I love the Michigan Theater, normally. Tonight we attended the late show to see Ron White. As we entered the theater the manager informed us we needed to show our vaccination card and ID. Great, we thought, if everyone’s vaccinated we can be mask free. But no. They still required masks! First of all I didn’t think they could require the vaccination cards. Second, why in hell require masks if everyone is vaccinated?!
Beautiful venue. Nice upkeep on this historical theater, and a fantastic place to see a performance. Keep in mind that the seating is an older design, so some of the more modern Americans of larger size may not be very comfortable in these seats.Excellent experience all around.
Bought tickets to see a comedy show. Showed up an hour in advance. Posted all over the doors are vax card needed to enter. This wasn’t made clear on the website. I think that would be in bold when I bought the tickets. Had to go and buy a rapid test down the street. Waited outside till it showed negative and still had to wear a mask. Then this place has no liquor license so they make you pay $5 for that before you wait in a 30 minute line for a drink just to tell you when you get to the front that it’s cash only $45 for 3 drinks. I was just reminded why I should just stay home anymore.
A beautiful and historic theater. Arrive early and listen to the organist play. One warning: if you are claustrophobic or dont like touching people you will hate these seats. They are very close together. If you get stuck in the middle of a row you will have to step on ten peoples feet before you even reach the aisle.
A beautifully restored 1920s era movie palace. The nonprofit foundation shows a nice selection of vintage and modern films. The theater hosts the Ann Arbor Film Festival and live concerts. I saw an awesome presentation of Metropolis complete with original soundtrack performed on the newly refurbished Barton organ.
The theater itself is very nice and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. The seating is kind of weird, hard to find your seats without an usher. Once seated you are so crammed in that getting up for a beverage or to use the bathroom is nearly impossible. Also you must pay money to become a member just to buy a drink, which seems pretty ridiculous.
The seats are small and the aisles are narrow so larger people may find the venue uncomfortable but aside from that the views are excellent almost anywhere. The balcony is sloped enough that people in front of you likely wont obstruct anyones view. Ive never sat on the main floor though. Plus the build is beautiful and the acoustics were fantastic.
Classic movie with huge restored auditorium and second screening room seating 500 with real projection movie camera, comfortable seats, reasonable prices showing first run movies and special art house productions. A treasure for any movie buff. Restored art deco glamour.
We popped in for this special treat and received a little tour and got to hear Andrew play anything goes on the Barton Organ. It was amazing!! He also taught us how it works together with silent films, we learned so much. The theater is beautiful and you should definitely come for a show!!
Beautiful theater and worth going for the experience. If seeing a movie in the main auditorium Id recommend sitting closer to the stage as the screen is smaller. The seats are typical theater seats so theyre a bit uncomfortable, if youre over 63 Id suggest an aisle seat or front row, as youre going to be very uncomfortable. Overall worth it though
Incredible! What an amazing space...saw Amos Lee here which was just spectacular! He was great! The venue was great! The staff was great! Parking is close and a walk around downtown after the show was great too. The sound was much better than I thought it might be as well for the age of the building.
Went to see Charlottes Web for a preschool field trip. The ushers were very well organized and got us to our seats with our school quickly. The organist was outstanding! The kids had fun dancing to his music until the show started. The play was great. The actors were very engaging and the kids really enjoyed the show. The theater is beautiful and well maintained. Very clean and brings you back to the old days - a great theater experience!
Best movie theater Ive ever attended a film which includes all of Pittsburgh, PA where I guess the first movie theater was erected in this Country, as well as some of the more famous theaters in Los Angeles and Chicago.I love the live organ accompaniment as well as the discussions of films and some of the concert venues. The staff almost always go out of their way to be complimentary on my shirts. A testament to their good taste ;).Wish to visit again once its possible. Even when I was having a lousy time at a Jarmusch premier it was still enjoyable exiting and talking with the VIPs who also couldnt stand Henry Rollins discuss Ron Asheton by speaking about Henry Rollins for 10 minutes and Ron about 10 seconds. But, I digress.
Such a charming and beautiful historic building. It’s very impressive how it’s been so well maintained and the seating is still very comfortable. We watched some movies during our weekend visit and it felt like going back in time for us. Not having an old fashioned venue like this around our home made it much more special. Glad my daughter will be going to school nearby so we can stop by again sometimes. Keep up the good work!
