Despite my wedding set being purchased from this store less than 2 years ago, I was just charged almost $400 for routine preventative care on it. My advice- don’t buy anything here. Go where they stand behind the quality of the product they sell and where you aren’t treated like a second-rate citizen.
I have taken my treasured engagement ring that was my mothers from 1933 in to be repaired twice. Once to have the setting rebuilt and most recently to be repaired after I had a catastrophic fall and damaged it. They do wonderful work and the only place I would trust with my treasured heirloom!
I drove 35 miles to get the battery changed in my Shinola watch. She cant do it today. Youll have to come back tomorrow. Yeah, right. 70 miles round trip for a job that takes 3 minutes. I had the battery changed before. I KNOW HOW MUCH TIME IT TAKES TO CHANGE THE BATTERY.
This is where my husband bought my engagement ring, and I am glad he did. We later bought our wedding bands from here as well. I feel the rings we purchased here are extremely high quality, and the members of the staff were kind to us and knowledgeable. The lady who sold us our rings always recognizes us when we come in to get my prongs checked. They have a wonderful atmosphere.
Only disappointment was they had me walking out the door without a bag, only 2 envelopes with our necklaces in them. No offer of a bag. For a fancy place as such, I kind of felt like my business was not overly important to them. And that they had enough customers to keep them busy.
I recently got engaged and I LOVE my ring, however it was a little big for my small hands. I took my ring to Herman and Hiss to get resized. Upon walking into the store, I was never once greeted and waited almost 15 minutes until someone finally acted like they have enough attention to give me. I told her I was interested in getting my ring resized and she went and got someone else, and the lady gathered up her ring sizing instruments and rudely told me my ring was a 7 when I told her first that I didnt know what size it was because I did not buy it. Then she looked at it with her glass scope and proceed to RUDLY tell me that my ring was fake, nothing on my ring was real and that since its fake they cant work on it. Place my ring back in its box and slid it across the counter and said you can try the jeweler down the street. I left in almost tears because I knew my ring was real.I felt as if I wasnt given the costumer services that I deserved for a few reasons:1. Im a young female who was perceived to not have that much money because I walked into their shop with jeans and a jacket.2. my ring was not bought there.3. my ring was not a $50.000 ring. This company will NEVER be recommended by me to ANYONE. I WAS going to be a young LOYAL customer to them, but they have now lost out on my business and anyone who is associated with me.I did try the jeweler down the street Nelson and Co. and this jeweler was amazing. They took care of me, checked my ring 3 times and did a metal test on it, and my ring is 100% REAL and 14K gold and I got my ring back in 3 days!
Whent in after church so I was dressed above business casual. I was passed up by three employees. I am an Hispanic male and I normally don’t playThe race card, but this experience had me considering it. Two of the three employees actually made eye contact with me but walked so fast by me I didn’t even have time to even say anything to get their attention. My wife who is Caucasian said she had several Employees ask her if she needed anything. I was there with the intent on buying a watch but at this point I’ll find it somewhere else, was really hoping to help a local business.
As goldsmiths and jewelers, we’re always eager to visit other fine jewelry stores when we are traveling to new or different areas. While in Michigan last month, we had the pleasure of discovering Herman Hiss & Company in Bay City. Their ads in area publications had hinted at the special quality of this downtown store, obviously an integral part of the community and surrounding area. [Whenever heading out of town, we particularly seek out fellow American Gem Society (AGS) member stores, as membership requires commitment to ethical practices, as well as annual educational updates and re-certification.]From the moment we stepped inside Herman Hiss & Company’s unique interior, we were amazed. As we look forward to our own store’s 50th anniversary next year, the fourth and fifth generations at Herman Hiss are preparing for their 150th in 2017!! This is noteworthy, to say the least. When we introduced ourselves, Christine – fifth generation – and husband Nick generously treated us to a tour of their impressive space and behind-the-scenes organization. We heard snippets of HH’s illustrious history from several of the pleasant and attentive staff. Each eagerly shared pride in the store and its part in the community, as well as in their own service as “part of the Hiss family.” While the store itself exudes the feel of fine historical jewelry establishments, many displays of fashion forward collections are packed with choices of fun, affordable jewelry lines.Having recently celebrated the birth of a grand-baby, I was delighted at the extensive creative, fun selection of baby gifts – from socks to “blankeys” and books – as well as traditional silver and pewter baby cups and spoons. Confession: I left with a full Herman Hiss & Company bag of treats for our newest arrival, her little “big” sister, and two toddler cousins!Reflecting on our fun and inspiring visit, it seemed only right to take the time to write a peer review of this unique historic, and, increasingly, hard-to-find family jewelry business rooted in, and committed to, one’s community. Each and every person we met, whether employees or family members, went out of his or her way to make us welcome. All were attentive and knowledgeable, as well as dedicated to this extraordinary family jewelry business. That in itself kind of says it all.
Friend of mine took in a custom 25 carat blue oval sapphire ring he inherited- (Very wealthy family) probably worth $250,000,The woman there was extremely rude, Told him they weren’t doing appraisals that day was quite cold , Apparently my friend wasn’t dressed like money He’s not going back..

