I recommend avoiding this restaurant anytime they have the rooftop open, unless you are sitting there. Service inside is horrible and the only excuse we heard all night was ‘it’s the first night the rooftop is open’.Pizza took 30 minutes and wasn’t hot when it arrived. The server had my CC for 10-15 minutes after I paid my bill, but was too busy with 5 other tables to bring it back to us.Overall a horrible experience at what is supposed to be a downtown Ann Arbor staple.
I feel bad leaving a negative review but my partner and I both got the worst food poisoning weve ever had after eating here. The intensity of this food poisoning cannot be understated. The food was good and weve been tempted to go back but cant risk getting sick again.Youll probably enjoy the food, I just had to let you know that you could get sick.
I have been coming here since 1995 and this was my wife and my go to for Italian and a date.... The list of what went wrong is too long for the review and Im going to connect with the staff, because it was a sad day for us to see one of our favorite places in Ann Arbor drop to the experience we had. Work hard to regain your excellence Palios! We just ate at their sister store, Gratzi, in Midland and it was excellent! For a main street ventures restaurant we were very disappointed.
The food was mediocre at best. The sauce was bland and had no apparent seasonings whatsoever. Our waiter was very cold and nonchalant. I noticed all the tables around us were being served complimentary bread with olive oil, my partner & I were never offered such hospitality. Overall, not worth the time and money, food was not enjoyable and the service was cold.
I loved the yellow and purple stained glass look behind the bar it was dope and looked so beautiful! Omg if I had that in my place swear it was so nice and classy. When I first got to the restaurant my friend and me and daughter had to sit at the bar because no tables were left because they were busy which is understandable. When we sat down we didnt get even knowledge for a good 15-20 mins and I had my daughter with me which kids should always come first especially when it comes to food or a drink. The service was terribly slow and the bartender was all over the place. My salad came out wrong and even told him I wanted only cheese, croutons and balsamic vinaigrette nothing else on it like twice. It was made wrong so I had to wait longer even for a side salad. Also my daughter didnt get a drink and we had to ask someone else for the food my daughter is 9 yrs and was hungry and they could of at least gave us bread when we first got there. I think of great customer service from a restaurant when you go there to eat the servers or wait staff should always put the children first no matter what they are important and hungry lol. Anyways, the food was delicious I had tortellini cheese with other alfredo sauce and my daughter got the homemade spaghetti which looked great also. I should of got something off on my meal like some kind to discount for the inconvenience but nope I didnt which is ridiculous not even $10.Overall the atmosphere of the restaurant was good vibes and cool for the most part. I love the flags on the ceiling and the people working there especially one women server with black long hair I asked for a favor was extremely kind & friendly. I will be back here again but next time I get want to come right right around 4pm when they open and make a reservation since they were full when I called to make one for last night which is cool. The food was amazing omg loved it!
Probably the WORST restaurant I have ever had food. Not sure why it even has 4.1 rating. I had ordered a vegetarian Alfredo pasta entrée but they had chicken. I did not realize until we went home and were about to eat. My other entrée was eggplant parmesan – which was not edible at all. Pasta was so over cooked that it had became so mushy like it was baby food. I had to throw it out. It also seemed like they had made my order way ahead possible 5+ hours earlier than my original pick up time as food was super cold and very dry and soggy. Breadstick were super hard as rock possible because they were cooked too early and left out. I ended up throwing everything. This was the biggest waste of my money. I have never had this horrible experience at any restaurant were all the food I had ordered was pretty much garbage. I called the restraint to let them know my food has meat as that was the first thing I noticed and called right away and all they could do is refund for one entrée. We did not have any food to eat, wasted money, took a trip to pick up the food to basically throw it all out and all manager could so is refund for one entrée. I would defiantly not go there again and would not recommend to anyone.
We were not happy with the service or food. The waiter asked what we wanted to eat but never took a drink order or give us time to add them to the food order. When the food came we didn’t even have silverware. I had to get up and get them. Food was not with the money. Very small potions for the cost. Never again.
Normally a favorite spot, but the last visit was a disappointment. Entrees brought to the table before salads were served, so had to send back. When the entrees returned, one was not what was ordered. In the past, servers boxed leftovers for you, this time we had to ask for boxes and they were just left on the table for us to take care of. Small things, but add up to a visit that was far less than some other past ones.
We ate at Palios on may 14th 2022, ridiculous service. We waited for our food for almost an hour and they gave us cold bread basket, and top of that my kids has been throwing up since last night, couldnt even keep liquids down. This is the last time were eating at Palios. Why did we even come here and spend so much money for what, getting sick!!!!!!!!! Also they never their phone.
We have been going to palios for years and our favorite has always been the Rigatoni Strascicati. What a disappointment with our most recent visit. The dish was extremely bland. Too much pasta and too little of other ingredients. There were no red pepper flakes, the few peas and tomatoes were anemic and, at the most, there was tablespoon of sausage. Not at all deserving of the $18.00 cost. Hopefully it was just an off night for the chef. Everything else was great.
Its a hit or miss for this Southern Italian restaurant, it seems.Like many, I have been to Palio and walked out with a full and happy stomach, and other times I have left like those unsatisfied. The Italian food is something to try if in the area, most of the time it has flavor with lingering effects that dance on your taste-buds, but some other times there is no impression to be found. Prices are high and that makes it hard to decide if you want to come back and get what youve been hearing about or to be let down for poor taste. The character is romantic: soft lighting, classic music, and deep colors. The oil and bread they serve is very delectable - but make sure to ask for more bread if need be, I have on occasions gotten a plate full of oil and two to three half slices of bread, only for it to be taken away without asking if my party wanted more. The wait staff here is always changing, like anyplace else, so its hard to say if you will get good service or not.So if you want to try some very nice Italian food, Palio is a place to seek... only if the timing is right.
