Restaurant reconfigured since last time i was there. New bar less comfortable and quite loud. Ordered Bruschetta and was quite disappointed. Bread had a charred flavor that overpowered other flavors. Sherry sauce with mushrooms and asparagus on the grilled bread was heavy and unappealing. Have eaten here many times in the past and have had good meals. Tonights food was not good. Attentive staff who did offer to add to or change Bruschetta but i already had the unpleasant flavors in my mouth.
We tried Falt River Grill tonight for the first time. We had a few concerns with our experience throughout our dinner and asked if we could just express our concerns to a manager. Dawn abruptly came to our table and talked through everything with us. She was very kind, empathetic, and understanding. She listened to our frustrations and was honest in providing explanation that helped us understand the why behind some of our experience. In no way were we looking for compensation, we just wanted to provide feedback for improvement. Dawn was so genuine and sincere in her concerns for our experience and opinion of Flat River. She went above and beyond to turn the experience around for us and as a result of her exceptional customer service, we will absolutely be giving Flat River Grill another shot.
We just moved to the area not long ago, and Ive been waiting to try this place. I was pleasantly surprised. Nicely renovated old building has a lot of character, and its right on the river, so overall its aesthetically pleasing. Service was prompt, cheerful, and competent. The food was very tasty! I loved the pan fried goat cheese appetizer! Im a huge fan of Reubens, so anytime a new place has one, its where I start. Sort of a measuring stick food item for me. Theirs was very tasty, with a surprising hit of anise in it. I normally hate anise, but it was good! The faro salad was probably the best thing, though. So bright and fresh with lots of flavor! Great place for a date.
Superb garlic roasted brussel sprouts! Amazing tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes with asparagus and fabulous wild mushroom wood fired pizza! The smells and tastes of this place are as sweet as the river views from the outside patio. Great staff with on top of everything management gave us fast service as well. Really enjoyed ourselves and took advantage of a free sample of a new microbrew beer before ordering it. We will return to explore the rest of the extensively delicious looking menu.
We had a lovely experience here. Clean and welcoming atmosphere with a contemporary warehouse feel. The staff is over the top friendly and attentive. We had the pan fried goat cheese appetizer which was amazing! For entrees we had the Risotto Primavera with sweet potatoe patty and the Peruvian Burrito. Both were on-point delicious. Well definitely be back to try more.
THE best wood fired pizza Ive ever had outside of Chicago at the Flat River Grill in Lowell. We got the tarragon, fennel sausage, goat cheese, mushroom, caramelized onions pizza...and perfect crust! Charcuterie appetizer was a bit on the skimpy on size but very good and enough for two. My cherry, rosemary cocktail was VERY yummy! Great receptionist and wait staff. Worth trying! We will definitely go back even in the area. Lots of antique shops and art galleries to visit in Lowell. :-)
We are new to the neighborhood and wanted to give this place a try. The fried Brussels were very yummy and came out pretty quick. However, after our appetizer we waited an hour for our meals. My steak was cooked pretty well done when I asked for medium rare, although the flavors were very good. Our waitress was kind and gave us a free dessert to go since we waited so long. I’d like to give it another try, maybe during a time that’s less busy.
We went to the flat river grill for a date night. Sat out on the patio which was a nice view. Service was friendly and food came out pretty fast. The drink I had was super yummy. My date ordered a pizza which was really good. I got a chicken dinner which wasnt bad but wasnt great either. I would stick to thier pizza next time. We really enjoyed the cookie dessert.
One of my local favorites!! I’ve literally never had anything here I didn’t like. I have on occasion had average service but generally the service has been great also. We don’t have a lot of choices in Lowell but this is one of my go to restaurants!!Had to add this photo. We went here today for brunch and tried the blood orange mimosas!! Wow!! The best!! Food again was so good!! And our server Jon was great!!!
Meh food, marginal cocktails, rude staff. If this place was less expensive, might be a better rating. This place has really gone downhill in the last few months. $8 for this lettuce and a 30 minute wait. *Update 11/14* I reached out (you asked me to reach out) to the reply to my review and never heard back.
Had a wonderful vegetarian Caprese burger...wood fire grilled and tasted like a real burger. Perfect for someone like me who loves hamburgers but is trying not to eat much beef. Hubbys flank steak burger was also delicious, he reports. We sat on the patio, which was very comfortable. Well worth the drive from the freeway to visit the town of Lowell, and the restaurant is located on a Riverwalk that gives you a nice place to stretch after eating.
Absolutely wonderful!! The food was perfect. The wait staff was so friendly. The kids wanted mac and cheese and it wasnt the standard Kraft box macaroni. My kids loved it. They had a variety of non alcoholic drinks including a fizzy ginger beer. The French fries were fresh.
Reading some of these other reviews made me wonder if we were at the same place! Atmosphere is awesome but thats pretty much where it ends. Menu looked great but even as one of the first customers of the day they were already out of brisket and salmon. Our waiter knew very little and sold us on the blueberry mimosa and served BlackBerry instead. One hour after we ordered we were served but 6 of the 10 meals were stone cold 2 of which were sent back with no management check back! Waiter was nice but really clueless on the necessary skills of the hospitality industry. The place has great potential and perhaps in a later post pandemic period they will return stronger.
