They did a great job replacing my water pump and serpentine belt. Got my Jeep back to me in a good amount of time. My only disappointment was the cost of the repair because I was told it could have been done for less money elsewhere. I would recommend Hoover Street Auto to others however.
This is the 3rd or 4th time I’ve had work done to my vehicle and each time was a great experience! Tom and Ed were amazing at taking care of a lot of extra work with my extended warranty company and I was able to get all the work done on my car. My last trip here I was in and out in a few hours. Had some issue with my tierod and the team at Hoover had the work done before the afternoon. Always grateful to have trusted mechanics and auto body shop that looks to serve and take great care of their customers.
Hoover came recommended to me as a business that really knew Subarus but is also honest. I have been impressed with Hoover so far. Love the transparency of the generated reports. The texting makes it way easier to communicate w/ them. Ive had to get some pretty big repairs here and have been happy. Its tough to find a mechanic you trust, but I do trust Hoover Auto and would recommend them to any of my family & friends.
My check engine light came on, so I knew I needed my engine checked out. After the initial vehicle inspection, Tom sent me the pictures and explanations of the repairs needed. He also took the time to call me and make sure I understood everything he sent. They were able to replace my gasket covers, 4 spark plugs, coil, engine motor mount, and oil change all in the same day as the inspection. The repairs also came with a 36,000 mi/3 year warranty. I highly recommend Hoover Street Auto.

Had a great experience at Hoover Auto last week! I submitted a request for an appointment on a Thursday, got a call to schedule the next day on Friday, dropped my car off Monday at 8am and had it back Tuesday by 4. Tom (& others) were very nice and kept me up to date on everything that was happening on my car via text and phone. The inspection report card-like system made it really easy to see what all needed priority attention and what could wait. Would definitely recommend Hoover to anyone in need of car services. Nice and convenient location to campus too to drop off a car and walk wherever need be.
Im a DIY guy and tried to diagnose my car troubles myself. Decided it was too much and went to Hoover on a referral from a friend. They got back to me within the hour. Although I was surprised at the extent of the damage, I was relieved to get a clear explanation including pictures.Got my car back in a few days and it runs like new. Its paid off in 3 years and Im confident Ill be driving payment free for many more thanks to the guys at Hoover Auto.
A really excellent, honest and thorough car repair shop in Ann Arbor. They provided a very detailed report (with pictures!!) of what was going on with my car and were able to fix it even though it was a tricky issue that other places had failed to fix. They also stood by their warranty when a light came back on and re-checked the issue to complete resolution.
I found Hoover Auto on Reddit after other shops messed up some basic repairs on my car. I took my old Honda for complete inspection and they gave very honest opinions. Since that day I am going with these guys as they won’t pressurize you to sell items you don’t need in your car. I recommend Hoover Auto to anyone looking for work done on their car. I have got work done on my car twice and really happy with the results. Car drives like a brand new one.
These guys were awesome. I had major repairs needed the weekend before driving across the country. They had it in and out all in the same day and were super transparent when walking me through the repair estimate. It’s nice that they use photos to show exactly what’s wrong with the car. They also answered my questions after picking it up on that Friday afternoon right before closing. Would definitely recommend them.
I called Hoover Street this afternoon to ask about removing/drilling out license plate bolts that had sheared off. Tom was fantastic, he had me come by the shop immediately, removed the old bolts on the spot, replaced them with new bolts, and wouldnt accept any payment. Less than an hour from calling the shop to driving away with the issue fixed. I will definitely be returning to this shop when I need further maintenance done on my car.
After going to several different shops, Hoover St was by far the most personable, kind and patient place I encountered. Tom was very attentive to my car’s needs and explained everything to me in detail. I feel lucky to have this place as a neighbor!

I have taken two different vehicles here a number of times throughout the past couple years, and I have always been so impressed with their service. They have such friendly customer service and their prices are honest and fair. My cars interior has always been left as clean as when I brought it in, which other repair shops Ive been to havent done.
The guys at Hoover Street Auto Repair were super helpful when I needed to replace a brake light. One of the screws was stuck in place, so they spent about 5 mins trying various tools to get it off and then put the new bulb in for me at no charge! They were extremely kind and I would definitely return if needed.
I feel so lucky to have found Hoover Street. Other shops were booked out for over a week .I understand that they have two facilities and can get customers in quickly. I was in town for the Art Fair and needed to be able to get back on the road. .I can in the day they said and was finished by 3in The afternoon. I want to thank their team for taking care of me.

Ive been taking my Subaru Forrester to Hoover for years now, and have always been very pleased with the service I receive. While they are pricier than some other places, Ive been happy to pay the difference knowing they do a great job.
We got a flat tire a few miles away from Hoover St. and pulled in unannounced on a Friday morning. They were kind and eager to help...we left our tire with them and they had it fixed by the time we got back from breakfast. They went above and beyond and we are very pleased with the service we received!

Hoover Street Auto Repair is the only place we will take our Subaru. They know the vehicles, the service is great, the prices are more than competitive, they keep you informed every step of the process, and they do not pressure you to do unneeded work.
Brought in a 2005 new-to-me vehicle. Staff was patient with my questions while calling around for quotes, straightforward, and did excellent work. Price was fair and I will use them again. My car was also in and out in less than a full day.

