Penny Reds in Detroit
My 1st time trying this place. Around the corner from me I walked and ordered a 10pc, biscuits, potato salad and fries. The chicken was so darn juicy and hot. Have up to 4 sauce choices. The crispiness of the meat is to die for. Fries were wonderfully tasty and sliced perfectly. Biscuits are good and could be a breakfast fav for me. Potato salad tasted like too much dill and not creamy enough. But overall I give it a definite return.
The set up is pretty unique, order to go or in house to take your food next door to the The Brakeman. The food comes fairly fast, you got a buzzer while you wait. I ordered the classic chicken sandwich, comes with ranch and honey; I also ordered a side of fries. I tried each other sauces, they were worth trying. The food was a step up from traditional bar food but nothing too special. The chicken can be pretty expensive for a bucket (5 pieces for $13).
It was by mere accident I went here. It is by far the best accident I ever ate. It is the best fried chicken I have ever eaten I dare a person to find me something better. For real tho. You can tell its fresh. Its made for you and only you. Those honey glazed biscuits you see there....they broke their wings as they fell from heaven they are just that good. Fries are solid. The sauces are, like in many places that make their own, designed to suit many different tastes. You have to figure out which one was crafted just for you. For me it was that honey mustard. The barbecue and ranch were also good runner ups. (The ketchup was solid and the relish-like mayo was also great for what it was but while I am not a relish person I cant take away from those who relish in it.) This was food that truly made me happy enough for me to nearly cuss out loud just to express the joy it gave me.
I went there 11/1 around 4:30pm and they had just opened up at 4pm no crowd, the line was short and my wait time was low. The atmosphere was very inviting and warm. I got the original Chicken sandwich, sidewinder fries and honey butter box for about $15+. It was delicious I will be back! My only complaint is I didnt see anywhere to leave a tip!
Chicken was always good and the potatoes are the best however for some reason this time my chickens seem to be overbreaded which made it kind of flowery under some of the larger pieces but this was only the first time happening for me but my wings and the drumsticks were awesome. I would recommend Penny reds and I have.. recommendation is just to be sure not to over batter it cuz it was very flowery almost like when you get some bad cod fish or some shrimps when they over batter it. .
I had really high expectations due to the numerous highly rated reviews via Google and word of mouth. I wasnt really impressed with the items I tried. I ordered the Classic chicken sandwich, crispy Brussels and Mexican street corn and since it was my 1st visit the cashier suggested I try their Honey Butter Biscuits. I must admit, the Honey Butter Biscuits were the best part of my meal! The hot honey sauce that comes on the Classic Chicken Sandwich was good but the chicken filet was lacking in flavor. The Mexican street corn looked better than it tasted. The Crispy Brussels were underwhelming and Im a big fan of Brussel sprouts. In my opinion this place is a bit overpriced for a fried chicken restaurant but I am going to make a return visit to try their regular fried chicken buckets.Oh and the Cashier was very helpful and Super friendly!
Penny Reds is my go-to place in town. My friends had told me great things about this place and it definitely lived up to the hype. I love everything about Penny Reds: the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the people. The bucket of chickens one of the best I have ever had. Highly recommend. Hope to be back soon!
I just really really dug the portrait of the duck from “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” on the wall. i don’t know if it was intentional, but i’ve been smiling all day since i’ve seen it, it just made me chuckle. that aside, the chicken was great though, next time i’ll be sure to try the honey biscuits!
The best damn fried chicken sandwich ever. From the sauce, to the bun and the pickle.Ooh wee and dont forget the actual chicken on the sandwich. Im telling everyone I know about this place. The biscuits are the best damn biscuits Ive had in my life. Whoever thought to dip them in honey butter for us must be an angel here on earth. Have a beer while during your short wait too.Ive had to edit my review since two years ago something about this place has changed. Ive ordered food from here twice in the last month and both times my experience has been underwhelming. Im not sure if they have new management or what but I keep getting served basically cold food and it definitely is missing its pizazz.
Been on a fried chicken tasting recently. Visited Penny Red yesterday and had mixed feelings. The service wasnt the best. When it is just a couple people waiting to order and the person taking the order just stands there. We have a problem. The wait for the food wasnt bad. When it came time to pick up the order, the same person was too busy talking about their blog and YouTube channel rather than making sure my order was complete. The chicken IS BANGING! The breast (which Im not a fan but using as my new barometer) was moist/juicy with great flavor.
