Cooks is the greatest! Fantastic ice cream and you can explore the factory where the cows and calfs are cared for. Cooks invested in a large expansion with modern husbandry resources. No one could visit the farm and believe that these animals arent given excellent care and attention. But dud I mention the ice cream? Wow!
Work in Clarkston, but I live in Bay city. I drive by almost daily on my way to work. Yesterday I packed an extra ice pack and brought my cooler back pack to work. I stopped by to get some ice cream sandwiches. I asked the girls working, if they could double bag the sandwiches for me in hopes that they would keep until I got home. The girls were so sweet and helpful. The ice cream sandwiches were perfect by the time I got home! The ice cream sandwiches tasted fantastic and my husband is currently enjoying his 4th spicy beef stick 😂. Thank you for having such a fantastic team working for you. The service and product is AMAZING at Cooks!!
Very nice place for taking small kids, a great learning experience for them. Their ice creams are really good, definitely worth a try. They also sell milk and eggs. Milk definitely made sense as the quality definitely felt better. But eggs didnt make sense as I dont think it was from their farm. But nice few hours of time spent on a weekend evening with your family.
Cooks is an all time family favorite. The ice cream is great. The dairy drive through is so fun! By far the best is the entire ambiance of the place. We get the very best photos there. The farm is open to field trips which are delightful! The new barn and milking system is amazing!
It was a lot of fun for the kids! They got to pet cows, eat cider donuts, go on a hay ride, and pick out pumpkins. Hay rides are $6 a piece, same for pumpkins. They also have ice cream, but we didnt make it to that. They encourage mask wearing and social distancing. And dont forget quarters for feed so you can feed the cows. Plenty to do for a family fun day.
I love coming here. Its such a charming gem tucked away from the busy parts of SE MI. My husband and I come here to enjoy the baby cows mostly. The ice cream shop allows us to make it into a little date! They have all the basic flavors and a a couple unique ones. Oh, and large portion sizes. Great to keep you and the family entertained for 30 min to an hour.
Wonderful place to take the kids. Aside from their always fabulous homemade ice cream, in the fall they offer wagon rides out to the pumpkin fields along with a amazing corn field maze! I GPSs about 90% of the maze for fun, and attached the photo here (spoiler alert). Definitely worth a stop oh, especially if you have kids!
Great ice cream! We get ground beef, milk, and bratwurst here too. Great experience for the kiddos too since you can go see the cows as well. My nephew even got to feed a baby cow a bottle one time we visited. Its definitely worth a visit! Now my son loves to see the cows.
We come here every year to pick pumpkins. I have to say every year we come, we have a fantastic time.We have a 3 year old son and now a month old baby girl. We took a family trip here yet again. Everyone is so incredibly friendly. They have all sorts of animals, even some baby cows that my son loved to see.The best thing is the pumpkin patch. Its VERY affordable for what you get. $10 a person gets you a hayride out to the pumpkin patch and back,(Its a very long hayride too!), Small cup of chocolate milk, and a donut! All for $10!After we did that we got some of their homemade icecream. I had the pumpkin crunch. Whew it was very delicious. It was a wonderful way to end a fun family day.
☆A REAL working dairy farm w cows, pigs, pumpkins, authentic country air (farm fumes) ;) and yummy homemade ice cream ♡The cows look healthy, the calves are plenty and cute, the pigs ofcourse smelly. ..Friendly staff! We enjoyed our unplanned visit and hopefully will come back sometime.
We got ice cream cones through the drive through. I havent been to Cooks since I was a kid and memory can be a hard thing to live up to.Im so pleased to say this trip didnt disappoint. Their ice cream is so creamy and packed with flavor its hands-down the best cone youll get in Oakland County. Ice cream with savoring is always worth the trip.
I took my kids here for Ice cream. My youngest is 5 and oldest is 14. Everyone had a great time. The ice cream was amazing. We ordered smalls and it was a lot of ice cream. We walked around for about an hour petting all the cows. It was such a cool experience. I will definitely be going again. The ice cream shop was drive through only. The inside of the store is closed.