We love eating at Flat River Grill, and our experience is always positive. Overall, I think there menu is quite condensed but offers some wonder options for Wood Fire Pizza, Salads, and Entrees. If you are looking for an appetizer, I love the Artichoke and Arugula Dip. You cant go wrong. The service is also top notch, but be prepared to have a leisurely meal. If you eat outside, you have wonderful views of the River and showboat. This is also a perfect eat after a day kayaking on the river if you end here. Its definitely among my favorite eats in small town Lowell.
My son and I and two grandsons stoped in the Flat river grill today it was busy as it was Father’s Day so the wait was a little long but to be expected they had a lot of to go orders as well as in house. It was worth the wait. My Grandson’s liked the wood fired pizza my son and I had the wood fired burgers they where very good we all agreed we would make the drive to return for another meal.
The atmosphere here is always delightful. It’s a small place but the food is amazing. The Walleye is an dish plus an old favorite. Most restaurants fail at cooking this amazing fish but not this restaurant. They nailed it. Thanks for that. Pan Fried Goat Cheese is amazing. The prices are extremely high but it is what it is. Beware of the old front door ugh I struggle with that. Well clearly I keep coming back for the fish.
Visited Flat River Grill tonight for the first time. My husband and I decided to celebrate our anniversary & have our kids join us. Place was nice with a warm & welcoming atmosphere. The outside seating was nice && had a great view, especially towards the late evening. Our service started out okay with a few bumps but after expressing my frustration the staff was very helpful && the manager who was on shift this night was great and tookour concerns seriously. The manager made the rest of our evening there very pleasant & granted us with great service! I was not able to catch their names but wanted to give another thank you! We will definitely will be back.
This is probably Lowells signature restaurant. It has a great vibe with indoor and outdoor seating by the Flat River. The food is good, and the staff is friendly. It is usually very busy during the dinner hour, so its best to get there early or have a lot of patience during peak periods.
I work on the road so I go to a new diner nearly every day, and I gotta say this is by far the worst Ive been to in ages. Burger was aggressively average and exceedingly dry. Soda had a I just boiled pasta in this water taste. And the entire place feels like a two bit diner trying to be way more than it is.
Seated outside on a cold rainy day a couple of weeks ago. We were all very chilly, asked the staff about using the propane heaters, we were told they were put away for the season. We could visibly see them out in the open. As time went by and getting our drinks we saw the staff setting up a couple heaters for another table... we thought what the heck is going on? We asked again and then they decided to let us use one. Rain running off the canopy drenched one of our tables, splashing onto our parties meals. Awful time, awful service, meals were sub-par for the price. We definitely thought it would be better.
Food was okay, but the patio was nice. I was frustrated about being asked to wait in the crowded entry with my disabled grandmother when every table in the restaurant was open. I think seating and dropping off water to folks would not have terribly overwhelming to the kitchen. It would also be nice to have the option to make a reservation in the future.
This is a very nice restaurant and should have a 4 star rating. The staff, howver, made some unfortunate mistakes. 1. My wife has to have gluten free food ......they brought her regular food and almost made her sick. Only by my wifes discovery did they even know their mistake. 2. It took a good while to get our food. After waiting all that time , my wife had to wait twice as long as the rest of us to eat. You could see the disappointment on her face. Also, had we waited to eat with her, our food would have been completely cold. 3. Even after bringing out the correct food, they didnt put ketchup on the burger as ordered. More disappointment. Now on the positive side. The staff did everything they could to get the mosquitoes and bugs away from us. We ate outside and because we were by the water , mosquitoes were fierce. In addition, the manager made sure my wifes meal was free of charge. Even though that was true, we cannot help but feel like this meal was quite off setting. I think they could easily bring this place up a notch by getting the wait times down and by getting their orders correct. Hope this is a help for those who love to eat out.
Finally managed to get here last night after 2 years telling myself I needed to but putting it off because of pricing. WOW. The food is amazing. Had a glass of sangria, the wood-fired flat bread for an app, and the honey and black pepper beef brisket for dinner. Everything was incredible. We sat at the bar because they were very busy with the Riverwalk festival and it did take awhile to get our food, but it was completely worth it once we had our plates in front of us. The flat bread was the perfect mix of flavors between the sweetness of berries and honey with the tartness of the goat cheese. The beef was like a perfectly cooked pot roast that just fell apart in your mouth, coupled with the potatoes all set off by the dijon-dill aioli. Perfection.