As I started to place an order, the cashier told me what part of the chicken they were out of and I asked her can they make up the order without the one piece I didnt want since they were out of the piece I did want. She repeated what she originally said so I asked her again because it wasnt an answer to my question. She appeared agitated and stomped off to look for the manager. No one knew where he was and she still didnt answer me or ask the employees expediting the food orders. She said, I am just the cashier. Thats why I expected her to ask the other employees the question I posed. I was not asking for a handout. I can gladly spend my money somewhere else.
Really tasty food, at slightly higher prices. Went twice during opening week and the quality of the food was good from the get-go. I got the Classic Chicken sandwich, fries, and dunked biscuits. A pretty good amount of food for a guy that can eat, totalled out to $16. The biscuits are to die for, you have to try them dunked! They have some fun, different sauces for the chicken/fries. They have a slice of the day pie from local favorite, Sister Pie. Friendly staff, quick service. You can sit in the adjoining bar (The Brakeman) to eat, or take it to go.
Best fried chicken I’ve ever had. Insane amounts of flavor and incredibly juicy. The honey butter dunked biscuits are absolutely stupid good. What really makes this place though is the staff. It’s slammed in there every time I’ve been and the staff is so friendly and helpful. I’ll be back every chance I get
Everything I GOT was excellent, but they forgot all 4 sauces that were supposed to come with the order. 5 piece chicken were juicy and seasoned great. Potato salad was interesting and different. The dunkd biscuits were phenomenal! Cole slaw was good, the Dirty Coup was great, and the pineapple penny was tasty. Sidewinder fries were average seasoned fries (was supposed to have a sauce!). My only problem was no sauce. I can only imagine how much better the food would have been.
This is all hype go to gus famous fried chicken instead penny reds has to much breading over priced not tasty at all chicken smh do not waste your money if you want good chicken go to gus fried chicken I went straight there after I threw penny reds in the trash trust me
Absolutely the worst Do not go there, this a warning This is the Worst food in the City, Detroit Frozen Banquet Chicken, I demand my money back..then I will ✋️ talking About that Chicken, thats Out that Box, Yall Selling, Its Not even Fresh Chicken, The Public Has A riteToo Know, They Are Going To Know..👎👎👊👎
Ordered thru a delivery service ,the food arrived in a timely fashion but devoid of all sauces ..yet I digress.I ordered the chicken pieces ,the dirty coup, the potato salad, fries and buscuits..total way over $50 .All items were good. I was impressed by the honey biscuits and the chicken sandwich. My brother likes Gus better but I disagree. .
First off the chicken sandwiches are awesome and the biscuits are even better but the best thing about this place is by far the service. Because I had just come from the Tigers game where purses arent allowed, I had been keeping my phone in my back pocket (which is not something I normally do). I had realized it was missing and the staff immediately saw my distress and began to help me look. They were extremely helpful and kind and genuinely seemed concerned. One of the staff members was already looking in the bathroom before I even made it down there myself. We did locate my phone which must have slipped out of my pocket at a seat by the bar. Thank you all for helping me. I want to give a special shout out to Ryan and Mirazh. You kids are fabulous. Major appreciation to the whole staff. Good food, good beer, amazing service. If Im ever in from Chicago again I will definitely be returning.
Hit or Miss satisfactory, been three times and two were a little disappointing. First time gave them the benefit of the doubt... Pandemic. Second time had me craving a third time...third time a bust. Saturday eve cooks seem to be the best. Chicken already pretty expensive...chicken has gotta be the cheapest thing out here!! sandwich by itself is $10. Came with one thin piece of wilted lettus and the sauce from the classic was all on the bag by the time I ate it.. No fries or drink, just sandwich... for that price, please make sure that everything is good...totally not worth $10 by itself.. Chicken thighs toooo much fat and skin. I have had Guss chicken and I will for sure stick with Guss. SERVICE was A1 but I also paid for A1 food!!!
Delicious chicken, good slaw and potato salad... the meal was amazing. My only complaint was the “sauces” I ordered “sweet and tangy” (literally ketchup) and the “joy and pain” (I’m 99% sure it was just franks red-hot) not enough to deduct a star but call things what they are so people know enough to order different sauces to try (I have ketchup and franks on hand already)... I’ll definitely be back, but I’ll try different “sauces” next time.
Went to take a drive down town to see the lights and decided to try Penny Reds. My son had dined here pre covid and found it pretty good. We ordered the regular chicken sandwich and a spicy version, fries and of course the dunked biscuits! The chicken lacked seasoning. Biscuits were missing something? My son thought they needed more sweetness. Now the fries... amazing! May try again once things reopen. Sometimes you just hit an off day?🤷🏻♀️Staff was awesome!
Loved Penny Reds! Currently, during the pandemic, you can only order online for pick-up or delivery. If you do pick-up, you have to order online and pick-up only when ready. You can wait for your order and eat what you order inside The Brakeman next door. The chicken sandwiches were great, the sidewinder fries were great, and the honey biscuits were the bomb.