Only the drive thru is open but after getting your ice cream you can park and walk around to see the cows. There wasnt much to do other than see the cows chomping and smelling the farm smells. Dont expect to keep little kids entertained for long. The ice cream wasnt very good, not creamy and a bit watery. Been there done that.
We live 5 min from the farm or what our family has called it for the past 13 years that we have lived in this beautiful town.Cooks is a wonderful place to get away and love on some cute baby cows and eat some fabulous homemade dairy products. 👍💖👍Plus the staff is always sooo warm and friendly!
We recently visited Cooks for a hayride and pumpkin pickin. The hayride lasted nearly half an hour as you venture far out to their enormous pumpkin patch. The pumpkins are mostly large some huge and are a great deal. When you get back your treated to a very small glass of their great chocolate milk and a donut. They also have a store that sells their fresh milk and icecream. You wont be disappointed visiting Cooks theyr great.
This is an outstanding place to visit if you want some of the highest quality milk and dairy products youve ever had. I strongly recommend the ice cream, as it is better than anything youre going to get from the store. You also get to see the cows if you want to, which is fun.
What can I say? I have been going to Cooks for years in fact when we lived in Ortonville I would walk there nearly every day with my children. The owners are fabulous the food is great Ive been very happy with my experiences there for years now I would highly recommend this place.
Ill start with this: if you love ice cream, Cooks has it. So why two stars? Let me tell you a story.I used to frequent Cooks Dairy Farm (CDF from here on out) in the late 90s and 00s. I loved visiting with friends and going on dates there in particular because you could get your ice cream and then stroll around and watch the cows enjoying themselves in the field. Sometimes theyd even come up to the fence and you could give them a scratch on the head. As cows are my favorite animal, you can imagine that this was pretty wonderful (better than some of the dates). As you can imagine, I have very fond memories.Recently I was back in Michigan visiting family. My fiancé was visiting with me and I wanted to take her somewhere wonderful. Naturally, CDF came to mind.Pulling into their parking lot, I could already see that things had changed. Where was the field? Where were the cows? We purchased our ice cream and began waking around.Behind the main building were small, individual enclosures with one calf in each. A little shelter for sharing in, but otherwise no shade, and it was sunny and hot. The quality of their food was lacking. Then there was the new-to-me barn, packed with cows, heads in restraints, manure around their feet. The conditions were disheartening, the fiancé saying they were awful. Her father being a recently retired cattleman, and her growing up on the farm, she has some knowledge of this. Again, the food quality was lacking. The last building was relatively small, dank and dark, and there were too many cows in too little space. Manure everywhere and once again, sub par hay.No field, just big, dark buildings where the cows had limited movement and were wallowing in their own waste. I lost my appetite and threw my barely touched ice cream away. I am udder-ly disappointed (see what I did there). In all seriousness, though, the ice cream is good, but having lived out west for 10+ years now, I can get better ice cream from better farms. When I visit the Mitten, I wont ever be visiting CDF again. Its genuinely sad for me to see the direction theyve taken and I can only hope that things might change in the future.
Great country getaway destination, we rolled in with a bunch of bikes and they held the window for us. Gotta love the moo cows... 🖖😎 This was the first group ride for me and the wife with the Honda GoldWing riders association chapter D2. Perfect evening and Yes we will be returning with the family.
This is the only brand of milk I will buy. As a zoologist (with 24 years of experience at 3 major US zoos, including working with various hoofstock), it was easy to see how well cared for their cows are. This isnt a milk-em-to-death kind of dairy.Their cows are in a more than adequate area for flight distance (the amount of space each animal in a group needs to feel comfortable), they have a good quarantine area, and I dont believe they allow animals treated with antibiotics to be milked.Theyre healthy and have fantastic temperaments, which tells me their keepers love them very much. It shows.Sometimes they might be muddy, but Ive never met a cow that didnt enjoy a good mud bath in certain circumstances. The ice cream is the best in the state (and several others, IMHO) and they have a great variety of flavors. If you have kids they can pet the cows and in the spring you can love on the calves. The cows seem to enjoy the people as much as the people enjoy the cows. Highly recommend this place and the dairy products coming out of it. Thanks, Cooks for caring about your cows and not just money. It shows.
