Comment: I did the half-day island wildlife cruise out of Oxnard. They are very safety conscious and I appreciate that. You can also call the morning of your cruise to get the status of the trip (it could change due to weather, etc.). Once the trip begins, they provide some history and some interesting info about the sights. There was plenty of wildlife: whales, birds, and LOTS of dolphins. Need sun protection and it gets breezy so be prepared. Very efficient operation. I would definitely take one of their cruises again.

Comment: Great experience going to Anacapa Island. The crew were great and informative, we even got to see humpback whales spouting and diving on the way to the island. I was worried that the reported 150+steps from the dock to the island top was going to be a difficult climb up a cliff but it was an easy trek up a regular metal winding stairway. We spent the cruise over and back on the top deck where it was breezy and a little chilly but we were dressed in layers and comfortable. I swear by Seaband anti -seasick wristbands, they work and you di6dnt get sleepy like when you take Dramamine or use scopolamine patches. Great experience, thanks Island Packers!

Comment: Not a great one. No Dolphins or whales. This is not the main reason I am rating them low, it is because crew was not putting any effort in finding wildlife around. Never saw any binoculars or any communication with other boats. We had 7-8 whale watching tours in last 3 years and this was one of our not so good experiences. We even came 15-20mins earlier than the scheduled time. It looked like the crew was in a hurry to go back. Earlier we had gone with Newport whale watching and long beach harbor cruise(much cheaper and great experience). We even had the same island packers tour from Ventura and that was way better than Oxnard. The crew was putting a lot of effort into finding wildlife.

Comment: Fantastic astic tripGreat staff, super.Boat is really good, has a small cafe on board and two restrooms.Plenty of space to move around while onboard - but bring plenty of layers as all outdoor sitting (expect for small cafe sitting area)I would udl really recommend the whale watching tour it a great chance to get up close to nature in a very peaceful area of California.

Comment: I had a terrible trip. Now, why give it 5 stars? Because the staff and crew are really lovely and helpful. We just had some really bad luck and I think the crew was tired. We went on the 3.5 hour Oxnard Winter Whale trip. Now, we know going in that theres never a guarantee of seeing whales, especially this early in the season. However, weve spoken to several people who have all seen at least one or two this season. We had an open weekend and decided to try. First, we took the afternoon cruise, and we ended up leaving late because the morning cruise took longer to get back in. Thats actually a good thing as Ill explain later. But what that meant was that the crew probably didnt get enough of a break between cruises because they turned it around pretty quickly. As we learned, they were late because they didnt see anything until the end of their trip when they came upon a pair of gray whales. Well, thats good! It means the crew wanted to give the passengers a good experience and was willing to take the time and make the effort. We didnt mind that, and were hoping wed get the same. We did, to a point..meaning they tried. They were communicating with other boats in the area and had an idea where the whales were, but we never saw them. We never saw anything. So, they gave up and started heading toward the islands in hopes of finding other wildlife. But at some point, they turned around and just went back to the harbor, giving up. I think everyone was tired and just... done for the day. You could just tell by the morale of the crew, and the captain confirmed it when he came on and apologized, saying he hoped wed enjoyed the boat ride. LOL. We were out there less than 3 hours, too, and a few of the passengers griped about that, coming in at 4:30 instead of 5, especially when the prior cruise went long. At the very end as we were coming in to the harbor, the captain saw a pod of dolphins in the distance, but we couldnt go that direction for some reason, and we kept going in to the harbor. A few of the passengers saw the dolphins, but didnt. We were on the other side of the boat and couldnt get over there.So... we saw nothing, except a bunch of seagulls, on a cruise that left late and got back early. That was bummer. But the crew did their best as far as I can tell, and they were all very nice. I just sensed they were exhausted and worn out.