One of the best Italian restaurants in downtown Ann Arbor. A little on the pricier side, but worth it - and still much more reasonable than similar restaurants on Main St. Solid service, very friendly and attentive server. I liked their basic red sauce; it tasted fresh and Im pretty sure it comes on most dishes. The carrot cake was a little too fluffy for me, but I appreciate that it had a good homemade taste.
Less than average food at best. Rustic Bolognese was not good. I ordered the Pizza Al Formaggio E Peperoni and added red peppers and red onion to the pizza, however instead they added banana peppers and white onion (? those toppings weren’t even on the menu). Also, didn’t taste like a three cheese blend, seemed like simply mozzarella cheese and there was definitely no basil in the tomato sauce. Nothing about this pizza fit the descriptions in the menu. This place was a very big disappointment and overall the food sucked.
I had a great dining experience on the rooftop. Nice weather. Alex was my server, she did a magnificent job. The food was delicious. I had the Asiago Al Forno, the Pizza Carne Amorne with the cauliflower crust and the Caesar Salad. I had a conversation with Danny the Dining Room Manager. Alex did a great job serving me. Thank you Alex! You did a great job today.
The food here is amazing and the staff are really nice. They will give you great recommendations if you just ask. Some of the portions for pasta, like the tortelloni, are on the smaller side but some, like the seafood variety one or the lasagna, are pretty big. The restaurant is also really pretty inside and they even give you half off a meal for two on your birthday on the date if you show them your id (not including drinks of course)! So it’s the perfect place for a birthday date.
Good Italian restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor for large groups. The waiter helped us with our wine selection and overall had excellent service. He made sure that one of my friends who has a nut allergy would not be affected by any of the food on the menu. The food itself was pretty standard for an Italian restaurant in terms of price and taste. The atmosphere allowed for a great sendoff dinner.
Wonderful Italian fare with limited dessert choices, but a great wine selection. We were a dinner party of 7, so we got seated in the annexe which gave us the privacy and noise-separation. Service was fantastic and the food was served hot. Starters are a must have and we had one of each on the menu followed by salad or soup accompanying the main courses. The tiramisu is different from day The Real Seafood Co next door in that it doesnt have liqueur, but still very nice. The carrot cake meanwhile would need its own box to carry out, being huge.Situated right beside a parking lot, it is convenient to drive to.
We had a great meal and service during our visit on a Saturday evening in later September. The espresso martini was amazing. We all had pasta and all dishes were nice (though portions were a little small IMO). Tiramasu dessert was excellent. Sitting on the rooftop was great. Would definitely return.
We went during restaurant week and had their Restaurant Week deal and it was delicious! The portions were smaller because they were only lunch portions for dinner, but they filled us up all the same and we had an appetizer and dessert included in the restaurant week deal! everything was delicious! We were particularly impressed by the olive oil for the bread- it was flavorful and delicious.
Holy Italian!! This gem is a hidden one. I went in here after a day not worth mentioning. I didnt want to do something like Olive Garden. So I can here. Brandon made me feel like a rockstar!! I ordered the Pollo Parmigiana. OMG!!! The food was definitely authentic and worth every penny. Come here for real Italian!!! Heres a picture you be the judge!!
Always have a great meal here (food is stellar except for their desserts which are OK but you can get way better elsewhere in town). Love that you can customize your own pasta dish or get preset menu items. Great rooftop seating as well as sidewalk cafe seating seasonally. Pizza is delish.
I used to be a frequent customer at Palio. Loved their pesto. The last time I ate there the table I sat at was completely swarmed by fruit flies and both the pesto sauce and the wine tasted completely watered down. I rarely complain about restaurant service, but the meal was inedible. That was a year ago. I thought it might be nice to give Palio a second chance, and assumed maybe during the pandemic they were able to address the problems with the fruit flies and the food. According to the other reviews, both of those things are still a problem. Really grosses me out to know the fruit fry problem still isnt resolved a year later. Nearly all of the good reviews are from people dining in the patio.
We recently had our rehearsal dinner on the rooftop at Palio, and it was a wonderful experience! We worked with Brittani, the general manager, to put together a menu and reserve the space. She was very communicative and easy to work with. We had plenty of space for our group, and even came in under budget. And of course, the food was delicious! All in all a terrific evening!
Great concept, sometimes mediocre execution. Good flavors, but the ingredients lack the quality youd expect. Pizza was really not good, especially sad considering the other great Italian places nearby that have delicious wood fires pizza. Pasta and lasagna are generally a good choice.
Very good Italian food with decent prices. The inside seating area is nice, but I definitely recommend the rooftop if weather permits.Food is very good, I tried some of their basic pasta dishes and they are all great. Would definitely recommend their Neapolitan pizzas, specially great for the price (around $13 for a large pizza).
Waitress was great, kitchen was very slow. They forgot to send the salad, pasta was dry and smushed, chicken burnt. Pizza was okay, soup was good. I was having good expectations about this place but end up being a waist of money. I should pay attention to the previous reviews.
A very good Italian cuisine. Perfect for a date if you ever thinking of it. They have good Wine options and the ambience is really good. ! The pasta I ordered wasnt well cooked but I would say it did taste good. I guess it just happened to be that day for me but I would definitely recommend this place for a good Italian dinner. I would recommend this place for a nice date evening as well.
Our group of 4 dined in an uncrowded evening. All 4 of our orders were messed up. The gluten-free salad & pasta had glutenous croutons, the cheese-free pizza had no sauce, the pasta pomodoro came without sauce, and the final pizza was so burnt that the crust bottom was completely black. Additionally, one water came with lettuce in it.
Parents - do not be tricked bringing your kids here for an expensive dinner. I would put Olive Garden ahead of this place and that’s the McDonald’s of Italian food. Service was good, the food was quite bad and super fake Italian style. The good reviews baffle me. 1 extra star because the patio upstairs is nice.
3.5 Id say. The sangrias were very nice which there were 3 options. My largest complaint is that the sauces for both our dishes had good flavor but were super runny. I prefer a thick sauce but service was nice and the drinks were excellent, not a bad place by any means
Great service from Jordan. Wonderful food in abundance. We had two more meals from leftovers. We are bread lovers and started with Garlic Cheese Bread. My daughter had Chicken Parm and I had a shrimp pasta dish. We finished with tiramisu. Will be back. Summing it all up. Yum!!!
