Jays Sporting Goods in other cities:
Had a perfectly normal experience. Went here for a fishing pole while staying nearby at a lake. They had what we needed, we bought it, & left. Not a lot of diversity & we stood out 😅, but you know, thats not their fault. Didnt give the fifth star bc it wasnt exceptional.
I only go if I cant find what I need elsewhere i feel like the prices are just ridiculous but that doesnt stop people from going usually its jammed pack on weekends I suggest going on a weekday if possible they really do have all your outdoor/hunting/sporting gear just could lower prices a bit awesome store though friendly helpful staff lots of knowledge and experience
The best place for all your outdoor needs. I stop in every time I head north to my in-laws in Boyne. I purchased a Smith and Wesson J frame a bit ago. The staff at the gun counter and archery department are very knowledgeable and helpful. Gun prices are a smig higher than other gun shops, however, you cant beat the vast selection and educated staff.
Came here to purchase a suppressor, waited in line for a while, was told by the lady that she could show me them but knows nothing. Not their fault with staffing but they have a sign at the counter listing all their fees and it says if you order online you dont have to pay the fees of something around 160$ I think. Why do you have suppressors if you are directing people to order online? I ordered online but went through great guns in TC and they were very helpful and offered to order for me or I could order myself and I used the kiosk after setting up my account online.
Arrogant. Period. They treat you like buying a gun is such a hassle for them. Also the gun dept. help acts like they invented firearms - all knowing gods of physics. Stay away. Franks, mom and pop shops, actually want your money. I walked in with $2500 in hand, knew what gun i wanted. Easy sale right? Well I’ll spend my money where people actually seem appreciative of a sale.Edit follow up: I appreciate the response. My review was not intended to be a negative reflection of your entire store. In fact that same day my wife bought a couple hundred dollars worth of clothes. But your gun dept. is terrible. Not the products - the people. I’ve purchased 5 guns over the last 4 years. I went to Jays ever time 1st because it is closer to my home. Every time Ive been assisted by an arrogant associate who appears to have better things to do. So why do i go back? The products are good, you have what I need. I tell myself ‘no way every person in gun dept. is an Ahole’…then I find out otherwise. Selling guns is a huge hassle. Now if your a woman inquiring about a gun, you’ll have three salesmen huddle around her for 30 mins, even though shes not buying one, just asking if she were to buy one which is best. 3 salesmen who were previously too busy to help a paying customer. In 2019 I asked about ordering an Xbolt white gold .300wm and a Swarovski Z6. Big hassle, told me not to bother, could take over a year. Went to competitor, they ordered them. Got scope in a couple weeks and rifle in less than 3 months. This time I wanted a Benelli 12 gauge. Flexible on model. Salesman, very rude, says hes busy and will help me as soon as hes done. I didnt move my feet for 15 mins. While hes standing 3 feet away at computer. I stood there quietly patient. A woman walks up, asks about a pistol, not only did he drop everything he was supposedly doing but two other salesman jumped right into the 23 minute conversation with her as well. Could’ve been longer, i dont know. I went and found my wife. Paid for clothes then drove right to franks. Which was and is always such a pleasant experience. They actually ask THE CUSTOMER questions. And rave about what a great choice I made - which could all be BS. Who cares. They sold me what I wanted, not what they think I should be shooting.
This is the BIG,TOY STORE R US!!!!! This place STILL has GREAT service as it did when that store opened in the 80s..If theres anything you need for hunting, fishing, camping or ANYTHING outdoors, they have it or they will order it, Ive been going there since 1988, that place got me HOOKED ON BOW HUNTING, and the guy that sold me my bow, STILL works there.. With that, you go there and the SERVICE WILL BLOW YOU AWAY!!!
Ill admit, its been a long time since Ive visited Jays after a bad experience (measured in years). Decided to check them out again and Id give them 5 stars for this visit. More than one employee actively reached out to ask if we needed help or if we could not find some thing we were looking for. Kind of rare these days in retail actually. Ill revisit them next time Im in the area.
