I’ve been here previously a few years ago and it was great this time it was complete opposite. They weren’t properly staffed for the dinner rush. The staff was friendly I’ll give them that the waiter was great also. Here’s the problem we made reservations 2 days prior and I guess they just didn’t write it down we even had proof on the phone that we had called. So we waited for literally 2 hours to be seated then another 45-50 minutes before the chef got to our table. The food tasted good but the chef didn’t put on much of a show. I was pretty sure that for the price dessert would be included but they did not bring any of our table dessert and they seemed to be trying to rush us out. There was a thunder storm while we were there which caused multiple leaks all throughout the restaurant. The bathrooms were nasty and again for the price the restaurant altogether looked rough. I’m disappointed. I always loved that place but I’m definitely not going back again. Such a shame.
I brought my family for dinner this evening, we come in to genji quite a bit and always enjoy courtney as our server. No matter how busy she is she always tends to our needs whether she’s in the middle of a rush or not even our server as we have seen her do for many other tables. It was to my distaste tonight when courtney was ripped from our table to tend to her manager screaming profanity at her. Weve been coming here for years and this manager is by far the worst, shes careless, inattentive and has had an attitude with my family and I multiple times. I’m not sure what exactly is going on but no one deserves to be exclaimed at in such manner, especially such a hard worker.
This was my very first visit to Genjis Steak House and I fell in love with the place. The have a full bar, serving all types of drinks, they have some Japanese specials too. We went for the Hibachi. The chef cooked in front of us, displaying their art with the knives, which was fun to witness.Food was over the top! I loved the taste, the ambience and everything about it!
We ate here on February 8th 2022 for my husbands 45th birthday and my daughters boyfriends 17th we were the only table in the restaurant as the just opened up before we got there..The Chef was amazing did tricks with the eggs sliding down the Spatula..he even sang Happy Birthday to the birthday boys it was awesome...he did all kinds of tricks trying to get my daughters boyfriend to catch a carrot in his mouth in which he missed...than when he cooked the rice he wrote a 45 and a 17 on it with the sauce it was awesome they really enjoyed and it was my daughters boyfriends first time at a Hibachi grill...Thank you for an awesome experience
Excellent time at Genjis.Lunch was a very nice time, our waiter, Andres Drew B, was superb, polite and attentive but not overbearing. The food was excellent, kudos to the kitchen staff. It was a very nice celebration for my birthday. I hope more people will go to Genji and have lunch or dinner there. It was well worth the money. Everything was very clean and the food was hot, fresh and very tasty!
This place has really gone down hill. The salad was wilted with way to much dressing. The soup was just broth because thats all they had and we werent informed that till they were setting it on our table, and the onion soup tasted burnt. The sushi was half hazardously assembled and didnt taste well (we left all but the two pieces we each ate on the table). I ordered an old fashioned and it had more pulp in it then my orange juice does. Finally I ordered the stake and chicken hibachi and asked for the steak medium and it came a lot closer to well.
This place is unbelievably terrible! Seriously! Do not ever bother doing business here! My Mother and I hired Genji to Cater an event. They agreed to do it and said they would deliver the food to the venue at 5 and the delivery fee was $20. No problem. The Manager even called the night before to confirm the delivery. They said that we would just pay for everything upon delivery the next day. Literally 24 hours later the event happens and Genji is a no-call no-show. Our Guests were expecting Asian food at 5 and we were all excited about it! Genji left all of us disappointed in their deplorable customer service! I guess you guys didn’t want to make $400?! I called and was given the run-around by every single Staff member. One that picked up the phone (a female) tried to claim you guys didn’t do Catering and that you don’t deliver and only do Doordash. Are you serious?! I asked to be connected to the Manager twice and each time the line was connected but no one would pick up the phone. I could only hear customers ordering food. Unbelievable! I will never set foot in this place again!
I used to go her as a child and remember it so fondly. Unfortunately the magic definitely was not there during my most recent trip. The food was extremely bland and the cook was morose and stagnant, not the entertainment I recall. The waitress was very sweet though so I definitely give a star just for her.
It is one of the best meals I ever had in my life do recommend to anyone and if you order shrimp on the kids menu you can hear a cool little sizzle while it’s cooking. The sushi is delicious the steak and chicken is good as we. I recommend it to anyone who likes seafood or steaks. Service was amazing always go when you are hungry and you are in the area.
Place went downhill from when I was there a few years ago! I called made a reservation couple of days before we went there to eat they said that they dont have a reservation under my name! I told them I called and gave the woman a day and time when we will be there she said she put us down for that day got there no reservation for us then they said we dont do reservations then I showed them proof that I called the restaurant! It took a long time to get a table! The bathroom was disgusting dirty and smelling and the managers werent even dressed professionally! It also took a long time to get our food! The ceiling was leaking water where we were sitting! It felt like we were being rushed to eat! We had a great waiter though. Bad experience eating there so sad 😞
They don’t even deserve a star. They deserve to have BRAND NEW waitresses because obviously the ones that they have do not know how to communicate or properly place orders for people. Told me my food was gonna get cooked in the back. It was supposed to be cooked in front of me. Had my family of 7 eat before me. Never got my food the whole time I was there until I complained and told them TO CANCEL the order. They still never cancelled it. They gave it to me for free. Point of this is. I SAT THERE FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF WITH NO FOOD WHILE MY FAMILY ATE. I don’t care if the food was FREE. I didn’t get to EAT WHEN I WANTED. then they also messed up on my moms order. Forgot our sushi. Almost forgot to bring my brothers food as well. WORST SERVICE EVER. AND IT WAS MY FIRST TIME THERE. NEVER AGAIN WILL I COME.