Their sauces were good and the wait staff were pleasant. The pasta was slightly undercooked and we had to wait over 30+ minutes past our reservation time. Providing only 4 small overcooked shrimp while charging $5+ is obnoxious. Overall the experience was lack luster and not what we were expecting from previous reviews.
Service was awful. It looked like everyone around us was getting great service but our server/the bartender was beyond lazy and extremely rude. She appeared at our table once and the manager had to take our order, get refills and complimentary bread since she did none of these things in 25 minutes of us waiting. The food was good but she was so horrible it ruined our evening.
We think they are doing great under difficult conditions. A little pricey but our food was good. Ive seen other reviews which said the food was inconsistent. The servers are very friendly and attentive but do seem inexperienced. With pandemic we understand it might be tough to keep consistent staff. Love the Tiramisu. Wed definitely like to give it another try.
We were excited to try this place for dinner. Our meals and drinks were mediocre at best. Bland sauce and anemic chicken. They left the table next to us full of dirty dishes the entire time we dined. Large fruit flies gathered over the dirty table. Servers and staff were very nice, food and cleanliness need work.
Ambiance is very nice and the staff is friendly. The food was ok, nothing to rave about. It was also cold when it arrived to the table. As well, the time between the appetizer and the main course was a lot longer than it should have been (almost half an hour). If you come, I recommend sitting on the roof top.
0/5. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.Very bad customer service. We had to wait for 15 mins and not even a single person from the staff would ask for order and mind you the restaurant didnt have any wait. The restaurant staff dont have basic sense of hospitality.
Went in for our anniversary dinner, and we were delighted. The garlic bread melted in our mouths, the soups were delightful, and the sauce was a fantastic blend of flavors. Our dessert was fresh and delicious, but we were too stuffed to finish!Great experience all around, 10/10 would go again.
This has to be one thee worst guest service experiences I have ever had. We walked up to the bar and the bartender (a younger male) was beyond pretentious. He was clearly judging my partner and I based on our age or outfits because he ignored us for roughly 5 minutes before receiving a menu. As a person who has been in guest service for 15 years I have NEVER seen that type of blatant disregard for guests. Two managers were standing by and one was assisting him with drinks whilst the other just stood there gossiping. He then brings us waters and turns around and goes right back to his drinks. Didnt even take our order. He was clearly trying to wait us out but that ruined my opportunity to enjoy your establishment. After 10 more minutes I even spoke up and said we needed drinks. I understand he was busy but that was beyond unacceptable. I was completely ignored so thats when I got up to leave. I mentioned to him that if he wanted us to leave he shouldve said so. Will not be back and will NEVER reccomend.
Went there for a dinner date and was disappointed the whole way through. Server failed to really explain much of the menu to us despite us saying we were new and he was relatively inattentive. We got the cheese bread as an appetizer which was good. Our entrees were extremely sub par. I got the shrimp scampi and she got the tortellini cheese pasta. Both were fine and edible for sure but I was expecting so much more given the price range. Paid $50 for a meal I felt was worth closer to $25-30 and left feeling disappointed. The atmosphere in the place is great and the patio seating is cool. I like how the kitchen line is the first thing you see when you walk in, makes the place feel different. Just wish the food quality matched the price point. Next time I think we will just stick to Olive Garden though.
Used to be much better. Palio used to be one of my all time favorite restaurants in the area! Its been a few years since Ive been here. I dont know what has happened but I have to agree with some of the other reviews. We had reservations at 4:00, which is exactly when they open on Sundays. They got us seated a few minutes early, even better. The waitress was very nice and polite. However it took forever to get the food even tho there were not many customers present. We werent very impressed with any of the food, from the bruschetta to our pasta dishes. My grilled chicken with angel hair pasta was okay. Just average. There seemed to be a lot of flavor lacking. For the price of these dishes, we were hoping for much more. Thankfully we had a birthday today so it made the meal half off. I would have been rather upset to have spent that much money full price. Will probably be a few years before we go back. I hate to say it, but my trip to the old standard Olive Garden a few weeks ago had much more flavor and warm bread for much less money.
We ate here tonight and were inundated by fruit flys! We were constantly battling them away during our dinner. When I brought to the attention to the manager, he said “ yes we know it’s a problem. We are sorry about that. That was it. Sorry not sorry. Would not eat here again!
We went in last Sunday for the first night of Ann Arbor Restaurant Week. Making a reservation was easy and we were seated right away. We were in a bit of an awkward spot (over by the bar where they stack all the glasses & small plates), so there were always a couple people right next to our table. On the other hand it meant if our waiter, Karl, was behind the bar it was easy for him to do a quick check on if we needed refills, plates cleared, next course, etc. without needing to come right up to the table. He was very attentive and the service was very quick! The food was great & coming during Restaurant Week meant we got to try an appetizer, entree, and dessert for a great price (although the regular prices seem on par with most other casual Italian dining spots). The portions were also a good size, even after we were told they were a little smaller for the RW menu. We will definitely come back!
Honestly I’d love to cut some slack during the pandemic, but $15 for overcooked rigatoni with crushed tomatoes and absolutely no basil, salt, pepper, olive oil, or any seasoning to be found is outrageous for the basil pomodoro pasta. My parents’ food was still quite flavorless, but significantly better than mine. Very disappointed, but the one upside was that the staff on the phone was very nice!
Always a nice, quality experience when visiting here. This time though, was the best visit Ive had. Our server Sam was so knowledgeable on the menu that she answered any questions my vegan parents had about ordering and also recommended certain modifications to make their entrees fit my parents diet! Love the food, love the atmosphere, and was blown away by the service.