I am mind-blown at some of the negative comments written here. I have been in business my whole life and have a very high standard of service. This store is an example of great customer service and pricing. I have done thousands of dollars of business here and every experience I have is above average/great. I could not be more thankful for the services, selection, and prices offered. Keep up the great work (especially during these hard times) as the majority of us real sportsman/sportswoman appreciate what you offer!
Didn’t really have a good experience when I got my 1895 Marlin .45-70 Govt. back in the summer of 2019 with the staff. I will say this I am satisfied with the gun, I ended up getting a Buck with it using Hornady’s 325 grain. Also bought ammo at Jay’s! Thank you guys so much! Will ignore the fact you thought I was a kid purchasing a gun 😁
That was my first time inside Jays of Clare in probably 15 years. I wish I had more time to look around. It never ceases to amaze me how much they can fit into that small store. The selection is always great and the staff is more than helpful. If youve never been to Jays in Clare, I strongly recommend you give it a try. It doesnt matter whether you are into decorating, fly fishing, trapping or anything in between they have it
Outstanding service! I travel a lot for work.I can tell you the service here is unmatched. Not pushy but very willing to assist you.The selection of products in every range and color is also outstanding.Great job Jays management team.I will be making the drive back up there. Im actually going to pass many places to buy the products I want just to do business with this business.
Ive been here three times now and walked behind my cousin, who looks white. He got greeted by everyone through out the store and got helped at the knife counter. I didnt get greeted one time. ( Actually i did once on my way out by a cashier) I stood at the knife and gun area for about five minutes, literally everyone around me kept getting help while I just stood there... So I didnt buy anything. I really wanted a knife too but the workers at this place discriminate and made me feel akward so I left with nothing in my hands. I hate to leave a review like this but its the third time it happened. The store is awesome with lots of cool toys but they need to brief their staff and tell them to treat people equally. Ya never know whos ready to spend money. .
Jays was very busy when I went there. Staff was very knowledgeable, but like most places understaffed during covid. One item I purchased was defective and had to be returned. It was recommended by an employee, so that was disappointing. The checkout lines were very long and not enough registers. I would shop there again, but not just aisle shop, Ill do my research on what I need.
Went to Jays in Clare to purchase a new compound bow. Had everything I could ever need in stock. The correct bow in stock down to the color. The correct rest, sight, quiver case. I had picked out around $2000 dollars in merchandise and could not get one archery employee to give me the time of day. 2 hours later I get oh we cant help you, we close in 15 minutes. Great selection but the archery sales staff is horrible.
Havent shop there since father day of 94 ,wanted to buy a beretta model. 21 in 22lr, was up north working on my cabin, ( didnt have running water yet) call them they had it,and at a good price, told them Im on my way there, get there with permit in hand before (ccw). Employee looks at me (dirty from working) proceed to wait on wait on 4 people as I watch them walk up to counter, finally old boy come out of back tells emp.hes next, he said it twice to him for he was going to wait on the next walk up, bought the pistol that day ,still got it but looking back Id should just walked out than and there ,i can spend my money else were where they dont judge you on appearance only, they have lost 20 persons business for 28 years and going.....
I live in Alabama, and was in search of a particular broadhead for deer hunting. I called the manufacturer and they gave me Jay’s sporting goods number. I was able to call them, order my broadheads, and received them a day earlier than expected! Do not hesitate to do business with them. If they were nice to somebody that wasn’t even local, they will take care of anyone. Highly recommend!
LOVE!!! This place. They have it all. Camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, some nice home items, even some great, pre-bagged, bulk candy for snacks! Bring your walking shoes... this place really does cover it all. Clothing too!Another trip today! Found a really cool telescoping fishing rod for my go bag! 🎣
Love jays only had a gander mt. To go to they never had what I was looking for in stock. Either had to order or take the 45 min. Trip to cabelas and to be honest they werent much better. Now I live 160 mi. From jays so I always stopped on my way up from Detroit to kalkaska I really looked forward to the stop. Over the last few years I havent got to make this stop very disappointing for whatever reason jays changed there hrs. I mean come on your a sporting goods store most of your customers hunt or fish or just enjoy the outdoors. We get out early and do our thing sometimes we need things early in the morning that we might have lost, broke or just forgot to get us through our adventure. Now your just like all the rest of the big stores opening later and forcing customers to buy on line thanks for loosing touch with the outdoor enthusiasts. Now I buy direct from the co. Not the third-party like you, cabelas, sportsman warehouse. I support the little guy or the mom and pop stores. I might pay a couple dollars more here or there but I always get what I need no hassle. Just for example when was the last time you carried buckstop apple musk?? Bet you forgot about that great product from the past. I still use it buy right from buckstop in Stanton mi. Oh well I guess times are a changing....