Ive been here several times, Unfortunately the last trip was the absolute last before my daughter in law talked me into giving it one more chance!!! Im so glad I did!!! We went in for lunch and Michelle was our server what a pleasant atmosphere and server!!! We sat in a different room not at the grill and I could see the sushi bar!!! Such elegance as I dont know whats changed but Im leaving so happy Id give Michelle 20 stars if possible I will be back
My family and I have been going to genjis for many many years and it was always a very wonderful experience felt it was worth the price and distance we travel to go there. Went this evening and probably will not be returning extreme disappointment everything blamed on covid lack of staffing ,reason you no longer get dessert with dinner the higher prices all meals were at least 6-7 $ more ,long wait time and now due to covid if you have a party of 4 they automatically put on 18% tip (if they would have let me decide my tip I always try to leave at least 20%) but dont like someone telling me what Im going to pay for poor service and they have let the building become pretty rundown ,restroom was not clean, in area we were sitting 4 different groups received incorrect food orders or incorrect check amount ,overall it was a disappointing experience
The food here is simply amazing. Dinner prices are a bit steep but lunch prices are great. Love the chicken and steak. Love the rice and veggies. Cool show when they cook for you. Been here many times, always great staff.Only negative I may give genjis, is the building needs some maintenance...Overall, we will definently be back.
We went there for my daughters 16 birthday. Have been there many times. The chef was absolutely horrible. Asked us several times what we ordered. Gave the wrong food to everyone. Didnt do any tricks. The prices have increased and the food went down. You no longer get the complimentary sherbet nor a piece of special dessert. If you have a group of four or more you are charged 18% gratuity. It cost us $279.00 for a family of six. Love the food but wont be back anytime soon.
Our server was very unprofessional. We had to prompt him to take dishes from the table, we had to ask for refills. Our griller didnt put much of a show on for us, it was as if he was rushed. We werent even offered ice cream at the end of our meal! This was my first time there, and not a good experience overall.
We drive out of our way to go to this location from home we pass one and this one always exceeds our expectations! A last minute late stop we decided for dinner, and we were sat at the last seating time. And we felt no different, not rushed or anything. Perfect, always a 5 star location!
Was just there for lunch it was a disaster from the start. Had to wait a while to be seated and there was nobody even in the restaurant . We finally got sat. Our menus were so dirty with food all over them. Plate had hair on it. Gross. We had to move tables. Alec our waiter was terrible. we had to keep asking him for everything multiple times. A table left too I believe while we were there. Very very unprofessional. Few things that were listed on the menu you guys didn’t have. We didn’t get dessert like the menu said it came with our meal. It was my first time and I was very disappointed I will never be back. The cook was amazing and the food that was the only good things
This place has unfortunately gone downhill in the past year or so. I ate here on 5/9/21. We had a reservation but werent taken to a table until 25 minutes after the reservation time, and were not acknowledged by a server until at least 15 minutes after that. We overheard the table next to eventually complain to the server about how long everything was taking, and the server said the dishwasher had quit that day so everyone was scrambling. Given that the hosts and server knew about that issue, they couldve told us in advance that service may be a bit slow and we totally wouldve understood. But to not even acknowledge the delay and expect us to not notice or question it was not the best way to handle that.Additionally, our table, as well as all of the other tables around us, had to ask for yum yum sauce to be brought to the table, which Ive never had to ask for before. Finally, the restrooms were closed, which was less than ideal. Luckily the food was good, but the experience itself left a bit to be desired.
This is the worst hibachi restaurant i have ever been to and i will never be back,it is my wifes 30th birthday we had reservations for 5:30 pm it is now 7:12 and still no cooks at our tables,we have a party of eleven btw, almost every plate had food on it which is so disgusting,we have other things to do and this is just plain ridoculous!
My husband and I ate at the restaurant tonight. We had a 6:30 reservation, and were not seated until 7. Our servers name was Alec. Our food was good, but everybody in the restaurant (casual dining) kept complaining about the heat. It seemed like their heat was not working. It was very cold in the restaurant and in the bathrooms. There were plastic covers over the vents. So I dont know if their heat was not working or they werent turning it on, but for the people that are dining in they should let them know that. Even the table next to us was saying that their food was getting cold because of how cold it was in the restaurant. Service was very poor. There were a bunch of servers wandering around, but ours seemed very rushed. We got everything at the same time-our drinks, appetizer, sushi, soup and salad, plus meal. Even had to ask for refills a few times. Finally got them when we were paying to leave. Just very unorganized and disappointing Valentines experience. We will not be back for a while.
Good service but the food was unseasoned... and the yum yum sauce is just mayo... not worth $33 for filet mignon that was all cut up (thus dry when served). I assume all of the food comes that way because even the veggies were unseasoned. I still tipped well because the waitress (shannon) was very accommodating. Basically, come if excellent service is what youre looking to pay for.
Not worth it!!!50$For a small steak and small lobster!!!The place smells nasty and dirty..shrimp terriyaki cost 28$ for a cheap shrimp and fried rice..better go to panda house. They charge 18to 25% tip on your bill already without asking u first..lolOverprice for small food..Im not coming back..never!!
Unbelievable... The hostess passed in front of us 3 different times without even acknowledging that we were in front of her. Once we said hello, he said she was tired and said she would be with us soon. We waited 15 mins to get a soup and drinks. Finally got salads after that. Usually they are brought together. Then 40 mins for a chef to come out. Just horrible.
Reservations don’t matter here, staff does not have adequate customer service. Had a reservation for 6pm, it was crowded at the entry and we were not seated until an hour later. Once seated, the hibachi table was dirty and the plates at our seats were dirty as well. Our server, Alec/Alex, did not come to greet us/get drink orders until 30 mins after we’d been seated and waiting. When he finally made an appearance I asked about how long did he think it would be before the chef made it to our table to begin making our food. His response was “I’m not sure, probably about 45 minutes”. Keep in mind, our reservation was for 6pm & it’s now 7:30pm. So we would’ve been waiting an additional 45+ mins for food. Needless to say, we left the restaurant because the service was mediocre at best and the staff did not have it together. I was actually excited to dine here but after that experience I will not be returning. Oh, and for people of color (especially African Americans), they will stare. My date and I were only one of two Black couples there, the rest of the establishment (guests and staff included) were predominantly White. This wasn’t an issue for us obviously, but the unprovoked stares and poor service made the already unpleasant experience 10x more unpleasant.