The Michigan Theater is a wonderful place and a historic gem in the heart of Ann Arbor. The architecture is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and they do a great mix of indie and mainstream movies and events. I love that they play It’s a Wonderful Life every December for free, and it’s a lot of fun to catch the organ music. This is my favorite theater hands down! My only con is that the seats are small and kind of uncomfortable, but that adds to the historic charm.
Its cute and very old school. They do a great job with the atmosphere. Heads up; if you want to buy a drink you have to also buy this theater club card or something. Its like 5$. No idea why, kinda annoying but it is what it is. Dont lose it because they keep no electronic record of it.
The theater itself is really quite beautiful. There isnt much leg room between rows so keep that in mind if youre tall. I dont know whether it had something to do with the venue itself, but the crowd at the show I saw here was by far the most disrespectful crowd Ive seen for any concert. People were entering and leaving the auditorium in droves throughout the show, forcing ushers to direct them to their seats with flashlights the entire time, creating quite a distraction from the show. Definitely a mixed bag for my visit, but its hard to really attribute that to the venue itself.
This theater is such an iconic part of the University of Michigan campus. My friends and I came here to see La La Land and we loved it. Before the movie started, there was a musician playing the organ in the front of the theater, which made it feel like we were back in the old days. This is a nice old-fashioned theater that has gorgeous decor and surprisingly comfortable seats. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here would highly recommend catching a movie here!
This theater is gorgeous and they show lots of special things that you cant see anywhere else. In the past year, I especially enjoyed seeing all the Oscar nominated documentary shorts for this year (one ticket and you see all the nominees!) and a filmed performance of the one woman stage show Fleabag. Note that they have a good selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks for a theater but you do have to have a Michigan Theater membership to buy alcohol.
It was fun how the guy played the piano before the movie started. Very unique and different. The building is beautiful and you feel quite classic being there. If I lived closer I would see shows there regularly. It reminds me of the Sun theater in GL, but with pizazz. Hopefully I can return again one day.
I liked the old style of this theater compared to a modern one. We listened to the Ann Arbor symphony orchestra perform Star Wars music, and it was quite good. Only quibble: one of the smaller posters, probably for some movie, had a very graphic picture of a gay sex scene, which is visible as youre walking into the theater. While younger eyes should definitely be shielded be from this, no one needs to see this while theyre just minding their own business.
I saw a rock concert here. I bought modest priced seats and still thought that I had a great view in this moderate size venue. The acoustics seemed good for my location on the main floor. I love the old style original interior. I am glad that it is still open. I am 6 and found the seats very comfortable with plenty of leg room for me. That is not always the case in older theaters. I would have given it 5 stars except there are some modest issues where the place is showing some wear and tear. No biggies.
Such an incredible venue! I love that so much work is going back into restoring this historical landmark. While you wont catch new movie openings, this place is a fountain of family fun and entertainment all year round. I especially love how they show Oscar nominated features during awards season. Also, if you ever have a chance to catch a concert her, do it!
Recently enjoyed the Will Kratts show and it was fabulous, the best Ive seen for children. We enjoyed it as much as the kids. If youre an animal lover, check their show out. You wont be sorry. This is a very nice theater! Has lots of style and personality. Comfortable seats and snack bar available during intermissions.
Great historical theater, with all of the old wonderful architecture youd expect. Seating is very comfortable and well-placed for the stage. The theater does look like it could use a little bit of repair as far as paint and plastering and upkeep. Really helpful friendly staff. No parking on site, but there is a large public parking structure one block away.
This is an amazingly beautiful and well kept historic venue. Walking in felt almost like stepping back in time. The staff is all amazing and polite, they genuinely seem to love this place and the community around it. They really set this place apart from other theaters, right down to the organ player as a before movie entertainment. This is a must visit place for tourist and michigander alike.
Beautiful atmosphere in historic theater. You wont find your typical blockbusters here (unless they feature an older one as part of a series), but you will find incredible gems, that big commercial theaters usually miss, be it small, independent productions, documentaries or foreign movies. I love it!
A beautiful landmark theater that was renovated back to its prime that takes you back in time. Though the seats are a bit snug, the rest of the theater makes up for it. The downtown location is a big pull for a evening out for dining and a movie. Keep you eye out for other performances that make their way to this iconic theater. Better yet, become a member and enjoy some perks.