Has everything you need and very knowledgeable, broke a limb on my bow & fixed it without any problems.went to Jays in Clare looking for a gun and holster got the worst service ever, Ive spent a lot of time and money over the years and dont know if Ill go back, thanks Ricky the guy behind the ammo counter maybe you should learn how to treat people.
Very disappointed. we were ready to buy a pistol and stood at the counter for 40-45 minutes waiting for someone to help us. while the sales people helped other customer who walked right up. at one point a customer told the sales person that we been standing there awhile before them. and the sales person just shook her head and continued to help that customer. we had other things we were going to buy as well but i guess they did not need our money. So we left the store without purchasing anything.
I called Jays looking for a part to my meat grinder/stuffer. They looked and one the size I needed wasnt available. I said thank you and hung up. About 5 minutes later I received a call from Jays and they found one. I really appreciate the fact that even after our call that they took the time to try to find it. Everyone at Jays was very friendly! I enjoy doing business with them! Thank you Jays!
Actually changing my review.. Had bad thoughts about the place. Had a mishap with my bow and building arrows. Kevin and the gentleman back in the bow department set me up and fixed all the issues I had. Purely changing my review based off the few guys in the archery department that really try and help. I appreciate it! Held true to my word of changing my review. 👊
I love the customer service I get here. Every time I visit the archery section Paul remembers my name and they have been more than helpful with the purchase of a new compound bow , they set it up and have made sure everything is correct and ready for hunting season . I have definitely been treated as a local which I am not since I grew up in KS , but it has the local feel and not commercial. They have really tried theyre hardest to keep up with all the demands during covid and still have many items in stock and are replenishing as soon as they become available also .
I love locally owned, regional sporting goods suppliers. All the brands and supplies you could need for hunting, fishing, camping, outdoors clothing, footware, and, best of all, knowledgeable, helpful, kind sales staff. Oh, and firearms, they have a great selection. Stop on your way North or back home. Not a big box store, a big store that fills your needs.
I Always make a trip to jays when im in town. They have an excellent selection of firearms, ammo (under normal circumstances),targets, black powder supplies, boats, smokers, you name it. The staff is always ready and willing to help. You wont be looking around for an employee like other large stores. A staple everytime im in northern Michigan!
We had a very specific question to ask about our ice fishing auger. There was an employee waiting for us with the part we needed in his hand. He said he saw us coming, and could tell what we needed. That was the best shopping experience Ive had with needing to find something.
Wow, I use to live in Mt Pleasant, just to be in jays a lot, live in Tennessee now and still like to come into the store. Always great place, but today after a rocky start to my birthday weekend we stopped in. The manger helping us was awesome, think his name was Paul. Got a awesome new bow, turned our trip around. Even got the triplets a drink. Thank you to the jays team
The employees staffing the checkouts need an attitude adjustment. When I put my purchase on the checkout counter, the guy turned away without a word to me and went to a phone at another checkout about 10 feet away. He kept his back to me as a I waited for more than 5 minutes. When I finally asked an employee at another checkout what was going on, he told me that I was suspected of switching price tags. After several more minutes, the guy working my checkout returned and rang up the sale, again without a word to me. No apology, no nothing. God help you if they make a mistake and mismark something. Theyre going to assume you switched the price tag. Thanks to Jays for responding to my review. Apology accepted. You have a great store and I will continue to shop there. Regards, Greg
I dont think the cloths available for woman are for anyone under the age of 60. As a petite woman there was nothing there for me. Sizes seemed to start at 4. If you are less then 130 lbs this is not good.Great shoe selectionGreat fishing, guns, and bow sections. Covid has the shelves a little emptier in the gun area but still a great place.