Genjis has been around for quite some time. The restaurant used to strive for excellence, but that seems to have fallen to the wayside. My last visit was very interesting, a waitress who didnt seem to know much, and gave way too much personal information about herself. The Hibachi grill is always a good choice. The dinner was ok. I ordered appetizers and sushi along with the filet mignon, scallops, and shrimp dinner. Everything basically came out all at once, so it made the experience a bit meh. Gratuity is automatically added to parties of 4 or more, but please keep in mind, the waitress has to tip out a percentage to the bartender, the kitchen, and the hibachi chef. So please tip accordingly.
Unique dining experience with extremely friendly and competent staff.Chefs are very talented cooks and entertainers. Food is great, I have personally dined there several times and held various celebrations and special occasions at the Saginaw location, never been disappointed with any aspect of this restaurant. Prices are slightly higher than most restaurants in its class but well worth it. Overall great dining experience for entire family.
Our waitress was great, was hard for her to get to us at times because she had tables on multiple sides but she was still great at her job. We sat dining side, non-grill, and we received our food and it was barely warm and kind of cool to the touch. I think Ill stick to Hokkaido. Have Genji a try because we havent been here in a while and I think it would of been better if the food was actually warm.
Said lunch takeout would be 20 minutes, it was 45. Soup was lukewarm. They asked what kind of dressing I wanted, I said Ginger and they didnt give me that. I got ranch and Italian. Asked for steamed rice, got fried. I expected prices to go up since the pandemic. $31 is $10 more than I paid a year ago. Too much for lunch.
I went with a large group. Our seating was comfortable and the area where we were steated I could here everyone at the table. Our server was attentive. Our cook was funny and entertaining. The food was standard for a hibachi style grill. Its on the expensive side, but great for a special occasion type meal.
Genji is not what it used to be. The building is run down, when you have a reservation you still have to wait almost an hour and they seat people who walk in after you. Most of the wait staff look like junkies and or not clean. The cooks don’t do the shows anymore, we were told they are not allowed to. The quality of the food has gone way down. Appetizers that should be hot come out cold, the grills are dirty even when you go there when they open. The inside of the building looks like it hasn’t been cleaned or dusted in a very long time. The bathrooms are disgusting and smell rancid. We will not be back and that’s a shame. It used to be fun. Waste of time and money now.
Our chef was amazing and waitress! Food was amazing! The only problem I had this evening was the waiter. The chef asked him to grab us utensils and he said it wasnt his table. Well with COVID the place wasnt packed! He eventually did but it was rude! The waitress was new but she rocked!
Be prepared before going. Stood out side for approx. 10 min after Making reservations. A staff member saw us out side and disregarded us. Banged on the door called 4 times jo answer. Due to covid orders people can not sit together and a family of 4 will be charged 18% because of this. Tried to share food cause I dont eat that much and they told us 15.00 charge for sharing. Soup was Warm! Salad was iceberg lettuce and portions of food (filet, shrimp, scallops) was small. Highly disappointed. Go to Hibatchi on State St. Better quality. Never received desert either. Theres a charge for it!If it wasnt for my husband not wanting to leave cause he was hungry, I would have left! Will not return! Will try to post pictures
Overall love this place, food is great, service is great, if not a bit pricey, but you get a ton of food, my biggest gripe is the building is falling apart and has been for years, its gotten to the point that its getting dangerous to walk on the deck leading into the building because boards and panels are rotting and breaking apart. Shame, because its an other wise awesome place if you feel like really treating yourself.
My husband and I used to love this eating here. The last 2 visits were horrible. Valentines day was the final straw for us. It was disorganized and the dirty restaurant almost spoiled my appetite. The walls near the grill tables were filthy, salt shaker sticky with food, crab shells on the dirty floor and I was finally told there was no pepper in the restaurant after waiting 20 mins. And no more sherbet or ice cream. There were portable heaters and cords stretched across the floors, out-of-order bathroom stalls and no toilet paper in one that was open.
Food and staff are great. The building itself is in need of repairs. I always get the chicken teriyaki when I go here but anything else I get with is is also pretty darn good. The performance of the chef is always a cool thing to look forward to. I wish their website had more to it than it does mostly so I can share when Im treating a friend thats never been there and they can see what theyre signing up for.
I have eaten here once before about 2 years and really loved the food. Recently my experience was different. I ordered tea and got a dirty teacup which was replaced (easy)The soup came extremely coldTasted and looked nothing like the seaweed soup told the waiter and all he said is that he will let the chef know. Our main meal came and my rice had a burnt taste I barely ate. We had to wait a while too for cutlery even after our meals arrived from a different waiter. To be honest I did not enjoy the meals at all. From dirty cup to cold soup to Burnt rice and horribleService. Never again!!! The only thing I really ate was the salad
The food is great. They did away with buzzards so if some takes your reservation you have no way to prove it. Made reservation 3 weeks ago for valentines weekend and ended waiting over an hour to get a table, because we didnt hear our name over a crowded dinning room.
The WORST experience I’ve ever had with Genji’s! I placed an order and spent A LOT of money for takeout and I get home and I’m missing food. Upon my return to the Resturant, the female manager just looked at me and said NOTHING! Did not even acknowledge my presence or the error! She was dismissive and condescending. And to make matters even worst, Eden the manager, did not want to give me her name!I am a faithful customer that always enjoy coming for family dinner or just because it’s Friday! I will not be returning to this establishment.