The service is always great here, prompt, friendly, and very professional. I wish I could say the same for the food. The quality has crashed and burned over the last few years. Today, we ordered pizza and it was not good at all. We only ate one slice. I ordered Chicken Michael and the shrimp tasted off and the bearnaise sauce was like tasteless yellow jelly. This used to be my fav restaurant in the Lowell area, I wont be going back
Hey kids mac and cheese has large noodles, so lets say turn off to the kids and they didnt eat it. Their brunch special included toast which is really French bread grilled. Not buttered and no jam or jelly available. I use the price of a hamburger to gauge pricing. Hamburger was $13.50 which seems to be a bit extreme for what you get. And your seating is very crowded, especially when they put eight people directly behind us at a table designed for six. The server, Jeff, was excellent.
I recently had an absolutely wonderful experience at the Flat River Grill. It had been years since I was out that way. It was quite something to see the team there working so seamlessly together. In this Covid world, there are no “norms”. Watching the servers, bartenders, even the GM all help one another gave a tremendous compliment to the already stellar food. I love seeing goat cheese options on the menu.Keep up the great work!
Good food as usual...kitchen very slow, but a sign of the time..our waitress kept us in water and drinks and very gracious..my one complaint is the flies! I realize they cant control the fly population, but I think a couple or 3 floor fans would have been helpful..it made dinner pretty miserable
Such a great location and great food. We had a larger party dine here this week and our server Ian was AMAZING. He was very attentive and accommodating, especially with our busy kids. During this time of pandemic, dining out has been very spotty service, but not here!
Very beautiful place to sit and eat! The waiter was very nice. Service was excellent. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because it seemed to take a little too long to get the food served. Other than that, very nice. They have vegetarian/vegan options on the menu which made me very happy. I had a sweet potatoe hamburger. Very nice.
We ate here recently for the first time and it was a delightful experience. We were seated promptly, and it was decently busy. We requested to sit on the patio because it was a beautiful day, and what a lovely patio they have. About half of it is covered, so you could technically be out there if it was raining, the patio is just feet away from the water, and its just a pleasant space. As much as we wanted to get a starter, we were only there for a quick meal, so we passed - lots of good choices though. I ordered the Truffle Mushroom Fettuccine and my friend ordered the Steak Ciabatta sandwich with fries. Both dishes were excellent - the pasta other than needing some seasoning, was really delicious. The sandwich was put on a really soft bun, and the fries were crispy and seasoned - so good!!They dont have the best craft beer menu, but it was sufficient enough to get something decent to drink. Our service was fantastic! I absolutely love the girl that was serving us. Everyone that was working seemed really nice and helpful. Overall, we loved the place, and the prices were not that outrageous. What a nice place!
The food at Flat River Grill is really good. We love the pizzas and the burgers. The atmosphere inside is nice and cozy and being able to sit outside, along the Flat River is great during the summer. The food and atmosphere has brought us back quite a few times.Sadly, I am giving a lower rating because we havent always had great luck with the service. We had one experience, with take-out, where a salad was missed and a brownie we ordered was more of a pile of crumbled chocolate then it was a brownie. Almost looked like leftover brownie from a batch. One other time I went to pay for a meal with a gift card and we were told the gift card machine was broken, so I was forced to pay for the meal out of pocket, which I had not planned on. Our most recent trip, the waiter was great but after we received our food we never saw him again until the check came. By that time our drinks had been empty for a while and I had to walk up to the counter twice to request things because the waiter wasnt coming by.All in all, if it wasnt for those 3 experiences, I would say this is an easy 4 or 5 star place.
This place is so great! We were seated right away, and our server, Devin, was so incredibly sweet, very personable, super efficient, & kept our water glasses & drinks full all the time. He was perfectly attentive but never hovered. Hes also knowledgeable about the menu, & they are accommodating to requests & substitutions. All 6 of us loved our food, they have a good variety of items that are very unique. It was hard to decide! The atmosphere is relaxed, comfy, & everyone is very welcoming! I love the smoky smell too! We all highly recommend this place, I just wish I lived closer, but anytime Im on that side of the state Ill do my best to eat there! 💗
While visiting the Flat River Grill last week I was amazed at the quality of the food served and with the service provided. I walked in expecting to be amazed, as is expected with Gilmore Collection Restaurants and left wanting to return as soon as possible. The Flat Iron Steak that I ordered was cooked and seasoned to perfection and I can say it is one of the better steaks Ive ever had. The menu is very diverse and Im excited to try other selections that they offer. The service delivered by Malcolm was great and I would recommend him to anyone who will be visiting soon. I would suggest this restaurant to anyone looking for great food at very reasonable prices. I cannot wait to return, keep up to great work!
If you haven’t had Ian as your server, you haven’t been to a restaurant, period. He made an amazing dinner even better. Heck I think he could serve you day old Taco Bell and make you feel like a special guest at a five star restaurant. He knows what you want to drink, remembers the best conversation pieces, and knows exactly what you need to hear. Just show up and ask to sit in Ian’s section and you will have the best day.The goat cheese pizza was a religious experience, and I’m converting. The creme brule was better than traverse city fine dining. The two in one (the one with blue cheese) is my new favorite salad of all time. Drinks were fantastic. I went here for a great prom dinner years ago and the food has improved exponentially. Screw Grand Rapids , you’re eating at flat river , and you’re eating there with Ian.