Best fried chicken in the city. Best biscuits in the city. Wow. This tiny little place packs a punch. Its got a great vibe and the workers are friendly and fast. The chicken itself is always a nice big piece, not a lot of bones, and so much good seasoning and crackling skin. The smallest you can get is a 5 piece bucket or one of their signature sandwiches. The biscuits are phenomenal when dunked in their honey butter. The sidewinder fries are delicious and have a great seasoning. Their honey mustard was my favorite sauce out of all of them. Its a little pricey but completely worth it! This is a must go to especially after a few drinks!
I ordered delivery through the restaurants website. They apparently use doordash to deliver. The person who delivered gave me buffalo wild wings and said thats what he had for me. Ive been calling the restaurant for the last two days and it goes directly to voice mail and says the mail box is full. Ive emailed the restaurant AND the hospitality group that owns them and had no response. The only response Ive had is from doordash who say they can do nothing and that I should contact the restaurant.
We hadnt been to Penny Reds again since our first time a year ago so we decided to get the 10pc bucket, biscuits, Brussel sprouts, and fries.Chicken: very crispy outside, juicy and soft inside. However, you can tell it is just low quality chicken. The turn off were yellow spots on the chicken skin once we investigated under the breading. We probably wouldnt have eaten any of it had it not been coated/ hidden.Biscuits: loved themFries: Loved them tooBrussel Sprouts: tastes good but way too saucy hence half the container that was soaked in sauce was too salty. We threw it away.We will not be going back there for fried chicken unless they upgrade the quality.
Stopped by on Tuesday, a day after they opened, and grabbed a bucket and biscuits. Chicken is crispy, well fried, and juicy, but it borders on flavorless. Would love to see some more seasoning in the batter to kick it up a notch. The chicken doesnt stand up on its own without sauce at the moment. That said, the green jalapeno sauce was great. We found the biscuits to be a bit weird... the appearance of a Pillsbury roll biscuit, covered in a sticky sweet sauce, and a heavy gummy texture, not what I was expecting. A classic buttermilk biscuit would have been more welcome. Overall, I love what theyre trying to do here, but it still needs improvement. Hoping to see that in the coming months once theyve been open for a while and have a chance to work out the kinks.
Food not that good, customer service terrible, didnt get all my order because the employee was flirting with some girls, they dont have a number so you Cant call them potatoe salad very nasty fries where soft not cooked long enough,, I live in Flint so its not like I could go right back and get rest of my order Will never go here again. An hour drive and $45 wasted
Service was subpar from the actual Penny Red’s counter. The biscuits were great. The chicken sandwich was great. The chicken wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s no special seasonings, it’s definitely not the best chicken on earth and it isnt the best chicken in Detroit. I prefer gus’s over this restaurant that’s my honest opinion from someone who’s been eating fried chicken their entire life, this is no life changer.
This chicken is AMAZING! Very delicious and crispy. Chicken sandwiches are FULFILLING!!! You pay for what you get and boy do they fill you up. Customer service is awesome they were so warming and the building itself is so cool to look at. I will be a returning customer.
Been here before and thought it was reliable. Just placed a pick up order on their website and was in the restaurant and staff acted like they didn’t know my order even after giving them my order number. Placed my order an hour before picking up and paid immediately but they somehow ran out of my food. Staff locked the door on me when I tried to go back inside and get my food.
Yes, I know that you can take your chicken into the Brakeman next door, but that place was a little loud when we visited so we ended up taking our chicken back to our hotel room. OMG if this isnt the best fried chicken on the planet! I mean WOW! Absolutely loved it. If I could make one suggestion: wings! There are times that the other pieces of chicken just dont work when yore trying to grab a bite to eat. A six- or ten-piece wing box would be a gift from heaven.
Weird set up, didnt know if we could sit in the bar of the other spot adjacent. They need some kind of sign or something. Service subpar. Chicken quality was not up to my standards with no flavor/seasoning. Biscuits were ok, chicken sandwich meh, wont be returning. If you like Gus chicken you will be disappointed here.
I am a Chicken Fanatic...I 1st heard about this place last year (2019) and said to myself Im going to try it. Never got around it...Ive been a busy bee. Earlier this year my husband and I finally got some much needed time to ourselves. If you know what I mean😏 We got a room at Motorcity Casino and I didnt want to try the hotel food and said Hey Babe there is this chicken place I wanna try a few miles away. We jump into the car and hurried off due to us wanting to get back to the room. I placed an order for a 5 piece, 2 orders of dunked biscuits, and some sidewinder fries. We get back to the room and baby let me tell you...I have never had some chicken this good! Now we are pretty much regulars. Try this Chicken and thank me later😊
