Guss World Famous Fried Chicken in other cities:
The very first time I patronized Guss...it was great! Now they throw your freshly fried chicken in a BROWN PAPER BAG! UUGGGH! BY THE TIME YOU GET HOME....THE CHICKEN IS STEAMED IN THE BAG...THE BAG STARTS TO BREAKDOWN FROM THE GREASE AND/OR STEAM! THEREBY TURNING CRISPY FRIED CHICKEN INTO MUSH! THIS LAST VISIT...I ASKED THE YOUNG LADY IF SHE COULD NOT PUT MY CHICKEN IN A BAG! SHE DID IT ANYWAY! 🤨 I ordered a whole chicken (2 of all pieces)...all my chicken was THROWN IN A BROWN PAPER BAG! I PAID OVER $30 DOLLARS FOR MY ORDER! 😑
My very first time here. Plenty of food for one person. The greens were just a little salty, mac n cheese was good I got the two sides with white meat and dessert.I had the chocolate chess pie. Sooooo good. I’ve never had chocolate pie, LatashaM with the blue hair was my waitress she freaking rocked all by herself. She put me on that pie.The staff were just as sweet. I WILL be returning.
I ordered a 3pc + 1 extra breast with 2 sides. They gave me a 3pc one right side order and the other order wrong. I am still in line waiting on fries and 1 breast from Guss. Like i have been waiting since 4:35 and its 5:11 now. The fries and breast is done just waiting for some one to say something before I do, but Im good on service from here. Thanks for the food. I just now received my breast and fries at 5:20pm I can leave now, thanks I will not be back, and when I got home the food was still hot, smells great, taste wonderful but the service sucks.
This place was amazing. The atmosphere was chill the prices were right. The chicken definitely deserves to be world famous! Juicy, crispy and spicy. Uniquely delicious and well seasoned. So good we ate there and got some to take home. All fresh, cooked to order. Fast and friendly service. Beers on draft and in the can. You can even get a 40oz if you feel so inclined. I will 100% be back!
We spent $16.65 for a 3 piece white with two sides & a sweetened 16oz tea. Honestly that is a little expensive to me but my husband enjoyed it. The greens tasted like they buy the frozen pre cut bags & the mac n cheese tasted like they use powdered cheese as well. The chicken itself was tastey. The atmosphere is inviting & the service was good. The place is very roomy and airy. Tall, industrious ceilings & nice decor.
Omg this is the Best Fried Chicken!!!! I’ve been to location in Westland, Mi for takeout it was GREAT TOO!!! My family and I went on a rather busy daytime the Detroit location so there was a little wait but ... we did order breast and they take a little longer to cook through and through... Pam our waitress was awesome!!! She took care of us and kept checking on us. The customer service along with food a Definitely worth price !!! (2 pcs white with 2 sides with drink about 13-15 a plate)
Ive been to this place so many times Im surprised I havent taken any pictures of the food itself. Probably because its that good, that once the food comes out, its devoured before you know it. I usually go with the breast & wings combo (slightly spicy) but Ive also had the chicken strips as well. The food is great, the beer is awesome & cold, service is top notch... & the food comes fairly fast. Plus its hormone- free chicken served super fresh, who doesnt enjoy eating slightly a bit healthier??
The chicken was small like the size of wing dings (too darn expensive plus left a tip)and still pink/bloody on the inside which is not the first time this has happened but still trying to patronize. I’m used to patronizing every week however this is the last time with my order being messed up! You can do better bcuz I’ve seen better!
Spicy Chicken! The chicken is everything. Thin crunchy crispy breading. Juicy meat. I got the 3 piece white plate. Two huge breasts and a wing. Paid to upgrade to mac n cheese.Price is high for the side portions. Unless you get a plate, everything is AlaCarte. Service was fast and efficient.Beware this is not fancy. Mismatch chairs, checkered table cloths, plastic and paper plates, cups, and utensils.Ill be ba k just for the chicken! Its good enough to think about if the next day.
I ordered chicken tenders fries and fried pickles fried pickles were awesome but my tenders were fried too hard making them tough and my frozen fries were cold. This was my first time and i won’t go back. I did call and tell them about my order and Lois was excellent so i might add that they have awesome customer service. I was told to come back anytime ask for Lois and she would fix the problem. Thank u Lois
My first visit to this chain was in Memphis and it was Amazing!!! This location did not disappoint!! If you like fried chicken then you have to try Gus’s!! Prices are pretty good and the menu is simple making ordering easy. Our family loves the GREENS, (these are fantastic) the fried green tomatoes 🍅 and fried okra. The Mac and cheese, and baked beans are ok but lacking in our opinion. Make sure to try the ice sweet tea it’s devine!!! Also the staff is always friendly and attentive we have never had a bad experience. ENJOY!!!