GREAT FOOD! My wife and I went to the Flat River Grill for dinner this past weekend to try a new place with another couple. First time any of us ever had been there. We go there about 6:30 pm and the hostess said it would be about 15 min. for a table. Our table was ready in about 5 min. which was good. We sat down, our server was right there getting our drink orders and had a great personality, she was efficient during the whole time we were there, wish I could remember her name. After we ordered the dinners came within a decent time frame, I had the Tuna which was outstanding! My wife had the Mac-n-Cheese, outstanding, the couple we were with had a steak and the Chicken Michael. All our dishes and experience was wonderful, the only complain I have is that the portion of the Tuna and the sides on the Tuna dish could have been larger as well as the Mac-n-Cheese portion. I did not walk away hungry but could of ate plenty more. All in all it was a very good experience and excellent food, we will return.
I love the atmosphere here! The smell of the wood stove burning hickory, the view of the old steam boat on the river, the plank wood floors, the masonry walls, this is the kind of place I like to experience. The service was decent. The food was pretty good. I appreciate that they have plenty of gluten free options for my wife. My only complaint is I ordered my burger medium and they cooked it well done. That being said, the burger still tasted good and I left feeling satisfied.
My wifes favorite restaurant! We have to get the goat cheese appetizer for her every time we go! All the food is high quality and I like the classier ambiance. The unique pizza are good and a nice change of pace. We really liked the one with pickeld veggies on it! Also the beverages called shrubs are worth trying for something different!
Excellent first experience and will be on our short list when going to/from Grand Rapids. The restaurant itself is cozy and the scent of the wood-fired oven is welcoming. Prices are more than fair, especially for the quality of the food, and am looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu on future visits. Definitely a must visit for anybody in the area.
Service was good, food was not, bland and much of the menu was overpriced for the quality and portion if youre going to charge 2.50 to add fries to a 13 dollar sandwich it shouldnt be a toddler portion sorry. and to have a section on the menu for burgers but only offer 2 is kinda pointless,I realize technically you have 4 but 2 of those are vegetarian.
We lived in Saranac for years and were so excited when this restaurant opened. Have been there more times than I can count and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is great, the food amazing, and the service top notch. They aim to please and always do. We moved away a little over a year ago, but have been back to Lowell a few times since just so we can enjoy this restaurant. My husband and I like the option of eating inside or enjoying the river view while dining out on the patio. You can enjoy it all year long. If you are on the fence on what to order, I highly recommend the Cobb Salad. The best Ive had.
I ate here on 2-15-18. Server Debra was kind, welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. Excellent food and service. Some of the best steak cuts Ive ever had. Will come back.My only complaint is the host. He took 3 minutes before he made it to the front to seat us when the place was only half full. He was kind but also seemed out of place, wearing a sweater 3 times his size which contrasted with the rest of the neat, dark and form-fitting attire the rest of the staff was wearing. He also picked his nails while walking to places in full view of customers, which was not pleasant. Like I mentioned, the host was nice but overall could have shown more professionalism with his attire and mannerisms.
The food was great. Waitress was great and the company at the meal was great! We had the dill chicken pizza, delicious! Fish and chips, daughter didnt like the coleslaw but said the fish was best she ever had! Turkey cranberry sandwich on pretzel bun with Bulger salad, both were great! I had the corned beef Ruben, wonderful. Lots of corned beef and sauerkraut! Big sandwich! The fries were even good!
There are good restaurants in Lowell but FLAT RIVER IS THE BEST! The food is outstanding; but the service is even better! On the rare occasion we experienced a minor issue, it was always taken care of immediately; along with management going above and beyond to make it “right” or compensate for any inconvenience. I love to bring out-of-towners here because the food truly is unique and delicious. I will always continue to come back :)
An unfortunate event.... We thought we would try something new and local. We decided to visit the Flat River Grill on Mothers Day. We simply went online and saw the takeout menu, called and ordered. Picked up, got home, got something different. The ticket did not match. Called mgr. He said it would take 20 minutes. Took 65 minutes to get it right. Mgr never offered to comp. I went to the back of the line. Not good cust service. Nice place though, will try again when normal times return. Food was good when right.
Cozy, comfortable, nice atmosphere. Wait staff friendly and attentive (but not annoying and back at your table every 2 minutes). Food was great! For once my husband didn’t complain how his steak was done. At the time of this review, they have wine Wednesday - half off wine by the glass. Prices are a bit high but the food is worth it. I would go back and pay the higher prices just to finish off the meal with a creme brûlée.
Very slow service. Appetizer sat for 30 minutes before it was even served to us and it was 40 minutes before our dinner order was even taken. The place wasnt even that busy but our waiter made us feel like everything was such a rush running around in a panic but yet nothing getting accomplished. Both my husband and I ended up sick by time we got home. Definitely was not the relaxed atmosphere we were hoping for.
Drinks are great and outdoor seating is good. I can’t pin it down but went there before COVID and had a hamburger that had a taste and overwhelming smell of what I can only describe as unburnt lighter fluid or fuel. Went after COVID and had same hamburger with just a slightly less taste of lighter fluid or fuel again. To note my sister had a totally different menu item and she said similar thing.
