Just finished dinner with takeouts from Hot Pot Chen. It’s so deliciously spicy! And this leftover would be my lunch and dinner tomorrow. We have had more takeout meals than dining in the restaurant before the pandemic. Time’s hard on them just like on everyone else. Great to see them so resilient in this trying time. Wishing them well.
The place was empty went we entered, we ordered a Peking roasted duck and a shrimp spicy hot pot with mixed vegetables.Wait time was a bit long especially since we are the only table, but understandable since Peking roast duck takes longer time to prepare.Flavor was good. Duck was crispy, the shrimp hot pot was good as well. Our food taste very authentic and close to what we can get in China. We definitely go back again.
Good Hot & Sour SoupTo me, hot & sour soup is to Chinese food what Pad Thai is to Thai food. It is my proverbial canary in a coal mine. Hot Pot Chen does a really good one. The broth is the dark variety and it is super tasty with plenty of nice veggies. The heat level is the same no matter what instructions you give, which is a little hot, but it wont flame you out if thats what youre into. One of my go-to dishes is the mu shu vegetables. Theres nothing super special about the veggies themselves -- lots of cabbage, but the hoisin sauce is excellent and the pancakes hold up well under the necessary folding process. I have also had several hot pot dishes and the broth is always comforting and tasty. Some of the chicken based ones can get a bit salty, but theres always plenty of veggies and meat or tofu in there.Middle Kingdom and Kai Garden used to be my #1 and #2 Chinese restaurants in Ann Arbor. Theyre gone now and Hot Pot Chen is my new #1.
Highly recommend. Came to MI from NJ visiting family and our first night we had Hot Pot Chen. Very nice lady up front, very clean restaurant. The first thing we realized was the smell of our food which smelled so good! Could actually taste the flavor, tasted fresh, not processed meat like most NJ places. The food was amazing!!! Got three different things and all was beyond words. Definitely going again.
I’ve been sitting here and waiting for my food for more than an hour. There’s still no food served to my table. I talked to the waiter and her attitude was terrible. She just simply told me there’s other guests waiting, while I’m certain I arrived and ordered before they were even in this restaurant. Terrible experience, will not come back again.
We are there last Saturday Night. Crazy busy, but the waitress did a awesome job serving us. Food was amazing!!! Spicy crab is my favorite! I dont think i can find anything close to it in MI. Fish hot pot is great too. You have a lot choice of side added into it. Definitely a perfect spot to recommend~
We’ve driven past Hot Pot Chen for years, always talking about stopping in but never quite getting there. I have to say it really is some of the better asian food we’ve discovered in Ann Arbor. Service was great, food excellent, and portions large enough for a second meal the next day. Parking is not very convenient since the more trendy Noodle & Company moved next door, but Hot Pot Chen is worth the effort!
Im really picky about my Chinese food and tend to be disappointed by the selection in Ann Arbor... But I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by my dinner from hot pot Chen tonight! The wonton soup was flavorful, the fried pork dumplings were savory with a nice gingery bite, and the hunan chicken was really good. Way better than I’ve had around here previously. Notably, the peppers, broccoli, snap peas, and mushrooms were all extremely fresh, the chicken was tender and not at all like the rubbery chicken I’ve had elsewhere, and the sauce was excellent - not greasy, not too salty. I will be back :) Also - I never review restaurants...This was unprecedented and hopefully it conveys my excitement!!
I visited yesterday for the first time. It was at 3:00, dead. The waitress was more interested in working with the manager than the only person in the restaurant (late on filling my water and visiting me while eating). The food was okay. Decent serving. A little overpriced. Most things were $12.95 and up. You did get some chips and orange sauce.
We were customers of Gourmet Garden. This restaurant is TERRIBLE. WE ordered the seafood soup and the sizzling rice seafood entree. There were few veggies and little sauce. Both had little flavor and had imitation crab not REAL CRAB. A good restaurant will tell their patrons if they use imitation crab and not the real thing. Our daughter is allergic to imitation crab which is made out of Pollack or any white fish of Alaska. Does this place want to risk a persons life. We are greatly disappointed with the new owners of this place on West Stadium in Ann Arbor. I called tonight and all they had to say was okay. We will not return and you shouldnt either. There are other places near us that we will definitely try.
Wow, Best in Ann Arbor for 2011 ?? I dont see it. We ate there last night and first-off you get nothing with their dinners. Egg rolls and soup are all extra. Plus you had to pay extra for fried rice and the included rice was either white and brown rice. (The one good thing was the egg roll; they looked home-made and were great!) We ordered sweet and sour chicken and also almond chicken. Both tasted as if they were in cooked old grease that had been used for days. The service was terrible too. I had to ask for knives 3 times. If this is the best Ann Arbor has to offer as far as Chinese food Im sad for the city.
It was my first visit. I reviewed their menu. It did not have bitter melon dish on it. I asked if they serve it and the owner said she serves it for her regular Chinese customers. Im Filipino and I love bitter melon. She asked me how I liked it prepared. I asked for sauteed with scrambled eggs as one dish and the other bitter melon recipe is sauteed with black bean sauce. Yum! both were cooked just right - the bitterness was hardly noticeable - delicious. I asked for water with no ice for my mom and water with lemon slice for me and the service was good. Im bringing my family for a meal on my next visit.