Delicious! If you have the chance to eat at Palio do it. Theres a wonderful menu starting with the bread and olive oil, yum. The menu is great and theres a variety of choices. The atmosphere is very nice, actually in the evening its quite romantic, a nice date place for sure. I dont know anything about Italian regional foods but I do know good ciao, lol. Enjoy!
We called Saturday to place an order and we were told that it was impossible at the moment because they were too busy to take our order. They said that if we wanted to place the order it needed to be online or we could not get it. I think this is not a proper customer service to begin with! We tried to place the order online but we needed to sign up with FB, Google, or create an account in order to pay... way too much trouble to eat pasta!
This restaurant has been one of my favorite in town for a couple decades. The cavatappi con pollo is incredible if you like pesto.Their salmon entree is one of the best salmon preps Ive ever had. I often order a side of linguine pesto with that. For dessert, Im all about the espresso cake.. its like a delicious brownie with chocolate mousse on top and some raspberry coulis. 😋
Best chicken marsala I have ever had! Great wine and the service is excellent. They can help you pair wine with your meal if your unsure. They wont steer you wrong or more expensive they will truly recommend the wine that goes best with your meal and enhances the flavor!
It is a quaint venue for sure on the rooftop and we got some endless bottomless sangria that was delicious. The server could have been a little more friendly, but maybe she was really busy. The bartender was great. I think the bar could use a little work. It didnt seem too stable.
Took my daughter there for her birthday dinner. Awful experience. One of our party had the wrong meal delivered -- not once, but twice. One of those deals where by the time her correct meal was delivered, everyone else was done with their dinner. My meal was not what I ordered, but whatever -- just wasnt very good. But the worst part -- seated at the table in the corner at the far back of the restaurant -- we were just swarmed with little fruit flies. Landed on our food, in our drinks, swarmed around our faces, around the light.Absolutely disgusting experience.Spoke to the manager -- got a blank look from her -- she said were treating it. Would have been nice if they treated it before we had dinner there. Asked me if she could give me a gift card -- declined -- told her I wouldnt have any way to use it because I wont be coming back to the restaurant ever again.Disgusting.
Im no expert in Italian cuisine, but it was sum gud fud that I had with my friends. Josh the server was very nice and gave much bread. He also liked my napkin origami Fred the Red Crane. Overall satisfied with experience. Peeps sitting next to us were very loud tho... very rude of them imo. Also rooftop seating wouldve been ideal, but I guess sum birds reserved the place to chirp on.
I went to celebrate my birthday with the family. We were not impressed with their service and the seafood pasta this time. The mussels and scallops were not fully cook and they made it again but still under cooked. My family tasted the mussels as well and they agreed that the mussles werent fully cooked. One of the managers(?) came by and said the chef said they should be fully cooked disregarding what we said. Very much disappointed. Its one of my wifes favorite restaurants in town...
Although we like this place before, this visit was different. The waiter seemed to try to hurry us out : served the desserts while we were eating the main course and presented us a bill while we were having our desserts. It was the last day of Ann Arbor Restaurant Week.
This wasn’t their best moment. My husband and I were seated upstairs for our anniversary. After about 12 minutes we got water from “T”. A few minutes later we got his attention and asked who our waiter was, he was as confused as we were. It was obvious the bus boys were talking about who our waiter was. A nice waitress “H” took our order but said we weren’t her table, she had the adjoining section. Our salads came. Then our food. That rasp thing for the parmesan cheese it ridiculously small. I asked for a new fork, mine had dried food on the handle. She never returned. Eventually when we realized she would never return my husband grabbed a roll of silverware from the hostess stand. We continued getting water but we were never asked how our meal was. I think we were in “A”s section because he cleared our salad plates and he had the other tables on the east side. We had finished our meal for a while and never had anyone come over. We decided to figure out how much we owed and left a tiny tip. When we got up to leave “A” finally came over, scooped up the cash and asked if we wanted a box. Deciding to never relive this experience we declined and just left. That was possibly the worst night out we have ever had. No one apologized for ignoring our existence. We felt like impositions. I hadn’t been there in years and I doubt a return. I can’t believe we dropped $50 to be ignored. If the manager wants to know the names, feel free to ask.
Outdoor seating is nice. However, tables and chairs are wobbly so it was easy to knock stuff over. The food was mediocre. Both my and my daughters dish came out warm, not hot. I had the eggplant parmigiana and they prepared it like cutting the plant in half and breading it. The inside of the slab was cold. Wait staff was slow probably because they go/up down a full story to get the food for guests on the rooftop seating.
Good quality family style Italian food the extras like the olive oil and Zingermans bread really make the meal. The arrabiata sauce was too creamy for me not angry enough it plateaued ad a little annoying. They need to turn up the heat. All the staff we interacted with were great provided high quality service.
We went for dessert on a busy Friday night, about 9pm. Despite being busy, we were seated without a wait. Our server was nice, but after taking our order, she left us for a long time, then had to come back and ask what we ordered again. The food was good, but I dont feel inspired to return soon.
I have no idea what happened to this place but our dinner was seriously terrible. I got Alfredo and the pasta wasn’t cooked right, the sauce wasn’t good and there was hardly any, and the shrimp were so tough and burnt I didn’t even eat them. The portion sizes were also TINY. We wasted $60, don’t make the same mistake we did!
Just ok- Ive realized this group of restaurants owned by the same folks is just not for me. Ive never been impressed with the Italian food in AA either. I think the service is good and the staff is friendly. I just dont like their food. You will not be disappointed nor impressed.
The wait staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately they had to do a lot of apologizing on behalf of the kitchen and the bartender due to the fact that my chicken was undercooked and the Tom Collins had absolutely no gin in it (which they corrected). Those were the most egregious instances of the evening, but to expand on it the salads had almost no dressing and my dining companions were underwhelmed by their entrees and, surprisingly, had to add salt and pepper to make it palatable. The bathrooms are also in serious need of bleach or a power wash. My boots stuck to the floor and there was a heavy smell of stale urine.Id been here in the past and had a fabulous experience so Im really sad to see the degradation in quality.