Great place to see either a film, a concert or an event. Very few bad seats in the main room and they are clearly marked online so you know what you are getting when you book. Great little screening rooms in the back for smaller release films. A little piece of Ann Arbor history.
Amazing nonprofit theater! You would think this would be a super expensive place, but ticket prices for movies are quite reasonable. There are a number of great shows available with most seats being pretty solid choices. The screening room in the back is sufficient. Take some time to walk around and admire the architecture. This space is gorgeous.
We always enjoy the Michigan Theater, I recommend it highly. It is beautifully appointed, an art theater, does not screen the first-run pop movies that you can get at the googleplex. But with 3 screening rooms, there are plenty of choices, and most days they show recent art films. Lots of thematic events, plus the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, etc.
This is a gorgeous movie theater! The staff are very friendly and helpful and there are heaping portions of popcorn. Worth a bit of a drive if you arent nearby in Michigan. They have a really good selection of independent films. It also doesnt hurt on a hot day that they blast the AC. I Love the Michigan Theater!
This is a beautiful old theater. The seating is outdated compared to modern theaters and there are no cup holders, but this doesnt stop me from enjoying my time there. Its just a completely different experience from a modern movie theater, complete with showings of films that you wouldnt find elsewhere.
Old school theater with several different screening rooms. The main theater is only sometimes used, with the Annex and Screening room more commonly used for movies. The atmosphere is cozy, the antique aesthetic pleasing to the eye. Price wise, tickets are standard for the area, but this theater has a wider range of movies showing. The quality of the theater experience suffers however as the elevation of the seats is low, leaving you to either strain your neck upwards, or sit in the very back.
Beautiful historical theater. The main theater has hosted world class performances, including music, talks, drama and comedy. They have a live piano performance sometimes, before the beginning of a show. Something that you dont see a lot anymore. Its not the best place to watch a movie because the seats do not recline, and are nowhere near the comfort of luxury couches in other cinemas. But they are a very dedicated organization and play a well curated set of movies and shows that you rarely get to see anywhere else.
This is my first time to the Michigan Theater. We saw in Australian dinosaur tour. They actually came from Australia. They were so interactive with the crowd the way the theater was placed you could hear everything see everything. It was such a great experience the only complaint that I would have is that the concession stand is so small and its placed right when you walk in so its hard to get by if theres a long line at the concession stand regardless of the ropes they put so people wait in line for that move the concession stand or move the line and that would be the perfect place!! And prices were Fair
We visited the Michigan Theater to see Vulfpeck in concert. It was a great venue with good sound and excellent lighting. And the show was awesome. My only complaint is that the whole theater stood the entire show even though we had seats and the rows were very close together.
Very nice atmosphere! A little hard to see the stage over the heads of the people in front of you. The seats are not staggered, so you sit right behind the person in front and the floor is not sloped enough to see over their head if they are the same height as you.Popcorn was without the regular yellow coloring. Didnt try it myself, but I assumed it was popped without the regular theater seasoning. They did offer melted butter. If you like your popcorn naked, its for you. Also offered alcoholic drinks, wine and mixed drinks. Also didnt order these.
I go here every Thursday during the school year for the art schools lectures and I love this venue. It has a lot of seating but isnt too big. Some events are free, and tickets are usually around $9, I think. The concessions arent too expensive. And its located down town, where there are plenty of places to go to eat after the event you attend.
An amazing theatre showing a wide variety of movies, all of which are not the run of the mill blockbusters. Also hosts some live events in the magnificent main theater. Two historic movie house organs are in house, both sound wonderful and are worth a listen if you happen to be heading in to watch an evening show.
Only been to theater 1. Its a classic theater (not movie theater) seating (low, deep, and wide, looking up to a stage with a screen). Plays indies or smaller releases earlier or more often than other theaters. Screen and sound are fine but not emersive given the layout. Nice options to have given the movies it shows, wouldnt pick it over a more modern theater if both were showing the same film.
Its a good theater in downtown Ann Arbor. Theres a parking structure across the street. Ive seen comedians and play/shows here and theyve all been good and the venue worked well for each. If you want alcohol you have to but a year membership for about $10 first - it sucks to pay the extra but thats how they can get a liquor license so i guess you deal with it if you want to drink.