Went for my daughters birthday and WILL NOT BE BACK anytime soon. They changed menu and its confusing. Prices are not clearly laid out anymore. Charge 18% gratuity for party of 4 or more. Our chef was HORRIBLE. Had no idea who ordered what and didnt make enough food (had to have waitress bring more). $47.00 tip and they earned maybe $15 of it. Typically they have a piece of paper with everyones order/specs. Our cook who has chicken? Who has shrimp?. Wasnt busy at all but waitress was very slow to clear our soup & salad bowls. Drink refills..yeah you better not be thirsty. No longer offer the scoop of ice cream nor the birthday dessert. BUT they will bring you two greasy cold crab cheese on a plate instead.
Drove 45 minutes to Saginaw to have a nice dinner with my husband. Checked on your website, shows you guys are currently open and its 2 hours before closing.Upon arrival we see cars in the parking lot and people eating inside, but the front doors are locked. Seeing workers look at us through the door but never came to adress us. Nobody is answering your phone. You need have more communication with your customers. This was a waste of our time.
Service was very very slow. Initially came to table quickly but took forever to bring 1st round of drinks, and when one of the bottles of wine we ordered wasnt available it took another 15 minutes for her to bring the replacement bottle. Grilled food was very good but not timed well, first persons getting their prime rib were almost done with their meals by the time the last person got their salmon.
Everything was ok and heres why... We made reservations and had to wait like everyone else for a table (No problem). But then once we were seated and placed a drink order we sat for a solid 12 minutes before they came out with the soups and salads. Then everyone around the grille had finished their appetizers and waited an extra 10 minites before our chef even came out to start preparing the habachi dinners. So bottom line youre gonna have to set a good chunk of time aside for dinner, and thats the end of the bad news. Once our chef arrived the rest of the experience was good. The chef was polite, the food was tasty and bountiful, and we were stuffed.
Made a reservation for 7pm Saturday 2/28 and what a nightmare. I decided to take my friend out to genjis because shes never been there and always wanted to try it. When my date and I arrived there was probably 20-30 people standing waiting to be sat. By 730 we realized that the reservations meant nothing. By 745 we decided to leave since it was already 45 minutes past my reservation. I asked her what she would give them for a rating and she said -10 out of ten. Overall extremely disappointed in how the night at genjis went.
No horrible do not bother Dreadful dining experience I went last time as my daughter-in-law talked me into it and now the server that I had that made me come back is now gone seems like this place lets go more and more people then water does ice I dont understand this servers they decide to keep I seen one nodding out tonight wondering what she was on the other eat it in the back on her phone I will not be back
Awesome staff and great food. The chef we had works at the one in Midland and Saginaw and he was AMAZING! Funny, a great cook, and made a table full of strangers feel comfortable. This is the only Genjis Ive been to where the manager walks around and thanks you for coming, and that the staff interacts with the table not only the guests. I HIGHLY reccomend this place.
It was pretty good. Went here for a company dinner, so luckily I didnt have to pay. Its a bit pricey, but you do get a lot of food and they cook in front of you. I had the chicken and filet mignon. It was good. Our chef Kevin was cool. We werent all about the fancy tricks, but he did his thing and wasnt a jerk.
I dont even know where to start.. so, Ill start from the beginning. Upon arrival I noticed a musty smell but was trying to not be too critical as this was my first time here. We were asked how many in our party and then left to stand with no idea of how long we would be standing and waiting... after about 10-15 min we were directed to our table and this is where is goes down-hill, I pulled out my chair just to greeted by someone elses covid catcher left for me 🤢... after handling that and sitting down, I was disgusted by the lack of cleanliness of the hibachi grill, food stuck on in place ok, its a grill right, I can get over this... then I begin to scan the room and notice that there is a continuous drip of water coming from multiple places in the ceiling 😳 IT WAS DRIPPING on the guy seated with us at the hibachi table 😳 that was it for me! We left before even ordering drinks...Side Note: they do have space heaters throughout to help with the coldness that was addressed in another review...This place needs some serious cleaning and improvements before I would ever consider going back.
Wonderful!!! But if People have reservations, stick with it or tell people you no longer take them. Its come and service first in line!! That would have Been my Family anyway, we were sitting at the Bar at 5:30 NewYearsEve with a 2week prior Reservation as always. Totally shocked on the wait, not seat until at least 8ish. My joke was they wanted people at the bar spending!! How about if they dont come Back?? Especially when they visit year around.
The best part was our chef, Kevin. Tried to order several different drinks and they were out, were told one whole section of the saki they no longer carried yet still on the menu. The rice in the spicy tuna was so sticky, I know its supposed to be but it was like paste. We had a good time all in all but also noticed massive cobwebs everywhere and a very run down building. Plus, made a 7pm reservation and still waited 30 minutes to be seated.
Ordered takeout today, and they said it would be done at 6:40pm, received my food at 7:30 after waiting for 50 minutes, just to find out it was missing items. There were three others who had been waiting for about an hour and the staff was not checking in with anyone and it was nearly impossible to get their attention. Horrible experience that could have been solved if the staff would have communicated anything.
We waited over 30 minutes for our server so we could get drinks. No one ever came. I had to go up to the bar and get a drink. The people I came with never got anything. We waited 15 minutes more and finally just got up and finally left. The guy waiter is horrible and this happened to us the last time we came too.. very disrespectful when workers are walking by looking at us and still never asked if we were helped
They do not honor reservations!! Made reservation 3 weeks in advance for 5:30pm and did not get seated until 6:40pm. Drinks took another 30 min and we did not have cooks until 7:40pm. We had reservations at 8pm at another place. What they took off was 1 appetizer for our inconvenience. Very disappointed in their handling of this.