The chicken is really crispy the pieces are big but the prices are inflated like a hot air balloon. I dont understand how you can charge $10 for 2 pieces of chicken and an order of fries and a sweet tea. Its not a good value for the money but if youre just looking for someplace to take nice pictures and get really crispy chicken go here.
Conveniently located in Midtown Detroit. Gus offers fresh, tasty, fried chicken with a spicy tang. The restaurant seems to always be clean. The kitchen is exposed so you can see the staff prepare your meal - which is always a plus for me. They also have large screens so you can watch the game. And if you needed more incentive to visit, you can even enjoy a cold beer while youre here.My only critique would be the option of wheat bread or maybe cornbread with your meal instead of just white bread.
Mad I ordered from here. First off these chicken tenders are hella over cooked. The tenders were so dry and hard I only ate one bite before trashing it. Seasoned fries?? Not at all. And if you think ranch is gonna save this meal good luck as they only give one small container. First & last time here
I use to absolutely love this place, when they first opened food was on point, top notch customer service! I use to literally eat here about three times a week but lately, absolutely horrible. Ordered my food at 11:10 on Monday 12/6 arrived there at 11:30 did not receive my food until 12:03. Got back to work and two pieces of my co-workers chicken was bloody dont know if any of mine where because I tossed it!!!!!!!!! I almost vomited, my love affair with this restaurant is definitely over!
Delicious!!!! No bells & whistles..just good ole food done right. I had the two piece quarter dark, my sides (mac & cheese & greens). Im glad I finally decided to try. It has a very casual family vibe. Clean establishment and friendly staff. My husband also gave a thumbs up. We will definitely be going back.
Juicy chicken. Even the breast which is usually a lil dry. Had it for the first time last night. I had to let my parents taste it. Theyre really big kfc fans. Ill find out there reaction tomorrow. ❤ I reccomend you At least a try it. Staff is great!!! Place is clean❤❤
I came to dine in on September 15, 2021. Was there before 7:30 pm. Ask if there was still able to dine in, by one females working the counter. She said the dining room was still open. Waited for someone to take the order. After waiting for half hour. I questioned why wasnt anyone coming to take the order. I was told then they was closed. Seriously this place has issues with trained employees an since of urgency. Cause the dinning room full of customers waiting to be served and the females work the counter did have a clue? And the manager Chris! Lack the ability to manage the staff at hand! I will not be coming back to this location again! Hopefully they will get the staff there some training or fire the ones who cant handle the challenge to service the customer who put up with the poor quality of service. So good luck remaining open?
Just left Guss and had to ask for an apology after waiting 30 minutes for an order I was told would only take 10 minutes. After addressing the cashier regarding the wait he had the audacity to tell me this isnt fast food. Guess he forgot that he was the one that said it would be 10 mins. I wasnt expecting fast food! I watched the cook come out into the waiting area and to gift another customer honey while I waited. The cashier was rude and lack customer skills. Watched him roll his eyes at customers and be very short with several people as I waited for 30 mins. Hope the chicken is good because the service is lacking.
This is NOT Real Southern Macaroni & Cheese. This is Mac & Chz Sauced Noodles. It amazes me at how many people eat this and consider this good. Ahhh, no it is not! I asked cashier if they make Southern Mac... she said yes and oohh it good. Girl, THIS is no where near good. Hated it!!!Chicken okay...I could deal with it.Okra.. basic pre-battered package.
We have been coming to Gus’s for a while now. Everything has always been delicious! I’m extremely disappointed with it’s my food this time! The chicken has always been juicy and flavorful! But today, my chicken was extremely over cooked, to the point of damn near petrified!I’m not a whiner, but I spent $38.00 today for something that was just about inedible. Very disappointed.
Straight forward, walk in, sit, order, then prepare to experience well seasoned, flavourful chicken! The sides are average but thats only to let that chicken shine, a lil spicy (I enjoy that) well seasoned all the way thru, nutty, golden crust that doesnt fall off as you bite into the meat, in my book this is a winning combination! I even took an 8pc togo for my family!