One day my tire pressure light went on despite the fact that my dad had my car checked out before I came out to college with it. Nonetheless, I was scared that I might get overcharged and I wouldnt even know as I know nothing about cars, but Hoover Street Auto Repair worked to find out what was wrong with the tire and found nothing, so they just reset my tire pressure to the exact right amount and charged me nothing. This came as a surprise as I was expecting to pay at least something but I payed nothing at all. Overall, they are very professional, on time, and good quality from my experience.I now go there for any car problems Im experiencing!

I’m on the hunt for a reliable used car for my daughter and brought two possible candidates to Hoover Street Auto Repair for a pre-purchase inspection. They were very busy and couldn’t get me in for a full inspection, but took time to look the cars over. The quick inspection revealed several critical issues with both cars, saving me thousands of dollars. Christian and Tom wouldn’t take any money for these inspections since they weren’t able to get the cars up on a lift and do a full inspection. They were professional and incredibly helpful and I’ll be bringing my own vehicle here for service from now on. These guys are great!

My daughter had an issue starting her car, which led to us towing it to Hoover Street Auto Repair. It turned out to be a easy fix but Tom and his team did a thorough assessment and got my daughter on her way quickly. This is the first time Ive been compelled to leave an online review for any business, good or bad, and its been a year in the making. Ive owned a variety of vehicles and worked regularly with a variety of repair shops, large and small, mom/pop and national chain, foreign and domestic, etc. Ive taken my cars and SUVs to multiple businesses regularly enough to be on a first-name business with most of the staff and even have their personal contact info. The service Ive gotten at Hoover St. has been far and away the best of any of them, and Im certain none of the staff even know my name (as Ive only needed to visit the shop and handful of times over the last few years.) Ive at times felt disregarded at other shops after voicing my concerns or observations, but the staff at Hoover St. has been nothing but respectful and informative. It can be intimidating to come to any auto shop by yourself and expect to be treated fairly and taken seriously, especially as a young woman, but that has never been an issue for me here.
We have been using Hoover Street Auto as our only car repair shop for 20 years. Its hard to imagine a more pleasant and competent group of specialists. They are always very professional and super helpful, as well as very transparent about quotes and costs for services BEFORE they do them. Theyre very honest about what needs to be done and what doesnt, and Ive had a positive experience with all the staff members and mechanics who work there. Theyre very friendly and take excellent care of my car, its where I go for any car service I need!
Honest shop! They are great with communication about what’s important work to get done and what can wait. A bit on the pricier side, but reliable for sure. They super kindly did a quick fix when I was in the area and the undercarriage on my car started dragging, and they didn’t charge me for the help. Made my day!

I was in need of an auto mechanic that works on a Mitsubishi exhaust system. My usual mechanic was unable to secure the parts needed. I searched around on the web and found Hoover Street Auto Repair. They had great reviews, so I gave them a try. I wont be using any other mechanic again; Hoover Street Auto Repair is my go-to mechanic from now on. Extremely friendly, much lower price than anticipated, and super speedy! They had my quote within an hour and had my exhaust system specially welded in-house and rebuilt in less than five hours. Highly recommend giving them a call for your auto repairs!
I cannot recommend this shop enough. My battery died late in the day, and other shops said they could help me within a week or so. When I called, Tom acknowledged that they were also backed up with appointments for a week, but offered to look at it. My car was unusable and despite how busy they were, I was back on the road in less than 24 hours. They were efficient and kind, and will continuously have my business.
I rarely leave reviews for anything, but Hoover Street Auto deserves one. Ive been taking my car there for about 3 years now. They are always honest, fast, and very detailed. You will always be able to get an appointment within a few days and they are easy to get ahold of. They always call you to give you a quote and explain things before doing any work. I never feel like they try to force me to get unnecessary repairs. Last week, I brought my car in for what I thought was a fluid leak. They looked at it, it was an easy fix, and they did not charge me. Such great customer service and kindness! I will never go to another shop in Ann Arbor.

I spoke with Ed today because I live in Connecticut and I’m driving to Michigan on Friday with my Nissan Rogue 2015. I get nervous because I have 93,000 miles on the car and although I keep up with the maintenance very well I sometimes do some overkill just to prevent any breakdowns. Let’s face it, no one wants to have a problem with their car right in the middle of Pennsylvania!! I spoke with Ed because I was concerned about the coils and thought as long as I was there, just to be safe maybe I should have them replaced. He reassured me that at that mileage I should be fine. They are not due for replacement until 100,000 miles and didn’t see any need to just replace them if I’m not having any issues. He was not in a rush to take my money and offered to even do an inspection before the trip home if I was nervous. What a lovely, polite gentleman. There should be more places like this and people like Ed. Highly recommend this shop!!!

