Grey Gables catered our wedding and they were amazing to work with. We had to reschedule our original wedding due to COVID and they were great throughout the whole process. We did some unique things at our event, including a Christmas Cookie decorating bar, and they made everything happen perfectly. The food was amazing and we could not be happier with the whole experience! Thank you to Katie and the team at Grey Gables!
Food was ok for the money. I was expecting more of that wow factor you know.. Chairs in the porch seating area were uncomfortable. Both my wife and I commented our butts were sore by the end of dinner. Their on line menu showed prime rib & oysters on the half shell for Saturday night both were unavailable at 7:00 pm. Oh.. the mens bathroom stall doesnt have a door.. umm.. veryy awkward when someone walks in (the bathroom door has no lock.) With that said the service was very good.
We dined there this summer and had excellent service and a fantastic dinner. They have a very easy reservation system online which is extremely helpful and convenient. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very cute and had a lot of character. The menu had a nice variety of options and they had a good selection of wine and other beverages as well.
We were referred to this restaurant and very excited to go. The mushroom soup was good but we both had the stuffed walleye and it was VERY disappointing. The fish had zero season and the shrimp/crab stuffing was actually very soggy bread like stuffing with a salad shrimp in it. I would not recommend it. FYI, there is no parking so you must park on the street, bring umbrellas.
The food was amazing and service was prompt. The only disappointment was that dessert and after dinner drinks were not available because the kitchen and bar closed during our meal. We did have a later reservation but the server never informed us that they were closing. We would have ordered dessert and drinks at that time. She missed out on a larger tip as there were 6 people ordering.
This is where my second unbelievable meal in Charlevoix took place. The dinning experienced from service to meal quality is exquisite! From beginning to end I left with no regrets, a full stomach and wanting more. The corn bisque soup couldn’t be more fresh.. the meatballs with their homemade sauce is next level.. the filet with mash is second to none... and the dessert which was an apple cobbler was the perfect ending. Will be coming back.
In a house. Different menus for different seasons. Waitress that had the mannerisms of a roadside coney island. Broke basic rules of restaurant etiquette. For the high price I have to say I expected much better. If you are in the area looking for fine dining or best food then visit elsewhere and give this place a pass.Oh - the food was decent.
Arguably the best restaurant in downtown Charlevoix, and possibly in the county. They do a great job catering.Draft beer list could use some updating and modernizing.Ambience is semi-formal but I don’t feel out of place dressing casual. I probably wouldn’t bring young kids during dinner during the summer.
Over the last 19 years coming to Charlevoix, Grey Gables has become our favorite restaurant … until last night. The bar and bar area were extremely busy. There was a gentleman at the bar with an empty seat on each side. I asked if he would mind moving over a seat, and he said, “Sure, no problem.”The host came over SEETHING. He said it was Very Rude and Totally Unacceptable. He asked us leave! We thanked the gentleman at the bar and left.Interestingly, on several previous dinners at their bar, WE were asked to move over a seat to accommodate another guest (which we gladly did, as is normal when sitting at a bar). None of these guests were called RUDE and none of these guests were asked to LEAVE.Obviously, Grey Gables will not miss the business of a vacationing couple. We are just sad and disappointed as we had planned 4 dinners there during our 2 week stay.C’est la vie!
This is such a charming location and the food is fabulous. The meal specials are quite affordable, and the serving staff are courteous and efficient. They do take reservations, which is helpful on the weekends, although if you arrive early enough you may be able to get a table without a reservation. You will enjoy this dining experience.
My wife and I are locals and visit the Gables a few times a year for the last 20+ years. In fact this last visit on June 30 was our 20th wedding anniversary. The service was slow (to be expected now in northern MI) our bar drinks went empty and our water was empty even after our waiter sat 3 new tables and filled their water glasses right next to us.I know everyone is short handed, but how can you let the staff walk past an empty glass pushed to the edge of the table so they can fill someone elses? The food was ok ( I had the filet mignon) but not the cut I have grown to expect. It seems every year the table service slips further and further down hill. No one seems to know simple dining etiquette any more, maybe the masses dont know or want that type of service anymore. We have enjoyed dining with you for a long time and with both my wife and I having worked in restaurants like yours we know how hard it can be for the staff. We will be back and hopefully things will be back to normal.
Visiting Charlevoix we found Grey Gables online and gave them a call to see if we needed reservations. The hostess said if we were going to be there in the next 15 minutes we would not need a reservation and there was no wait. We promptly walked from the marina to the restaurant. When we arrived a male s female host snd hostess greeted us. The male immediately asked if we had reservations, I said no that the woman we just spoke with said we didnt need a reservation. At that time the female hostess found something to distract herself and ignored our conversation with the host. After arguing that we were told we wouldnt need a reservation he said the only thing we have is outside. We reluctantly said we would take it.. When seated in no mans land we were seated directly next to a hanging basket that had a speaker blasting a local radio station commercials and all. Service was ok and the food nothing special. Bottom line, I wouldnt come back. Over priced for the quality of food, service and atmosphere.
My wife and I had the best experience here! They have the most friendly and welcoming staff. We got there before they opened and they still seated us with a warm welcome. The owner even came and sat at our table for a brief moment. It came highly recommended by locals and the food was absolutely delicious! We will be back. Thank you!
5 stars all around but if I could give our waitress, Sherry, 5 more I would! She handled our large group of 13 like the goddess that she is! She had as laughing, chatting, and just made our birthday celebration so much more merrier. The food and drinks were amazing. If and when we return, the waiter that helps us has big shoes to fill but I have no doubt that they are all a great team if she is their leader!
Grey Gables catered for my wedding and did a phenomenal job! The food was incredible- weve gotten so many complements, the bartenders were great, and everyone worked so hard to make sure the day was perfect for us. I highly recommend using them for any catering needs!
Grey Gables catered our wedding at the end of October and they were fantastic!! Everyone has been raving about their food and how it was the best wedding food theyve had! Everything was so fresh and everyone was so easy to work with! Their bartenders were fantastic and they were so reasonably priced! 10/10 from us!
A group of 13 went here to celebrate a friends birthday. Not only was the food absolutely amazing, but the service was impeccable. Our server, Sherry, made our experience so fun and enjoyable that we all may come back just so we can see her again! Sherry - you are the crowned jewel of Grey Gables!