Horrible experience. Let me explain.I order on the phone. They tell me 15 minutes. I show up 15 minutes later and they had me waiting for 30 minutes, so a total of 45 minutes. I stand by as I see others get their orders until 30 minutes later when an employee says, “oh wait, what’s your name?” I say my name and she says, “oh. Here it is.” As she proceeds to grab a bag that has been sitting in front of her since I arrived. Doesn’t proceed to say sorry, or offer me anything. I ask for ranch please, and she gives me a mean look like it’s my fault…. Ridiculous service and my food was cold and soggy for sitting covered for 30 minutes.I’ll remove this review if I get offered a new fresh meal for free to replace the cold soggy mess that I ate after not being offered a replacement by your employee’s mistake.
GUSS chicken is the best fried chicken I have everbhadnin my entire life. I dream about guss. I make the trip from Toronto to detroit once a year to stuff myself silly full of chicken. Any location the chicken is always always delicious. I love guss please dont ever close please dont ever change. I love you so much
This place has the absolute worst service. 2 times now I’ve been told that my order would take 20 minutes to be ready only to sit there for an hour waiting for food. And on my second trip the forgot to put items in my bag. And my food was cold. Even worse a different customer on the way out of the door mentioned how “f@@@&d up” their service is. They have good food for sure and if you have the patience for horrible service I’d suggest you go, but that will be my last trip there.
Food good, service is great and I love the fried pickle spears!**** UPDATED REVIEW ****The staff has dramatically changed and service is subpar. Chicken was sometimes over cooked and the staff isnt knowledgeable about their opening and closing hours. Parking is terrible and very limited. Regular street parking but has two fire hydrants so beware of a possible ticket. The Royal Oak location is much better.
The food is absolutely horrible horrible horrible. All of the sides are nasty. The greens are canned, the cole slaw and baked beans were the worst, macaroni and cheese has that powdered cheese. The only thing that was okay is the fried green tomatoes but you only get five slices of tomatoes for 8 bucks. Our waitress was high. Very expensive and not worth the trip.
1st time customer visiting from out of town. Gus was referred to me and Im glad to say they didnt disappoint on their food. I ordered th 2pcs with 2 sides and a drink. I must say the white meat I ordered was in my top 3 I ever had. It was seasoned well and juicy. Needless to when I come back to the Detroit area I will be visiting again. Thanks Gus for the pleasurable experience.
Gus claims to be world famous, but I am from NJ and never heard about them. After eating here for a work-lunch, I can confirm that they deserve the title of World Famous.I would love to see these all over the country.I was on a lunch break on a business trip, and we ended up here for lunch. I had a 3-piece dark meat, with a side of okra and Cole slaw. The food came out in about 10 or 15 minutes. It looked and smelled delicious. There was also a single slice of white bread underneath the chicken.I had two legs and a thigh on my plate alongside the okra. I asked for some ranch to dip the okra in.The okra was crispy and tender, very pleasant to dip into the ranch. Classic combo. The chicken had a very thin coat of breading wrapped around the whole thing. It wasnt too greasy, and the meat wasnt dry.The skin and meat had flavor to them as well. It was juicy and full of flavor. The world does need to know about this chicken!Next time that I am in the area, I will be back for more.
It’s a wonderful dining experience. I brought my kids, my dad, my moms everybody!! No complaints at all. The food was on time. The server was nice. But there was a guy there Named BIG Coutry who worked. He was so knowledgeable and helpful. This establishment needs 50 stars. I like it so much.......I literally eat here like 3 times a week.Don’t tell my girlfriend ...I told her.... she has the best chicken....Gus’s Be Bussin!!
As far as taste this place is amazing! I’ve been coming here for years and the taste has often fluctuated. Today food taste amazing. I will add, I ordered a 3piece wing, add a leg and tender. My leg and tender came out hot while my 3wing plate came out cold. The Baked beans you could tell were sitting out for a long while. They charged me $.50 for ranch? And then gave me a half empty ranch container lol Okra was super crunchy/hard. But I cannot deny overall, good taste good
Very bad customer service waited on hold for 4 minutes before I hung up and called back to be put back on hold for another 4 minutes.. me being me called from my company phone while still on hold on my personal line and they answered immediately ready to take me order yet Im still on hold on my personal line.. when I mentioned that his response was oh my bad Can I take your order we as Black businesses must do and expect better
Super delicious fried chicken, greens, and fried okra. The service was very friendly also and the service was moderately quick considering it had a bustling business. I recommend you give it a try. Great fried chicken, beans, coleslaw and sweet tea!! Love waitress and Midtown location. Service was a little slow but worth the wait. Highly suggest if you want fried chicken and like it a little spicy. I will return
We were super disappointed for multiple reasons. The service was so slow. We had to keep asking for the same things. We waited a long time and the waitress had to be requested for service and still didnt achieve it.The chicken breast was undercooked. My boyfriend was grossed out and didnt even bother saying anything, because it ruined his meal. After something like that you lose your appetite and we are visiting from out of state.Table was dirty when we sat down.