I had a fantastic experience with Hoover. I am relatively new to the area and didnt know where to take my car. Luckily I was referred to Hoover where I received swift and kosher customer and mechanical service. I now feel confident driving off to the Wild West on my first ever road trip.Also, I learned after servicing my car that Hoover has a built in rewards system which provides clients with the option to channel their rewards towards future visits OR a select nonprofit. I find this to be reflective of Hoovers awareness of the importance of community support and how expenses of vehicular maintenance can be a barrier for many individuals.
The customer service at Hoover Street is fabulous. Helpful, reliable and trustworthy. We had a problem with our A/C and the service repair shop at the dealer said it was our air compressor (which was shocking to us given the age of our car) and quoted us a pretty high price for a repair. We took our car to Hoover for a second opinion and the skilled mechanics there diagnosed the true source of our problem (not the compressor) and fixed it with no hassle (and at almost half the cost). Cant say enough about how great this shop is.
A few weeks ago I got the dreaded news that my 2009 Subaru Forester was experiencing head gasket issues. As many Subaru owners know, this is both a pricey and frustrating diagnosis. Do I repair the parts? Or do I trade it in? After weighing my options and deciding to repair I called several mechanics in the area. Some never returned my calls, some quoted but never really worked on a Subarus before, and all of them gave a vague explanation of the issue and possible fixes. Until I found Hoover Street Auto Repairs website. They provided in detail description of the issue, possible fixes, and within a day of submitting for a quote had a detailed response for me. Ed, answered all my questions, no matter how small. He made sure I understood everything that was going to be done and followed up with me everyday they had my car letting me know where they were at and if we were on track. The best part, I never once had to go in person. I spoke to Ed via the phone and email. I was able to drop off my car after business hours using their secure key drop box/lock box. Will definitely be coming back for future repairs.

Hoover Auto is GREAT! Ive taken my car there several times. Most recently, I had to abandon my car nearby due to a severe scraping sound that sounded unsafe to drive. They were able to squeeze me in between appointments to diagnose the cause---some debris got into the undercarriage and dislodged a heat shield into my break pads. They fixed the issue quickly and for a minimal cost. I had my car back just a few hours later. Very kind people.

Hoover has been my go-to mechanic throughout my time in college. Mike and Ed have helped me and my sister deal with car problems fairly and quickly time after time. I always feel that theyre giving us the best service they can for very fair prices.Something to consider as a college student in the area--whenever they do work on a vehicle, they create a comprehensive online checklist of problems with the car. This was ideal for my father who doesnt live in Ann Arbor because he could check the status of the car from home and feel confident theyre doing the work they need to.Hoover will forever be my familys Ann Arbor area mechanic, and I highly recommend them!
I just moved to Ann Arbor and desperately needed my car serviced. I usually just take my car to a dealer because it is easier, but I decided to give Hoover Street a try because of the reviews. I was not disappointed. They had my inspection done within an hour of dropping my car off, and didnt push me to repair everything that was wrong, as I am looking for a new car and just wanted to make my current one safe to drive. They sent me a detailed description of everything they inspected with pictures included. My car was done by 4:30 the same day, which never happens at the dealership. I couldnt pick up my car until later because I work a late shift, so they put my key in a lock box so that I could get it after work. Overall, it was a great experience as a newcomer to Ann Arbor. I will definitely recommend them to all of my friends!

Update: Hoover Street Auto was there for me in the middle of the quarantine when my car just stopped working. They took my car in a respectful, cautious and no-contact manner. I felt completely safe. They also performed the needed work on time and at a reasonable cost.Hoover Street Auto is exceptionally honest, reliable and fast.Professional from start to finish! I was treated with respect and kindness as I explained the history of my hybrid vehicle and what I thought needed to be addressed. When the work performed was communicated to me later, it was made clear what should to be done asap and what could wait. Living within a budget, that was extremely valuable to feel at least a little in control of my $. I will be back.

I was having trouble with my dashboard. All sorts of lights and icons suddenly lit up while I was driving on the expressway. They squeezed me in and also checked my car over and even had time for an oil change. Very nice people to do business with
Having worked as an ASE certified technician, in the past I have performed my own repairs and maintenance on my 04 Vibe. Currently, I commute one hour to work full time in mental health care and have a full time class load in college. Getting my vehicle serviced quickly was fairly important to me.Hoovers after hours drop off and pick up was flawless and extremely convenient for me. I dropped my car after-hours on Thursday, and was contacted first thing in the morning on Friday. Technicians took clear photographs of failing parts and sent them to me via text link. Customer service and technicians provided me with timely updates, and my vehicle, which required control arm replacement, valve cover gasket replacement, full brake service, and exhaust repair was completed before 5pm the same day. To pay, I was sent a link via text and made my payment online. After payment was received, Hoover texted me a lock box number and one time combination to retrieve my keys.Pricing at Hoover is fair and competitive. They are not the cheapest shop, but they are far from the most expensive.Friendly and professional contact free service. I would absolutely do business with them again.

As an addendum to my review from earlier today: The general manager from Hoover Street Auto contacted me within a couple hours of my posting. After a discussion, I do believe that this business means well and cares very much about their service. I cant claim to fully understand the technical explanation offered, but, nonetheless the bottom line seems to be a communication breakdown. Mike was apologetic for my experience at Hoover and receptive to my feedback. Hes making changes with his team regarding how certain repairs (and what they entail) are communicated to the customer.

This was a few years back but leaving a review now. Brought in my car since my AC wasn’t working. They said they would see what the problem is. They did a $200 diagnostic test without my consent beforehand. This was not given to me in writing beforehand or told over the phone. When I went to pick up my car, they said they couldn’t find an issue and that the AC was working find, which it was to my surprise. I swore it wasn’t when I left it there. Either way, if there were not issues with the AC, why did they do a $200 diagnostic test? Also interesting how they didn’t tell me about the test before they did it. I ended up paying $100 because I refused to pay for the full $200. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have paid anything.