We went to see David Sedaris here on 18 April, 2018. My daughter and I love his writing. The Michigan Theater was a great place for his reading, as it is easy to locate (in Ann Arbor, MI) and plenty of structure parking available, many eateries located nearby (we dined in a sandwich shop right next door!)...The theater is clean, well-lit, very comfortable; the acoustics are excellent, the staff there are all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely go again!
Saw Jaws there. Not too bad but it was more expensive them I thought. Also not as classy as I heard it was. Nice Organ before the movie and introduction to this Movie series by a Rep. of the Theatre. I wont go outta my way to go (it was a 45 minute drive). Actually I have more fun at my normal theater. Not bad but not too special.
Very cozy venue! The service folks are always helpful and friendly. Alcohol is an interesting situation. You have to be a member of the organization to purchase alcohol, but you can sign up for a year on the spot. Totally worth the few dollars, and comes with a magazine subscription!
A wonderful, charming place to catch a movie. Takes you back in time. Seats are not so comfortable compared to modern movie theatres, but Ill take the experience over a modest sacrifice of comfort. Ticket prices are very competitive, as well. The preshow theatre organ performances are a fantastic touch!
Beautiful historic theater that plays modern and artsy non mainstream movies. Good quality projection and interesting features like the old organ that is played some of the time. Good for groups, and a unique experience. They have lots of events here. Its a backbone establishment on the street and in the city.
A WONDERFUL evening out with my wife, as we saw a GREAT movie, RBG! The movie was shown in an intimate theater(Annex?) and the seats were fine, sound at a comfortable level and not over air- conditioned. This theater is a classic place, near the campus and many fine restaurants and coffee shops. All in all, a fun vibe permeated the entire time and experience.
The theater itself is very nice and the few staff members that I talked to were very nice but on the day that I was there they were in way over there head they had a mess set up trying to sell beer and mixed drinks but u could only buy them if u are a member which they make u fill out paperwork for which slowed a all ready slow process down even longer. Then u had people cutting in line making it even longer my girlfriend went to get two drinks when we first got there missed the first act completely and a good portion of Ron white.
I am lucky enough to live within walking distance of the Michigan Theater and one of my favorite things to do (even in yesterdays sub-zero weather!) is to trek up there. Everyone is friendly and the popcorn is without compare (just try to eat the crap they feed you at Rave). Love this place!
Michigan Theatre is located in the heart of Downtown Ann Arbor. Everyone here are amazing individuals for sure. So many historic events have occurred in this particular theater for sure. Plus it’s opened all year round as well. Can’t wait to make another appearence as a visitor again soon as well. Keep up the great work!
This is a beautiful theater. What a treasure for Ann Arbor. I have been several times and each time I feel like Im being transported back a few years in time. On one occasion the air conditioning went out, but they were good to us and gave us vouchers for the next time we came back in. Every new A2 resident must check it out!
The Michigan Theater (and the State Theater) should be your first choice to watch a movie in Ann Arbor. The Michigan has a classic vibe and always has an interesting set of independent films and documentaries in addition to some blockbusters. They wont gouge you on snacks and drinks and its a nonprofit! Plus the Michigan is right downtown in the middle of lots of restaurants and bars. Hands down the best movie theater in town.
I bought tickets to a show here and even though Ticketmaster said they were the best seats available, they were far from the best seats. I called Michigan Theater (spoke to Amanda) and she was amazing to work with! She helped me get a full refund through Ticketmaster and got me the better seats that were still available. Great Customer Service!!!! Thank you!
Highly recommend! This theater was my first visit to an independent movie theater and it was great. Selection of films is wonderful (independent, some larger releases, foreign) and they have live performances (readings, I think some concerts) too. Lovely place to spend an evening!
This is a great looking theater and indeed its like stepping back in time when entering. We had seats on the balcony and my seat specifically was narrow and had little leg room (the seats next to me were way more comfortable, I found out after the show). The airconditioning (if available) was underperforming. Its a beautiful theater, but not one I would want to spend 3 hours in again.
This is a super cool, ornate, vintage space. The first time you go, you may want to sit on the second level, just to experience it, but after a few times, you will probably want to sit a bit closer to the screen/stage on the main level, which feels equally as cool. Be sure to show up a few minutes early too, there is usually an organ performance before the show starts.