Well I got treated to Guss yesterday thinking the fried chicken was going to be exceptionally great, but it was just ok. Im a cook myself so I critique food tasting differently than common people. The staff was great, but the food wasnt all that. I ordered a three peace white chicken dinner with a side of ockar and baked beans. The baked beans were cheap canned baked beans. They shouldve purchased Bushs Grilled Beans and I wouldve been satisfied with that but they didnt.I let them know, that the baked beans were terrible, and they replaced them with an order of potato salad after Id basically finished my eating my chicken. I think it success is based on its area ,and the lack of fried chicken competition in the area for people who live in overly priced Mid Town Detroit. Its OK, but its not better than the Fried Chicken I cook at home, and its not better than Popeyes or KFC.🎤Drop.
My boyfriend introduced me to Guss a couple years ago. I dont frequent going out to get fried chicken because of how bad it can be for your health, but life isnt fair and I have discovered this place, and now Im not looking back anytime soon. Seriously some of the BEST I have ever had. Fried to PERFECTION while still remaining juicy and flavorful. The chicken has some heat but it is of course even better dipped in crystal hot sauce. Make sure to have a beverage with you during this meal incase the heat starts to creep up on you. It certainly is not as hot as a Nashville hot type chicken, so maybe I am a bit wimpy sometimes, but still trek on. Their sides are just as good for a well rounded delicious meal, from baked beans, greens and mac & cheese. Let us not forget the little baby angel pie that has graced us with its presence. The chocolate chess pie. It is amazing heated up or cold. I have yet to try the regular chess pie, but SOOOOOON.The customer service is always consistent. The staff are friendly and efficient. We just were able to eat inside the last time we went, but the bar seats are still blocked off. They normally have beer and cider on draft, but not sure if they are still serving any of that during the pandemic.I will not touch another piece of fried chicken if it isnt from Guss, so my advice is, dont waste your time on subpar chicken elsewhere, and go for the best.
I finally went for myself and I gotta be honest it was better than I expected. It was definitely way better than KFC Popeyes and Captain Jays ! I took a bite and my first impression was that it didnt taste like nothing but then the flavor and spice hit me. I wasnt asked about a choice between mild or hot it came spicy and I could handle it but a young child wouldnt be able to eat this. It is a bit more expensive but overall I was satisfied and content with what I got. I will definitely be going back soon !
If your server is LaTashsaM, get up and leave. Go find something else. I dont think Ive met a less motivated, less driven person in my life. Seems even speaking is a difficult challenge for her. Mumbled what can I get you and went to sit in her corner, on her phone the entire time. Food would have been good if they werent out of okra, sweet tea and jalapenos. We were a family of white folks, so that could have contributed to her attitude.
The chicken was pretty good. The service however was terrible. I ordered in person and sat there for nearly an hour while others placed and received their orders. I politely asked a couple of times about my order after waiting over a half hour and the kitchen barked back WERE WORKING ON IT! When my order was finally ready, the woman helping me apologized for it taking so long but the other two women behind the counter just started making fun of her for trying to be kind and accommodating. Oh, and our order was wrong so our 6 year old didnt get the mac and cheese he was looking forward to.
I’ve never had so many issues picking up deliveries than this place. Nothing is ever ready. Today I had to cancel again cause an order placed 45 mins before I got there wasn’t ready 15 mins before I got there. One girl was like “we are boxing it right now”, only for nobody knew what happened to it 5 mins later. And her attitude of not caring was like why even do this. Other people need work if u don’t want to be in customer service.
Extremely disappointed! Chicken tenders very dry and unseasoned. It was hot with a tang of spicy absolutely NO SEASONING. It was not greasy, IF it had flavor and not dry it wouldve been okay I guess. Fried green tomatoes were good. Sprite pop was satisfying. I dont mind paying for good hot food but today, my $17.00 was wasted, I wanted chicken!!! Customer service was very good everyone nice and gave prompt service. Im not sure if I will return. I couldve just went to Churchs chicken and had tasty, hot chicken.
