Comment: Fine, but the customer service people seemed sort of casually surprised to be asked for help and certainly weren’t trying to offer. Also, some poser in an expensive outdoorsy jacket and impractically tight jeans cut me in line when I had an urgent need for fuel canisters for my travel trailer and I wanted to never again drive through this part of CA.

Comment: On the evening of October 31st around 7:00, I visited the store with the intention of trading in a pair of shoes. To my disappointment, the young man employee on duty declined my trade-in request, stating that my shoes were used. I had researched the trade-in policy online and found that used items were generally accepted as long as they weren’t broken, which led to my confusion and disappointment.I must admit that I felt frustrated by this encounter. It’s essential for businesses to ensure that their staff adheres to their own policies and provides clear and consistent information to customers. However, I can’t definitively say whether the refusal was due to my ethnicity, as I would hope that such incidents are not based on race.In my opinion, the employee’s refusal to accept my trade-in was an unfortunate customer service experience. I believe it’s important for businesses to address these issues and ensure that their staff is well-informed about their trade-in policies to prevent such situations from recurring.

Comment: Very disappointing recent visit. In the past was very pleased but clearly training and concerns are not a priority for management. In the past awesome active employees who love the outdoors wanted to help you find the best equipment. In my recent visit loads of employees on their phones or just standing around in an almost empty store. Only comment to me was dogs only allowed if they are in the dog clothing area so be warned don’t walk there with your dog if you also want to visit clothing areas. My dog is for disabilities but they weren’t concerned about that. Retraining of employees on how to be helpful and happy us highly suggested. Until then I’m shopping online!Visited October 15th 2023

Comment: Generally good. My experiences with REI tend to be positive, and this store is no exception. The staff were helpful when I was trying several hiking boots, and the bike shop was able to do a quick chain replacement to get me back on the road quickly. My only complaint is that my most recent bike tune up saw the front derailleur adjusted so it now shifts worse than it did before (it actually throws the chain). The rest of the work seemed to be done very well, but that did cause me a couple issues the following day.Otherwise, this is my first stop for just about anything outdoor-related.

I used to like the Dublin location but this might be the new favorite.I was helped by 2 women, one at the counter and another who decided to try and help. I distinctly remember before ever getting inside, there was predictable side-to-side lockups of the two businesses across the parking lot, in the stand-alone building that contains a few suites, I will not be mentioning any names of them, knowing I am prone to sensing and am conflictwise to know, I am not being evaded, nor am I about pursuit authority. No such thing.Now, that being something that happened 10 or more years ago, I am here to think of ONLY REI, this review is primarily about only REI:I have never thought seriously of venturing out to the Farallon Islands, which, as a cartographer, I did rename synonymously.So, what I am wondering is: Protectionwise, does REI have what it takes to get all the way there, and all the way back?

I would recommend going to a local bike shop that communicates with their customers better. at least they were able to accept returns from items I purchased online.

Comment: The moment I walked in, the person who greeted me at the door immediately welcomed us in and asked us if we needed help finding anything. We were SPECIFICALLY only here for butane. Took us directly to where they had some and even informed me that it was the only brand they carried. Everyone else who came up to help us after kindof treated us like shoplifters and kept a huge lookout on us. If they saw the other 3people run up to us theyd know that we didnt need help now or the 40seconds before. Regardless, I know its a job and I still appreciate the first person who helped us at the door. Comment: Ive NEVER been treated so rudely at any store before. It was 95° outside and I had my 14 week old puppy with me while running errands. I wanted to check for something I needed there at REI and obviously wasnt going to leave my dog in the car. I know some stores dont allow dogs which I completely understand but because of the weather I thought Id give it a shot and if they said I couldnt bring him with me when I walked in I would have no problem at all! I walked in with my puppy and the person that greeted us at the door was super welcoming and polite, even said oh my gosh your puppy is so cute! The guy NEVER said I couldnt bring my dog in the store! So I proceeded to shop for what I needed. This store has carpet in some areas and I didnt want to risk my puppy having an accident on the carpet so I limited myself to staying on the concrete paths of the store just to be safe. My dog is potty trained but he is still a puppy therefore accidents happen. Unfortunately he had a little accident and peed on the concrete floor a little. My husband quickly went to the bathroom to get some paper towels and soap to clean it as I stayed right there where the accident happened. I didnt want anyone to think I was going to leave it there and not clean it up. Keep in mind that again I was on the concrete area not the carpet so cleaning it was super easy. While my husband was getting the cleaning supplies I was approached by an older woman who was EXTREMELY RUDE and another employee. She was practically announcing to the entire store what had happened with the loudness of her voice and in a mean tone said Maam Im going to have to ask you to leave, your dog just urinated on the floor. There were many other customers around the same area and because of how loud and rude she was saying this they all turned to see what was going on. I said Yes I know he urinated and I apologize, Im standing here next to it because Im going to clean it up and my husband as we speak is getting something to clean it with, again Im sorry. She caused all the customers and employees near the entrance to know why I was walking out of the store so ashamed. She made me feel like I had just committed a crime or something. The fact that she made it such a scene was so unnecessary. I would have left with no problem if they had asked me to but it was embarrassing and uncomfortable for my husband and I. They treated us as if we had done something horrible. I left the store and my husband stayed inside cleaning the floor. I just think that they could have been more discreet about the whole situation and been nicer about it. Even the other customers who witnessed the entire thing said that was so mean. Im never going to set foot in that store again!