I feel the food has gone down hill and choices are so limited same ole same ole. Appetizer are limited. I keep trying and have found better places, like their sister company The Blue Water Grill. Its deafing loud in there you cant talk to the person beside you no matter how much you try the noice causes me anxiety.
A nice lunch with the family. We sat on the outside seating area and had indoor heat units keeping us toasty. Good srevice...my water glass was never empty for long. We had a hard time deciding what to order..All looked good and all tasted good. It was a great place for moms birthday. Danielle was the bomb waitress for us. 😃.
Just wanted to give a positive review to Flat River Grill. We had a unique request to cater a dinner to my sister and husband for their 45th anniversary, since they were not able to leave their home due to health issues. Colleen was willing to consider it from the start and worked out the details. It worked beautifully and the food was great. Thanks for helping us celebrate their day in a special way.
Myself and my family have traveled to Michigan to see our family the last two years and each time weve made sure to eat here. Weve always gotten great food here. What I was more impressed with was how great our waiter John handled his job. Most people dont really take into account a two year old and how difficult it is to eat when the food comes all out at once. John put my daughter first which made me really happy. I could go on about the other stuff he did to make our meal enjoyble but I dont want to over do it. Just know that this place has great food and an incredible staff.
We sat at the bar and John was amazing thank you guys so much for a great experience. We came back for 2nd time not only did john remember us by name we learned more about how they infuse their own liquor. We also tried the food and it was amazing pizza you can definently telly they love their jobs and put their hearts into it. Also if you are gluten free not only do they have a gluten free options they will also do safe custom options for example the fish if they can safely make it for you they will. One last thing they are cleaning constantly I have never seen a place wipe so much down to make sure you are safe from carona.
My wife and I came in last night for our anniversary. Now we didnt tell anyone it was our anniversary; not the host or waiter. There was a little hiccup with our appetizer, however our waitress and the manager made it up to us. The food was amazing (as always), and even though Flat River Grill did not know it was our anniversary, they made our experience wonderful on our very special day regardless.
No complaints from me. With that being said, I had a pizza that was from your wood burning pizza oven, and it wad delicious! Nice selection of local beers. The waitstaff were friendly and professional. It was neat to see the food being made in front of you. Finally, the prices on the beer and pizza was reasonable. Highly recomended, and I would come back again.
I have lived in the area for a while now and this was the first time going here. The burger was splendid, the area by the lake we walked down while waiting for a seat is beautiful. (yes this place was very busy and probably normally is from what I can tell). Will definitely be going back to have more of there food!
This is an OK place to eat. Its not great but its not horrible either. The selection is average and the prices are above what you would normally pay for similar quality food. What makes this place stand out is the way they cook a lot of their meats. They use a really cool wood burning oven that makes the entire place smell like a giant camp fire. The food has a noticeable smoky flavor to it which you may or may not like depending on your tastes. It doesnt have an overly heavy smokey flavor but you can tell a difference. The wait staff was courteous and noticed that the initial plate I received had a poor amount of french fries on it so they came out later with a full plate of fries without me having to ask for it.I ended up ordering the 21 burger which was very good. Cooked exactly how I ordered it and was an interesting combination of toppings. If you venture out of the comfort food of burgers and appetizers their menu gets pretty pricey. Steaks and signature items easily cost 15 dollars or more per plate. The beer selection was weak and slightly over priced.I would recommend this place as it seems to be the best quality place in town to eat if you dont want the standard food chains.
Nice server, cozy environment, TERIBLE food! My son and I were from out of town wanting to enjoy a nice lunch together, however, the food was so terrible and over priced. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich for $10. What I received was an extremely small chicken breast that was barely breaded and had absolutely no taste. It was placed on a huge overly dry and falling apart ciabatta bun, again no taste. The housemade chips had SO much salt and pepper they were hard to enjoy. My sons $12 Angus burger was literally a store bought performed burger, I know this because I asked our server to verify my suspicions. Also, I paid $2.50 more for a small handful of french fries that definitely there was not enough for any sharing. We also ordered two hot chocolates $3 each. One would think for that price you could at just get one refill, nope not here. Again so over priced! We both were so hoping for a nice lunch, but walked away paying $36 for two people, receiving terrible food and wishing we wouldve gone some place else. So disappointed!!!
Not bad looking, and a nice outdoor seating area, but the food was mediocre: Chicken breast, Shrimp, and Garlic Mashed Potatoes on Asparagus spears: chicken was tough, shrimp was good, mashed potatoes were tepid, and the asparagus stems were too hard to chew, only the tips were edible. Cheesecake for dessert was good. Might go back if in town.
My daughter and I had excellent grilled burgers, fries, house salad. I had coffee as I was driving,,she had good drinks,,it was a one I didnt grow up with,,so,,Im thinking everything we had was great,, atmosphere as well,,right on the river. We definitely need to return when we are back in the area.