No more. The last time I got a carry out the french fries were stale...and they continued their tradition once again. I was told the food was cooked to order...but that must have been with someone elses order. The chicken is spicy hot (skin only) but the meat is unseasoned and tasteless. To me, Popeyes is better and cheaper. Now i understand why they were not busy.
I Love their chicken! Its seasoned perfectly, doesnt matter if its the tenders or other pieces of the chicken. The food is excellent, their mac and cheese is awesome also. The staff is polite, restaurant is always clean. Fast service, great place to bring the whole family. Ive noticed how popular this place has become and Im so happy for them. No matter if youre visiting or a local if you havent been, I would definitely recommend anyone to try here. Great atmosphere, great service. Good to dine in or to go.
Off rip, chicken was delicious (but spicy also) so be warned. I’ve only ever done carry out when carrying here and experienced great service every time. Very clean as well, definitely would advise sitting at the bar. Finally tried their pie on my last visit. Sweet Potato and Chocolate Chess are flames!
Follow-up review. The food was still outstanding but we had a bit of a customer service issue. After waiting about 30 mintues for our food in a slow dining room, our server came over to tell us the kitchen had lost our ticket and we had to give her our order again. Stuff happens. My wife and I had both worked in restaurants so we know how it goes. Then about 10 minutes later the manager comes over and apologizes telling the computer system had gone down. (So was it a lost ticket or a computer issue?) She tells us the food will be right out. Shortly after, it arrives hot, fresh and delicious as always. We had hit fried chicken, spicy tenders, okra, fried pickles, mac n cheese, baked beans, slaw (Jess) and potato salad (me). Yes, we brought home a lot!The only downside was when the bill came their was no discount for the inconvenience. No offer of free pie, nothing. In my experience we definitely should have been comped something for their error. We had gotten there at 5:20 and didnt get out until just after 7. Thats way too long for that sort of meal!So great food but please step up that customer service game!
Glad youre in the D. Traveling for work I have visited other Guss locations in other cities. Definitely true to the original. Mac and Cheese is on point as well as the chicken. Highly recommend if youve never been and you enjoy a little spiciness on your chicken. Excellent addition to Midtown.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was very inviting. We came around noon on a Friday and it was very chill. Service was speedy and very pleasant. I ordered the 3 Wing Meal with Mac and Cheese and Greens. Chicken was perfectly flavored, not to Spicy and not over cooked. Perfectly crispy. Mac & Cheese was cheesy with nice flavoring. Greens was yummy. I tend not to use salt in everyday situations so i noticed the salt but they were still good. I definitely would come back.
Beware, if you order at or near 7:00 and want it delivered. Placed an order through Door Dash at approximately 7:15. Received the confirmation at 7:30; received another update at 8:15, stating that Door Dash couldn’t find a driver. Knowing Gus’s was closed, I called to see if I could pick my order up and was told that they didn’t have/hadn’t received my order. I’m not sure how Gus’s and Door Dash communicate but it has some flaws. I’m disappointed because almost everything is closed and I have no dinner but mostly because I love Gus’s. To add insult to injury, I now have to wait several days for a refund, so it’s a total “lose lose” kind of evening.
The place was nice and clean, but the chicken was wayyy to spicy for me... I wish they would have said something before ordering. I didnt order anything besides chicken. I dont think Ill ever go back because I dont like spicy food... ( Unless it was a mistake ) which I dont think it was, because my mother said her chicken was too spicy for her as well... what I will say is, it was Non-Stop people coming in to order so other people must like the place, So, its a no for me, but it may be a Yes for you..
I absolutely love this place. I dont agree at all with others who say the chicken tastes just like Chicken Shack. I cant stand Chicken Shack, everything is way too greasy and the locations arent clean. Guss has the best chicken tenders Ive ever had. They are huge, juicy (which is unheard of for white meat chicken) and the sides taste homemade.
The chicken was hot and fresh since they make it to order. it was very moist and juicy. the spice was subtle, but definitely there. the skin was nice and crunchy. i also had the mac and cheese and collard greens. the greens were good, but not anything too spectacular. the macaroni was just okay too. it kind of tasted like it was made with velveeta. overall it was pretty good and i would return!