This place has struck an odd balance of standoffish customer service, and tense salespeople, although not intrusive. Overly.I stood at the gun counter for 10 minutes and was never even greeted or acknowledged, only to find out their pistol inventory is almost empty, at least in the higher calibers, .45, .380, 9mm. People must be getting nervous. Almost no ammo either.Hardly any masks, except employees(mostly) and a few other customers. Bad Air, in a pandemic!
I have happily shopped at Jays for many years finding their selection, quality, and customer service always excellent. However, this past July 4th, 2020 weekend changed my opinion. First, I was made to wait outside in the blistering sun and heat over mandated corona occupancy restrictions. This was not their fault, but some sort of shade/cooling shelter would be more welcoming. Second, only one employee was observed wearing a mask. This seems disrespectful to customers and unfair to the employees, some who appeared to be in a high risk age group. Does this store care about their staff or customers? Third, one of the advantages of shopping at Jays is the ability to shoot bows/crossbows before buying. When I asked to trial a crossbow, I was instructed to wait...and wait...and wait until the one employee working on the busy day satisfied the one customer he was with. I never did get to try the crossbow I intend to buy in the near future. This is not the service that I have grown to expect from this store. I love supporting my local brick and mortar companies, but overall, I am very disappointed and will not be back anytime soon to this one.
Jays is a staple for the outdoor Michigander. The store offers a range of goods for hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping, etc. Staff are knowledgeable and usually avid outdoorsmen as well to offer personal insight.*Note: While the staff at Jays all seem to take preventive measures during this pandemic, its customers not so much. Just my perspective, if that is a concern.
Great costumer service.. from Zach helping me over the phone from 100 miles away get the gun I wanted.. then get to Jays and the girls at gun counter were really busy but they held their own and showed positive attitude and willing to the extra miles. Believe her name was Ruth?..she was such a great multitasker and never lost peoples place in line..hats of Zach and Ruth..(I sure hope thats her name)!
I love this place! Ive bought ammo, guns, archery equipment, boots, and fishing gear. The layaway is awesome! Always seem to have what Im after, and I always seem to find something I just cant live without. My wife knows when we get off the highway in Clare, we are heading to Jays!
I dont write reviews often but I feel like it is really due this time. With the limited capacity in the gun section, we had to wait in line and be told when we could go back. The man who was standing there, Paul, could not have been kinder!! He was so great with my kids and with us and it was so refreshing to meet such a kind stranger. Then Vicki, who helped us with our purchase was very helpful and patient as I had no experience buying a weapon. Thank you both for such a great experience and for all your understanding as we tried to keep our kids occupied! God bless you both!!
They have an enormous selection of good quality merchandise and the entire staff was very welcoming and knowledgeable but if they didnt have an answer they found a staff member who could answer your question. Even though the store was extremely busy the staff were amazingly friendly and accommodating. This is the place I will be happy to spend my hard earned money.
Always enjoy going to Jays. An excellent selection of everything needed for hunting, camping, and basically everything outdoor. I was there today and spent quite a bit of time and money but as I was checking out the owner of Jays approached me and gave me a free hat and some other small gifts without my asking and without knowledge of the fact that he was the owner. He was super helpful when I had questions and helped me find everything I needed. Prices are a bit high but fair, which is to be expected. Dont hesitate to do business here!
I was so disgusted with the lack of virus protection and their lack of concern for other customers and fellow shoppers.Forty per cent of the customers were not wearing masks at all. I have never seen a store show such lack of concern. It was not a healthy situation during a pandemic.
More geared for impulse buyers heading north from the city. Nice place to be able to see or handle a product you might be interested in. If not in a hurry or need right then, buy elsewhere from a true proshop, where youll receive more one on one customer service and most likely a better price. Was quoted an archery product today 3x the price it actually is. They may have a few employees that actually know the department. The rest...warm bodies who are not by any means well versed in the products they sell.