Have experienced this delightful place on the river twice now and it is well worth the 45 minute drive for me. Varied, creative menu, some uniquely delicious cocktails, friendly, knowledgeable wait staff and a wonderful Happy Hour. Bonus if its warm and you can score a patio seat.
Great food, decent prices and friendly staff. Like all of Gilmores restaurants they have a great selection of beers and other alcoholic drinks. The outdoor seating right by the river is very nice. With it being in the heart of lowell its a great spot to people watch and take in the area. Highly recommended. Just be ready for a bit of a wait during peak hours as it is popular, but for a reason.
Updated 9/18. I ordered the goat cheese and fennel sausage pizza and it was stacked. It tasted wonderful and I could only eat half so got to save the rest for later! Much improved.- JohnI used to love the wood fired pizzas here when they opened. Now they are 10-20% of the size of what they used to be. Just a thin little crunchy pie with inedible crust. They were an inch thick. Now 3/16 or less.Back in the day I got these wonderful Chicken Pesto pizzas with artichoke hearts, pine nuts, sundried tomatoes, roasted garlic, and lots of pesto. now, chicken, onions, and almost enough pesto to taste it but not quite.Maybe their dinners are better, I just like to grab a gourmet pizza and go. Well used to be gourmet.
The food was pretty bland, pop was watered down.. waiter didnt even give me a straw.. or ask if I wanted one... (I dont know how well glasses are washed anywhere.. so I will always use a straw) the bread was served with what was supposed to be a garlic dipping oil of sorts... couldnt taste any garlic nor salt. Same with my chicken alfredo... hardly any garlic and tasted like there was zero salt in it... the chicken didnt taste like it had any flavor to it either.. great atmosphere.. people were nice, but the food was lacking, and on the expensive side for the size of the portions...
Flat River grill is an amazing place to dine. My friend wanted to treat me to lunch and it was a good choice. As part of the Gilmore group of restaurants, Flat River Grill has an intriguing menu with both familiar and not so familiar dishes. I chose the Reuben Sandwich. It was big, it was tasty, it was just right. The chef got the ingredients in a nice proportion to each other. If you want to enjoy lunch or dinner, choosing this place will give you something to remember!
My husband and I planned a late dinner date night, got a sitter, got cleaned up and feeling pretty! We chose to head to our old hometown to catch dinner at the flat river grill. So we drove the 45 minutes to the restaurant. According to their hours of operation listed on google, they are open until 10pm. We arrived at 8:50 to find the doors locked and “new” winter hours posted saying they closed at 9! Being a fellow business owner, I know that with a literal minute of spare time they could update their hours on google, and it probably would have taken less time than typing the paper, put in a frame, and hanging on their door.
Stopped for lunch on our way back from a business meeting, not from this area, but were very pleased. Ordered the special salad of the day (Asian glazes chicken breast on top of spinach with avocado) and it was excellent. I bet the outdoor dining is great in the summer time!
One of the locally well known Gilmore collection of restaurants. The Flat River Grill has an excellent menu and professional staff. Ive always enjoyed the food at all of the Gilmore restaurants. This location has the added bonus of sitting right next to the Flat River in downtown Lowell. Summertime dining in the outdoor area next to the river is quite nice.
Food was amazing, server was young and not very knowledgeable about booze, but still good. My boyfriend got a create your own pizza and I got a turkey club. They were both fabulous. I got the featured pineapple margarita. He got a vodka and tonic double tall. The server was confused as to what his drink was, but it arrived to him correctly. Thats all that matters. The night was great, food came out without a hitch.
This place is GREAT! We live in Lowell and theres no better dining here. The food is unique and reasonably priced. Weve eaten here 15-20 times and have never had bad food or a bad experience. These other reviews rating this place 1 star are most likely from folks that are impossible to please!Keep up the good work!
Went here with a group from our church. My wife and I split pizza. Would not recommend it. Restaurant was nice and probably worth a second chance, but dont get the pizza. It was not good.Ratings 1-5Food: 1.5 (atleast for the pizza other entrees looked good).Service: 4Atmosphere: 3.5
Fabulous service, quality ingredients, and beautiful environment. Call ahead suggested, wait times on weekends can be 20min+. Whole food and Organic options. Friendly staff, wonderful recommendations on food, and a new favorite of mine for a fabulous Filet minion (wood stoked grill).
Service was not up to par. Our server (Chris) was not able to keep up. We had to repeatedly ask for beverages, she missed an app order and at one point one person in our party had to leave the table to seek her out. Then there was the food. Half of the dishes brought to the table were cold. I had the risotto feature which was mediocre at best. The flank steak was cold and the top was cooked to medium well as reqested but the risotto cooked the bottom of the steak to well. The risotto was undercooked and lacked any distinct flavor -- they all just ran together and tasted excessively earthy. The bright spots were the white chicken chili (excellent) and the pizza is decent. Pricing is excessive for portion size. This was our first visit and will be our last. (Full disclosure -- the restaurant was busy. We were here on Saturday at 5:30p)
Our issue was handled by management in a professional and timely manner. They made me feel truly valued as a customer. As returning guests we were really disappointed in our meal tonight. We had tried the Micheal Chicken and asked for the béarnaise sauce on the side. When the food arrived the sauce was on the chicken. I did not speak up because I didn’t want to wait for my meal to be remade while my spouse ate. In addition to the mistake, the asparagus was extremely undercooked and the garlic mashed potatoes were not very warm and lumpy. Disappointed, to say the least because we expect and have had better from Flat River Grill.