Visited here mid afternoon mid week. Had to wait a while for the food but we weren’t in a rush and it was worth the wait. Good portion and very tasty. Well priced. Stand out was our server. She was really friendly and enthusiastic. She wrote us UK vacationers a long list of recommended things to do in Detroit, we ended up doing a lot of them. Can’t recall her name, I think it began with a D? She was a star - thank you!
I. Love. This. Chicken!!! Im from the south and this chicken is legit! It is definitely on the spicy side so if youre not into spice this isnt the place for you but if you are...youre in for a treat. The customer service is great and everyone is always friendly which is rare for a restaurant in the area unfortunately. I love it here and Im definitely a regular. Memphis is definitely in the building with this chicken. Fried to order.
I love this place I went there last weekend for the first time with a buddy. I loved the food it tasted really good. And their employees were really friendly and polite and didnt rush you It was a lot I mean a whole lot better than chic fil a. and I will be returning for more of their food soon.
OMG. I had heard about it and passed it many times and never noticed. The chicken is GOOD! Theres a little spicy kick at the end the skin is perfectly cooked. My only complaint is that its a bit pricey. The menu is small. They have sweet tea that they give you in plastic cups. Overall a good lunch experience.
Spicy, not greasy. A little heat, nice chicken flavor, and selection of sides -GREENS! Everything too salty. But to be fair, I find every restaurant too salty 😃 friendly staff and atmosphere. I give it four fast food stars. Real plates, bowls and silver ware would be nice - and eco friendly too!
Been here three times since theyve opened. Food has all been great. The chicken isnt spicy enough to my taste, but thats a personal preference and its got a good flavor. The okra tastes exactly like the stuff my Tennessee born and raised grandma used to make, which I always hated, but if authentic fried okra is your thing youll be happy. Mac and cheese, collards, and baked beans are all delicious. The service needs improvement, and thats why its a three star review instead of four or five. Every server Ive had has been friendly, but actually getting service is often a pain. I think it might be because theyre understaffed, at least the times Ive been, and/or they arent great about dividing the tables.Anyway, its the best fried chicken in Midtown so Im sure Ill be back.
The food is okay, but Church’s would have been better. I ordered a 3 piece dark plate with 2 sides. While the flavor and spice were tasty, the chicken was cooked so hard that the majority of it was inedible. The chicken pieces also looked like they came from a baby chicken. The baked beans were just canned beans that weren’t enhanced to taste like baked beans at all. Just a can of Campbell’s pork n beans warmed up.The fried okra was also cooked way too crispy. The sides were also very small. I mean a regular sized compartment styrofoam plate was used and there was probably 2 or 3 tablespoons of beans. The tenders were better. Very tender and juicy on the inside but still cooked a little too much because the outside was mostly inedible. The restaurant itself was very cozy and the waitress was very nice and friendly, so I’m giving her 5 stars, but overall 3 stars.
The chicken was very good, unfortunately I hate Cajun spices on fries and didnt realize thats what was going to be on them, but really thats just a personal preference and I should have asked. The staff is extremely friendly. The only issue I have is that I paid $16 for 3 thighs, medium fries and a small soda. I took it to go but if I had stayed, with tip that would have been $20 bucks for basically three pieces of chicken. Thats way too much. If its a once in a while thing to get some really good fried chicken, as it was for me since Im just visiting, then its like a treat and worth it if you really like fried chicken but I wouldnt pay that price often.
I like spicy, so the chicken was pleasing to my palette. Its not hot just a bit spicy, a little more heat than you typically get at a restuarant. If you dont like spicy, dont order the chicken. If you like FRIED GREEN TOMATOES they have them and they are pretty good, not spicy. Our waitress was great, we enjoyed excellent service, I cannot remember her name. BTW, the chicken was fried harder at the Cass location than at Guss in Royal Oak, on Woodward; in fact, it was a bit too hard for me and not as moist as the chicken I had from RO.
I thought I had already had the best fried chicken of my life at a small restaurant in Illinois that I make a tradition to go to everytime I go home to IL. THIS SURPASSES IT and took me 10 years of living in MI to try. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Now I don’t have to travel so far for delicious fried chicken! 5 stars!