I feel that 2 stars is too low but 3 would be too high. I have passed by this place a bunch of times downtown and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered a 5 piece with fries and 2 biscuits and my total was $ 21 dollars.I was underwhelmed by the food. The chicken I had was either over breaded or fried a bit too hard for my taste. I am not sure. The biscuits were ok. I did not try any sauces so I cannot say how that influences things. The fries were unremarkable as well. This place is not terrible it is just not worth the price.
Friendly Courteous Fast! But so fast one of my pieces of chicken werent done! Took my appetite. But, willing to try it again and eat there, so I couldve got a replacementnon the spot. If you like heavily breaded chicken, go for it. Great vibe at there partner place next door ..I will eat in and order less food. Biscuits are delicious!
Would be superhelpful if the sauces had descriptions & at least common allergen ingredients & sugar info for diabetics listed on the website or any contact info for the restaurant so customers can ask. What was supposed to be a special treat left us EXTREMELY disappointed.
Chicken is perfectly fried. Seasoning could use a little more KICK. All the sauces are awesome! Brussels are Great! Try the Honey Butter dipped biscuits (Bix). Sidewinder fries are hefty potato curly fries.Totally cashless. All self-service for food. Token system for beer.
Went in there, it was empty. I wanted to get the 5 piece meal, which costs $13, so I did not want any white meat since I do not like it. I was told they would not take a request for white or dark meat so I would be forced to pay full-price for food I would potentially not eat. I spoke with the head chef and manager who both refused to accommodate my simple request.Unfortunately we were not able to come to an understanding and I had to leave on principle. I was pretty disappointed because I really wanted some fried chicken but I was EVEN MORE disgusted that these restaurants are coming to the city to soak up the cash as we are starting to do better but are unwilling to actually accommodate the people they serve.
The chicken itself is flavorless and not the best quality. It is heavily battered and has a weird powder like consistency - my guess is that they season it after cooking it, which is...not how you fry chicken. Given that this is the only thing they do, Im going to have to leave a rare, negative review.
Well flavored chicken with pretty wholesome sides. I thought the potatoe wedges tasted a lot like KFCs. Thats not a bad thing in my opinion. Prices may be higher than KFC or Popeyes. Its worth it though. The wait wasnt too long on a busy Friday for my friends and I either
I was initially impressed after eating a wing from the very top layer of the 10/piece bucket of chicken I purchased. Yum! However I was totally disappointed and in fact felt quite deceived when after trying a second piece below the top layer. To my unpleasant surprise at least 2/3rds of the bucket of chicken tasted rather stale and was really dry as if it had been prepared a day or at least many hours earlier!!! I would have called to complain because I normally dont take the time to submit a review, yet there was no phone number listed on the website.
This place is tasty, just needs to get the online ordering ironed out - I’ve placed orders through their website for delivery a few times and once the driver gets there Penny Red’s says they don’t have the order so it gets cancelled. Recommend just going there to order.
Food looks better in pictures than it tastes in person. Drink tokens seem fun but at the same time whats the point. This is not the ideal spot for a date unless its a double date. In other words it meant for a crew. Finding parking is the most difficult thing about this place
The fried chicken is fried to perfection! The honey dipped butter biscuits will change your life and the fries are a must!Penny Reds is take out only. However, Brakeman’s is connected so you can carry your Penny Reds into Brakeman’s and enjoy your food there. If you sit down in Brakeman’s to enjoy your fried chicken, you will notice how modern the environment is, they have a few game tables and if you purchase four or more beer tokens, you get access to one of the games! They also have tap tables that a party of 8 can enjoy (if you pay for it, of course)!Overall Penny Reds was good and paired with Brakeman’s makes for a great night out to enjoy craft beer or other beverages along with some good ol’ comfort food!
The food was excellent, but i did have a few issues. It may be kinks as a new business owner, but my order was missing an item that i paid for so make sure you check your order before you Leave. Secondly, you cannot call ahead or place your order online, so expect a decent wait. Lastly my food was pricey but i attribute that to location. Otherwise i would definitely recommend and return again.
Food was amazing but the service was bad. The women taking my order was extremely rude. When I went to pick up my order and ask for sauce she wouldn’t tell me what the options were and proceeded to throw sauces at me not asking if they were what I wanted. All 5 of my friends that were with me had the same experience.
This chicken was disgusting. The chicken was all broken up on the inside like somebody took a hammer to it. The coating they use is unidentifiable and falls off the chicken. And they dont season the chicken. And its way overpriced. I will never get this chicken again. I can fry waaayyyyy better at home.😂😂
I went to Penny Reds last week on a Saturday. My friend and I ordered two biscuits. While waiting for my biscuits, I asked my friend to get my change. The lady working the register told my friend she didnt have a nickle and it was just 7 cents. How rude. If I was 7 cents short for the food they wouldnt let me get it.