Just had my car serviced (June 2020) and I can only say again what I said the last time I reviewed Hoover Street Auto Repair: Ive been getting my car serviced at Hoover Street Auto repair for nearly 20 years. Theres a reason I keep coming back: Hoover is the best place to take any car for regular maintenance, engine care and repair---basically anything under the hood. The management and people who work there are friendly and prompt. Work always gets done on time. Best of all, Hoover earned its trust from me by always being honest about work that needs---or doesnt need---to be done. Great place!

Not only did they make quick work of a problem that had stumped other technicians, but they gave me a loaner car to use for transportation while my car was being worked on and they gave me frequent updates on how everything was going. I cant speak highly enough of my recent experience. I brought three cars to Hoover for a pre-purchase inspection and it saved me many thousands of dollars plus a lot of headaches. They worked me into what was clearly a very busy schedule and were very clear and patient.
Ive been taking my 2 vehicles to Hoover Street Auto for the past few years. They are polite, honest and offer great service and communication. Most importantly, they provide top quality maintenance and repairs and always do their best to get my vehicle back to me as quickly as possible. They arent exactly the cheapest around, but for an Ann Arbor location and the services offered, its worth it for me.

Im not that good with cars, but I know that I need to take care of mine. Called ahead to ask for prices and if they could replace a headlight that went out. Tom replaced my headlight in less than 10 minutes and was kind enough to cover it for me. Super attentive place, he listened to my probably repetitive and basic questions and explained/answered them very simply and professionally. If I ever need anything else done Im coming to Hoover.
Took my car in for some battery trouble, and a leak was found in my transmission coolant line as well. The team at Hoover was able to repair the leak and straighten out the battery trouble for a reasonable price and got it all done the same day. Throughout the entire process Tom was honest, straightforward, and in constant communication with me about my car.
I just moved to Ann Arbor and had a serious car issue. I googled auto shops and based on reviews decide d to take my Subaru Hybrid to Hoover Street. I am very happy with my decision. They were very responsive, kept me updated on service repairs and were willing to work with me to find a less expensive solution to the car repair. I HIGHLY recommend their service.
I have been going to Hoover Street Auto for nearly 10 yrs. They serviced at least 5 cars for us. They do a great job. Knowledgeable, honest efficient. Mike is excellent. He really tries to run his shop with integrity and customer service in mind. Clean too! Before Covid, they served up a good cup of Zingermans coffee.
These guys are so friendly and easy to deal with. Service was top notch and my car, which had a lot of problems I had been neglecting, is good to go now. The prices are affordable and you can tell they’re not trying to take advantage of you in any way. Wouldn’t go to any other mechanic in AA.

Got a new to me car inspected here today-was my first time there. I waited while they inspected. Mike came out with the things that needed to be done. Being a bit of an older car, there were a few things, but he easily prioritized them, and we did the most important things today. Not only was it a doable price, but I also got a discount for being a first time customer! Everyone was very friendly, and everything being done was shown to me on my car, and explained very clearly. I was not sold anything I didnt need, and the work was done the same day. I even received a phone call update in the middle of the day! I am always impressed with the work done by Hoover Auto mechanics. These are great guys who just want to help you out, and theyre very honest. I had an issue with my car, and though they couldnt find anything wrong, they checked and double checked it for me. After all those checks, they didnt even charge me a penny because they didnt do any repairs on the vehicle. These guys are great. My college daughter needed her tail light replaced and the tire pressure light also was on. They took her in right before closing and took care of the minor repairs and sent her on her way in just a few minutes - with no charge! Awesome service. Well definitely be back when larger repairs are needed.
The customer service here cant be beat. Everyone we dealt with was so friendly and our work was completed in a very timely manner. My college daughter was also treated with respect. This was a great place to temporarily fix my stuck sunroof. I was visiting Ann Arbor when it got stuck and we were concerned about traveling back with an opened sunroof. I got there and Tom take a look at it and fixed it probably in 20 minutes. They did not charged us since it was a quick and temporary fixed. I strongly recommend this place and I will have it in mind when I move to Ann Arbor.

I had the best experience for car repair service that I’ve ever had. AHONEST. HONEST. HONEST! After looking at my car they gave me a really clear description of what was wrong with the car and whether it was a good investment to fix the problem. (The car had some many problems, that to Fix what I brought it in for, would not be worth it.) I called and spoke to Ed about my daughter’s car window. It would not raise back up. He gave me a time to come by and came out to the car and worked to get it back up. I initially chose Hoover Auto St on a whim, based on its convenient location and positive reviews, but stayed a customer for several years because of the excellent experiences Ive had with them. Mike, as well as all of the other employees, have consistently provided outstanding auto service, as well as customer service. Theyve done great work on both vehicles Ive brought to them over the years (2002 Honda Accord, 2011 Jeep Wrangler), and I always felt the team was very honest, and never once tried to talk me into additional work that I didnt need.When I bought my new Wrangler, and still owned the Honda Accord, I took the Honda in for one last check-up to see if any work needed to be done before I sold it. About a month later, before I even put it up for sale, Mike called me and said he had a customer looking to buy a used Honda, and gave me his number. I sold it to that customer less than a week later! That is the kind of above-and-beyond service Ive received at Hoover Street Auto.Id still be a customer today, if I hadnt moved to Boston, and I miss having a shop that I can trust like Hoover.

