Chapter OneAs I walked into the establishment, the air was filled with anticipation as we awaited to be seated. The service was very professional and quick to respond to my familys witty remarks. The water, though it may only look like city water, came from only the finest springs in Michigan. We sat at our grand, round table under glistening lights and surrounded by nautical decor. The food described in the menus made no comparison to the food that eventually sat in front of me. Smells of every type of meat wafted through the air, and as it plopped into my mouth, I knew that this was where I wanted my ashes to be placed. While this may have looked like a regular family outing, it was anything but. Our family was celebrating my grandmas 100th birthday, and as our plates started to empty, the doubt started to creep in. What doubt, you may be asking. I doubted whether or not my grandma would be receiving a birthday treat from the staff (which, I may add, is the only advantage of coming to restaurants on your birthday). When all hope was lost like the food on our plates, our waiter came out, his glasses perched carefully on the bridge of his nose, carrying, you guessed it, a birthday treat. It was the most grand hot fudge sundae I had ever laid my eyes upon (it was tasty too, she let me have a bite or two). At this, I KNEW a review on the Google was necessary. With full stomachs, we made our way back home, knowing if we ever had any more birthdays, they would be celebrated at Hack-Ma-Tack.
My friends and I came in last night for dinner and the staff was extremely accomdating. The front of house staff was upbeat, and friendly. Our Server was attentive, and on top of all our requests. made. She made our experience there one Ill never forget. The cooks prepared some of the most delicious, hot, and flavorful dishes. The drinks were perfect . I would visit here if your in the area.
Cute vibes ! my little sister and i used to love watching the animals that would come eat the left over bread out of the feeding dish. there’s also a spooky haunted vibe you get here. ask the staff for some ghost stories! the bar has great drinks & the food is pricy but a fun little date night. i’m vegan, so i am pretty limited on options. the baked potatoes are very good though ahahahah.
First off, the food was excellent. The duck and prime rib were both fantastic. Our waitress was great. She did a lot of running, but still managed to stay on top of things. The view is great. If you cant enjoy the river, then you wont like this place. We sat right next to the window where the kettle sits and the raccoons come up at night and eat rolls. My grandson absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is fantastic as well. I only have 2 issues with this place. First, there is no air conditioning, so be prepared to sweat. It is HOT in there. Second...and this was my biggest disappointment...I didnt get to try any of the dessert. And it looked FANTASTIC!The menu is limited, but what they do, they do well.
I was there on June 26th of 2021 .Expected a great dinner for my wife and I .Terrible , had a crock of french onion soup , it was the worst , and 10 bucks .Prime rib , tasteless , and chewy . Steak fries terrible . Wife had the white fish with almond on top .. tasteless , terrible . Way over priced . For terrible meal . Never will we go back . Sorry but true
Our dinner was great! We had 15 people and the helpful staff put us in a private room the porch, which had a great view of the river and boats driving past or parking to come in for a visit. The food, drinks, and service was perfect. This place has a great atmosphere and is an experience worth driving to. Well definitely be back to the Hack.
This is a northern Michigan classic. I love going for the atmosphere. We took the boat right to their dock. The place bleeds history and charm. The service is great. The steak is mediocre, over cooked and over priced, but you are paying for location. Get a bunch of appetizers like the whitefish dip and cocktails and call it good.
The first time I stepped into the Hack-Ma-Tack 35 years ago I fell in love with it. Northern rustic elegance with great food. The prime rib is a must. Never be in a hurry to dine as you will want to watch the boats go by. I have never had a bad meal or experience there. It is a do not miss destination if you are in the area.
Awesome rustic decor and river view!Four of us for dinner. Our appetizer, shrimp lenny was something I would not ever order again. Go to Douglas lake if you want that appetizer done the proper way. Our appetizer was served before we got our drinks. The waitress kept blaming the new bartender for delays. char grilled prime rib was average or below. The Halibut was absolutely tasteless. Trout was barely ok and white fish was ok. The food quality and service did not by any means justify the prices. First visit and most likely last.
WOW, has to be a piece of heaven on earth, great people, nice family experience. I had the prime rib all so very tasty, really enjoyed the rustic Michigan setting, big pine trees crystal clear water, old wood docks and the wonderfully crisp Michigan fresh air. Desert was to die for. We will come again, Thanks wait staff and chefs, BIG number one.
Coming from a major city, I wouldnt call this fine dining. The prices sure didnt match their quality however I understand being open only a few months to justify the prices. People dress up or come in swimsuits so it is really odd. Menu is small also. Overall in cheybogan it is the best you will get but, nothing really special.
A perfect Northwoods atmosphere to celebrate our wedding anniversary - the food was outstanding, lovely views of the river, and our server Char was a delight. Perfect combination of rustic lodge and epicurean elegance, reminiscent of the Lake Placid Lodge. Thank you to all the staff!
Hackmatack is one of our very favorite northern Michigan restaurants! On the Cheboygan River, we love coming here by boat - good docking. The menu has just the right number of options and each are very good. My favorites are the perch and prime rib, great salads too! Staff and owners are outstanding. Beautiful setting on the water, nestled in the woods, building is gorgeous with rich old nautical/fishing/hunting decor.
This place is as hard to leave as it is hard to find! Very friendly staff and wonderful food. The owner met us at the door as we arrived and assured me that we we not the first ones whos GPS took them in circles near, but not to, this beautiful hidden treasure. Located in an extraordinarily awesome area on the Cheboygan River near where it flows into the incomparably beautiful Mullet Lake, this century old building provides a wonderful experience in itself. The staff, menu and chef take it the rest of the way to 5 stars! Ask Julie (hostess/owner) to show you the very cool tamarack tree outside the restaurant-- the type of which many of the hand hewn beams that are visible everywhere in this special place are crafted. I recommend the Walleye which is often on the special board, or the Prime Rib or Whitefish which are among their signature dishes. You will not be disappointed!
The Hack-Ma-Tack Inn is the perfect fine dining experience, while traveling, in northern Michigan. We frequent the restaurant every time we pass through town. Great atmosphere with great wine and food. The best prime rib! Boat in access, is a major plus, when staying on Mackinac Island.
Dubbed The Hackis a family owned and operated restaurant that offers an outstanding view of the Cheboygan River. The staff are friendly and knowledge, the food is superb, and the atmosphere is romantic.💞 The Hack is a great place to gather with friends for apps and drinks in the bar, a lunch or dinner when coming by boat, or a romantic dinner for two. If you are visiting the Cheboygan area, The Hack is a must visit destination. 👍