To start it off the hostess was horribly rude even tho we made reservations but acted like we was some how inconveniencing her, had to ask for flatware after they served us the salad, the waitress was good, chef was alright but almost smacking my friend in the face with his spatula coming out of his hand, for the price of the food it was 90% rice and then they automatically add gratuity onto your bill at 18%, won’t be coming back here so we don’t put out the hostess ever again, way overpriced don’t waste your time
Disastrous sweetest day dinner/dessert! Waited 30 minutes for a table, 10 minutes to receive a water and a Pepsi, another 10 minutes for salad and soup that was now cold. The portions of vegetables and rice were very small, and the main thing I was looking forward to was dessert which THEY WERE COMPLETELY OUT OF!! Nobody mentioned at any point that your $33 steak dinner no longer includes dessert like the menu you’re reading says. And of course they didn’t Offer to deduct it from the price. So, $75 for 2 salads, some cold soup, and an undersized stir fry...happy frickin’ sweetest day! Bye bye Genji!
I been to Genjis quite a few times and I never experienced the experience I did on this time. We made reservations for 7:15p did not get to sit down to eat until 8:45p. When we sat down the plates at the whole table were completely dirty with food on the front and back, silverware as well. Our drinks came pretty quick but no one got refills because the machine just stop making the pop. The chef had absolutely no interaction with us (whole table) and when we were about to go only 3 ppl got ice cream with plastic forks because there wasnt any other choices but the one that was offered. The portion of food everyone got was minimum as well, very minimal. For the price we paid it was not worth it. Moving forward we will be going elsewhere.
We made a reservation online 3 days prior to coming here (Genji’s in Saginaw) and upon arrival we gave our name and told the the guy at the front booth that we had a reservation for 530. The guy wrote my first and last name down. I even told him how to pronounce my name. We were told that there would be a 20 minute wait so we waited. After waiting for over an hour people who were coming after us were called and I went up to the guy and asked how much longer it would be and noticed that my name had already been crossed off. Instead of calling people by their last names they were calling people by their first names and not checking ID’s and people were taking other people’s spot who had a reservation and who had been waiting. After waiting almost 1 hr and 45 min and after c/o and talking with the guy they finally sat us down! Very disappointing to see this happen at a place where you pay quite a bit to eat. Not sure if I will return....
This used to be a place we reserved for special occasions. It has always been fun and the food worth the money. Now days, the people at the front (hostess?) are rude and unfriendly. They act like they are inconvenienced the second you walk in. Made reservations for my husband for his birthday with the whole family. Everyone arrived on time, and they still made us wait. The servers have slipped, and the chefs used to be awesome and funny, now it seems they too have burnt out. The overall appearance of the restaurant is slipping too, faded out awnings outside, and it feels dirty in there...old carpeting, chairs etc.... I would highly suggest a management intervention before you lose your business, it always had great potential but I think you have become complacent and stopped caring about your customers. We make your business successful by coming, treat us like crap well, we will take our business elsewhere.
It was my husband and I first experience at Genjis. We found it to be very over priced! Very small portions of the meats and huge amounts of rice. The meats really were nothing special as far as the flavor either. We had good company with us which is what really made our night enjoyable. Our waitress was awesome as well. Otherwise, we were not too impressed.
Had half of our party there to get seated (party of 4) while the others in our party were on their way running 10 min behind and we had to wait well over a hour just to get a table on a Wednesday night!!. Was told everyone in the party had to be there in order to get seated. We could have gotten seated right away if they didn’t have the rule that everyone needed to be present to be seated. Definitely won’t be coming back here with more than 2 people. Genji should change their policy for small groups and seating.
The food was excellent. I never have a issue with the food there. My steak was cooked perfectly Thanks to I believe his name was Kevin. But the poor management is what Im giving the 1 star for. Who hires a 12 year old for a supervisor. He knew nothing about the business, nor the items on the menu. He was very unprofessional, smelling like cigarettes, his shirt untucked and his hair god awful like he just rolled out of bed. Eyes were glazed over like he was on something. He couldnt even focus his eyes on me. I was confused at first when he came out. Like thinking to myself this has to be a joke. I would have them rethink their options on management. I just could not believe how unprofessional he was and looked. Blows my mind. Who just hires someone that couldnt even tell me the vodka they have. Are they that desperate for a manager cause I could have done a better job. My server she did good. Kind of slow on the refills and removing stuff from our table. I knew she was busy and trying her hardest to keep up. Yum sauce was great as always!! I will reconsider my restaurant picks and order takeout from here.
Havent been there in a while. Food is great but pricey and likely wildly overpriced compared to what youd get cooking it yourself. It seems like they are struggling because they have not remodeled the outside in years, but like the rest of Bay Road is getting seriously run down. This was one of those places for a long time that tended to attract the more well-off people in the area. Id always run into people I didnt like from school which was a big reason I stayed away. Not sure if theyre still coming, but Im doubtful. Wont be surprised when this place shuts down, it has to be coming soon. Last one to leave Saginaw turn the lights out. Sad.
My experience here was really great! I had never sat at a hibachi grill before, and that whole experience and showman ship was really cool. We got there in time for the early bird special which was a really good deal. I got the sesame chicken and a bit through eating it they ended up bringing me more, saying they had not given me enough. It wasnt my favorite sesame chicken ever but I tried some of the hibachi food and that was amazing. It was a combination of that and their attention to detail that earned them five stars
There for daughters birthday on 03/06/20. Waited 10-15 min to be seated along with 3 other people. Finally someone from kitchen came out n seated us. My food was ok but just warm not hot like it had just been cooked. My daughter had filet mignon and shrimp, what was suppose to be the filet was cut into little tiny squares about 1/8th thick and more fat than meat. I rated 2 because our waitress was very nice. We were not served any ice cream or birthday dessert.
Lately, every time we go here, we want to go less. The building is not well maintained inside anymore. We are disappointed by something each time. This time, their internet was down so they couldnt take credit cards or gift cards (one of the reasons we chose to go there). One of us had to go to an ATM to get cash. One of the waitstaff said that this is the 10th time this has happened in the time that they have worked there. For these issues and many others from previous visits, we wont be back.