Someone knocked the mirror off my car the day before I had to move. I was shopping around last night desperately trying to get the best quote from different auto shops, after a Canton dealership quoted me so much for a repair cost on a leak they found during a car inspection yesterday. I almost cried when I saw the number on the quote. When I called one of the shops in AA, I was recommended by another repair shop’s owner who’s apparently related to the owner of Hoover auto repair to give them a shot. I spoke with Mike last night and he asked me to bring in the car this AM. About an hour or so later, I dropped my jaw on the floor when Mike only quoted me less than a quarter of what I was quoted from a dealership in Canton. I almost couldn’t believe what I heard that I had to have him repeat the dollar amount and explained to me what they really found! He printed me the quote for my husband to see. I’m SO glad I went to Hoover auto repair today! Mike and everyone was nice and professional. This really shows that not only they care about fixing your car but also about saving your money! I seriously recommend people to mark this place as your go to place for car repairs if you have foreign cars. Thanks for making my day, Mike! You guys are the best!!

A family member recommended Hoover Street Auto Repair. They were polite and friendly, and turned around my car (which needed a new battery and brake fluid flush) in one day.I had taken in my car due to an issue with the battery, and Im very glad they tested the brake fluid - the moisture in my brake lines could have led to corrosion if it hadnt been caught!
I came here with high expectations due to the high rating, but I was disappointed. Ed is a scammer. He tacked on services I didnt explicitly ask for. He created confusion by speaking very fast when running through the work they would perform. I wont deny that I did in fact authorize the services, but I find it incredibly dishonest to not explicitly and clearly ask if I wanted the extra services. When I confronted him whether he thought what he did was shady, he did not answer and told me that the manager would call me back. I never received a call. I will not be returning here.

Great! Unfortunately the tensioner and serpentine belt had to be replaced, but the tech was able to quickly diagnose the problem and the repair was done the very next day. No nonsense, straight forward, looking for repeat business. And business was out the door- so obviously these guys are well liked. Happy to find a great mechanic in Ann Arbor after our move.

Convenient location and excellent service for a college student with car issues encountered on the journey back to campus. Very impressive diagnostic service communication via text message and over the phone. Seems like theres a new crew and the attention to detail is a work in progress. My hood was not closed properly and the oil change sticker said 47,000 when my odometer was at 147,000 and my door had a hand print of grease on it.

I started coming here for repairs because its walking distance from home, but the service is excellent and I wouldnt go anywhere else. Prompt service, good prices and very accommodating (for example, my muffler broke right before I went on vacation for a week and they agreed to just keep it there for the whole week). I know very little about cars but I will say Ive never had an issue with a repair. Theyre also very straightforward about what repairs or maintenance are really necessary for an old car like mine and what I should just as soon skip and not spend the extra money.
Don’t hesitate to see Roy or the other staff at Hoover Street. They are honest and fair in their work. I can’t give a higher recommendation. I normally repair my own vehicles and so I know when a repair shop is trying to pull punches. I’ve struggled with finding a reputable and honest auto repair shop in the past. But these guys have gone above and beyond to be fair and transparent with me and I think they will do the same for anyone.
I replaced the alternator on my car last year with a warranteed part, but it went bad less than a year later. I no longer had access to a lift and couldnt repair it myself, so I brought it to Hoover based on the good reviews. Mike was VERY professional and helpful and had no problem installing the free replacement alternator I brought in (most repair shops like to use their own parts) because of my unique situation. They also discovered another problem with my brakes that was unsafe and informed me of it so I could get it repaired. If I have any more problems with my car while in Ann Arbor, this is the only place I will be bringing it!
Every interaction I had with the people at Hoover Auto Repair was polite, helpful, and genuine. They quoted me an estimate and time based on what was most urgent to fix and what I could afford to have done. They were honest and informative throughout the whole process and at the end of it they completed the work much earlier than quoted and just under the cost they quoted me. I am very grateful for that because with two jobs I have very limited time and cannot afford to miss work. I will definitely be going back to them for future repairs (as Im sure my old POS will need them!) They deserve the business and it helps that theyre close - I could easily walk home or around campus while I waited for my vehicle.
Ive been to Hoover St. Auto twice now for work on an older vehicle. Being a student, the folks at Hoover were very understanding of issues with the car and trying to address them in a manner that was most reasonable. They were always willing to give lengthy and detailed explanations while giving all options (both good for them and bad for their business). I had a difficult job and opted to pull the car out of the shop due to financial reasons and other reasons. They removed a significant chunk of the labor costs used to find the cause and made sure to keep everything on file if I were to return and do the work.In all, I would highly recommend this shop. They certify their work and wont cut corners which is obviously very important in the state of Michigan (rough roads, rough weather, etc.) They truly show a love for fixing vehicles and like to work with the people who own them.