My husband and I live 5 minutes away from Cook’s. When we first started going to Cook’s we LOVED it! We even got our extended family obsessed with their ice cream. However the last few times the portions have been underwhelming for what we pay (the small I got wasn’t even a full scoop of ice cream) and there has been NO pieces of anything in the ice cream. I got the udder butter which is supposed to have buckeyes within the ice cream and there were NONE. My husband got the cow pie and there was only TWO cashews within the whole medium ice cream he got. Very disappointing!! We want to support a local business but it’s hard when the quality doesn’t reflect the price people pay. The ice cream itself is delicious but there needs to be more pieces within their ice cream if they want to advertise that there are “Buckeyes” in the udder butter and “cashews & caramel” in the cow pie. We used to buy half gallons of their ice cream and have started to buy Guernsey Farms ice cream half gallons from Neiman’s Market instead. We hope to be back for a better experience. We want to love Cook’s again!
Cute farm!! Perfect for a quick trip when there’s nothing to do. Baby cows, teenage cows and adult cows are all around the farm and they are very friendly. They love corn (25 cents a handful), and are very friendly animals. No picnic tables, store is drive thru only, clean bathrooms are outdoors next to baby cows-very convenient for us with young children. We walked around, saw a cow getting milked with a machine, pet all the cows, fed them, saw the stinky pigs, then grabbed some ice cream. Total time spent here was about an hour-we went at 11am on a weekday and it was not busy but did start to get busy when we left at noon. No picnic tables but there are garbage cans for your picnic trash. This place is pretty far north from me but worth it for something to do. Shower after cause man we stink lol. Very kind staff, too.
I do not know if i could talk more highly of any ice cream shop. I have gone to Cooks since I was young and I have never been disappointed. The ice cream is always fresh and delicious, and being able to walk around and see the cows that made that ice cream possible really proves to be a special experience. Every parent should bring their children to Cooks!
Disclaimer- I have been going to this farm for ice cream since I was a baby, so I may be bias. Nonetheless, I say with full confidence that Cook’s has the best ice cream in Michigan. Better than Hudsonville (by a landslide). Holy cow is my favorite (their version of mackinaw island fudge) and they have a ton of other unique flavors- from cowppuccino to coconut almond fudge and blue moo! As an added bonus, you can meet the cows responsible for the ice cream. The cows are treated very well, and you might even get to meet some calves. Cook’s also sells milk and other products. So, if you’re ever driving through Ortonville, make the right choice- grab some ice cream and pet a cow.
My sons bus stop is at Cooks, so we are there a lot. The tour is amazing and I love the new barn they put up. The ice cream is absolutely amazing. You can tell it is real ice cream by how fast it melts! The milk is great too. Really enjoy this place in the summer. Kids love being able to pet the smaller babies and see all the animals.
Drive through only tonight. There were about 20 cars lined up but they had 2 drive up windows open and 2 girls on foot taking orders in the second line so it went pretty fast. Good ice cream. Grand kids got to see (and smell) lots of cows and calves close up. Picnic tables were removed to help with social distancing. No inside service.
I have loved this place since the 1980s, my grandparents house was a mile away from here growing up. You use to get you milk in plastic bags back then. I have always looked forward to fall at Cooks for the caramel 🍎 ice cream. It is the absolute best thing ever! Make it into a shake and you will not be disappointed! Everything Cooks has is farm fresh and amazing... You cant go wrong when you stop here
Fast and friendly service. Beautiful cows and the cleanest dairy farm Ive ever been to. You can barely smell any cow manure. The ice cream was delicious. I got the double utter butter. 😛😛😝 It was awesome to bring the wife here because she loves animals and the got some pretty new born baby cows, pretty darn cute. We had a great time! Thanks Cooks!!!
Was recommended to go here for good ice cream and boy were they wrong! Tasted terrible! Im not a fan of freezer burnt ice cream but if you are, then this is the place for you. Inside the building had a funky smell, and even made my ice cream smell funny. Wouldnt recommend. If I could give 0 stars I would.