Comment: The people here are very knowledgeable and passionate. We went in mid October. Check in at the port was easy. You can stand in line to save your place. Be prepared for a cold, bumpy and wet ride (if you’re outside). Also, I get sea sick, so bring the motion sickness pills: they don’t sell them on the boat! But they do provide vomit bags and snacks, beer, coffee, drinks. We signed up for the kayak tour on Santa Cruz Island. As soon as we got off the 90 minute ferry, it was well marked how to go to our tour. I loved the changing areas, clean bathrooms, cold water in jugs, and they give you all the supplies included: wet suit, crocs, thick wind breaker, life vest, life jacket, paddle, boat. The only bad thing that happened to me and my boyfriend is that the conditions were not the best but they okayed the tour. Halfway to the shore, our guide brought us to the side advised my b.f. not to go in these conditions (right before we started). It was probably a situation where they were debating if they could go or not. Just would have liked to know that in advance so we didn’t waste time getting in the gear and everything. But ultimately glad our guide advised us against it (my boyfriend being a newcomer to kayaking…these weren’t the conditions to learn). After a few hours when our group returned, we learned that the rest of the members in our group had a difficult time and were getting slapped against the sea cave wall and fell into the cold waters and had to paddle against the wind for the whole tour. Apparently, the most experienced guy in the group said these were the worst conditions for any kayak tour he has been on (and he’s done a lot in his life). He turned around. Also, found out that these kayaks are for lakes, not for white cap ocean conditions. Wish they used different kayaks for different conditions. They would probably be ok for smoother conditions. Instead of kayaking, we enjoyed 2 small hikes to the top. There’s bear proof bins to store your belongings and a ranch house at Scorpion Cove and a tiny info museum. You can get your stamp there. There’s national park staff to answer any questions. Felt comfortable with the bathroom, water jugs, storage and the staff. Bring a bag for your own garbage (no trash cans on the island) and a lunch. You can enjoy it at the top like we did and had amazing views! Saw the islands fox and those huge ravens.Want to come back to hike Anacapa or do a snorkel/kayak tour, but in the summer when the fog comes in and there’s smoother water. Our guide said the fog means the water will be calm. It’s the clear windy days that are a bit dangerous for kayaking. Be an experienced swimmer and a strong paddler if you go in these conditions. The guide is there for you but if you’re be like us, ask ahead if it’s advisable for newcomers to the sport and have a plan B for hiking instead if the kayak tour doesn’t go as planned. We got a full refund and they were really nice and quick with that.

Comment: Took the boat to Anacapa Island. Boat goes really slowly. About 1.5hours to cover only 13ish miles of crossing. But it was comfortable and not too crowded. Additionally, the staff was highly professional. We did stop both directions to see animals such as dolphins and a blue whale. Also, the boat hooked around to the backside of the island on the way back in order to see Arch rock and the sea lions on the shore.

Comment: We took the Prisoners Harbor & Painted Caves tour - what an amazing experience! They made sure to let us know what to expect and what to bring well ahead of time. The boarding process was smooth and quick considering our group was 100+ people with campers and gear. The tour took us out to the harbor, where the captain made sure to slow for any dolphin or other wild life spottings along the way. The painted cave was awesome! The colors are natural occurring reds (iron) greens (copper) and yellows (sulfur). To my surprise the boat went all the way into the cave and back! Then we took the scenic route along the island, which was beautiful. At prisoners harbor, we hiked pelican Bay trail about a 1/3 of the way to the scenic spot, and then went back for a swim in the Harbor. Overall, awesome experience. The crew was knowledgeable and helpful. One of our hikers got lost and needed to be rescued. The park ranger RAN the trail to find her based on satellite coordinates! Our ferry went to the nearest harbor and a crew member picked them up via lifeguard kayak and brought both the hiker and park ranger safely on board. They went the extra mile and took the extra time to help. Would definitely recommend!

Comment: Let’s just start out with WOW! So incredibly grateful and impressed with our crew. Captain Jason- was very knowledgeable about where we were and what was going on.Alex was the perfect crewman as my husband had already met him on his last tour. He also loves the birding and everything ocean. Alex also was very helpful and kind towards our 3 year old. Garyn was the third and he was incredibly nice, and helpful and easy to be around. He was knowledgeable and great with all ages. (You can tell he is great with customers and his communication is excellent) He is funny and witty, but also very knowledgeable as I tested him with lots of questions. We all had a wonderful time and we’re lucky enough to see bottled nose dolphins 🐬 as well as hump back whales breech the water. It was so perfect to add to our trip that I want to make sure other families have an exceptional time as well. I will definitely make this a return vacation for us and hopefully we will s e everyone soon again! Until then take care! Also- Thank You!

And tons of birds. The captain slowed down and turned the boat when we came up on porpoises so we could see more of them and for longer. The crew had a ton of great information and you could hear him clearly no matter where you were seated. The galley food and drinks were very affordable. Bring cash to tip the crew! It seemed like not many people tipped which was dissapointing. I am recommending this to everyone. I also was impressed with all the information they gave you when you purchase your ticket. Comment: When we picked up our tickets we were told which boat to board. We went down to the boat ramp and there was no yellow rope or anything indicating to not go to the boat. We stepped on board and sat down. Two crew members were very upset that we had boarded and scolded us on proper boat etiquette to never board without a crewman. I am not regularly around boats so had no idea. I apologized it seems to no avail. The passengers boarded literally 3-5 minutes after us. I again, went up to each of the crew members to explain sorry and I had no idea if I was not given direction or there was no rope along with if I am not regularly around boats how would I know? The man crew member them seemed to indicate it was the office girl who should have notified us vs taking any fault for not having some kind of sign/rope stopping. The woman, instead of understanding, again proceeded to scold. I get why after the first time they said it, why not just explain instead of being so angry? It made the entire trip very uncomfortable for me to be there and really put a damper on this experience. The similar trip I had whale watching leaving out of Ventura had a stop sign and a yellow rope so we had more direction on that one and it was a great experience. I was so uncomfortable on this boat that I didn’t even get up to walk around.