As my wife and I were trying to sell our car we met up with a person who was interested in buying. We told her up front everything that we knew was wrong with it. It needed a front brake job and a couple minor things that dont have anything to do with the ride itself. They wanted an inspection on the car and recommended Hoover Street Auto Repair. That was fine. But Hoover Street told us that the car had $2200 in repairs including transmission problems and that it was basically scrap. The lady offered $800 on our car which blue booked for $3000 and would have been sold by a dealer for $4000-5000.Needless to say we took it for a second opinion, from a licensed GM dealer and they had told us that the transmission had nothing wrong with it and that we only needed a front brake job and the front right sway bar fixed which would have ended up costing around $450 in total repairs.Clearly this women and someone at this shop were running a scam.
Worst possible scenario - Im traveling on I94, 5pm in Friday rush hour traffic. Car starts smoking and luckily the Briarwood Mall exit is next. I check for good reviews on Yelp and see Hoover St. Auto Repair is not too far away. When I call they are helpful and receptive to my problem though they close at 6pm. I drop off my car that night, stay with a friend and by 10:30 the next morning my transmission line problem is identified, fixed and Im on my way home for $250. The staff was courteous, helpful and expedited my service so I wouldnt have to camp out over the weekend in A2 with no car!! Now, I can add an A+ review to this great place!

Not only did he apologize, but he also wanted to know what happened, how it could be prevented next time, what they could do to fix the problem, and he gave me a full refund. After talking with them some more, I can tell both Brian and Mike (at the service desk) are both genuine guys who are not out to get your money. My family drove from NYC to Ann Arbor (10 hours) to drop off our daughter for freshman year at the University, and on the way our 14-year old Sienna developed a nasty rattle. The noise was so bad both my wife and I separately contemplated the possibility of buying a car in Michigan, or renting one just to get home. But that was unnecessary because the fine fellows at Hoover Street Auto fixed her up in time to get us home on schedule. They were polite, efficient, friendly, and went a little out of their way to help a non-local in need.
Been coming here a year and a half now. Very friendly service. Good people. Trustworthy mechanics. For instance, a while back one of their guys got my floor mat dirty ( I porbably would not have even noticed) with oil from their shoes because the plastic protection piece they use slipped. They told me before I got my car back and did their best to make it right offering me a few options: 1) they will clean it for me, 2) they will order a new mat for me at their expense. And they discounted the cost of service for my inconvenience. Through that experience and simply good service, they have earned a loyal customer.They are likely not cheapest place for an oil change, but they are thorough and the service is worth it. Their service was: synthetic oil, filter, and a courtesy inspection (tire pressure/wear, visual inspection, fluids, belts, hoses) and it cost me a little more than $30 (1/8/15).
These guys are great they took great care of the breaks on my van and at a perfect price. 4 rotors and pads for a reasonable price. Did I mention how quick less then 3 hours. Sent my wife and unlike some shops the did not try to bs her at all. They treated her with great respect. We also had the take care of the EGR valve again a great price and done in about an hour. When we need work done in the future and we will. We will make Josey Brake O our only stop.
Located in a great spot right next to the big house. I had a flat tire that needed a quick repair and I took it in hoping they could finish it before closing. Within a half hour I was out the door and wasnt charged a dime. Mike at the front was professional and to the point and really helped me out. I would recommend Hoover Auto Repair very highly!
Only go there if you are savvy in car repairs, otherwise they will overcharge you. I am a new car owner and brought the car there to fix a number of non-critical issues, change oil, etc. They called me back with an estimate, I said ok because I was in a hurry. When I got the document with description of labor and prices, though, it was pretty clear they just wanted to make money because I did not pay attention or genuinely did not know how simple or complicated certain things were. Here are some of the charges:$22.97 - Passenger Tail Light OutGain access through hatch interior. Remove connect and replace bulb. Test and verify repair. Replace interior hatch.$137.84 - Passenger Side Headlight OutRemove headlamp assembly. Inspect wiring harness. Disconnect and remove socket from headlamp. Follow proper measures to avoid contact and handling with HID bulb. Install bulb. Test and verify repair. Reinstall headlamp assembly.$160.81 for a job that took at most 15 min total. Hope they feel good about it.Should I mention that they also got the most expensive parts among those available?I am gradually learning, I now know how to replace the bulbs on my car myself. And, of course, I am not going back to this place even for oil change (which was reasonably priced except that they chose the most expensive oil).Oh, and they also offered to diagnose a problem for $140, which a friend of mine diagnosed by just looking at the screen with the issue icon.
Unbelievable service - our daughters (out-of-state UM student) car wouldnt start, it was after 6pm, no one still open except towing service, and my daughter had to get on a plane to NH at 7am the next morning! We had it towed here, left the key, sent an email regarding the car showing up unannounced in their lot, and I got an unexpected email reply at 8:45pm that night from them!!! In spite of the fact that we had no idea how busy the shop was at the time, they diagnosed the problem, stayed in touch with us, and completed the car repairs before the end of the next day! Mike is great to deal with, explained everything in detail, and proceeded to get the car back in order in less time than it took to figure out how to pick the car up (because my daughter had come home this weekend). I would recommend these guys to anyone in the Ann Arbor area.
Always honest and up front about costs and finding the solution. I work on my own cars, and they have no issues with me taking the vehicle back if its something I have the tools and expertise to work on. However, if theres something Im not comfortable doing, Ive always received prompt service thats thorough.
Service is fantastic. They were able to fix my issue within two minutes. Would absolutely recommend a trip here if you need a repair or have car issues!
The Pros:Service is great, workmanship is top notch. The methods of communication are fantastic as well. Text updates and a digital inspection report with pictures and descriptions of recommended repairs helped me prioritize what I wanted them to do VS the easy stuff that I could do myself for much cheaper.The Con:Theyre not cheap. Easily 20% more than my local shop. I only take my car here out of convenience while Im at work (its extremely convenient for me). If youre looking to save money, definitely shop around.
I give Ed and these guys 5 stars because of outstanding customer service. I got my truck towed to their shop and it was fixed great In speedy time. They even did extra work that I needed and they didn’t think twice about looking out for me on the price. Thanks a lot. I will be back soon.