Historic, beautiful theatre with its original organ from the silent film days -- still played to great acclaim! Outstanding programming, including several film festivals (Cinetopia, Sundance, et al.), independent, & international films. Also hosts lectures & live performances via the University Musical Society, Live Nation, & The Ark. I am proud to support as a member & volunteer! A gem (now together with the restored/revitalized Art Deco style State Theater a few steps away)!
A beautifully restored gem from the golden age of neighborhood movie theaters. There are really two theaters here: the historic Michigan Theater, and the screening room annex. The historic theater is beautiful but the screening room is just ordinary. You dont know which theater your film will be showing in until you buy your ticket. Neither theater is the stadium design, so seating will seem crowded compared to the cineplex. Still, definitely worth a visit.
Attended a few screenings at the Michigan Theater for the 2013 Cinetopia International Film Festival and am quite happy that I got a first-time membership! I look forward to their $7@midnight screenings and Sunday matinees of classics. The staff really love cinema and really love putting on shows for their viewers. The Michigan Theater has helped me to feel at home at Ann Arbor during my first week.
The crown jewel if 1920s movie theaters in southeast Michigan. Three screening rooms for n one building. The full experience is any movie shown in the main theater with a pre-show organ concert. Be sure to go up to the front before the movie starts and look at the whole room with your back to the screen. Gorgeous!
Beautifully preserved and restored theater from the golden age of cinema, complete with its own organ, Michigan Theater is as much a community hub as it is an independent movie house. It is home to the free Penny Stamps Lecture Series during the Fall and Winter Terms, and the famous Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Spring. In addition to quality adult movies nightly, it has also served as the site of the Community High commencement ceremony, and as venue for many smaller rock concerts and University Musical Society events. They also have the best movie popcorn in Ann Arbor, and a refreshment stand featuring bear and wine. The Michigan Theater is an Ann Arbor institution!
Beautiful theater! I just went there for the first time a few weeks ago to see Colossal and fell in love with the place! Reminiscent of the old school theater experience with reasonable prices. I have intentions of frequenting this establishment as much as possible in the future.
Great screenings of special feature films. Art house films, indie films, anime features, and documentaries. Beautiful theatre that also hosts live speakers and occasionally bands (The Decemberists & King Crimson, to name a cou0le). Great staff. Concessions including beer and liquor. Seats are a bit tight for taller guests.
Their Annex theater SUCKS! smaller than an average garage, its something they just threw together to get a third screen, has uncomfortable chairs, minimal incline for proper viewing angles, and they have the nerve to still charge full price for it. Very disappointing as compared to the normal main theater (which is wonderful!).

2022-05-17Beautiful venue. Very enjoyable experience. Lobby displays an installation of the history of the theater and Ann Arbor. Very interesting. Easy commute from the west side of the state, sans construction, otherwise just a few slowdowns. Plenty of inexpensive parking around the theater too.

2022-02-25Its a great place to visit all by itself. It is a wonderful place to view a movie. The decor inside has been carefully maintained. Its a pleasure to enter and walk around. The sound system is first rate. The screen is of high quality and the images from their cameras come sharp and true. The staff is professional, engaged and caring. If you are looking for a special event locale this is a great choice as well. Dont forget to try the popcorn!

2021-10-08Nice location for such a historical site. Place was clean and it was easy to find which part of the theater the movie was in.

2022-03-04This is such a unique place to catch a movie! Its a unique venue and the screening rooms are small enough for an up close experience. Im definitely going to visit again soon. A great place to check out if youre looking for something to do in Ann Arbor!

2022-06-07Great, intimate place to see a concert. I have not been there since the 80s. Theatre has a lot of natural beauty and character.

2022-04-25The theatre is gorgeous. Everyone was very nice. Concessions were just like a movie theatre though, which is not what I was expecting because we were there to see a play.

2022-04-11A very grand theater. My father, neighbors & I went to see the academy awards animated short film nominations festival. The same year the Sonys hair love won for best animated short which was good. I thought that Pixars kit bull should have won in my opinion. Some of The other short films from around the world such as memorable from France was very creative. From Ireland the whale & the bird was pretty with the water color paint.

2022-06-01As an Ann Arbor resident since 1967, Ive been going to the Michigan for decades for various movies and concerts. Its an amazing and classic theater.