The service was extremely slow, our waitress Amber was snotty and made snarky comments to our family. The cooks were actually great. Everyone at the table who has ribeye had commented on the amount of fat in the steak. The veggie portion also seemed to be less than half of the normal portions we get. At the end, we asked the hostess Tia to speak with a manager. After about 10 minutes of waiting for a manager, my mom asked if there was one here? Tia replied with (extreme attitude) yes actually she is busy serving. and you dont need to talk to me like that and your daughter over there- I dont know who she thinks she is, keeps running her mouth about me. I was amazed... I am a waitress, I am never one to get rude with restuarant workers because I am one myself! As an employee to say that to a guest? I cannot imagine having the audacity. The manager offered us compensation for the next time we visit but I dont think anyone in our party of twenty plans on coming back. The manager was kind but just too horrible of an experience to want to return.
Horrible service. Ordered my food and waited 2 hours and they then decided to tell me they couldn’t make my food. I ordered something else, wait even longer and get home to find out that they gave me the wrong food, and the sushi were falling apart. No apology or given for the mistakes.Do not recommend and will never be going back. Would give zero stars if I could.
Ordered take out, was told it would be ready in 30 minutes, it took an hour to receive my food. Once I arrived home I found that nearly half my order was missing and this was not the worst of it. I ordered two sushi rolls, one Philadelphia roll and one Firecracker roll. The Philadelphia roll contains raw salmon, the rolls were placed in a take out bag with hot food causing the salmon to become warm and begin to stink (I.e the salmon had begun to spoil) also the Firecracker roll is made with artificial crab🤮.Unsafe food handling, unorganized staff and poor management have caused this one “nice” restaurant to run down hill. It’s unfortunate to write this bad review in these trying times however this is unacceptable. Now after shelling out $75 for half my order and one spoiled sushi roll I’m sitting here still hungry.
March 13, 2020 The food was ok because I was hungry, but the place was very dirty. I was seated in a grill room and the lightswitch plates looked like they had NEVER been wiped down. The building is very rundown. What a shame. It used to be a really classy, special place to go. I wont be back. I certainly hope management uses this time off to spruce the place up.
Well we had reservation at 6. Didn’t get seated till 7:13. Server came promptly however she looked very nonprofessional and if paying $30 a meal I am going to want someone to at least that looked like she showered to serve us and not speak in slang. We had a large party and kept her back to half of us. We ordered drinks and mine personally came out wrong I had ordered the same thing as someone else at the table. And it clearly was not made the same. Food was mediocre at best. Our hibachi chef was not personal. And I’ve been to many grills similar to here and they were a hundred times better. His excuse was the ceiling were low bc of fire issues. Okay so why even have a grill in a drop ceiling room? Yes it is not his fault. However with the deck that is falling apart, 1.25 wait after our reservation was made, and a nonshowered server. Very unimpressed. Will never return.
We loved it all 6 of us. We waited 15 min for our table (had reservations). The food was great, service and our cook, he was awesome and very entertaining... Although a bit expensive, its a good place to splurge. Tried food we never had before. Not recommend to take children. Its a time for enjoyment... Even the other couple that was seated with us had a great time..A definite return, but only on special occasions.
Sat in the private section on the night of May 27th and couldn’t of been happy with our service. Our waitresses name was Breanna and she went above and beyond in every aspect possible. She was a polite women and she was very knowledgeable with the menu and answered every question we had with 100% confidence. She is the spitting image of what customer service should look like across the board.
Food is always great. Unfortunately today I ordered take out I was told it would be ready in about 20 min, it took me 30 min to arrive. Then waited an additional 15 min sitting at the bar waiting and unacknowledged. Finally when then girl came out she said they were backed up and apologize for the wait. There were 4 servers standing around watching whatever football game was on that easily could of helped out the kitchen expo food in the window. Highly dissapointing especially for it being $30 practically for a single plate of food and getting home to it being cold.
The food was great. The yum yum sauce is to die for. I waited for ever for sugar for my coffee. The wait was so long my coffee was cold. They sat us original at a broken hibachi. Under this my grandson found used gum stuck to it. I made him wash his hands immediately after touching it because who knows how long it was there. The new was was cleaner.
The wait time was ridiculous! We were told 20-25min and ended up waiting an hour and 45min!!! We went up to the hostess after waiting 45 minutes and were told it would only be another 20 minutes and our table was next. After we were told that, other parties were still being seated before us. The hostess was rude and unprofessional. We also wanted to either speak with a manager or the owner, we were told that would gladly get him for us. He never came over.
I always enjoy the food when I go to Genjis but I went there with intentions of just getting a cocktail or two to celebrate my promotion with a friend but it didnt go as well as Id hoped. It took about 15 to 20 minutes (and Im not exaggerating) to get our drinks. Mind you this is not a Saturday night its a Wednesday mid day. Not too busy at all. At least 3 employees saw and aknowledged us and said have you been helped yet? or has the bartender been with you? The drinks we ordered were fairly easly, we ordered two wines. The bartender was distracted and unattentive, waited quite a while for service for a second drink. All around displeased with the lack of service. Usually I enjoy every minute at Genjis but very disappointed with the bar service today.
Please ignore the review by Kay Lauren, this is clearly nothing but slander on a fake account made by a *former* employee after she was fired (for the second time) for stealing. Her review was posted about 2 hours after she was canned, and she has hated the manager in question since he was hired over her. Clearly this isn’t a customer review since customers don’t interact with managers as much as described.
By far the best restaurant in Saginaw. The food is amazing and the atmosphere sitting at the grill is always fantastic. No matter what you order the food is always fresh and cooked to perfection, and the sushi is by far the best in the Tri-cities. The outside looks a bit rough, but the inside is in perfect shape. Overall it is expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Food was great and the cook was great. The waiter was a different story. This place has a good atmosphere and people are mostly friendly. Our waitress on this particular night was quite forgetful. Food is expensive as you are also paying for the show, but its worth the price for special occasions. Overall is a good experience.