Same location as Gourmet Garden, but new name and new owners (same awning at the entrance though...). Food is excellent, reasonable prices, and fast service. Overall, this is probably one of the best Chinese places Ive found in Ann Arbor. Also, if youre a fan of scallops, the Sea-God Special is really good and has tons of giant scallops.
I have been dining regularly at Gourmet Garden since 1995. It is the best value in Chinese food in the Ann Arbor area. The food is uniformly good, the portions are large, and the prices are low. They do veggies particularly well -- always fresh and never overcooked. Lunch is a real bargain at $6 to $8.
Absolute junk. I ordered from this restaurant through door dash. Ordered beef with basil earthenpot. Menu did not specify spicy. What I received was beef with hot dried peppers. Called the restaurant. I thought they gave me the wrong item. Did not. They said it was the Chinese version of basil.
So sad to write this. This has been our go-to Chinese takeout restaurant for 15 years but the quality and service really have changed. Tonight we ordered 3 dishes. One dish was missing which we didnt realize until we got home. We called and there was no offer to deliver the missing dish. We wound up eating beans for dinner. As another writer noted, there always used to be crispy noodles in the bag and now these have disappeared. We also ordered steamed dumplings and these came without the sauce that was always included for dipping. I called again to speak with the owner, she apologized and offered us a free dinner another night - but no help for tonight. We will be searching for a new favorite.
The food was really good and we went for the lunch special. Pricing was great for the amount of food...Also, our waiter was extremely friendly. However, I give two stars because I found two piece of hair in my food. First one I found before I put it in my mouth (thankfully). I pushed it to the side with the food that had been touching it. The second piece? Well, I wasnt so fortunate...my tongue found the second piece of hair. I went to the bathroom to spit out the food as to not make a scene.I would have told the restaurant, but was with a group of people I didnt really know and due to social dynamics I didnt mention anything. Im writing this mainly for the restaurant so they are aware of this.Had this not happened I would have given 5 stars.
Food is horrible, Service is Horrible. When I first started going here 4 years ago, the food was decent. Now it is not. Any dish with chicken in it is over cooked and tough. They probably cook it once a day and serve it as requested. the last straw was when I ordered a dish with steak, description was New York Strip. I ordered carryout and when I got home. It was overcooked flank steak. Dont con me. I will never go here again !!!
One star because the rice was good! The egg and spring rolls were cold, and the chicken and beef were chewy. The waitress was extremely aggressive, barking at people to make their order. We were told no lunch specials even thou it was 1:30 and it clearly states lunch is from 11-3 everyday. Water glasses were dirty, and had things floating in them. When we told her, she seemed annoyed about it.Unless youre ordering rice, I suggest finding any of the other many restaurants around. Way over priced for your portions.
Everything was excellent here. Best Chinese food I have had in a long time, if ever. The tea was awesome, the complementary apatizer of the crispy chip things in sweet sauce was awesome.I had kung pow chicken, extra spicy. Also great. And the fortune cookies were served with a (really great tasting and juicy) sliced orange. I suggest eating the orange before the cookie.Im highly satisfied. This place was suggested to me from a friend.
This place is horrible. The service was bad. My food was cold, had hair in it, and had an obviously re-used carrot flower on the plate. It took us 3 times to order everyones drinks, they never gave us napkins, and every time was asked for something they walked away. Half of my family got food poisoning for days. I read the past health department inspections (public record online) and its awful! Food being left out overnight, not properly sanitizing dishes and equipment, employees not washing hands, smoking in the kitchen, meat and veggies being left out overnight, Ice machines dirty inside, the list goes on. I called the health department and complained about a case of food poisoning. 4 out of 8 people in our family got sick.
Not bad exactly, but disappointing. My family came here for my dads birthday lunch; when the food arrived, there was a hair in my own dish, and one in my dads (hes bald, so it definitely wasnt his). While the waitstaff were fairly attentive for a slow Saturday afternoon, they seemed lethargic, not eager to serve us (which I know from personal experience is a tough thing to do, but you can always at least put up a facade of attentiveness). The food was OK, but the aforementioned hairs took a lot out of my ability to enjoy it.
The lunch specials are very inexpensive, a full-size meal for about $7.95.Dinners have a wide variety of tasty combinations. My wife especiallly loves the Sesame Pork. We have scheduled New Years Eve dinner there on more than one occassion and they can comfortably seat about 12. More than that, I woud try a different venue. The service is always fast, the food is hot and fresh. Your choice of white or brown rice (no extra cost). Ive never had them make a mistake and I have been eating there for at least a decade regularly.I agree its not SanFrancisco Chinese cuisine, but nothing outside California is. For Michigan, its as good as it gets.