2022-05-05So so good. Super friendly service, one of the best chicken sandwiches ever (bow down before the K-Town Cutlet) and get your biscuits half and half, just so you can tell just how good a biscuit dipped in honey really is. Walk through the doors into the Brakeman and get yourself a Midwest beer to go with your food because they are so good together.

2022-04-13I’ll go back to try the chicken sandwich but the bone in chicken wasn’t good. It’s too hyped up and too much in price not to live to it. I’ve had better chicken at Popeyes or KFC. The drunken biscuits were good but need salt. Their Brussels sprouts were too sweet for my liking.

2022-05-03Amazingly seasoned chicken. Huge crunchy spiral waffle fries. Buttery, breadcrumb covered Brussels sprouts. Warm, stuff, honey biscuits!Get beer or a cocktail from the Brakemen next door. Great service, amazing food. Great place to hang out after work.

2022-03-14I visited this place today with my honey for our Sunday date and let me just start off by saying. The biscuits dipped with the honey butter absolutely wonderful. The chicken was everything and more, it was crispy and juicy. Make sure everyone order their own order of fries because they taste so good your not going to want to share. The variety of house made sauces will make your tastebuds go crazy. Will definitely be returning. Thanks and keep up the great job. I recommend this place

2021-12-10Easily among the top 5 best fried chicken Ive ever had. Extremely juicy and perfectly crunchy skin. Even the white meat was awesome. Get a bucket for sure. Also very fast 👍Just wish they had livers/gizzards

2021-04-17Fantastic little spot downtown for fresh fried chicken. The chicken was hot and crispy and delicious. The biscuits were flaky and tasty. I really enjoy their desserts, too. I think they switch them up frequently. I enjoyed the aesthetic and branding of the containers, too. You can tell they take pride in their food.

2021-09-30If you are looking for some pleasant service and good chicken in the Downtown Detroit area, then Penny Reds is your place.FYI: You have 2 different doors to choose from. A door for takeout and a door for dine in. Of course I chose to dine in because I had to give you the vibe of the place. At the entrance you will have security with a wrist band waiting for you (so have your I.D. out) because they have a booth to purchase drink tokens for alcoholic beverages. But back to this CHICKEN!I ordered a 20pc for my guests along with fries and 2 biscuits for myself. The fries were delicious per Melon but I say that my honey biscuits were better! The crispness of the chicken was perfect and the chicken was very hot! The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because with that much chicken dropped to be fried it was a few pieces that still had uncooked flour so it wasnt cooked completely. But overall a great experience. The employees were really nice kept the sauce area clean and the atmosphere was great. So check it out if you have a chance and let me know what you think 😉.#According2teau 🦄 👽

2022-07-02I only give it a 3 because the biscuits were good. Otherwise, I would have rated it a 2. The 5 piece chicken was not good, Ive had better and for the price and it should have been outstanding. First time trying this place and it will probably be my last. I got my order delivered and I only received 2 out of the 3 sauces. Only 4 out of 5 pieces of chicken were in the bucket, when I paid for a 5 piece. There is no number listed to call.

2020-09-08The honey butter biscuits are probably going to be the best thing you’ve ever tasted and will change the way you look at biscuits forever. If you haven’t tried them yet don’t be a noob and get it dry. MAKE SURE IT IS HONEY DIPPED. The classic honey chicken sandwich is better than anything you’ll get at chick fil a, Popeyes, shake shack and brome. The honey just brings it full circle and knocks you into an LSD trip like food experience. Yes I’m talking it up, and it’s for a reason.
