...Food arrived promptly, at which time we discovered that a waffle was unusually soggy --Jordan was gone. Disappeared. We had to ask a server assistant to track down a manager to help us solve the waffle issue.Jordan reappeared and cleared our plates, at which time she dropped the check without asking if we wanted dessert or coffee (which we did want because we had already indicated that it was my moms birthday). We had to hand the check back to her, and order dessert, which was awkward (and she was clearly not happy about that delay). The whole service issue was a real disappointment -- especially because it was our Moms birthday, and we had convinced my mom to go to what is for her, a very fancy restaurant - and a treat. The lemon ricotta pancakes were a highlight. The bread basket is always good. The coffee is very good, and my mom enjoyed her tea.For a $90 breakfast, I would be hard pressed to go back and roll the dice on a server who clearly does not want to be there. As someone who works in the business, I always err on the side of the server, and almost never post reviews-- but this was such a miss.
We just had a most unsatisfactory experience. The food quality was OK. However, the salmon portion ($28) was miniscule and it was served with three woody stalks of asparagus and a tiny serving of potatoes on a huge plate -- which made the portions look even punier. We pointed this out to our server and she sent the host over. We restated our complaint and he actually disputed what we were saying telling us that they figured the salad as part of the portion -- who doesnt? The most frustrating thing was the condescending way he talked to us. When the check came, I asked the server who else I could explain my concerns to and she said Im not allowed to take complaints and said I should call. As I left, I pointed out to the host the manner in which had talked to us. He didnt apologize or otherwise demonstrate the least bit of interest in what I was saying. He simply said, I wouldnt do that and opened the door.Deplorable.This is not the service that has made the Common Grill famous. And it is certainly the sort service that, if experienced by a first-time patron, would at best discourage a second visit
My wife and I visited once before about five years ago and returned a week or so ago on our way through Michigan, and frankly it didnt live up to the great memories we had of the place. Cons: It was a show night at the Purple Rose and the place was packed and so loud we could barely hear each other. My wife had the scallops and I had the Paella - both were good, but nothing to write home about. I had a pear salad which was underwhelming - just nothing to it but some pears on a bed of lettuce. Pros: the bread was excellent, the tuna with seaweed was excellent. Well try it again next time were through, but just felt, given the price, our meal didnt cut it.
I think I reviewed this last year as well. We are visiting and all week Ive been debating coming here or trying some other 4.5 star restaurant ...there are so many to choose from...what I realized today, after eating my meal at Common Grill is how shocked I am that this restaurant has 4.5 stars and so do many others around here. There is no way that the food or service at this restaurant is the same as any local pub or Coney island, and that is a travesty. This restaurants rating should make it stand out from the rest instead of being lost among the sea of pubs and Coney islands. The Common Grill is fantastic and a gem in the rough among the small town eateries, pubs, and Coney Island. Dont get me wrong, I love conies...but the pecan crusted lake perch that is delicately dusted and perfectly pan fried is at a different level than boiling hot dogs. The seafood chowder is amazing with large chunks of perfectly cooked shrimp, fish, clams, etc.The hand made bread alone is worth the visit!
There is no better sure-thing for an outstanding meal in our area. Always provides a relaxed atmosphere with outstanding service and memorable food. Compares very favorably with the best food Ive eaten anywhere in the world. We are so lucky to have this cultural gem in our community.
This was the absolute worst tasting food Ive ever had. Everything was either under or overcooked. Hardly touched my plate, and had to pay $65 for eating two rolls because my entree was incredible. Bad service, only got greated for the food order, then for her to throw away my plate of gross food and take my money. Very disappointed.
Efficient service but was disappointed they didn’t have the quinoa salad they advertised on their website. I had the beef medalists which were cooked to perfection. The bread and desserts amazing. The tables for two are rather deep so difficult to converse with the person across from you. Very old atmospher so don’t plan on a intimate conversation. Very packed on a Saturday night after attending the play at the Purple Rose Theater. I would definely go again.
Id heard raves about The Common Grill, but wasnt impressed the one time I ate here. My appetizer of mussels seemed to be of uneven quality, and my entree was good but not as delicious as promised. Id try it again, but my first impression wasnt the best. The atmosphere is also a bit noisy for my tastes, though it does make the place seem lively.
Great service, but that was about it. The food is immensely overpriced for what they offered. The various meals my family ordered on their Sunday brunch menu had no seasoning or spices in them. Bland food provided in a very weak portion. Honestly surprised how popular this place is.
Well crap. Ive just wasted my five years in Michigan not eating at this place constantly. Its SO good.We came here for a celebratory dinner having heard good things and having walked by once and thought, Oh, that place looks cute. So we showed up early in the evening (they have a quirky non-reservation reservation system, perhaps the only drawback of the entire restaurant and the experience of eating there), and were lucky to be seated immediately (perhaps because it was before the dinner hour had fully started). The menu was drool-worthy... the food is so creative and exciting, and each dish looked incredible. After much deliberation, I ended up ordering a special--the swordfish. My fiance ordered the lamb risotto. And we ordered the brie appetizer. As the kitchen prepared it, we munched on their delicious bread. Why is that stuff so good?! Probably butter. We each got a class of Moscato. Very nice! And $6--not terrible. I noticed the Atwater Java Vanilla Porter on the drinks menu, as well, which we recently discovered and think has to be one of the best beers of all time. $4, again, great! I think they even had it on draft. The brie was a knock-out. Its warm and melty, served with buttery toast and this unfathomably good fig spread (thick and sweet yet savory). I wanted to lick the plate. Our entrees came with a salad, and somehow the salad was amazing, too. We got the pear gorgonzola salad on Bibb lettuce. The lettuce was so tasty, though I do wish theyd cut it into smaller pieces. And the salad had this real kick to it!My swordfish was also outstanding. Meaty, tender, cooked beautifully. My fiance said, I didnt even know fish could be like that! and I knew exactly what he meant. The sides--carrots, squash, and potatoes were all good. Not the best things ever, but fine additions to the main plate. Likewise the lamb risotto was insanely good--creamy and tender, and so rich in flavor. Finally, a quirky note, I got a sprig of fresh oregano with my sides. Id never before eaten fresh oregano; what a treat! We didnt get dessert, but appreciated the little chocolate we each got with the check. Even the chocolate was great! So overall, we really loved it. Its a pricy meal--probably $40 to $60 per person (incl. tax and tip), but felt very much worth it. A beautiful place, delicious and creative food, and a menu so full of things I cant wait to go back and try.
Quality of food has gone waaaay down! Ordered the seared ahi tuna appetizer and it was flaky and chewy. Outback has better by far! The seaweed salad that accompanied the ahi tuna was off in flavor and had no crunch. When I showed the waiter, he simply said oh Im sorry. And walked away. The signature bloody mary was boring. The Sunday special, a seafood pasta dish was served over what was identical to undercooked packaged ramen noodles. The shrimp had an oddly textured and very unnecessary bread like coating & the lobster and scallops were over cooked and very tough. Not a very flavorful dish. The fries and blood orange/pomegranate martini were nice. The final bill was appalling considering the food was unappetizing and tbe staff couldnt care less. As if an Im sorry was going above and beyond. This restaurant has become a joke.