Comment: Fabulous way to see Channel Islands National Park. Various islands require different course trips. You cannot so them all in one day. Pack water and food for the whole day as there are no store or restaurants etc on islands. The trip out to the islands is great as well. Depending on time of year we saw different types of dolphins racing alongside our boat, birds nesting in coves on sides of the islands and more.

Comment: It was the day after a storm and the seas were high. The captain did very well. Not once did a wave come over the bow. He located a feeding frenzy and raced the pelicans, gulls, sea lions, and dolphins to the spot. In the center was humpback whale with hundreds of dolphins and sea lions feeding and the birds were picking off the fish that the mammals missed. Great show! When we arrived at the island the swells were to high to safely land us and hope to get us back onboard in the afternoon. We did unload the campers and their gear and left them there to return at a later date. On the way back to Oxnard we spotted a couple of gray whales and followed them for awhile. It really was a wonderful trip and through no fault of the crew we were unable to visit on Anacapa. My wife and I decided that at 45 minutes it was the longest rollercoaster ride we had ever had.

Comment: Took a really great day trip with these guys out to Anacapa Island. I really liked that the staff are warm, friendly, and go out of their way to make sure everybody has a good time rather than just shuttling you from point A to B. On the trip back and forth they keep a lookout for whales, dolphins, and other sea life and they will actually change course and slow the boat down so you can get to see them- and having 10-15 dolphins swimming and jumping alongside the boat it pretty incredible. Even though it wasnt advertised at all, one of their staff also gave a guided tour of the Island touching on the wildlife and the history- a very pleasant surprise that taught me a bunch of things I would have never known and made me appreciate the trip way more. Not sure how their other routes are, but Im excited to go explore another island with them soon!

Comment: The gateway to Channel Island by sea. To land on the island, you will need to board a boat in the morning and return in the evening. There seems to be a pattern of returning without making landfall, but it may be obvious after landing, so I dont actively recommend it. If you take the time to travel by sea, you might be lucky enough to see dolphins.

Comment: This ferry is operated directly by Channel Islands National Park. There are three locations in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Oxnard. The location is good, the website is well maintained, and the ships are operated with safety as the top priority. I used it in February, but because its winter, there arent many ferries and many of them are canceled on the same day. They call to let you know about flight cancellations and check in real time through an automatic response, but they also send you an email and even a phone call right away. The service is efficient and the staff are all friendly. But you need to make a reservation in advance for anything. The reason the rating was lowered is because of dissatisfaction with the tour. I had high expectations since only the Whale Watching Tour was available, but I didnt even see a whale. Its not a problem with the day our boat leaves, its a tour that is inherently difficult. Even if you see it, you can only briefly see its tail or feel that it is somewhere. The captain searches for the whale and does his best, but there is no guarantee that he will find it, and the advertising is too exaggerated. Except for a moment when I got close enough to see Anacapa Island and saw sea lions on the island from far away, I only saw the spray for 3 to 3.5 hours. The small boat moves fast and shakes a lot, so unless youre just riding for the fun of riding, it doesnt seem like a product youd expect to see on a tour. When returning to port, a picture of the bonfire is displayed on a screen mounted on the ships ceiling for disappointed guests. It means to warm up your heart and go, and I thought it was fun, but it once again confirms that the probability of seeing a whale is very low.Aside from the fact that the advertisement was exaggerated, you cant really be angry about why things are like this in the situation of the whale appearing. However, there are aspects of this tour product that they could have managed better that are worth considering. My complaint is that the national park volunteers on board are not professional and of no practical use. As soon as the boat departs, the Naturalist grandmother explains about the whales that we might see that day if we are lucky, but it was difficult to listen because she explained in such a noisy environment without a microphone, and I have no presentation skills. It is a kind of education and may be the only experience you can get from this tour, but I was a little angry at their laziness in approaching it in such an ineffective way. Another volunteer, an old man, kept holding on to someone and talking about his experiences the entire time, making too much noise. He didnt realize that he was a nuisance to the guests who were dozing off and suffering from motion sickness without being able to see the whales. Even though I asked him to lower his voice, he continued to talk for three hours, which made me angry because I felt like he couldnt find his role and was only satisfying the personal needs of a chatty old man. The captain went around looking for whales and kept explaining the situation, but they made it impossible to even listen to the broadcast. The ship itself is clean and well-maintained, the bathroom is usable, and the chairs on both the first and second floors are good, but its so cold that its better to take a chair in the cafe on the first floor. The cafe coffee is not expensive and its worth a cup of coffee when its cold, but theres nothing to eat except snacks, so those on the 1:30-5:00 tour must bring snacks.