I dont know whats happened but there was just a lack of flavor to their food. We had the meat and cheese plate which was great, but our salads and entrees had a severe lack of flavor. One member of our party received a mixed drink that seemed to have no alcohol (to be fair this was corrected). Wait staff was friendly, polite, and professional and attempted to fix the issues we had but overall this was not a good dining experience. As a side note there were also a large amount of fruit flies flying around our food and drinks (in December)
My family and I were celebrating a birthday. The table they sat us at was in the middle of the isle , one side of the table was to close to the walkway and the other side was to close to the booths , so my family was constantly getting bumped all dinner long. The service was poor, our waitress was not attentive and our food took an unreasonable amount of time to come out. When our food was served, you could tell it was sitting out for a while. Portions were small as well as you could see the bottom of the plate.Overall very disappointing experience, I don’t think we will be back.I cannot recommend Palio’s any longer.
I was very disappointed in the service we received from Palio this weekend. This was suppose to be our nice dinner we went to for my bacherlortte party. My Maid of Honor called a week ahead to reserve a table for 11. We arrive and our seated in a room that was not requested. We start to order and we cannot order what we want because the oven isnt working. So we order salads and 1 dish of pasta. We waited for an hour and a half. No one had said anything to us that Palio was short staffed and half their kitchen was not working until we had to ask how long does it take to make any of this food we ordered. They couldnt give us an aprox. time on food and when it would be done we were told that there was a large stack of orders. We then ordered espresso which came cold. If you cannot accommodate for the upper deck the main restaurant and outside patio to be open then you should only have one section running if you are short staffed and kitchen is not running. I have been a long time resident of the area and I will not be going back to eat here with the service we received.
Palio seems to be hit or miss when I visit. The drinks are great, particularly the sangria. The food has been a disappointment lately. The last time I went my pizza was cold when it came out so it was a let down but I have also had nice food experiences there as well. It is a nice place to sit on the rooftop and have a drink before dinner on Main street.
We called 5 times on Wednesday February 24 to place a to go order. Each time no one answered the phone and the calls terminated automatically with no one answering the phone. At least Pacific Rim answered the call even though they were fully booked. Palio showed extreme disdain for this regular customer. It will be a long time before we try to patronize them again. I would place a zero star if given the choice.
I am baffled at the low-ish score for this restaurant. Everything about our dining experience was exemplary. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, with a rustic Italian cucina feel, yet with ample seating for big groups. The wait staff was prompt and intuitive—-refilling drinks before you asked, offering up helpful tips and recommendations (not just “it tastes fine...”), and serving us quickly and checking on us frequently. Did I mention that the menus are even on iPads so you can see what the dish looks like ahead of time? Its a cool feature. But the star of the experience is the food. Born and raised in the NY metro area and italian by birth, I’ve often been severely dissapointed by Michigan’s italian offerings. Palio is legit: the sauce doesnt taste like sugar, it has depth of flavor you only get from good tomatoes, the cheese isnt sawdust (its fresh SHAVED parmigiana!), and the pizza crust is thin, yet chewy and crisp simultaenously!Ignore the ratings—-this is the highest caliber/quality Italian food in the area. I am floored and finally thrilled to have a decent Italian place on my list.
Quite stingy with portions. Theyll give you lots of pasta but very very little meat. Beer glasses are extremely narrow as well. Probably because of their whole birthday offer thing theyre being stingy across the board. Was extremely disappointed. (They have been good before, dont know what changed and caused them to being really bad). Ambience is amazing.
Love their salads! This is the first place that introduced me to different types of lettuce and toppings I never would have thought would go together, mind you, this was years ago, but it changed my whole way of making salads at my dinner table. They have great food and ambiance.
In the summertime, the Palio rooftop is prime seating! Our waitress was super attentive and refilled our delicious bread and oil numerous times.I had the Caesar salad added to my meal of tortellini with pesto sauce and it was SO GOOD! I absolutely was blown away by how much I liked it and would definitely come back again.
Overall dinner is a 4.5. Would have been a solid 5 except that the bread, while fresh from Zingermans, was served cool and the wine served in a juice glass. While that may the Italian way, I prefer my wine in a wine glass. BTW, the Charles Woodson red blend was excellent.
When we made our reservation at Palios, I told them we were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary. That information was not passed on to our server. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and were seated in a small booth - that would have been okay except that our entrees were served just after our salads arrived. That meant we were very cramped. Our waiter couldnt answer any questions about items on the menu. He also tried to charge us the entree price of a salad rather than the reduced price you receive when order it with another entree because he wasnt aware there was a price difference. We like Palios food - we didnt like the tiny booth when combined with an untrained server. It was not the dining experience we had hoped for for our Anniversary.
Was a favorite place to eat. This trip on Nov 4( my wifes birthday),the food was subpar, bland and flavorless. The muscles in my dish tasted and smelled like the bottom of the fish tank. My wifes grilled chicken on her pasta tasted bland with no seasoning. The only good thing we had was the tiramisu. Very disappointed. Glad I didnt pay full price.
Honestly their food is like something you can make at home. It’s way overpriced. I’ve been several times and had 3 different dishes and they were all not very good. The service is decent but you may as well stay home. Seafood is sub par. Drinks are way overpriced for what you actually get. You’ll find better elsewhere.
Amazing location and rooftop. Everything else is average, especially for the price. Suspect complacency is at play as many students/visitors pass through and dont have to rely on repeat customers. A lot of potential to be a 5 start location downtown once things reopen
Never fails to dissapoint. They have a wonderful outdoor patio. Thats where the praise ends. The service is ok to slow. The food has always disappointed, most recently with some bruschetta which we ordered and was basically impossible to eat based on the size and toughness of meat put on top of it. We ended up deconstructing the bruschetta entirely and eating it piecemeal. Their sangria isnt really sangria as they add Sprite (?!) To the sangria making it quite sweet. The restaurant smelled horrible when we walked in but maybe it was just the day.We have tried this restaurant three times and felt similarly each time.