The service quality is good and their communication is good as well. However, I believe they overcharge you in same cases.First of all, based on my experience, most of the other car repair shops do not charge you for diagnosing the problem if you ask them to fix the problem afterward. They charged me $140, for just checking the problem with ignition switch. Its unbelievable! In my case, the ignition key used to get stuck sometimes. Its obvious that the problem is either with the key or ignition switch. What is the easiest thing to do? Yes, replacing both of them.They charged me $140 for just suggesting to change both keys and ignition switch!! Totally it cost me $650 to fix this problem for a Hyundai 2011!
The service was great all around! I brought my car in at 4 pm, they called with a diagnosis and quote at 5 pm, and I had it back by 10 am the following day. The work was great and the price was fair. I would definitely come here again for any future repairs.

EDIT: They brought my car in and fixed the headlight promptly this morning.I took my 2012 Honda civic in yesterday to have a headlight that was out fixed, as well as deal with a low tire pressure light. I got upsold on a number of other repairs including brake pads, rotor replacement, and a brake line flush ($1000).I dont know how to check my own brake pads and rotors, so as expected Ill default to highly rated experts. Thats fine.However, I picked up my vehicle today and when I turned on my lights this evening, the same one was out. My primary issue is that if the only visible thing I can easily checked isnt fixed, how am I supposed to know if the other things were a) actually necessary and b) done properly.If I come in and say my driver side headlight is out on a relatively new vehicle, it should be a question as to why. Why is it out? Should it have gone out this quickly? I mentioned I had had it in to be looked at previously, including for the tire pressure indicator. If I was fixing something I shouldnt expect to be broken, considering these would all be reasonable first steps in my diagnosing toolkit.I have to go on an road trip to Canada that includes night driving tomorrow and Im peeved Ill need to make other arrangements now.Overall they were friendly, responsive, and had a nice summary webpage explaining what was going on and what to make of it.

I have been going to this auto shop for about a year now, and I wouldnt want to take my car anywhere else. Today, however, is the reason that I finally decided to review. Today, they put a $300 part on my car for free.I took my car in for an oil change and some exhaust work. I knew my brakes were shaky, as well. They called in the morning to let me know the cost of the exhaust work, and that they should probably change out my rotors. Then they called again when they got into my brakes and they were worse than expected. Not the best news, but they were straight forward and honest about the worst case scenario. When I got in to pick up my car, they told me that my catalytic converter needed to be replaced to and that wasnt in the estimate they called me with. As I was mentally calculating the cost, they tell me that they arent going to charge me for it, since it wasnt part of the estimate. Blew my mind. What kind of shop doesnt charge you for a repair because it wasnt in the estimate they called with.I love these guys. I drive an older car, if the litany of repairs needed today didnt clue you in, and they are always straight forward and honest with me. They tell me clearly what is wrong and what the cost is, and they dont try to add repairs on that dont need to be done. They explain things when I ask, but dont talk down to me, which is important to me. Being a young woman, Ive often dealt with mechanics that will talk to me like I know nothing about my car but how to turn the key to start it. Finding one that doesnt was important to me. These guys dont treat me like that. Easily the best mechanics Ive been to.

Professional. One of my cars was locked up due to a brake issue and towed to them to inspection/repair. Even I decided not worth repairing; they were still willing to help and provided good incentive to the first time customers.Updated on 9-23-2015.They estimated about $1300 (including tax) for the brake repair. Due to the cost, I decided have the vehicle towed back home. The tow truck driver tried to help and found the emergency brake cable broke. Then I called Speedy and they estimated less than $500. I had the vehicle towed to the Speedy and they fixed the brake at $370. I really don’t know why is the big difference for the same problem repair. So, I updated three-star from original 5-star. BTW, the people at Speedy are friendlier.
Drove up to drop daughter off at U Mich. Major rear brake issues and called day before we were heading home. Ed and his team took me right away and had my car fixed and back to me in several hours. Highly recommend.

I based my visit on the shop off of the 5 star reviews. The staff was friendly and there is a $20 off coupon if you check in on Yelp. The staff gets 1 star and the coupon gets another star for a total of 2 stars. I was quoted what I thought was an extremely high price for my breaks to be replaced. I found another shop who quoted me 50% LESS that this places quote. I waited until I had the receipt as proof. While they seem great here and can get the job done you should know to shop around for a better price.
I have a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek, they were 1000x better than the Subaru Dealership on Jackson Rd. They were friendly, the service was good, and most importantly they seemed honest and trustworthy. I would come back here again.

Weve had two used cars since we moved to Ann Arbor four years ago, and HSA has always provided service that is both thorough but also fair. On multiple occasions, they have advised me that I did NOT need a certain repair, and they have always provided advice that is in my best interest. If youre in the A2 area, this should be the ONLY place you take your vehicle for service.
The people here are so nice! I just needed a quick fix for the air pressure in one of my tires and they had me in and out of there in less than 10 minutes! And at no expense! Very helpful for students and just the average busy schedule. Would highly recommend!