We used to love this place. went there for many years, weekly even. then suddenly our servers wouldnt serve us any more. the grumpy bossy lady at the register said its because you dont tip we were stunned. we have often tipped in cash because we want the waitstaff to get their money right away and we always felt a little suspicious about the management at this place. our standard tip is at least 25% and often more if we know or really like the server. this is our reputation everywhere. the waitstaff is not allowed to handle the money or the bill once it is paid. THE MANAGEMENT WAS STEALING THE TIPS FROM THE WAITSTAFF (we think it was the little tiny lady who takes up the bill folder after you pay). IT WAS YEARS WORTH OF MONEY!!!!! they are disgusting people who abuse their employees (many of whom are here likely in compromised situations and must work here in order to make it) we have never been back. and now we never tip in cash because we never want the poor servers to be ripped off again.
Not happy at all. Had to throw away everything. Only had a bite of each thing. Only thing edible was broccoli. Hard to mess that up. I would rather of burned the money. Been more satisfying. This is not good food. Just take my word for it. I know food and this is not up to any kind of standard. Just being honest.
Looks like its time to find a different Chinese take out. Ive been going to Gourmet Garden for over 15 years. Quality is going down, prices are going up.. but I refused to let that deter me. Tonight is the last straw...I have a 12 year old and a 15 year old and for as long as I have been ordering from there (the same thing every time) my kids cant wait for the crispy noodles and sweet sauce that accompanies EVERY order. Tonight I went in to pick up my usual.. chicken low-mein, Kungpao chicken, and crab rangoon.... checking my order before leaving.. there were no crispy noodles.. when I asked, the lady said they have NEVER given those out (you know the ones that are on the table if you DINE IN)... I said Ive been getting them for 15 years and my kids look forward to them. She said you only get them if you get soup. I said, it is fine if you changed your policy.. and she proceeded to argue with me saying Ive never gotten them and they dont give them out unless you order soup... which I find even more strange in that why would you want crispy noodles with a sweet dipping sauce just because you got soup? everyone gets them if you dine in.... what is this world coming to?
Googled Best Chinese Food Ann Arbor and GG came up. Tried the Almond Boneless Chicken as a carry out, and to my surprise, having read a bunch of this restaurants reviews, the posts referring to recooked/reused portions came to life as we tried our luck. This couldnt possibly be the Best Chinese Food in the city! But its true ... old dried out portions of chicken mixed with not quite as old. Unbelievable since I couldnt find what might appear to be some freshly prepared ABC in the mix. Very disappointing ... shame on you people at the GG Rest. for selling leftovers to me and anyone else with unlucky timing. How can you possibly think its ok to do this with which the speed bad news travels these days! These people are Out to Lunch! Well they most definitely arent eating whats being dished out.
Luch meal. Suspect chef must be Chinese. Food was well spiced. Flavors are very clear and rich. Soup broths for wonton and egg drop were excellent. All meals were hot and served with great care. Pan fried dumplings were served upsidedown! Showing great care and pride as it keeps the crispy bottoms from getting soggy. We will be back!
Horrible service. I have been here twice and both times the server has asked my wife what she wants and then walks away. Then when I order my food she argues about what I can order. Save your money and go somewhere where they get you what you want and that knows how to treat a customer.
The rudest people I have ever encountered. They snapped at you every time they came to the table. They walked away when you where trying to order. The food was cold and over cooked. Im not sure that the chicken was really chicken. I wont be back ! If the family was not super starving we would have walked out. As it turns out we should have. Had to go to subway to feed them as no one could eat the cat !!
I tried to make a reservation through the phone and asked for a quiet table after saying we have six people. She said I already made a reservation okay? That was the most rude attitude over the phone I did not know how to respond. Then she says bye... Im not sure if its her English problem or her attitude but being going there just because the big space, it is even more disappointing to hear how she responds over the phone.Update: my father called back to ask for a quiet table afterwards and asked her name. He told me she said we dont need to know her name....wow. I dont think we will go there today.
They reuse all of their food it happen to me and health department came to their place took garish from my little girl hand and the waiter told my little girl no you cant keep it we reuse them for other time so plz i advise u not to eat at that place and the owner of the place was standing when i was talking to the waiter. i feel that i have to tell people about this .very very very nasty
Gone down hill drastically!! Not anything of the experience it used to be, they don’t bring you the tea in a pot with little cups anymore, they don’t bring you the orange slices afterwards, they don’t have the pretty flowers on the plates, the chicken was poor quality and the bathrooms were dirty!☹️
Gourmet Garden was pretty good...this Hot Pot is horrible...my wife has a saying...”if it’s that dirty outside, why would you go inside”...I thought to give a try as the sign said “under construction”...wrong...nothing going on...a few people standing around who should be cleaning...dish had severely rotten broccoli...took it back for refund...

