I absolutely love going to this place I have gotten nearly 40 records from this store mostly used and some new. Every record I get comes with a guarantee of about 14 days I believe to return if there is an issue with playback. All of the used records I have purchased, at a very reasonable and inexpensive price I may add have played amazingly. Even the old 78s I got play quite well. I have not had to return a record yet! They are very helpful in finding what You want or leading you to something you may want but don’t know about I recommend this place anytime, any day! Definitely will be coming back here! Records are clean and in great condition per my photos
Great shop has some weird quirks though. Basically every record is on sale having the regular price and the sale price on the LPs. I get it though makes people think there getting a better deal. As far as price though its fair compared to other shops in the area. The shop its self is pretty beat up but its been there for along time. Cleaning and fixing up some stuff wouldnt hurt presentation is important. The biggest disappointment is the owner, he has one of the biggest egos I have ever seen. If there was show like Hells kitchen but for record stores this shop would be the first stop for sure. It rubs off on some of the employees as well which is a shame. One of the first times I stopped in and mentioned it was my first time in the shop and said I usually shopped at found sound (love you found sound) the employee mentioned how dark it is in there talking down to the shop. Ive found some gems here for sure but, customer service is key and thats what lacks here big time.
Perhaps they should call themselves Chyrysalis records since they will be flying away from their slumlord shell on the Feast of Stephen. The place is an institution, I have bought two turntables (but no microphone and no Beck as he is bad and anathema) and records, cds, t shirts, tapestries, posters, knick knacks, incense (no peppermints), videos and a gargoyle candle holder whose eyes glow with the flame. Follow them to the terrestrial paradise that is Berkley. All hail Flipside. I have gotten Haydn, Johnny Guitar Watson and Red Fang there to give some idea of the scope of the merchandise.
Thought this was a cool store but completely got ripped off. Bought import CDs thinking they were real but they were CDRs with handwriting on the blank CD. And the covers were just picture printouts. Why even sell these and say No returns?Ripping people off is not cool. Buyer beware if youre buying an Import CD there. Its not real. Lost $70 for nothing.
Nice people and well versed. Thanks for John taking the time to explain his price points when I was selling my old viynl Collection. Nice guy and nice store. Im a veteran and he made a point to thank me and explain why he appreciates the military. He also has some real friendly dogs lying around the back of the shop. 😀
I love this record shop. Its one of the few around anymore. My only complaint is that they dont stock music that is international, though they have a good mainstream selection. Also the guys running the shop will try to find you any record that is not in stock, and have it to you within days. Great and friendly.
A generally great record shop. Like all great record shops, they offer a very diverse selection of additional pop culture ephemera beyond literal records. Plenty of nostalgia to dig through. Sort of like a weekend record or toy show except in a regular store setting. Some items can be priced a little higher than average but its typically only new cds that are like that. The resale items seem fairly priced. They also offer a good selection of local music which is extra important in a region like Detroits.
The staff was helpful but didnt seem approachable. The selection was great considering there are not many record stores. Their pricing is all over the place and e as well but you can find some pretty good cheap stuff. Other than that, the atmosphere in here was great. I can see how people spend hours in here.
Not only is the selection great, but I was recently in and their Dog greeted me :) One of the staff engaged me in conversation about the dogs origins. I have been suffering with clinical drepression for about 5 years and rarely get out other then work, so it was extremely nice for him to go out of his way to talk to me it made my day. thank youLove the owner very kind, clean, most machines work, just very hot, but it is a laundry mat after all
Flipside has a great selection of vinyl and CDs. When walking in you get a nice warm welcome and numerous staff members willing to help. The owner is friendly and always willing to play a record for you. I have also noticed they have very competitive pricing. This shop is definitely worth checking out for anyone interested in music or even vintage games.
As Long As Im Living, I Will Never Set Foot In That Record Store Again. You Should Of Saw How They Looked At Me When I Walked In The Store And How They Were Watching Me While I Was Looking Through The Records... My First Thought Was To Walk Up To The Counter And Sit My License And Both Of My American Express Cards On The Counter And Tell Them You Dont Have To Worry About Me Stealing Any Of Your Horrible Condition Vinyl. But Instead I Looked At Them And Walked Out The Door. I Dont Spend My Money Where Im Not Wanted
Absolutely love coming here and flipping through their collection and adding to my own. It is such a warm and inviting place, the staff is extremely helpful and patient with anyone who has questions. Its never crowded but there is always someone inside. You can get collectables, vinyls, turn tables, and flipside merchandise. Would absolutely recommend that anyone comes here and bring a friend.
Flipside is the most authentic, colorful record shop Ive ever been to! Ill go in for a single record but cant help spending hours upon hours there! And even then, I still wont want to leave! Theyve got everything you need, great service, aand a truly genuine, awesome owner... Its a one of a kind gem.
This is a great record store and Ive been to many. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. They have been there for over 30 years which means they must be doing something right. If they do not have what youre looking for they do their best to order it. Definitely worth a visit :)
Ive enjoyed coming here for years. They have so much in this store from when I was a kid and beyond. I take my kids in here to show them what I had when I was young; VHS player where you had to have a separate machine to rewind the tape and game cartidges as big as their faces. I go in here sometimes by myself just to stand amongst the entertainment of yesteryear and enjoy the nostalgia. It feels like a classic record store mixed with a flea market vendor. TONS of vinyls and just about everything else you can think of that preoccupied your mind back in the day. If youre looking for an old record, video game or just want to take a step back and remember what things were like I would suggest you stop in here.
Good selection for the prices and if they dont have it theyre always willing to order it at least in my experience. As for rerelesed titles like sublime the prices are almost offensive even after record day. On a better note you can walk out of this place with some great records for almost a steal bands like Santana,ETC...the video game section will definitely satisfy your retro needs in a pinch. After your vinyl throwback shopping spree you can head right next door to noble fish and have some of the best sushi youve ever eaten. Overall Id say its worth your time to drop in.