Being from South Carolina, I have grown up eating some of the best fried chicken around, from many popular/award winning even famous eateries. Guss took my fried chicken experience to a whole new level. The crispy outside crunch with no filler I have only experienced once b4 ,and Guss crisp exceeded that broasted chicken. The extremely moist meat flowing with juice and deeply embedded ,spicy marinade seals the deal as one of the BEST fried chicken meals I have ever eaten!!!👍👍👍
I’m giving it 2 stars because it was edible, hot, freshly cooked chicken, but that’s really it. Nothing really outstanding or unique about the food, really just average with above average prices. Went there earlier with a group of work people, 8 of us, and it took over an hour to get our food once we placed the order. The place wasn’t all too busy either. Some of the orders were messed up with wrong sides, drinks, and amounts of chicken. I would just rather go to Popeyes, KFC, or even get a chicken meal from my local grocery store than go back there. Unimpressed and frankly let down by the hype.
Their food is great. Wouldnt try the hard cider they offer though. It tasted like tangy beer to me but if youre a beer drinker then go for it. The chicken tasted like death (good death, like the kinda death you get from being a glutton and ordering another plate lol)
World famous where? Maybe just in Detroit. I’m from the south honey, and this ain’t it. Chicken was bland, and they force you to get the worst sides (coleslaw and some canned pork n beans). I know pork n beans when I taste em. Then they want to charge you extra for swapping sides. And fried okra is not considered a side.
Put simply, the fried chicken here is perfection. It has a flavorful and light, but extra crispy coating, and the meat is so juicy it drips down your chin with every bite. I love that their menu includes a choice between dark vs white meat, so you can pick your own preference (dark meat ftw!). The fried okra and beans I had were great, but fall in the shadow of the main event. There is ample seating here, along with additional bar seating for those looking for a quick bite of chicken. Service was also excellent, and for a fried chicken joint, this is the cleanest one Ive ever seen.Ill definitely be back here!
Just picked up my order and they straight up didnt give me any of my 8 piece dark meal! Now its after hours and I cant get my food or leave a message. Very unhappy.Update: called the next day. Manager Gary was more than happy to give me a free 8 piece dark meal that day no questions asked. I just walked in, the cashier already knew who I was and why I was there, they handed me my food with a smile and no hassles. This place is great. Awesome food, own up to their mistakes and make it right. Great business.
They fell off....or we came on a night with the worst cooks.Chicken tasted like it was re-fried.Mac was luke warm.Greens tasted fresh out the can.Couldn’t order an Arnold Palmer because the tea wasn’t made.Best thing was the fries...and when we left the cooks were smoking weed outside by our truck.Last time at Gus’s for us😒
Usually pretty good. Unfortunately today after eating some of my chicken a piece wasnt completely cooked. When I asked my waitress if she could take it off my bill her reply was I basically ate it? I would have loved to finish it but its fine. Gus use to be a regular stop of mines but no more.
The chicken was awesome if you like semi spicy chicken they are huge down south they only serve chicken but a variety of sides. The meals are under $10 and its a good spot to eat and experience a cool setting. The place is in low key mid downtown area and size is like Panera bread just to keep in mind if you have a large party accompanying you.
So my coworkers and I always order from here. We work at local funeral home. Today we placed an order for 4 people. I drove to pick up, my order was the only one not in order. Called and notified of error. Went back to get mine. Was treated as if I was lying by several people in establishment. Sat for 10 min only to b told it would take 20 min. For a wing and breast. Will never go to this establishment again.
The reason for 4 stars is the service. It was the only thing that I didnt love. I went on a busy night but the server rushed us to order seconds after entering the restaurant. Then continued to rush us until we left. Apart from that, the chicken was great and the price was fair. But the sides were disappointing. Overall, Id recommend buying an 8 or 16 piece to go and get your sides else where.
Excellent fried green tomatoes. Excellent fried chicken. Piping hot, juicy. Well spiced. I explained to my dining companion that it isnt quite authentic home-fried southern, but for a restaurant its as close as youre going to get. It would be nice to have a beer and the bar makes you think you can, but they evidently dont have a liquor licence. But all things considered, I will be making this a regular dining spot. Addendum (a few weeks later): So I walked in tonight and discovered they have begun to serve beer. Nice microbrewery selection on tap. Oh, and another thing. The warm pecan pie rocks!
Stumbled down here after the African world festival. Was not aware that they only sold spicy chicken. Luckily my 6yo daughter was up for the challenge (fail). The waitress wasnt attentive at all, we assumed due to the large crowd, but the other waitress had no problem fulfilling our needs. The food was OKAY, nothing to write home about. I would give the chicken alone a 5, it is the sides that brought the rating down to a 3.