Good food. I had eaten up stairs on the patio outside, I think the patio menu offers less of a selection but still the food was good. Ive been a few times, nothing was exceptional. I was a little disappointed when sitting indoors as they seem to jam as many tables together as they could, they placed us right next to the wait staff area and we asked to move. We watched 3 other groups do the same exact thing right after we moved.
Our dinner took 3 hours. We waited 30 minutes for drinks. We waited an hour just for appetizers to come out. Another 30 minutes after that for our salads. We finally got our entrees at 10:30. We ordered at 8:15. When they came out one of our group got the wrong thing. This was after our server had read back to us what we all ordered, and had recommended that dish specifically. When the right thing came out the chicken was totally unseasoned. Another in our group had plain noodles come out with a few shrimp. When we complained the manager said “would you like me to take care of the appetizers and drinks”. We shouldn’t have had to ask in the first place. They were unorganized, the food was awful, and no initiative was taken to make anything right. I will never be back. If I could give 0 stars I would.Mainstreet Ventures needs to pay more attention to food quality and service. The quality is laughable and I’m appalled that we paid over $60 per couple for a meal we barely ate because it was so terrible. And that’s AFTER they removed our appetizers and a drink. I literally cannot express enough how ridiculous our experience was. It was the worst food I’ve ever had at a restaurant.
Stopped in and ate at Palio and was a little disappointed. The food was really good, but the waiters were a bit inconsiderate. At some point a serving tray was placed next to our table and left for the entire meal. It was still there when we left and required that I grab it and move it out of the way before being able to get up and leave. We were one of the last tables in the area, so it appeared the staff didnt want to bother cleaning up. At one point during the meal there was an overwhelming smell of bleach that completely overpowered everything else.
For the price you pay its totally not worth it. If you get a pasta meal its 15 dollars and another 5 dollars if you want meat .. not to mention you literally get TWO cotton ball sized meatballs and very little noodles . Im giving two stars since our noodles we under cooked and they fixed it . As well as me being a sauce lover, its a very dry pasta, and they were willing to give me extra sauce upon request . They didnt give you an option of butter when they served you bread its just olive oil on a plate ... with no seasoning . We ate on the roof top which was pretty ,but theyre was no music or any form of entertainment. The kids menu is very small with only four or five options , not to mention the games are directed to 12 year olds . Nothing to entertain a young child . Ive never been so admit to give a place a review like this one. The service is very nice and the building appealing. The entire back of the menu is alcoholic beverages and they are willing to accommodate for any complaints so hopefully this review helps .
Very very very disappointed with my dining experience at Palio. Our dining experience lasted 2 hours and we ordered all of our food within the first 20 minutes of sitting down. Our appetizer (cheese) and salads took approximately 45 minutes to arrive at our table. After finishing these our entrees took about another 20 minutes to come out. We only received 1 apology for the wait from the host and were not compensated in any manner for our extended wait in an almost empty restaurant. There were periods of time where we wouldn’t see our waitress for 20+ minutes and a refill on soda would take over 10 minutes. I typically am very patient and understanding when things take a little bit longer but this dining experience was outrageous. Will likely not be coming back to this establishment anytime soon.
Fantastic place. Their pesto based chicken and sun-dried tomatoes dish is great. The chicken parmesan sauce is so good, you can definitely taste the freshness in their homemade sauces. You will be speechless while indulging in their fantastic take on tiramisu. This is my favorite Italian restaurant in town.
Horrible experience ! Took 30 min to get a cocktail , service was terrible , so many fruit flies, got a grilled salmon ceaser salad absolutley bland salmon way over cooked , son got chicken alfredo really had no cheesie sauace. Waitress on numerous occassions dropped food at the table before we could even order waters and ask for condiments. Did I mention all the flies . Tonight was first time there dont see us going back not worth it. .
Today I had a great dining experience at Palio. Alex was my server. She did a very great job. She kept me company. She made sure my food was tasting delicious. I had meatballs and I also had the Pizza Carne Amorne with the cauliflower crust. Alex did a great job. Thank you Alex! Gavin, Nick and Chef Joe also came to speak to me as well. I had a great time!
There are a number of things I like about 75% and a few things approaching 85%.The atmosphere is nice, can be loud and felt a bit chilly last night. Their south wall seating puts diners heads at near headlight level for the cars parking immediately outside. This made for distraction and a bit of visual discomfort a few times while at my table. The food had some quality ingredients. I could pick some of them out. I found their execution to be inconsistent and lacking in nuance. This left each dish short of wonderful but not terribly far away.I enjoyed my main dish. I can tell its first creation was probably five stars, at least for awhile. Im guessing its been delegated to others to prepare and has lost 15% or so if its magic, an important fifteen percent. I found each of the four items I sampled to be lacking in varied degrees.Last night we had our first noticeable accumulation of snow. I mentioned I liked my main dish, enough that I went to sop up some of the sauce with the bread. I was surprised to find the bread chilly inside, making me wonder if it just came from a freezer or was recently delivered. The inside of the bread was literally cold to my touch. They had a full house including a special event last night. Our server was rushed but kind. I expect the rest of the staff may have been too. Ill probably give them another try, but wont feel hurried to do so.
Our experience here was average. Although Ive lived in town for decades, Ive only been here a handful of times. The waitress, who was mostly attentive, relayed that they are a scratch kitchen. This surprised me as I never knew that. It turns out our definitions of scratch kitchen differ from each other. While I enjoyed my dinner of whitefish, my gf ordered fettuccine with a red sauce of some type. Their fettuccine was made by a company in Canton, MI. This is not close what scratch kitchen means. I think what they mean is they arent buying already made meal portions. Palios undercooked it as it was mostly hard and stuck together. The sauce sparse and just covered the noodles. I was a bit surprised by the lack of sauce when it came to the table. Plus, we saw at least one fruit fly. In general, the prices are reasonable, probably average for Ann Arbor. Our service was average. And the food was average. A 3-star review for an average restaurant.