Comment: Weve visited this REI store many times before and always appreciated the friendly staff and big selection of products. We visited it again in the middle of COVID19 pandemics this Sunday morning. Hand sanitizer was available at the entrance and the door opened automatically. The store kept one way traffic policy and walking directions were clearly marked on the floor. The store still had a good selection of products with a few customers who kept safe distance with each other. We felt safe and relaxed to walk around the store and found what we needed with help of a very friendly staff. I recommend this store and thumb up for their effort to make the shopping experience pleasant during this crazy time.

Comment: Like most shoppers, Ive only had pleasant experiences with staff at all REI locations. The staff members are generally helpful, courteous, and very knowledgeable. That being said, I prefer coming to Fremont as they typically seem to be fairly well stocked and their employees are even friendlier than other locations. This was cemented by a recent encounter with Sean (sp?) who went above and beyond to help me out! This location is now open for in-store purchases + returns and theyre being very diligent about following covid-19 protocols

Comment: DONT PURCHASE HERE! They LIE ABOUT THEIR RETURN POLICY. If you purchase a bad product, they wont let you return it.I handed my receipt and product tag with item practically new on 1/21/20. I bought a down jacket, REI brand, literally a few days ago. I only wore it for 15 minutes until it felt SO ITCHY because the DOWN FEATHERS KEPT COMING OUT OF THE JACKET AND ONTO MY SHIRT! I left it in my husbands backpack because I didnt want to use it and down went everywhere in it. What a cheap quality fabric. Upon returning it, the female staff at the register said, I SPOKE TO MY MANAGER AND THATS NOT A GOOD REASON TO RETURN. THE DOWN COMING OUT IS THE WAY THE PRODUCT IS. Perhaps she didnt call the manager as I wasnt there when she claimed it happened. I told her Ive never heard of such a return policy. 30 days return policy for most stores is standard. It wasnt even final sale. Ive bought, sold and developed down coats before and never have I heard of this excuse. The fabric is cheap because down comes out so often (1 feather every 16 square inches). With better fabric, closer weave and other reasons, that wouldnt happen. It hasnt been close to 30 days even though their return policy is a year and/or longer (I already checked online regarding their return policy).She went on about how customers take advantage of REIs return policy (example, returns an item 15 years later or an equipment the customer obviously used). What does that have to do with my product!!!!??? Ive purchased clothes and never have I heard of this return policy I told her. I asked if there is a return policy online and she said, NO. THE RETURN POLICY DEPENDS ON THE ITEM. I can understand if its underwear and final sale, but thats not what she meant. I asked if I had originally told her my return is because I didnt like the color, would she have accepted the return. She said, Yes, but thats not the reason. YOU CAN USE THAT REASON AT ANOTHER STORE AND THEY SHOULD ACCEPT IT. Then that upset me more. I think they want to have the best record for least returns or best in sales for their location.I was very upset. As I walked out towards the exit, she asked, Why did it itch? I already explained in detail why it made me itch earlier and she mentioned why itching is not a good reason for return. Why pretend to care as Im walking out the door?I didnt dress inappropriate or have a bad attitude. I just came in and walked to the line. There was only 1 customer in front of me and 1 person behind me. It was in the middle of the day around 4pm, so barely any customers there or in line. Why did she treat me like that?Would have to check, but the law may be different in California...the return policy should be clearly stated where the client makes the transaction. I called another REI store and the staff said, We have a very generous return policy. What you were told at that store is not right.Conclusion: With a contradicting return policy, you never know what you can return. Dont buy something you obviously can return here (example, practically 99% brand new clothing). Other REI stores are further, but was clear about the return policy and said theyll accept my return.

Comment: This review is for Feburary 2018 ski binding installation.I bought skis and bindings online because I wanted purple skis that I hadnt seen in any stores, and I figured I could have REI do the binding installation for me. I was leaving for a ski trip to Utah the next weekend and had heard that installation would only take a couple of days. However, 3 days after dropping my skis/bindings to the store, they called to tell me that I had bought demo bindings which require a very specific tool to install them, and they were going to call all the REIs in the whole Bay Area to find the tool. They didnt find it, and at this point I was stressing out that they took so long to do this and told me 3 days later, which meant there were only 4 days left until my trip. The employees and manager I talked to were all very nice and did everything they could to help. The manager finally said that it would be better to buy new bindings and return my other ones, and he said he would personally drive to the Dublin REI to pick up the only pair of bindings that would work for my skis and give me a discount since Id be spending more on them.In the end, I got my skis the day before I left for my trip and it all worked out great! Ive now skiied with the new bindings/skis at least 6 times and they have been perfect. Thank you so much for the great service Fremont REI!

Very crowded that day buy I was amazed how calm and helpful the staff was when I was one of at least eight people who were having trouble selecting the correct shoe size. One employee in particular, Quentin, was handling seven to eight people all on their own. Through the whole process of grabbing and returning multiple pairs of shoes to multiple people he remained knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The fremont location might not be my closest REI but Im glad its the one I went to and Im Quentin was working that day.

I trust the bike technicians here with my steeds, and they do impeccable work. They have a good clearance section near the registers with last chance type items marked down, plenty of biking gear, a ton of bikes, bike racks, ski shop, kayak rentals, rock climbing gear and more.