We had a great time sitting on the patio with a nice view of the river. The food was good but my quesadilla was overdone and dry. Our server was a bit frazzled so that part wasnt good. I found a bug in my water glass, asked for another, and waited a while. Upon asking for the 3rd time, I finally got my water but no straw. We were never even asked if we wanted something else to drink. Id go back for the atmosphere, order different food, and be sure to get another server.
I dont live in Lowell, but when my in-laws suggest meeting in Lowell for lunch (a nice halfway point for my wife and I to meet them), Im already starting the car. Awesome food, awesome service, and you cant forget that wood fire smell. We almost always start with the pan fried goat cheese, which is perfectly smoky, complementing the atmosphere. From there, anything that takes advantage of the wood fire grill is excellent, whether its a burger or a pizza. You cant go wrong here.
We are aiming for this restaurant as stop point tavelling between Grand Rapids and EL. Nice outdoor sitting area by the river and nice folks running the place. Wood-fired oven pizzas is why we come, also some experimental starters. Good beer on tap. See you soon! BTW, this place is kid-friendly, with its own menu (for people liking that option) and attentive waiters.
Update: If I could, I would give them 3.5 stars. We were regulars here, but not anymore. The quality of food has gone down slightly, and they keep removing items from their menu that we always ordered, such as the calimari, woodfired chicken sandwhich and haystack onions. Also, the quality is hit and miss now. In five years, we sent food back once, maybe twice, but in the past year, we have sent food back on four different occasions due to being burnt. The bright side is that the wait staff as a whole is the best in town. I hope they step up their game and return to the awesome restaurant they once were.First, lets discuss the food. If you want a great appetizer, chicken dish, pizza, or hamburger, this is the place for you. You cant go wrong with any of the options above. In regards to their alfredo and steak, I would steer clear. There are much better choices on the menu. Next, lets dicuss the other important parts of a dining experience. The staff is friendly and helpful, they have a variety of beverage options, and the restuarant is beautiful. In regards to the price, they are a little more expensive in comparison to other places in Lowell, but it is well worth the little extra money that you will pay because they have some delicious options for meals. Lastly, I would recommend visiting this restaurant during the weekdays because they tend to be busy on the weekends and you will have to wait for a table at peek times on the weekend.
First impressions, not too impressed. Not very friendly. Too loud. Long wait for food. We were not fond of the pretzel bun/turkey sandwich we ordered. It was small, and had to much horse-raddish flavored sauce, and was well over priced and we had to pay $2.00 each order for French fries instead of the potato chips that accompanied it. This was for lunch. We will not be returning.
We dined at your restaurant late this afternoon. I ordered calamari for an appetizer. It was like trying to chew on rubber. I really enjoy good calamari. Two of the four in our party had never tried calamari before. What an impression that left on them. My Corned Beef Reuben was luke warm when it was served. We were seated outside per our request. The flies were REALLY bad. Its not something I would expect to deal with at a Gilmore property or any restaurant. Our service was less than stellar. I had to wait a long time for my water to be refilled. Half way through our meal, a large party was seated outside near us. Our server was assigned to take care on them also. One of our party asked for their leftovers to be boxed. That request was ignored. Only 1 of 3 checks were brought to our table. Another server had to take over in her absence.Weve been to many different Gilmore properties in the past. This was a surprisingly off the mark experience.
As with any Gilmore restaurant the food it amazing. Really great pizza and sandwiches with delicious flavor combinations. The service can be pretty slow, but I feel like it has gotten quicker the last few times Ive been there. It would be nice if they took reservations.
Well be aware to start that this is part of the Gilmore Collection of restaurants. I found the server to be a little rude that greeted us with a we closed already...tone says slot there ladies as well as folding your hands together and talking with them like we cant understand...sorry have a great night. So no... you were not infact closed. It was 10 til and we were not trying to get food. We went for a walk around town by the river and wanted to warm up and have a quick drink and be on our way.... unfortunately that didnt happen...so we went elsewhere....Larkins....been there forever and always accommodating...so no I will not go back because of that right there. It was quite cold and they were very unwelcoming.
I had the very tasty cream of mushroom soup and yummy grilled cheese sandwich. My daughter had the flank steak salad, and substituted seared tuna. It was delish! My husband had the cheese quesadilla and enjoyed it. Quaint place, great menu, and friendly service. Well be back!