The food here is so good! And the waiters are extensively trained for fine dining. Make sure you make a reservation though because its very crowded. Like most Ann Arbor restaurants of this caliber your meal will not be cheap. There is a parking structure right behind the restaurant which is very convenient. If you are not sure what to get the waiter is trained to help you with your selection, hell be sure to ask questions. Palio specializes in pastas and Italian fare and Seafood. My scallops were cooked perfectly!
First, Google lists Palio as a Southern Italian restaurant. Thats actually incorrect; the restaurants food is in fact Northern Italian, as its name, Palio,, suggests (the Palio is a famous horse race in Siena, Italy, in Tuscany). Now, for the meal, it was quite good. We had a variety of dishes, including an excellent plate of salumi and cheese, a very good Tuscan bean soup, and good pasta and pizza as well. The parmesan-and-breadcrumb-encrusted fish was OK, not bad but not great. My compliments to the service: we were there the night of the Michigan-Notre Dame game, and, not surprisingly, the place was packed. Despite this, they managed todo an excellent job seating us and bringing up the meal.
I specially called to ask if they were serving a limited menu, or if they were serving their normal menu. I was informed they were serving their normal menu. My husband and I made the drive and the couple things we usually order were not on the “limited menu”. Have been going there for years and will never be back!!!! Don’t waste your time or money!!!!
Made a reservation which was useless since we waited 1/2 past reservation to be seated and watched a later reservation get seated first. The complimentary bread was good but the olive oil was not. There was no butter as an alternative. We were seated in a stairwell. The calamari appetizer was overcooked and chewy. My wine was served in an oversized shot glass not a wine glass. The waiter did his best to compensate, very courteous. All in all, it was very disappointing.
The fresh pasta is what really makes this place stand out ahead of other Americanized Italian restaurants in the area. Sorry, but their is no such thing as Chicken Alfredo anywhere in Italy. The bread is fresh and they infuse their own Oilve oil which is amazing. Great Americanized Italian Food!
Had a reservation there last night and once seated the service was very bad. It wasnt very busy but even at 8pm they told us theybran out of bread. On top of that, we had to wait over 30 minutes just for our appetizers. So we really had no food at all for the first half our of being there despite ordering pretty quickly. We asked the manager about the food and he said 5 minutes which became a good 30+ min.Our reservation was for around 8 but did not get out food on the table until 930 pm. The food was good although the noodles were not cooked as long as Id have preferred. Probably wouldnt come again though. If the service was that slow without even half the place filled, cant imagine how slow it would be when actually busy.
Waited an hour and 15 minutes for a meal that came out cold and clumpy (it was the seafood linguini). They remade my food which took 10 minutes? So why did I have to wait 1h15min the first time? Still charged me full price for my meal. Well played... Never going there again. Much better options in Ann Arbour. Hideous.
Service is always decent, but try to book a reservation if you have a larger party. The wait can be bad.The food is good, but some of the options are more American then Italian. If youre looking for cream sauce pasta there arent many options, just Alfredo which is good.
I love their pasta, country style Italian, especially their pesto with penne. Arrabiata is also very good but it doesn’t seem consistent in its spicy flavoring. I also prefer more sauce! They’re a little spartan. Love the ambience of the restaurant and the wait staff is very good!
We had a wonderful meal and a charming waitress. However, we were seated at a table in the far corner of the mostly empty restaurant, we arrived about 5:00 on this Saturday. This table is surrounded by three doors, one of which seems to be a storage closet, which the staff needed to access, and hang their coats and bags on. This seemed to be a shift change, since there was several people using this coat rack. Another door is an exit, letting a cold draft directly on us. We were dubious about this table when we were first seated there and found our fears well founded. No diner should ever be seated there unless the entire rest of the tables are full. The rest of the seating, and we have dined at the Palio many times, are cozy. This table is hostile and poorly lit. A major blot on what would have been a 5 star review. Result 3 stars.
Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen and this one is not quite worth that much. What a waste of time to eat there. Or try to eat there. With another couple, we made early reservations for dinner on a Thursday. It was not busy. We ordered and we all received appetizers after a short wait. After a little longer wait, the other couple received their entrees. We waited 15 to 20 minutes and were finally able to flag down our waitress. Asked about the missing entrees, she looked at the table like we were speaking a foreign language, and said she didnt know, and offered that they were usually all delivered to the table at the same time. But she would find out what happened. She came back saying that they had lost our order and that they would be putting us on a priority to get our orders out. After another 20 minutes, or so, the missing entrees arrived. The other couple had finished eating, by this time. The side dishes were wrong on one order. My dinner, pasta with olive oil and garlic and sausage was not even warm with all the pasta stuck together in a mass, similar to a ball of string, only less appetizing. That dinner was sent back. When asked why she hadnt come back to our table after the first two dinners were served, she said that she was really busy with other tables. Then the waitress went even farther to ignore us, except to deliver the bill. A coffee would have been nice considering I didnt eat dinner.Save your money and take your appetite elsewhere.
Went today for Valentines day, took our 23m old and he was amazingly well behaved thankfully but we received pretty much no service. the waitress was checking the other 2 tables next to us but not us.. I had to flag her down, maybe we were discriminated because we brought a kid or because we are an asian/white family? who knows but the service was bad and there really was no excuse for it since when we got there it was not super busy yet. Not to mention my noodles were over cooked, tasted terrible and my sons tortelini sauce tasted worse than jar sauce. We went once in Sept and it was good, what happened? not sure why but I feel like we got left overs from the day before and we were disregarded maybe because we brought a little one on valentines day.. either way we will never be back there ever. Worst dining experience in Ann Arbor and it is not excusable. now I can see people being annoyed if our little one was screaming but he thankfully was just perfect the whole entire time not causing a problem, but the waitress seemed to have an issue with us we left very unsatisfied . I feel like I need to spread the word about this place, do not go if you want bad service and bad italian food.