Cooks Farm Dairy is amazing! We recently found this gem and stopped by last weekend to check it out. We purchased fresh milk, eggs, ground beef and delicious ice cream via their drive up window!!! The ice cream is to die for 💜 We will back to support this farm again next week (and the weeks to come) because of the great service and products and in honor of our family in Kentucky who are dairy farmers.
Cooks is always a terrific place to visit. They offer wonderful ice cream and fresh dairy products, farm tours, and fun events. I love that they have a drive through window to buy milk. We have done birthday parties, class field trips, and fun family outings at cooks. Weve even seen calves being born on our visits. I always look forward to their chocolate milk at the Oakland County Fair, but now the fair isnt using Cooks milk. Boo! Its worth the drive if you want a fun family outing.
They have the best ice cream and milk around! Highly recommend going in the summer if you would like ice cream, however its a great place to visit in the Fall as well. Recommend taking a hay ride to their pumpkin patch in October. You can pick out a pumpkin and then enjoy donuts and chocolate milk.
Wonderful to see the changes Cooks have made at the farm. The new barn for the animals safety is especially great. Its as clean as it can possibly be. The huge cows were so nice to see as they ate their feed. There were little baby pigs, so cute playing. My husband fed a hungry little calf. And we enjoyed the best ice cream made right there at the farm. This place is a Year Round Michigan Must Visit.❤
The ice cream tastes better than the cattle farm that it resides on smells. Ive been told that the Blue Moo tastes really good. The flavors I tried were really great and by the look of the line everyone else was enjoying the ice cream as well. The service was fast and prices were great.
Love this place. They have the best homemade ice cream around. With the cows right there that ice cream is very rich and tasty. All the freshest ingredients makes for all the best ice creams. They have their own fresh milk and their chocolate milk is so rich and smooth. The homemade hot fudge is scrumptious. Forget about Ben and Jerrys....go to Cooks dairy farm where you can get your favorite ice creams and other Farm Fresh Products while enjoying them sitting out relaxing by the farm side.
Cooks Farm Dairy has the BEST Milk & Ice Cream in Michigan!!! The Customer Service is absolutely outstanding, even when there is a long line you never wait long because the Staff works hard to make sure the line moves quickly! They are friendly & helpful. I love Cooks, Id recommend it to anyone looking for Fresh Dairy Products!!!
They process and create the best dairy products Ive ever had. We have been enjoying there ice cream and milk since 1983. Oh love the turkey butter that they mold for Thanksgiving... The farm and store are a great place for families to visit... Family owned and operated for generations. Genuine goodness!!!!!
Great family place that wont break the bank! You can eat homemade ice cream, great variety of flavors. While youre enjoying your ice cream you can visit the live stock that it came from. They also have local honey, fuge, ice cream pies and other yummy food! All throughout the year they have fun family activities, hayrides, corn maze, and much more!!! Bonus youre supporting local farms!
Great place to take a family drive to enjoy home made ice cream. my favorite coconut almond and the butter pecan. but in the fall pumpkin is my favorite. there are so many flavors to try that you have to go back again and again. the kids will like seeing/feeding the cows or just sitting and enjoying their ice cream at the picnic tables.
Cooks Farm is a nice little spot to get some quality ice cream in the summer! It is an actual farm and does have farm animals, so expect to see lots of families and kids running around everywhere. The ice cream shop is located out front and the farm is out back, but theres something for the whole family here. Theres generally a good amount of people, so expect to wait in line for a while, but youll be rewarded with some fantastic ice cream!
Excellent tasty and fresh ice cream. They have got variety of flavors. The double scoops have more quantity than you would expect. Dont order double unless you can really eat! I would recommend this to everyone. Nice drive to this place as well. You can also get to see cows, calves and pigs!! You can feed the calves with corn with a quarter 🙂
I love cooks dairy and have been coming here for many years. Sadly I was very disappointed on my last visit. While waiting in line to order I noticed that the car in front sent one of their singles back. I was disappointed and disgusted to see the young lady proceed to put the icecream from the returned dish back into the container in the freezer. We are in the middle of this pandemic and food safety and handling is under greater scrutiny then before. Any item handled by a customer and returned should have been thrown into the trash.