If I could give this store zero stars I would. I have never been treated so poorly in my life. I walked around the store for ten minutes and found a Nintendo I wanted to look at. The register is located in the back of the store, so I made my way back there and waited a few minutes for customers to clear out. When it was my turn I asked to see the Nintendo. The cashier from the store on 7/25/2016 around 5pm replies, I THINK YOU GUYS SHOULD LEAVE. For ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. I have never been so insulted in my life. My friend and I are minorities, and I am not sure if this is why we were kicked out. All I can say is that we were asked to leave for no reason, and I have never felt so degraded in my life. THANKS FLIPSIDE RECORDS for making customers feel welcome.
Came in to sell some stuff and the old guy working was super rude. I walk in and he just stared at me waiting for me to say something to him rather than greeting me. Had an attitude like I was bothering him or something and was just rude from the second I walked in. I get it we all have our days but come on man. Safe to say i’ll never go back there. Most expensive prices around anyways.
Always a fun store, and they seem to have survived the shift from CDs being a mass market product rather well by sticking to indie and genre roots (in vinyl and CD). They carry a lot of toys, memorabilia, and vintage videogames without having lost their character as a record store which is a balance some stores havent done well. A Clawson must-see when youre in or near town.
Quite possibly one of the worst experiences Ive ever had dealing with a store!! The owner, Todd, is extremely arrogant and has one of the worse attitudes of any business owner Ive ever had the displeasure of dealing with. While the staff is a little better you can definitely see how Todd rubs off on those he employs. A lot of garbage at this store but you may be lucky to find a hidden gem if you try. DO NOT waste your time dealing with Todd with any sale. He gets bent out of shape easily and will actually start fighting with you! The store was handed down to him and I remember dealing with the father years ago....definitely different experience than today. Go to Warp 9 across the street for memorabilia stuff and buy your vinyl online but I definitely recommended avoiding Todd and his failing business!!
Used to be a faithful customer, my boyfriend spent $600 dollars on used vinyls and got a gift recept for them for christmas, i went to return a few of them that i never opened and got nothing but attitude A D problems. We go here and drop decent money every other month, was speechless to why i was being treated like a criminal. GO TO FYE OR 2ND CHARLES THEIR PRICES ARE ALL CHEAPER.
Its a record store. Its a game shop. Its a toy shop. Its a head shop. This place has it all. Unfortunately, that means that the selection suffers a little, but on the flipside, the selection is nicely curated and skips a lot of the trash at a larger or more focused shop. Unfortunately, that curation seems to drive the prices up a bit, as eberything seems slightly higher priced than it should be compared to elsewhere. However, the clearance items are much more fairly priced and are actually quite good deals, and because of the inventory curating, seem to be more interesting than other bargain bins.
Im a vinyl album collector I listen to a lot of classic rock. They seem to have what I need and its in pretty good condition and the prices are reasonable. I recently picked up two of princes albums I couldnt believe they were still there and not purchased already. Also I collect Rock memorabilia and picked up a rare find book of ACDC
I found an item there I wanted to buy so I asked if the price marked was the best price? Salesman proceeded to look the item up on Ebay and said Oh, this is worth a lot more than we are asking and then raised the price by $30.Totally heartbreaking. Never stepping foot in that place again.
Ive been going to this place ever since I started buying vinyl and Ill tell you what I wouldnt go any place else they make it up for being nice and helpful even though they are a bit expensive I will definitely be going here again and definitely give this place five stars
Update went back to sell some Records to them, they did give me a fair price on a few that I showed them the first time, went back it I my car and grabbed another more rare and hard to get stack ,offered me 2-3$ on each of them, they had a older Asian man there, going through my stuff before they had a chance to look at it,this guy said he is a friend of the owner offered me $3 For a 250.00 album, advice to owner keep this guy away from your customers, lost a customer because of him.Dearborn Music is the place to go,nicer people and more honest.
Went to purchase a copy of To Pimp a Butterfly here, staff was friendly at the time, helpful and observant. Organization is a little iffy but its not the worst Ive ever seen. Got sold a record with an manufacturingerror (warped 180g) and emailed the business. They seemed very understanding about it and ensured me that their records have a 30 day money back guarantee. We went to return the record and the attendant was making a fuss about our return like we were essentially robbing him of money, and complained that it was open.Sealed records have their record stored in the paper sleeve facing upright so they do not fall out or cut the shrink wrap sealing he record. The record I got was warped and I couldnt have known otherwise without looking. He than complained that he cant make his money back because it was opened, which if he is selling a defective product he should be obligated to take it back, and just made the whole ordeal harder than it had to be. Eventually, his attitude was unbearable and we just pressed for a refund. His final retort towards my father was Im the one whos getting pimped around hereWe wont be coming back. UHF (Royal Oak), Found Sound (Ferndale), Hello Records (Detroit) and Dearborn Music (Dearborn) have better prices and selection. Avoid at all costs.
A very cool record store. Obviously the big draw is the music. A massive selection of CDs and movies, most are well priced. The other draw is the crazy old toys and action figures. if your looking to be surprised with a blast from the past, walk in and find a NES on their shelf and a starwars action figure from that has to be from the 80s. this place is pretty cool.
Best record store I ever been to they had more records I want then any other place I been to, and the staff were great even though I came in when they were closing I wish I could give you ten stars found the brewer Shipley record I been searching for for cheaper then expected, thank you for the great service and atmosphere
Not a fan of this place. When I went in there, they seemed too busy to help me. Too busy? Too busy sitting on their rears, because I was the only one in there. Lazy, unfriendly and inattentive comes to mind when I think of the staff at Flipside. Ill go somewhere else next time.
Owner and workers here has an obnoxious negative attitude as youre greeted with glares when you first walk in. They might as well have a sign saying Yur kind is not welcomed hur. Well never coming here again which is probably what they wanted. Walk in at your own risk. You have been warned!
Went in looking at comics books, got told 15 mins til closing, 1 min later we were asked to checkout and got nothing but attitude from both the guy and girl behind the counter...i said id give them $10 for $5 in books i picked out so they dont have to look each up individually on ebay (lmfao) and they proceeded to be even ruder...terrible attitudes, terrible service, NEVER RETURNING!!!