My car latch broke and I didnt have time to wait for the part to come in. They ordered me the part and temporarily bungeed my door so I could get home for spring break. Before replacing the part which would cost $$ they double checked the latch and it worked. Roy called me to ask whether I wanted to still replace the part or take it as it is and save myself money which is not common for auto repair shops Ive interacted with before. Although I didnt get the part fixed there I am SO THANKFUL for the integrity of the employees and their service which goes above and beyond!!!
Mike and the crew from Hoover just saved the day as we were trying to move. We were stalling out every block, and even though they were absolutely swamped, they managed to get us in and out in ten minutes. We are so grateful, and I wish we didnt have to move away from such a good shop.Also, Zingermans coffee! Classy bunch over there.
I thought I had a tire that had a slow leak, when I took it in they checked all my tires and not only repaired the one I thought needed it but also another one that had been leaking that I was completely unaware of. They were so helpful, and as a college student, the great location helped too! I will definitely go back if I need anything else done.

I can trust these guys, and there worth the drive through downtown Ann Arbor. On our past car fix, they went out of there way to make sure we were fairly treated, by discounting the one time price, twice, since we had to do two visits. I highly recommend them.

2022-08-01I hit a tire on the road while coming to Ann Arbor. I was hearing rattling sounds and used google maps to reach the nearest car repair shop which was hoover car repair. In a new town, I felt embarrassed at my mistake and worried about the seriousness of the damage. The staff of Hoover car repair shop was very kind and skilled. They not only quickly identified the issues and offered solutions, but also included a complementary repair for my car. They gave me further instructions in ordering the part I broke when I return home. I never wrote google review before. They care about their customers, and I really appreciate them, their service, and their kindness.

2022-03-30Hoover St is great! Tom was super helpful and made sure I had a loaner car for when our repairs were being done. Even after I had to reschedule twice because of my own scheduling conflicts.He kept me up-to-date and was super great with my six-year-old…. He didn’t seem bothered at all, and put on a movie for him.My fave thing is that the car is doing much better. They ran a full diagnostic on our first visit and put the diagnostic cost towards our service costs. The oil change was reasonably priced, everyone who works there seems very kind. We shopped around for our most recent service, control arm work, and while they can be pricier, they weren’t with this repair because they’re like the only shop locally that just replaces one part of the piece we had worked on instead of changing out the entire assembly. It was all done inside of one day.Their loaner car is a testament to their good work… it had over 270k miles on it and it drove beautifully.Definitely recommended this place! They do good work, they’re kind and they’re not selling stuff you don’t need.

2022-05-02I’ve been taking our vehicles to Hoover Street Auto for several years now, and have been so impressed with their work that I go out of my way to continue to take our vehicles there even though I don’t have to drive into Ann Arbor anymore for work. They are extremely thorough and do a quality job every time. Their mechanics are highly skilled, and they do charge higher for their labor than other shops out there, but it’s important to value quality work over racing to the lowest price possible. In order to maintain their skilled labor, they have to take care of their employees. They are a reputable small business, and have been invaluable for keeping our vehicles running.

2022-02-06I dont normally leave reviews, but Im shocked Hoover has such high ratings. I have been here on several occasions, most of which have been unsatisfactory. Each time they will attempt to charge you for repairs that you dont need and have incredibly high labor costs for simple repairs. It was over $200+ for a diagnostic on my vehicle, the estimate for the repairs was over $2,000. My father and I fixed the issues for less than $200 ourselves. I am a student, so I had to carve out some time to do these. They give out gift cards quite often for their services, but I would highly recommend that you decline all services/repairs they recommend that are not integral to the specific issue you came in to address. There is another repair shop in A2 called Broadway Auto (approx. 2 miles away) that has far superior services and rates. This shop is still within walking distance of campus and you will not have to pay an egregiously high diagnostic fee. Plus, the owner is very friendly! Avoid Hoover St Auto, but if you must go there, do not be afraid to say no to the additional services they push on you!

2022-06-02I had a great experience at Hoover Street Auto Repair. Everything was explained very clearly and there was a lot of transparency in the process. They were fast and communicative. My car is also running a lot better- I was not entirely sure what was wrong with the suspension but they found the problem and now I can feel a difference when driving.

2022-04-27The service at Hoover Street Auto is the best Ive experienced at a shop thus far. They got me in very quickly, and were very communicative. They did a full assessment of my vehicle and advised which items were critical. They were upfront about all fees and services every step of the way. My vehicle really gave them a hard time, but they kept at it. I really appreciate their thoroughness and integrity. On top of all that, the guys were easy to talk to. I had to get a lot of work done, and the price seemed fair to me given the parts, labor, and all the care they took to make sure my vehicle was safe to drive. I will definitely be back.

2022-04-28Great people to work with! My daughters car sat too long this winter, causing a cascade of issues that I had to deal with from another state. These guys were so helpful, great communication with pictures of damage, necessary repairs itemized and sent via link, discussion of repairs when necessary, and reasonable charges for the repairs. Easy for my daughter to walk from campus to retrieve her car when repairs were complete. So appreciated their help and glad to know that there is a great place for my daughter to take her car to for maintenance!