We got married at Castle Farms on December 30, 2019 and had Grey Gables cater and bartend our wedding. We live in Metro Detroit and planning was a breeze with them, since Katie and I were able to communicate mostly via email. Katie was awesome to work with and very organized. We did a tasting before the wedding and everything we tried was very yummy, plus it was cool to be the only ones in the restaurant before it opened. The food day-of was also very good, and they were incredible with making sure everyone with dietary restrictions got the food they could eat (including me, making me a plate with no dairy!). We also got a s’mores bar for dessert, which was a huge hit. Pricing was reasonable and very straightforward. Everything was well managed and well communicated in the weeks before the wedding and the day-of. We ordered 2 kegs of beer through them, supplied our own hard liquor and ordered wine through the Castle. We sent recipes for our signature cocktails beforehand and they were absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend working with Katie and the rest of the staff at Grey Gables for your wedding!
We booked Grey Gables for our wedding. We sampled food at their restaurant, the chicken in the tomato cream sauce was amazing, beef was outstanding as well. At the wedding itself the food was as advertised. The staff was professional, everything was on time, what more could you ask for!?We would recommend them to anyone looking for catering up north, including friends and family.
We were visiting the area and decided to go here for our anniversary dinner. We called before coming and were told the last seating was at 9:00. We got there at 8:45 and received terrible service. Even though we spent $100 on our dinner, everything felt very rushed. Not a huge deal but we also never got our bread. I’m sure we would have got better service if we came earlier, but we were very disappointed. The food was just okay, too.
Hotel/condos were great, front desk staff was really nice. Just the Housekeeping was odd. After first night, they made up one room, but didnt touch the other room. After the second night, they made up the second room, pulled up the sheets in the first bedroom, but left the spread on the floor. We had to ask for coffee every day. But overall, Id stay there again.
Great place to grab dinner when you are in town. Bar side is more casual, buy has the full menu. Dining room side is a little more quiet, but still lovely. Mushroom soup is delicious. I also has a duck breast special with creamy polenta. I only had club soda and with tip came to just over $40. Great value.
Very good restaurant. The server I think his name was Kenroy was fantastic. The food was the best Ive had in Charlevoix. The older building it is set in is a beautiful setting for the restaurant. Also, they do catering and i have heard that it is amazing. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
We hired Grey Gables to cater our wedding at Castle Farms. We went with the combination plate of beef and chicken. All of our guests said the food was wonderful (and we thought so too!).Leading up to the wedding communication was prompt, clear, and helpful. Katie answered all of our questions well and was willing to work with us to make small changes to the contract close to the wedding (updated guest count, removal of services, adding of others, etc.). We live about 4 hours away so email contact worked best for us and they always responded with what we needed.During the event the staff was efficient and nearly invisible (in the good way). The only time they asked for any of our attention on the day of was when they were floating to make sure everything was going smoothly and happened to catch the glance of the groom. They thought the glance meant we needed something and immediately came over to the head table to check. It turned out that we didnt but it demonstrates just how on top of the event they were. During last call the bartender came up to us and made sure that we didnt need anything before they left, which was also a great demonstration of how hard they were working to make sure we were taken care of.We would happily recommend Grey Gables to anyone looking for a caterer with great food and service! (Especially at Castle Farms because they seem to know the venue inside and out.)
The food is thoughtful and delicious and the atmosphere is pleasant. Most of the staff is friendly and polite but a few of them seem like they would better suited at a truck-stop diner, which sounds terrible but actually adds a welcomed touch of hominess to the bar. For best results, call and make a reservation. My only complaint is that I have frequently come in around 8:45pm for a drink and appetizer/etc only to be told that the kitchen is closed (hours say 9pm).
One of our must visits when on vacation. The food is always fantastic and Pam is the bomb! The prime rib is excellent and we always call in advance to reserve a cut to the temperature we enjoy. Beet salad is delicious as are the scallops. You really cant go wrong. Only suggestion would be to change the menu description of the pasta bolognese. It stated the noodles were pappardelle but brought out corkscrew pasta. They quickly returned with a different dish of our choice without a fuss. Quaint setting.
The waiter rushed us in making both drink decisions- and dinner choices. He seemed barely tolerate of questions about the menu and was not at all friendly or engaging. The bread basket was comprised of very low quality white bread and some sweet scone-like biscuits--- quite unsatisfying. This restaurant most definitely did not live up to other reviews and was not worth the prices -- Will not return.
Wow, wow, WOW. Grey Gables catered our wedding and from the get-go, they were prompt to return my emails and accommodate my every request (I was very particular about a lot of items). The steak for 170 guests was cooked Medium-rare to perfection (exactly as requested). The food was warm as they used warmed plates, the service was impeccable and their bartending service was surely some of the best of Northern Michigan wedding caterers. We had a His and Hers cocktail both with specific ingredients as well as recipes. Grey Gables was able to make these with ease along with an extensive cocktail menu that we provided beforehand that we wanted guests to be able to order. They showed up on time and were setup early, ready to go with restaurant level service and bartending. If you want the best wedding food and bartending you can get, this is it. They are able to execute on specific requests and for their service, the price gives you great value. I expected a lot from them, and they exceeded my expectations. Its difficult to serve 170 people in a timely manner with delicious food and drinks, but Grey Gables is definitely a team you can trust to get it done!
The drinks were amazing, as were the appetizers. The main entree, however, was heavily salted. Both our dinners were covered in the same sauce which was much too salty. The scones are handmade by the owner, and are delicious. Would go back, but would try going for lunch.
A great restaurant in an old house. My mom had the ribs, a huge plate that I had to help her eat. Im not a rib guy, but they were great, the BBQ sauce had a nice kick. The ribs came with some great fries and a vegetable which was green beans & carrots. I ordered the Sea Scallops, which I recieved 3 huge ones, very tasty and cooked just right. The dish came with a very tasty bacon jam & cheesy polenta. I also ordered the grilled brussel sprouts, that Ill definitely order next time I eat there.
Lived in Boyne City for 24yrs and have never been here. Loved, loved LOVED my dinner. My husbands was FANTASTIC!! His salmon was not fishy, couldnt even tell that it was salmon.Waitress Erin was the kind of waitress you always want!!! Its now on our rotation to revisit..often.
Went on 4/19/18 found long brown/blonde hair in food. Waiter (Jay) took hair . He later brought bill( full price). We asked about the hair in my food. Said no one except bartender has hair like that. Manager never came to table at apologize for the long hair in my dinner. Very sad that manager would not take the time ( not busy at all) to talk to us . Very poor management- stay away unless you like hair in your food
Great little restaurant and bar off the main strip in town. Food and service were spectacular. Staff went out of their way to ensure a wonderful dining experience. Filet and Hanger steak were tastey and prepared as requested. Desert selection was yummy and finished the meal perfectly. Pricy but worth it.
Food was excellent, but asked for a table in a room that was not so Noisy. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO CARRY ON A CONVERSATION! WE WERE TOLD NO SINCE WE HAD NOT made reservations. Yet there was all kinds of space to eat where it was not so Loud!!!! I WONT be returning, even though the food was wonderful.