2022-03-20New to town and been meaning to come here... and then the anouncement that Craig Common is retiring 😢. Long story short we got reservations to dine before they close thier doors. I cant say enough, The Common Grill is anything but common and lives up to its reputation! Thank you Mr. Common for a delicious evening... happy retirement.*UPDATE*We just learned that the Common Grill will continue on under new ownership and look forward to future experiences!

2022-05-30Food at the Common Grill is consistently good, although other guests in my party indicated that some of the items, i.e. green beans, lacked some of the lip-smacking deliciousness as prepared under the former ownership. The service is great, and our server was very attentive. The new owners have raised the prices, which is understandable, but it puts a meal at the Common Grill into the once a year category for me.

2022-04-17Active place, great food and wine, and good service. Only negative was that we felt pressured to vacate our table. They were crowded but we were not done with our second bottle of wine. We ended up going across the street for a after dinner drink.

2021-07-22Awesome!! We went twice during our visit and both times the food and service was excellent. There is usually a wait yo get in but you can make reservations on line. I wish I could have the lobster and shrimp fettuccine every week!

2022-06-04We returned with the new owners getting their feet wet for a destination restaurant! We ordered the most humble dishes on the menu as great restaurants often attend to the most minute detail. We were glad they kept the menu but Mr Common was a stickler to detail as he stood erect and was Master to all he surveyed! My humble seafood soup was a clear broth which lacked depth and the proportion of romaine leaves overpowered the honeyed pears and walnuts in my salad. Having just returned from the Tuscany area my dining experience here was lackluster! I dont recall Mr Common ever used romaine leaves but a nice mix of color in his salads. Yes pears were often used in Tuscany salads and they were aplenty.

2022-06-20Brought my husband there for Fathers day expecting their pear salad came with bib lettuce as before. We were truly disappointed that they changed the recipe. Please bring the Bib lettuce back with your pear salad. It creates a delicate taste and flavor and makes a big difference.