2022-02-15Pork dumplings were very good, chicken and broccoli as well- actually a good amount of vegetables with this dish- green pepper some cabbage, broccoli and shoots. Eggplant was well prepared-if a little sweet. Very well spiced (medium) and the vegetables actually tasted like vegetables, some restaurants they dont. This will likely be out go to spot for Chinese. Photo of chicken and garlic eggplant. Take out- didnt eat in the restaurant.

2021-10-09Could not have been more delicious!!! Scallion pancake, triple special earthen pot and Mongolian beef were all amazing and flavorful. The best part, for two people these were big enough to create a second meal. Please dont notice how I ungracefully ate more than half the scallion pancake before rembering to take pictures.

2022-07-13This was my first time here since the remodel. They did a very nice job with the decor. It looks a lot more polished and tidy. I had the Thai curry casserole earthen pot and found it to be quite tasty. The spice level was just right for me. It may be too hot for some, too mild for others. The portion was quite generous for the price. I had dinner and a lunch out of it. My companion had the veggie steamed dumplings and mentioned that they were quite delicious. The only reason I didnt give this establishment five stars is because my companion had ordered the wonton soup and it never came out. They were gracious enough to provide it for carry out, but it should have never been overlooked to start with.Overall, I highly enjoyed my visit and plan to go back.

2022-01-30All the food was great, except the House fried rice needs a little more flavor and moisture.

2022-04-19Really tasty food and excellent staff. We really cannot wait to try this restaurant again. They had a good variety of options and all the dishes that came out the tables around us also looked very tasty. Fantastic service as well!

2022-06-18Ive given this place so many chances but I wont be going back anymore. Most times Ive gone, the food has been somewhat disappointing but still fine. Tonight I spent a hefty $20 on crispy duck that was soggy and unseasoned, not at all what I was hoping for. This place is more expensive than other Chinese restaurants around but it really isnt worth the extra money :(

2022-05-11Decor could do with some updates, or maybe its part of the charm? Food is always good, large portions, fresh and reasonably priced. Service is fast and pleasant.

2019-03-26I had good service this evening at Hot Pot Chen on Stadium Boulevard in Ann Arbor. The waitress mixed our sesame noodles appetizer right at the table, for us. And at the end of the meal, she boxed up all of the leftover food without spilling a morsel. I appreciate that. In between we enjoyed good food and conversation in one of the most beautiful dining rooms outside of the downtown area. I love the pan-fried string beans, the sizzling teriyaki chicken, and the twice cooked pork. I’ll be back to try more.

2022-02-12Menu with A very large selection and the food was very good