2022-06-14The Staff carefully looked at each LP album and picked the ones that were in excellent condition. These albums could be a part of their inventory. The staff was very helpful.

2020-11-28A local family favorite for decades!A warm wonderful greeting when you walked through the front door by two beautiful puppies. I love this!A huge selection of vintage albums, youre sure to find something. My problem is when I come here I find too many things I want to buy.

2021-09-07Love this place. Not as many DVD specials as 10 years ago, but there are always great deals on used cd’s. There’s also plenty of vinyl. Still some video game stuff too as well as incense and other items. For an independent store, their new music is competitively priced. I also find plenty of electronic music here too. Also, they care about the community and wear masks. Hope they stay in business for a long time and wish the best on their location move.

2021-12-28Its ok , stopped in real quick hoping to find used albums, which they do have but they have a lot of new lps as well. the stock seemed disorganized with various figurines and other items mixed in on the wall and display cases. if was a difficult store to browse in because of the setup

2021-12-15Found something I had been looking for as a gift. It was on sale for $1 less than priced. Alright selection. The person working the register seemed to be genuinely afraid of me. Also, who has a carpeted floor with dogs in the building?

2022-01-21Walked in looking for a particular record, immediately girl #1 said “we close in 10 minutes” followed by girl #2 saying “actually 5 minutes” I said no problem I know what I’d like to buy. Then shlubby guy says “were closing up, I’m not trying to kick you out, but I kind of am”. Very rude, found the album on Amazon for cheaper anyway.

2021-02-02Ive been shopping here for 30+ years. Great selection of the obscure, imports, and non-mainstream products.Music, games, movies, toys, and more.I like the fact that it isnt a pristine cookie cutter store. I love the dogs; so what if there are some dog toys laying around?!The staff has been nothing but helpful to me and I appreciate being able to browse without a see anything you like every 2 minutes. When I have a question, they are responsive and nice. This store represents a segment of retail that is fading FAST, and we should do more to support local non-corporate businesses.