2022-05-25I had destroyed my original wedding ring at work and they were able to repair and customize it for half the cost of the box store I bought it from. It now looks better than when it was new!

2022-04-22They are always welcom8ng, responsive, engaging. Took my rings in to clean, discovered the prongs were worn, and v my gems c were at risk. They were also able to find a chip in the c stone- which is only seeable through the microscope. They hand clean my ring now and I now know to not put it in a cleaning machine - risking the gem. Very professional, patient, never feel pressured to buy. Bought a Reactor watch there for my son also.

2022-04-15My diamond wedding ring was caught on something, bent, and twisted. I was terrified that I would need to replace the whole thing! I went to Herman & Hiss and they eased my mind and offered me solutions that were priced so reasonably! They had my ring fixed and shined up, better than new, in one day!

2022-05-15I have had to take a ring to be repaired and a bracelet in to have the coast tightened. Both repairs were done in a timely manner, and HH staff took the time to explain the repairs that needed to be done on each piece of jewelry.

2021-03-07If you desire respect and good customer service, dress in your best attire and take a successful financial report with you. As I was dressed in jeans, it apparently appeared to them that I didnt financially belong in Herman Hiss & Company. I have experienced excellent customer service at two jewelry stores on the west side of the State. Having moved back to the eastside I was hoping I found an equally elevated jewelry store closer to home. I was appalled at the treatment I received. Notwithstanding the depressed service and cold greeting I purchased a gold chain. Subsequent to my purchase I returned home and searched and reviewed the website for Herman Hiss to find Im not the only one that experienced similar service, or lack thereof. Further, I discovered I should have been given a $25 loyalty award, as I spent over $400 on the chain and as stated in your policy, if I recorded on their site, I reached the threshold for a $25 reward in their program. This, of course, was not even mentioned to me at either of my visits, (ordered and pick-up) of my purchase. I will not return to that establishment, and if asked, I will truthfully explain my experience. They clearly read me wrong, which should not have been a factor. As for the chain, its too long for my diamond pendant, which the gentleman questioned if they were, in fact, real diamonds. I plan to give the chain I purchased to my daughter-in-law and purchase a shorter one at a classy and professional jewelry store, not Herman Hiss & Company.

2021-03-29I had an excellent experience here. It was an a prolonged decision process for me, but I never felt rushed or pushed in any way. I went back in 3-4 times to look at things again, make new comparisons, and evaluate anew, and each time I was treated with patience, kindness and fantastic service. I wound up speaking with several people during my visits and they all worked together to make this a journey that I wont forget. Thank you to everyone at Herman Hiss & Company, you made an impression and made a huge decision easy.