They have the best ice cream milk well any kind of dairy eggs honey, You dont wanna shop for any of your dairy needs anywhere else and if youre taking your kids to get ice cream what better way the let them see exactly where cream, butter, and ice cream come from you can go out back and pet the cows and the see the pigs and even see the baby calfs. This is not only a great place to take your family for your dairy needs weather it is the ice cream milk cheese or any of that but its the fabulous family place where you will all grow together!
Very good ice cream, super fresh! Ice cream is freshly made from the cows milk on site. You can even visit with the cows and pet them. Warning: it does smell like manure since this is a farm, but they do have a picnic area you can sit away from the smell. I would definitely recommend you check this place out at least once!
Local homemade ice cream right at the farm! You can also buy milk and ground beef directly from them so you of coarse know its fresh! Very friendly family and staff. You are welcome to eat your ice cream while walking around the farm and petting the cows. On nice summer weekend nights the line reaches out the door but if you go during off times there is usually little or no wait.
Looking for an all natural ice cream and a bit of nature. This place is both, in the middle of a country farm setting. Great place to take visiting guest and children while eating your ice cream you can take a stroll around seeing the pigs & cows on the premise. Their ice cream is delicious and a single is a double dipped cone. My favorite, coconut chocolate almond.
This is a local treasure that we are very proud of! Cooks has the best ice cream Ive ever had, and a variety of flavors that always make me want to come back for more. The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable about the history of the farm. They do have a few other locally produced items for sale too (I.e. fudge, eggnog, cream, honey). I should note that are slightly on the pricier side, but thats obviously because their products are locally made and have great quality. They do also have a drive thru window, but I would recommend going inside to see their full selection!
Ive been to Cooks a million times. Its one of those places that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Not much has changed since my friends in high school were working there 30+ years ago. Thats back when my family would buy milk in a bag. We didnt find any Cooks heavy cream in the cooler on this stop, but while we were there we just HAD to get some ice cream. So good. This was my favorite ice cream growing up and its still my favorite.

2021-09-13We came to Cooks and noticed since we had last been there some upgrades had been made to the facilities. The calves are adorable and I love when one of them comes up to get petted. We always get ice cream during our trip my husband got Tractor Trails and Oreo Cookie and I got Udder Butter topped with Cow Pie. The ice cream is always delicious! The price is reasonable and the facilities were clean. The employees were nice and respectful. We always enjoy a trip to Cooks!

2022-06-04Theres nothing like creamy fresh ice cream served from the dairy farm that makes it. The ice cream at Cooks is always fresh and never icy. They give a generous serving for a good price. If you want you can walk around and visit the cows. The only current drawback is that it is drive thru only. I usually like to view the ice cream before I order to get a visual as compared to a description on a board. However in this current era its understandable. Still, a great place to indulge your sweet tooth!

2022-07-02Cooks is a little slice of Americana! A local owned spot in Ortonville to grab an Icecream cone and let the kids see the cows. It is a great way to get out of the city and go for a nice country drive, go for a hike at Independence Oaks, and then stop for a sweet treat at Cooks Farm Dairy before heading home. A northern Oakland County staple.

2022-04-06I live visiting Cooks whenever I come to town. Its free to visit cows and pigs, babies and adults. They make their own ice cream and other products which are amazing and high quality. They are a must visit!!!

2022-05-27What can I say, its a classic ice cream spot with fantastic ice cream at that! Not too overly priced but the location is a bit hard to get to if you dont know where youre going. You can also walk around and see the animals which is always fun and the animals are very lively and responsive so its not a depressing show. 10/10 if youre in the area you MUST eat here!

2022-05-29A local gem with great ice cream. Ive not met an ice cream I didnt like, but a particular favorite is the raspberry chocolate torte. Its got rich sweetcream with dark chocolate chunks and the perfect amount of sharp raspberry to cut the sweetness = bliss.

2021-08-16Purchased fresh ice cream from the car to keep our social distancing then parked and took a look at how the cows were milked and kept. My granddaughter loved getting close to the calfs and watching the cows as they step up to the milking machine.