Comment: Im sure that marine life sightings will vary greatly trip to trip, but I can say that the crew on our tour was professional, informative, and did a great job anticipating the whales movements and patterns.Aside from those things, OUR TOUR WAS AMAZING! We saw Humpbacks, Gray Whales, and many common dolphin. I highly recommend making some time to do this!

Comment: Good outfit providing service to Channel Islands National ParkIsland packers is not cheap, but they are competent. I feel like I was safe during the trip. The peoples main job is to get us there safely and back and they seem to do that well. There is some but not a lot of tour guide announcements and the boats are not comfortable. They are adequate transportation for the hour plus ride out to the islands. As of Oct. 2016, you can only get to Anapaca Island, Santa Rosa island and Santa Cruz island via their ferry service. You can only get to Santa Cruz if you can transfer to a small rubber raft because the dock is damaged from a storm. The ride to Anapaca is about one hour and depending on the time of day and the weather, you can be in fog for much of that trip. The cost is on the high side for such a trip.

Comment: My husband and I spent an incomparable 3 days camping on Santa Rosa Island, among the Channel Island off Ventura, CA. We traveled with Island Packers, concessionaire for the Channel Islands National Park. The captain and his crew and the Park Naturalist, Lisa Anderson, were totally dedicated to the passengers safety and enjoyment. On the way out, we paused to watch whales, to take close ups of pelicans and seals, and to drop off day trippers at various islands. The sea was choppy and the wind strong, but we had expected that since since all of us were warned when we made reservations and before we boarded. When we reached Santa Rosa, we unloaded into rubber dinghies at Water Canyon Beach. Getting down with all our gear was tricky, but the crew helped every step of the way. When we got to shore, we had to climb out and walk through the surf, but again, we had been warned and we were helped whenever we needed it. Once on land, we were on our own; still, it wasnt complicated to figure things out.The 1/4 mile hike from the beach to Water Canyon campground was the most difficult part. The climb from the water to the camp site was very steep and carrying all the gear was arduous for 60+-year-olds. Again, we knew what to expect and just made our way. Two young men very nicely helped with the heaviest item. The campground is gorgeous, with endless views of the hills and sea. And Lisa Anderson is an outstanding Naturalist and guide. She laid out the possibilities for our stay and scheduled hikes to the far side of the island as well as to the more accessible and warmer side. We hiked both routes and were amazed at the depth of Lisas knowledge and her kindness in making sure we got to see everything. What we were interested in was what formed her presentations. The hikes are on a tight schedule, and at times require sure-footed hikers, but they are not rigorous. Viewing the Pacific from the far side of Santa Rosa was the highlight of the stay.On a tight schedule, and through a rough sea, the Island Packers boat met us on the third day. Again, we had to walk through the surf, but the crew handled all of the gear and made sure we all arrived safely on board. On the way back, we had a wonderful adventure. We stopped to pick up a few passengers on Santa Cruz Island, and then we began an unforgettable tour. The captain knows every inch of the channel Islands and he had a hundred fascinating stories to tell. We had to be careful because of the waves, but we paused to enter Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island and to leisurely progress along the bays of the island. Then the captain announced that he had been informed by another boat that there was a dolphin feeding frenzy going on on the west side of the island. Hang on! We raced out to see the frenzy, then we roared along in the middle of hundreds upon hundreds of dolphins in the water and birds in the air. They leaped and swept and dove and screamed. and we slid along with them. As we turned toward Ventura, all of a sudden it was wintry. It was wet. It was wonderful.

Comment: I have been on two trips with Island Packers and I have experienced nothing like what the other reviewers had described. The staff was courteous and professional and they were willing to answer any questions we had on the trip about the island or marine life in general. Maybe I am not as fragile as the person who cracked 7 ribs but I certainly didnt see anything close to that on our trip. And just a note to those who get injured easily or who get motion sickness: BOAT TRIPS ARE NOT FOR YOU!
