DFT gets five stars for a clean, beautiful 1920s theater, first class films, and a very sizable interior with comfortable seating. The pic is from the last row of the main floor. I could see perfectly. Parking can be a problem but then again, it is everywhere in the city.
I was at the Detroit Mosiac production. About their trip to Africa. It was an excellent play. This is a historic place always clean always had an excellent customer service staff. Parking is close for $7. Go to website for film festival you will see movies that are only talked about on award shows. Very unusual films .
Simply the best movie venue in Michigan with season after season of incredible independent movies and documentaries. The Crystal Gallery meeting and eating hall is likely the grandest such chamber outside if Europes grand Halls. As part of the DIA you have something to see beforehand too
Weve seen many films and other productions at THE DFT. Its a classic, beautifully maintained theatre. The film series they run there every year is absolutely terrific. We saw the live Sam Glass produced A Thousand Thoughts documentary with and about the Kronos Quartet there just last night. It fit the theatre perfectly and was a wonderful show.
Beautiful traditional movie theater attached to the Detroit Institute of Arts near downtown Detroit. Hosts classic and contemporary cinema. The annual showing of Oscar nominated animated and live action shorts is not to be missed. The DFT also shows Oscar nominated documentaries. One of the few venues where you can see the non-blockbuster movies that are up for Academy Awards.
The theater is beautiful. The entire movie going experience was great inside the DIA. Outside the parking was difficult. The lot off of John R. was extremely backed up and slow to enter. Unfortunately, I lost my patience and parked on the street next to the lot. Unbeknownst to me there were two parking meter stations that were very difficult to notice. Not being a regular visitor to the DIA I thought my luck was great to have found a free parking spot. Unfortunately, my luck was bad and I received a $45 parking ticket... cant blame anyone but me.

2022-04-29The theater is exquisite. The architecture and design is reminiscent of the theaters of old with the baroque and ornate style, marble floors, cloth comfortable seats. The sound and acoustics were pitch perfect. Its a really nice theater!

2022-03-13March 2022. Oscar Nominated Animated Short Films. First time back in two years.Wonderful experience. Every other row is blocked off to space people out while we are still in the pandemic. Sold out show at 35% capacity. Everybody was masked. No concessions. Everything was clean. This is an amazing building and fantastic volunteers.

2020-03-09The Detroit Film Theater plays such a wide variety of films, from silent films accompanied by live music to cat videos. Because its housed in the Detroit Institute of Arts, you know anything you watch will be fantastic. The theater itself is a work of art.