Waited 20 mins for a drink and then a further 40 mins for our food. Caeser salad consisted of lettuce, miniature piece of salmon and a single crouton - nice touch! Mixed shellfish pasta had a single shrimp. Mussels pasta smelt a bit funky but tasted ok. Kept on having to flag down our server for drinks, water etc. Sangria was a highlight except the pitcher was completely loaded with ice so the actual serving size was measly. Outdoor terrace is a nice touch but overall experience was a bad one.
This used to be a really good Italian restaurant. I dont know if they were having an off night or if its not so good anymore. Was a game night, but we had reservations. Shoved into dark & loud room with way too many tables for the space. Pretty sure our waiter was bus boy. Food nothing special. If I go back, I hope to find that this was anamoloy & former glory restored.
Palio continues to be our favorite Italian restaurant in town. The food is always fresh and excellent. You can even get a nice grappa to end your meal. Also - now the rooftop has the same full menu as the restaurant, so you can enjoy the view and still get the same great food.
This place was NOT good. Seriously, how is this restaurant still in business? Cold food, bad service, overpriced. Never again. Hope we dont get sick from the mussels we sent back tonight. And because we were a party of 8, we were required to pay 18% gratuity. Never again. Go somewhere else.
We went for my daughters birthday on Dec 19, 2017 .The service was very bad. I had to ask for bread and olive oil. They brought water once and never refilled. The food is over priced and so little and salty. No more free dessert on bday. When I asked , she rudly said we have given out too many free desserts !
Disappointing. We were lured here after tasting their bruschetta at the Ann Arbor Taste festival and found when we arrived that a different menu is served upstairs than downstairs. We came twice to indulge in both dining experiences and found the menu frustrating as you cannot even get beer on tap downstairs. Even more, the bruschetta has a 30 second life span. The roof top atmosphere is really nice though.

2022-06-20Absolutely delicious food, cool/intriguing atmosphere, and great location. Haven’t tried the rooftop yet, but the restaurant inside was a great experience. The calamari was some of the best I’d ever had - crispy & flavorful. Really decent size portions too.Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some high quality Italian that is reasonably priced!

2022-04-29Great place if youre looking for some good Italian food! The staff is super nice. A good mix of veg & non-veg options. Desserts are amazing but the quantity is LARGE so if you have a poor appetite like mine then share yours or else call for your individual dessert. Would totally recommend this place if youre celebrating an occasion. Its a fine-dine place for sure!

2022-01-29Delicious Italian food. Tonight we ordered carry out. I chose the Cavatappi Con Pollo and couldn’t have ordered a more delicious and warming meal for a cold January day. Wonderful flavors and very fresh. Still warm even after delivery and after it sat for a bit waiting for me to put the kids to bed 🙂 highly recommended Palio!!!

2021-09-13Both food and drinks were amazing. Great price for fresh, authentic food. Incredible waiter as well (Tyler). One of the people in my party requested a certain dish (cant think of the name, sorry!!) and he suggested they pick another dish, as that one had been returned frequently lately. I wish more wait staff could be upfront and honest like him!

2022-05-03I’d recommend against ever coming here on a Monday. Got what was definitely at least one day old Shrimp Scampi (perhaps older.) The odor was immediately off-putting, and it was irregularly reheated, possible even microwaved. Told the waiter when he had a moment and did receive an apology, but in retrospect as the dish was barely touched it should’ve received an immediate refund/comp. Perhaps Monday at a restaurant means Buyer Beware, but we wanted to celebrate a special occasion. And even on a Monday, such a low kitchen standard is unacceptable

2022-05-26The service was awful. First, the waiter forgot about us, and we sat for 45min. Then he forgot that we are 4, not 2. He went to take two more glasses of water and again disappeared. And so on. I dont know how a previously respected restaurant can have such talented employees.Food also was so-so. Not awful, but not for that money that we paid

2022-06-19I came in for dinner, got seated right away. The waitress was fairly new. I ordered wine she came back said they didnt have that one, I reordered, she came bank 10 minutes later and said they didnt have that one. She suggested a wine that was totally not what I was looking for. The salad took a really long time coming out, and it was very small and mostly wilted and brown. My water glass had lipstick on it! Not mine! I had taken a drink before I realized, so I called for a manager. He offered dessert and apologized. The server told me the very limited dessert menu, I couldnt have any of it, Im allergic. So I got nothing. I had to ask if off was possible to have them take off the amount a dessert would have cost. I was dissapointed. I saved up for awhile to go to Palio, I thought it would be so good.

2022-05-29It took me 50 minutes to get a double vodka and soda. I had to ask 3 times. Our food took two hours to arrive. They forgot salads that were ordered, and had to be asked about those. We had a party of 15 so I understand a little chaos but it was absurd. We had no silverware and water was hard to come by. Food was mediocre at best. Only plus was the company I was in and the roof top!

2022-05-10Sadly, this place seems to have gone downhill, or maybe they were having an off night. But here was my experience.Went on a Sunday evening. They were not busy at all. Host told the person seating me to take me to table 81. We get to where my table is supposed to be.....she doesnt know which one is 81. Asked someone. They didnt know which one was 81. They finally figured it out and I was seated. I ordered a Martini and was brought a Manhattan instead. I ordered the meatball appetizer and they were cold. Server took them back and brought new ones, which were also cold. Took those back and after 15 minutes brought me fresh ones but it was quite obvious that really all they did was take the ones that I sent back and microwaved them. Soup was bland. Entree was delicious but quite small.Ive had MUCH better experiences here in the past. But tonight was enough to give me pause when it comes to selecting this restaurant in the future.

2022-05-10We ad a large group event here, but the place served hardly any food for a lot of money. Literally a few pieces of penne with tomato sauce, a couple of chunks of lettuce and a fraction of a meatball and some stale bread is considered their $30 dinner. The location was nice, but the food service was slow. Their cash bar was however quick to serve you more drinks for more money. The few bites of food we did have did taste ok though.I would recommend to Never host a group event here.