Beautiful yet cozy atmosphere inside. The patio offers an uplifting dining experience with a full view of Gods glorious creation where you can either enjoy the sun, sites and river or get out of the sun and still enjoy the refreshing breeze coming off the Flat River. We started with the Artichoke and Arugula Dip served with swiss cheese, flat bread and bright red tortilla chips. +A. Very satisfying and tastey. Almost a meal in itself.Their new Turkey Bacon Melt sandwich on a pretzel bun was moist, delicious, crisp and refreshing as was the perfect, in season, Fresh Fruit we chose instead of fries. +ASharing a meal is perfect on warm Sun day afternoons!
Atmosphere is great. Started with pan fried goat cheese appetizer, melt in your mouth, delicious. We had the wood fired Faroe Salmon and Cob Salad with Pan Seared Shrimp. So creative and delicuois. We have traveled the world and Flat River Grill is at the level with the best restaraunts we have had the opportunity to enjoy.
My boyfriend and his family introduced me to this place about a year ago, at first I loved it. Good food, relaxing atmosphere, and typically good service. The last time we went there a couple months ago, we had a horrible experience here. There was a wait for a table which was fine, at first the host told us 10-15 minutes. After 15 minutes of sitting outside waiting for a table, we went inside to check on our table and the host then told us itd be another 45 minutes! It ended up only being another 20 or so, but the problems continued... Our server took forever to greet us, bring drinks and our appetizer took about 20 minutes to get to our table once we had ordered it. Our food took about 40 minutes. We ordered the Spinach Dip for an appetizer which was very good. When we got our food everything seemed okay, but as I was about to finish the last bite of my chicken sandwich, I looked down and realized the entire inside of my sandwich was RAW. Incredibly Gross! Our server came to the table to see how everything had been and I pointed out the uncooked chicken to her. She hardly even said anything, just took it away. She did take the sandwich off our tab, however she never even appologized for it and a manager never came to appologize to us either. Needless to say, this one bad experience ruined one of our favorite restaurants and we have not been back since nor do we plan on ever coming back. I attempted to find a way to get in contact with the Gilmores about this when it first happened but could not find an email on their website.
Great food, great staff that has been working there for a long time. Very popular local spot. Facility under-sized and you may wind up outside on a patio heated by propane burners with drop down plastic panels or one of the many booths along the kitchen food line with servers always crowding next to your booth.
Me and my wife decided to go here for our 3rd anniversary and it was a horrible experience. Not only did we wait almost 15 minutes before we even got a waiter to ask us what we wanted to drink but the service was horrible. It was not even at a busy time but our waitor got one other table sat with 5 elderly people and apparently decided they were more important. He was quick to help them and get to there table and refill there drinks. We waited almost 45 minutes to get our food and when we got it the food was cold and wasnt even fully cooked. Our kids didnt even want to eat it. We only got one drink the waitor never came back to ask for a refill and we watched as 5 or 6 other employees were talking and laughing with each other instead of checking on customers to see if they needed anything. I can understand if they were busy but there were maybe 6 or 7 tables in the entire place. We dont get to go out often so because it was our anniversary we wanted to do something nice as a family but it was a total disappointment.

2022-03-25I had the grilled cheese with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was pretty good, but the sweet potato were really good. I also had crème brûlée for dessert. It had been a long while since I had crème brûlée, and it was quite satisfying.

2022-06-24This place was phenomenal! They have a wide variety of options, everything we ordered was prepared to perfection. The drink selection was superb as well. The atmosphere in and even nearby this place was so warm and inviting. There was a slight wait to get in, but i understand why!

2022-02-04We live in the area so this place is always our go to. Sometimes the kitchen can be slow, but our waiters are always attentive and kind and make sure we know the status of our food. Regardless of that, our meals are always fantastic! We especially love the Honey & Black Pepper Beef Brisket, the pizzas, Peruvian Burrito, the flat bread appetizer and the Cobb salad. We love everything else, but those are our favorites!

2022-03-23Food took quite a long time to get to us but our server was great. She paid attention to us and made sure we had drinks when they were low. The food was great as well. I had a wood fired oven pizza and my datevhsd the champagne chicken and thought it was great as well. I would definitely go back. I just think the food was slow due to it being St. Patricks day.

2021-11-19Food was great, honestly very impressive! Service was initially slow, which the kids were not liking at all (hungry littles), but they made a huge effort to make the rest of our experience amazing. Would come back if we are in the area! A+

2020-09-28The patio on the river was beautiful, and the tables well spaced. Service was great. The food was a higher quality then we have had in some time. We had the wood fired flat bread for an appetizer, we loved the sweet and salty flavor. I had the two o two salad and my husband had the honey and black pepper brisket. For dessert, we split a skillet brownie. So good!! We will certainly be back!

2022-04-25Neat little spot right on the river downtown. Heated outdoor dining area with a good view of the showboat and mainstreet. Bathrooms are clean. The general noise level tends to stay at a manageable level throughout the night. Food is great and they have some unique options to try.

2022-06-27This is one of our favorite places to eat at in Lowell. The goat cheese spread is a great appetizer and their wood fired pizza is 2nd to none. Always friendly wait staff and patio seating looking at the river makes for a lovely date night.