2022-07-02Very rude. The hostess (manager) greeted us and was very rude to the point that we left. Very unfortunate for the fine establishment. We pulled up on a boat and as soon as we walked in we were told that we had to leave because there was no room for us when the restaurant was 1/2 full. We will not be returning this summer.

2019-07-31Up scale. Not run of the mill. Great atmosphere. Awesome food. Wonderful service. Be prepared for surprising desserts also. The small Prime Rib is larger than expected! The grill isnt hot enough for thePittsburgh Style, but the cook is top-notch and we were very satisfied. The Coconut Cream Pie is the best served anywhere. Come by Boat or car. Enjoy the experienc!

2020-09-22Talk about history and old Michigan rustic ambiance, its dripping off the ceiling and walls. A must stop for historical buffs. The meal was good but not wow. My prime rib was room temperature and my wifes broccoli had no flavor. pretty good describes it. Id go back ... maybe next year.😁

2021-12-22Fine dining and spirits. Food is beyond good. Prices are pretty high, but the food is still worth every penny. The calamari appetizer is delectable! If I could afford to, Id eat here once a month!

2021-08-26Over the past 127 years, the good people at Hack-Ma-Tack have been honing their craft. Ladies and Gentlemen, the time is now. The menu,Cocktails on through to Dessert, has reached a sublime perfection. Will it be easy to get there? Absolutely not. Will your bill be inconsequential? Absolutely not. But you will be rewarded with one of the finest meals available anywhere in the Continental United States. Ask for Evelyns section.