2021-11-26Perfectly paired menu items show just how thoughtful and brilliant the chef is. Fresh caught walleye pictured here with a shrimp, garlic, and spinach stuffing. The flakiness of the fish, with the crunch of the bredding, and the crispiness of the celery in the stuffing with the sauce was just beyond compare. Youll love it.

2021-08-24Grey Gables catered our daughter’s wedding this past weekend and they hit it out of the park. The whole process of booking them, having a tasting and all of the follow-up were on point. The day of the wedding was stress free for me, because it was clear that Kelly Romano and Katie, her catering manager, were on top of it all. They got the ceremony flipped to dinner seating effortlessly. The dinner was served efficiently and the guests raved. The wedding day was stress free, because we had Grey Gables on our team.

2022-04-01Simply fantastic. Took my wife on a date to GG last night for the first time and it was a great experience. We were served by Kenroy who was the best server we have ever had. He completely complimented date night and was very accommodating to a customized order request. The food was timely, but not so fast as to rush the night. I had the pasta bolognese and it was perfection in a bowl, with a generous portion. The drinks were divine and the warm bread as we waited was also great. Of course, it was very pricey, but I knew what I was in for, and the night was worth every cent. We will be back again and again for special occasions.

2020-09-23Definitely one of Northern Michigans best restaurants especially if you love steak or local seafood like whitefish or walleye. They also have a great special for two, 6 days a week between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. the restaurant is a converted home so it has great ambiance, a bar and small banquet area.

2019-07-21The calamari is amazing!!! The desserts divine. The cabbage veggie on the side was not that good, but other than that a great meal and great service! Be prepared to spend quite a bit for the entree, but it is delicious!