The restaurant was not very clean. The floors were greasy and slippery. We waited 25 minutes for our drinks. The chef just hurried through and didn’t do the usual entertaining. Food was average at best and higher priced than competitors. My first visit here. We usually go to Sagano’s . Won’t return .
Getting old feeling inside. Food not too good. Did not bring home leftovers. Panda Express food much better and especially much fresher. Sushi rolls heavy on rice light on sushi. One of the sushi roll tasted weird but the waitress didnt do anything to correct it. Rice a little dry and hard.
Place has gone downhill a bit from when it first opened. Building needs some updating, but the food is always great, good entertainment, and fun experience. The prices are steep, so make sure you are willing to splurge a little... unless you hit the early bird special of course.
This used to be my favorite place. Expensive but worth it. I just went last week, $35 a person not including sushi and drinks. Our menus were torn and stained. One was missing all but one page and that page had pricing crossed out and written with a sharpee. Only ice cream was sherbet. Disappointing!
Well the place is in need of some TLC. The walls ar, the floor is sticky and the green paint on the railings is chipping. The meal, according to the menu was to include ice cream, but due to Covid its not allowed. I dont buy that! The portions are not what they were at one time, very small, but bill large with a gratuity of 17% added.
Genjis has been great when Ive gone in the past. Not so much this afternoon.Today, we showed up at 3pm when they opened. There was a 30 minute wait for the regular tables so they suggested we sit in private dining. This is where you sit in a separate, normal dining room and the food isnt prepared in front of you.The tables were filthy. We were the first people in the restaurant for the day, yet the tables were sticky and there were bits of food all over the place. We got our food at about 3:30pm (30 minutes after restaurant opening) and all 4 of our plates were cold. It really seemed as though it was food from the night before that we reheated for us. The meat looked and tasted old, not like it was cooked in the last hour. Not worth $27 a plate.Genji has been good in the past, but avoid private dining.
This place looks like its going to close soon. There were boxes of miscellaneous hangers and other junk occupying a table in the bar area. My wife ordered wine and the glass had old lipstick marks on it and the bartop was nasty and sticky. The bathrooms were trashed and the male bathroom had no soap in it. The waitstaff wasnt bad but had no concept of manners. Food was ok. I would rather go to the Midland location until the Saginaw one acts like they care about their restaurants appearance
We were there for a Birthday celebration first of all had to wait 35 minutes to be seated and had a reservation. Second of all had go to be seated and there all all kind of places to sit and why we waited so long I don’t understand. Had to wait for food for another 35 minutes. There was no salt on the walkway and it was snowing that day. The building is falling down anyway I won’t be going there again.
Use to go here several years ago and always had excellent service and the food is wonderful. However, we were just here on Feb 28th and the service was terrible. We were told to be 15 min early for our reservation, which we were. It was for 6pm for 7 people, they didnt seat us until 6:25pm. From there the whole thing felt rushed. Our server asked for our drink and dinner orders right away as we were sitting down, which was fine, however she offered a wine list but never brought it, from there she proceeded to only bring half our drinks. My wine was finally delivered half way through dinner. From there 2 of our apptizers were not brought out. Our salads and soups were tossed in front of us before the other apptizers, the ones we actually got were delivered half way through the cook making our dinner. When a manager came over to ask how things were, our one guest still hadnt recevied his calamari salad and her only response was well do you still want it? Not even a sorry, however she did take 99 cents off the salad. The table and glasses were dirty, the server kept forgetting everything, water was never refilled. The check was literally tossed to me as she was giving us our dessert. From there our bill had several errors. She charged everyone for 2 wines each, then said we did have them. Which we didnt, the chargers were taken off. Overall it felt like they were more concerned with just getting people in and out then actually providing quaility service. This use to be one of the best places to go in Saginaw to eat, however not anymore. Our cook did an great job and the meal he made was very good. We talked with a manager after we had paid the bill because we honestly were so surpirsed how bad the service was and all she said was Oh well I am sorry but I did take those extra charges off. Of course she had to take them off because they were items we hadnt ordered or never received. Not sure who or how this place is being managed now, but its not how it use to be.
Ive been here several times over the years. Watching the hibachi grill masters is mesmerizing. I feel bad sitting there watching them cook my food in this mesmerized awkward silence, but theyre sociable and break the silence. They are truly professionals. The only problem with the food is that I eat too much of it and cant walk straight. Prices are higher relative to other places in the area. But this is a once-a-year treat-yo-self kind of restaurant, not a regular weekly stop place. I sat down with a crazy lady one time and she seemed to like it also.
Very sad to see what was once one of the best restaurants in Saginaw go completely down hill went in Monday and ordered a simple order of fried rice to go when I ordered it I asked the lady to please make sure its fresh because I know they usually keep it in a warmer she assured me it would be fresh while waiting for the order at the bar it was very muggy inside the restaurant coolers had so much water dripping off them you couldnt even see in them once I got my food I took it out to my truck to find out the rice was old all stuck together and just nasty looking so I went back in to ask for a fresh order after walking around the whole restaurant to find a employee I found a lady that got a manager she came out to help me and I told her I ask for fresh rice so she grabbed my bag and took it to the kitchen got the rice back less then 3 minutes later needless to say they put it in the microwave and never made my order fresh that rice went in the garbage and me or any of my family will never go back
The food was good overall, but waiting on a table is ridiculous. I called and made reservations as soon as they opened for that night. When I arrived at my expected time....I still had to wait like 30 or more minutes for a table. Plus I heard people complaining that they had been waiting like 2 hours and still had not been seated. Something needs to be done about this...thats was my only complaint.