Great service! Ive been craving Guss chicken since I had it in the Memphis area earlier this year. I was pleased that it tastes exactly the same. Made a mistake thinking that the gated parking lot could be used while I ate, but its not. Hey, it was open & there wasnt a sign saying I couldnt use it. So park on the street nearby.
Came in the day before order fries they was well done and very heavy on of salt. Came in the next day and talk to the manager and she said that there was nothing she could do for me . It was a $2.65 order of french fries and she could not accommodate me horrible service horrible manager.
Stopped here due to good reviews, I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into the drumstick and a few seconds later the heat kicked in, it was mmmm delicious! The chess pie slice I had was way too sweet otherwise I would have given a 5 star. The mac-n-cheese was done well and plenty of cheese. Definitely will be back again.
I’m actually mad at myself for not having tried this place earlier in life. A friend and I were like “let’s get a quick bite and try this place out”. 10 minutes later we’re savages sacrificing our own internal organs just to get another tiny piece of meat off dem bones. The fried chicken is spicy, but not like Nashville hot chicken, just like a nice spice that kind of feel hot, but that’s called flavor. Baked beans all slammin. Service, excellent. Price- inexpensive. 10 stars.

2022-01-28Deliciously seasoned and amazingly crispy skin with juicy chicken to the last bite. Only wish it was larger pieces. These looked rather small for their size. The sides were good, not overly salted and accompanied the chicken very well. Reasonably priced. Would recommend and would go back.

2022-05-02I kind of figured fried chicken is fried chicken but I was wrong. Guss is soooooooo good!! Everything we ordered was perfect and delicious. My mouth waters every time I think about it. Ive got a list of people I want to take to Guss so they can experience it too. And yes, this sounds crazy cause its a fried chicken place, right? But it really is that great! Go now!

2022-01-20I placed my order at 6:13pm, the cashier was very nice and efficient. I ordered the 3 piece dark and asked for fries instead of the standard sides; I was charged extra. The price of my meal went from $9.45 to $11.08 just for substituting out the sides. Im not terribly bothered by this, but it is definitely annoying...these are not premium sides we are talking about here. So I waited in my car for 12 minutes then came inside to check on my order. Still not ready but I saw a few employees packing orders so I figured it would be up next. Over the next 15 minutes, I counted 3 employees prepare plates for themselves to eat. This place only makes fried chicken for the most part, everyone that made the exact thing I had ordered and paid over 20 minutes ago but I was unimportant apparently. I ask the cashier about my food and she says it will be another few minutes and offers me a beverage for the wait. I declined because I was annoyed and just wanted my food. I asked her to replace the fries they had for my order because I had been watching them sit out in the counter for 15 minutes while the employees made themselves fresh fries and chicken. She said she have them drop new fries for me. After a few minutes she gives me my order. I should have checked my order, had I done that I would have simply requested a refund and we wouldnt be here...unfortunately that didnt happen. I arrived home and discovered they had completely scammed me! The fries that I had to pay extra for were burnt (they put the fries that had been sitting out, back into the grease) and the portion size was unacceptably small; when I usually order this I am given about twice as many fries. Even the chicken was terrible. Very boney, very little meat and quite over cooked. To be fair, the food is usually very good but service generally leaves a bit to be desired.

2021-07-03If you’re looking for fried chicken - this is your place. Beyond the chicken the sides of slaw and beans were so good too! The whole place has a relaxed demeanor and “sit back, eat chicken, and relax” vibe. It was great! Great place and the inside is much than anticipated!

2022-07-09My fav place for fried chicken. I first ate at Gus’s in Chicago and then looked them up when I moved this side of the state. Amazing juicy crispy chicken for super reasonable rates. Pleasant customer service as well. Love the vibe as well!

2022-06-30The chicken tasted great, but oh my God they are incredibly slow and their customer service is heavily lacking. Four different times people from my table had to get up and go to the counter to request a drink refill. It took almost 40 mins to get our food (4 person table, 12 pieces of chicken total). When the food did come, the fries were cold. The portion size on the sides were embarrassingly small. Again, the chicken is great, but everything else about the experience will stop me from coming back.

2022-06-19The food is good but they need better customer service at the counter. Almost waited an hour for my food and it was sitting on the counter for at least 25 minutes because no one said my order was up.. yet the girls at the register laughing and joking with each other the whole time. do better