Always a fun time at Jays. We have a small group of guys that go 1 day every other week. The people behind the counter are great. Of course theres always 1 rotten apple but the others out weight the bad. Costumer service is great and knowledge about, if they are not sure they find someone who is. Prices are so so, sometimes you find a great deal and other times you take a step back. Even with everything going on recently the employees were still super friendly and made sure everyone was getting help.
I’m from a major city and traveled quite a bit and have seen many type of stores. This store is something different, not in its products, which are hard to find if your don’t shop online, but in it customer support. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and plentiful. Fair prices, you might find a better deal online, but not the customer support.
Went on 10/24/2020 to the hand gun department, but unfortunately the sales rep was rude and didnt have time to speak with us. His attitude was business is booming, and was unwilling to answer any questions. I asked him a simple question, which he refused to answer, when I decided to leave, a different sales person, answered my question. Must be nice to be independently wealthy.
I like guns, bullets, and knives and they have them all. So if youve not crossed over to the cumunist leftist side and still believe in your 2nd amendment right to keep an bear arms you should go to Jays and buy a gun. Also get a shirt, fising pole, duck decoy, Filson wool coat, black rifle Coffee, Benchmade knife, waiders, recurve bow, muskrat trap, gun powder, flame thrower, beard oil, coyote pelt, hults bruks axe, and a gumball while your there.
Personally, I love this store! I think they are a little bit on the expensive side but they have an awesome selection and an enjoyable experience walking around the facility. Staff seems really knowledgeable and as always helped me with anything I needed. It is nice to be able to walk around and look at the animals with the kids as well
I put a Excalibur crossbow in layaway a few months ago. I went to get it out of layaway and they put it together for me when I got to the store . when I went back to the archery department counter after they put it together it was the wrong camo color then what I test shot and wanted. A sales person grabbed the wrong box and put the sales receipt on it and after talking to the manager and another sales person we finally got it straightened out. I want to send a big thank u to sales person Jessica and the manager Paul for going above and beyond to working with me and making another very happy consumer. I definitely will be back.

2022-06-23The entrance was full of large merchandise and this made it hard to navigate into the store. The store was great as usual. Clean, friendly, beautiful womens clothing and with plenty of staff to assist the customer.

2022-03-13I am very impressed by the associate Corey that helped my purchase my first firearm. I went in not knowing much and he was absolutely wonderful explaining everything. He helped me pick out the perfect hand gun for my first one and walked me through everything I needed to know. There was a mix up when I came to pick up the gun he had set aside for me, but regardless, I will only be recommending Jay’s sporting goods and Corey specifically to anyone I know interested in purchasing a fire arm. Thanks so much for all your help Corey!

2022-05-12Amazing outdoor store. Great selection of firearms, ammo, bows, fishing rods and reels, etc. Basically if its outdoors they have it. Great employees, very helpful and friendly. The mounts of semi exotic animals adds a nice touch. Nice camping section as well.

2022-03-14Purchased a firearm online. They were great. Had a follow up email to sort out the details of my FFL and a few days later it was in my hands. Great staff. They care about making the sell happen.

2020-08-23This is an absolutely enormous sporting goods store! Hunting, camping, fishing-guns, guns what appears to be annsmmo tower. Bows, accessories, kayaks, shoes boots. While they do have a huge selection of everything outdoor, they’re also the only big sporting good store in the area. That being said, I think their prices tend to be mostly in line with other sporting goods stores & slightly higher on some merchandise. The store is very clean, I was asked several times if I was finding things ok. Easy to find your way around. From the outside, it’s easy to see from the road. The parking spots seem to be a bit snug for full sized vehicles.

2022-06-17Not one to leave reviews but lately a lot of companies have been pretty terrible to work with. Called and ordered a fish finder/GPS that was out of stock everywhere else but they had one. The graph was shipped the same day I ordered and received it the next day. Pleasure working with Jays and will get more of my business in the future.

2022-03-06Not my choice to shop, the prices are too high. Nice products, just priced too rich for my blood. Most ammunition is not available. Gun counter is not very good to get help to see about purchasing a certain shotgun or pistol.