Very poor service, appetizer came with meal, never got salads at all, entre was cold, like it had sat there a while. Air conditioning was on in March, ate with coats on. Had to search for waitor to get bill. Emailed through website that evening, no response. Too much money for such poor service.
Food is good. Staff is great but it is out dated and run down looking, inside and out. Its very dusty inside and has a smell. As much as they charge for their food youd think theyd update the place or at least pay Stanley to come in once and a while geez...BUT i still eat there. What does that tell ya :P
If you eat at one of the Hibachi grills you will be entertained while you watch your food being cooked. There is enough food for two meals and it always tasted good. It can get a little repetitive if you eat there alot watching the same routines but I never get tired of the food.
I did not get to judge the food but as soon as I sat at the bar I handed the bartender my ID and she immediately looked confused like she had never seen an out of state ID. After looking it over she asked to see my ID again like it was a fake and she didnt ask politely or quietly she decided to do it in front of the entire bar, so at that point I told her I wont be eating here and asked to see a manager. Well the ignorant bartender must have been blind because when reviewing the ID examples the manager did not see a problem with my ID. Aside from their worthless apology I told them I would be sure to post this on urbanspoon and every other outlet I could.
2nd time we have made reservations here. Major failure. The purpose of reserving is to have a table ready for us. Came in and found they gave our table to someone else, so we had to wait for that group to finish up their dinner. Last time we will go to Genjis No respect for their patrons or their time. Horrible experience!
We walked into the door thinking ok its lunch time because we had to wait 5 mins for a table we get seated and there was no One in the restraint. Then it took a mother 5 mins till are waiter to take a drinks. The food Im my opinion was supermarket vegetables and cosco protein. My roommate at I are very disappointed

2022-01-04This was our first time at Genji. There were a few hits and misses. Loved the miso soup, the salad with carrot ginger dressing was something I had never tasted before, loved it. But there was also some confusion, the hibachi chef who was supposed to come to our table was sent to the adjacent, due to which everyone at our table had to keep waiting and that caused some delay. (Almost an hour)Although, I must mention, our attendant was a very attentive and a lovely person, she kept apologizing for the inconvenience, which is fine, as this was no fault of hers. I had the Saginaw signature sushi roll, I perhaps would have enjoyed it more had it been done differently. The shrimp was undercooked and gave away the dish for me, I had asked our server if the shrimp would be raw or cooked, and I was told it would be cooked. On the up side, my husband enjoyed his hibachi grill. Since there were only 5 people at our table, the chef seemed to be in a rush, no fancy tricks or funny banter for us :( was really kinda looking forward to it as that kind of encompasses the whole hibachi experience. We ended with their dessert which was like a mixed sorbet of sorts, I liked it.

2022-04-14This place was great. The staff was phenomenal. We had a large dinner party. They were unexpectedly short staffed. They were up front, apologized, and made sure our experience was the best. The food was not only so yummy, but how they prepared it was exciting. It wasnt just a table of people eating, it made it a more relaxed vibe and energized. Overall, so enjoyable in more ways than expected.

2022-02-27EXCELLENT FOOD! Staff was professional and friendly. Only complaint was the waiting time both before and after our seating, however, something like that you should expect in a busy city on a Saturday night. Regardless, I would recommend coming here. I look forward to my next visit.

2022-06-17For our anniversary my girlfriend and I ate here. The food was wonderful, but other parts of the experience left things to be desired. The first thing I noticed was a whole egg shell on the floor that remained there through the whole dinner. We were sat with a couple on their first date. I think that was an opportunity at a very special experience that we missed out on, and the other couple missed out on. They were friendly, but the ideal experience in both of our cases wouldve been tables by ourselves. The food arrived quickly after ordering, but our chef hardly talked. When he did he was very nice, just out of personal preference I wouldve liked more banter.

2022-02-28We went early evening on 2-27-22/ Sunday, no salmon, no scallops, not even egg, had to settle for chicken Chef was yelling across the restaurant in different language for someone to bring out our shrimp for appetizers, all the tables were filthy, you could see and feel the greese on every table. Then they automatically charged a 18% gratuity. Because of what appears to be laziness and lack of ordering, let me choose the minimum tip!! Not going back

2022-04-05Terrible…. Came last night for sister’s birthday, the entire place has no heat. They made us wait two hours to be served even though they have three or four unoccupied hibachi tables. They burned the vegetables, had no cake or ice cream, no 50% off on birthday guests anymore, & forced gratuity on a family of 5. No wonder they’re going out of business. This place is mistreating their customers and I hope this review helps someone before they make the mistake of coming here for their birthday. Try Tangy Crab down the street. Don’t go here!

2021-03-14Absolutely an awesome experience! It was my first time ever going to a Hibatchi Grill/Japanese Steakhouse. The chef was very interactive and friendly! The best shrimp Saginaw has to offer! Right from the Saginaw River! And This is my first time doing this as he does his fancy cuts and flips with his spatulas! Example of some of the jokes he cracked. All the food was fantastic and fresh. It was quite pricey, BUT was worth the extra. Sushi was fantastic and fresh. Tip your chef good, because he works hard doing what he does! Would definitely go again! Enjoy your food! 5/5* pictured below. **Casino Sushi**

2020-08-29Ive visited Genjis dozens of times between 2002 - 2019 and already love the food! Our visit on 8.28.20 was one of my Top 3 experiences and I wanted to applaud the staff and management for making our visit amazing.Cleanliness was top notch, staff all wore masks and tables were appropriately set up for social distancing. The vibe was romantic and Im kinda loving the extra space. The two of us called ahead a few hours to set up a reservation at 9 pm, enjoyed a chef to ourselves, and we were leaving with our extra food by 10:30 pm.We were able to redeem our 25% off birthday meal, since I missed my April visit due to Covid. Yes you can too enjoy 25% off if you love Genjis and had a 🎂 March - July.Great Date Night 🌙 out - 2020 friendly
