Great selection! Fast friendly service. WiFi access, in door and outdoor seating with a perfect view of Campus Martius Park. Great meeting spot on the go. If you’re looking for truly custom blend coffee, you’ve found it. Your choice ground fresh! One more reason Detroit is the place to be. Visiting or local coffee lovers are in for a treat. 5 Stars across the board.
I didnt really go through the whole variety of the menu, I just tried their house blend. But oh my, what a lovely house blend. Its smoky, sweet and a little fragrant as its ground and roasted in seconds. It was fresh and fulfilling even as a small, and at a good price for the quality. When i come to Detroit, Ill be happy to come here every lunch.
Loved the coffee here! Great place to just sit and work or catch up with friends or just people watch. The roaster is just so cool! I have never seen the green coffee beans roasted like this. To any coffee lover, this place smells like paradise! Loved hanging out here. Definitely visiting again when I am in Detroit.
What a neat place for the coffee enthusiast! you order your coffee at the counter and it shoots up through the tubes and over to the machine ready to brew! Great crema! You can also mix your own blend and roast. Really enjoyed my kombucha, orange ginger was one of the best Ive ever had! Detroit brewed! Paper straws, always a plus! Love environmental consideration 💚 IG @withlovefrommiche Follow me for Michigan eats!
I like the visual atmosphere of this coffee shop, its in a nice location for sure. But I didnt like that we were asked to leave because we didnt have masks. I have no issue wearing a mask to keep everyone safe but if you dont have them available for your customers then youre losing on quite a bit of business over like 5 cents so please please please have masks for people that way we can spend at your business! Also, friends grabbed something for me and I tried their hot cocoa and it was pretty watered down.
Really cool coffee plant. You can watch the beans rushing over your head! Its in a great location and there is plenty of seating inside and outside. My daughter loved her dirty chai and i got a plain coffee but it was delish. I will definitely be coming to this location for coffee next time Im in Detroit!
This coffee shop in Detroit is amazing. The coffee is the star. Great espresso drinks. Just amazing regular coffee with nice crema. And the smell of roasting coffee is a bonus. Do try the amazing locally made kombucha. The setup to get fresh beans to the machines is pretty cool as well.
Very trendy, cool little coffee place right in the center of the D. Very positive experience with the barista. Don’t be intimidated by any long line, things move pretty quick. Pay attention to the sweet bean machine in the center, when you order whatever blend you want, it’ll shoot the beans to the counter for your coffee through a tubing system.
Roasting Plant is one of my favorite places to go in Detroit. Every year during my visit I try something new. The unique vacuum delivery coffee bean delivery system they have as the main attraction (other than the great drinks) is mesmerising and beautiful. This year I got a dirty chai and it was great. Roasting Plant never fails to deliver a unique and delicious experience.
This place is truly cool. It lets you watch the coffee you desire shoot up from a silo behind you upon ordering and travel to roasters/extractors that make scientifically prepare your coffee just like that. There is a really cool variety of coffee being served so it is easy to find what you want. It is a little more expensive but it really is the experience and incredible aromas that you are paying for.
Ive been going there since they opened their doors. Great coffee, good staff, and interesting vacuum contraption. Today the coffee was still good, but the staff was not. When youre paying $5 for a coffee the staff should make you feel welcome and important to them. They shouldnt seem interested and make you feel like an annoyance. In my opinion, when youre in the service industry you need a good product with great service. Unfortunately, I didnt get that today.
Good coffee, stopped by here for my 2nd time on Friday . I was hoping the service would be better.Bad customer service, the customers support the business. There is never a reason to be rude, argue or to be irritated by a paying customer. ESPECIALLY, IF YOUR A WORKER AND NOT THE OWNER.
If you love coffee, this is definitely the place to go. Ive had Roasting plant on my list of places to visit for a long time and finally made it in. The smell of the coffee beans as you you enter is nothing short of heavenly. Such an awesome place. The prices could be considered to be on the higher side, but, to me it is well worth it for quality coffee. Plus its very interesting on the inside as well.
Ever since I tried this place years ago as a freshman at CCS - I had fallen in love. Every. Single. Cup. Is. FRESH. You most definitely get what you pay for. Not only is the coffee amazing, but their baked goods AND kombucha are too. PLUS I have not once had a bad visit, even when they’re busy as heck - I am always greeted by some of the loveliest people. I miss getting coffee from there. You should definitely try.
I don’t know what happened, but I was surprised how bad the coffee was despite the really good reviews. My husband & I are really big on good coffee. His coffee tasted burnt, I couldn’t even take a second sip after trying it. I had a vanilla latte. I rarely get coffee with syrup, but this just tasted like Nescafé or something. The foam was also airy and not smooth. I would have given it a single star but extra star for friendly customer service, at least.
Best coffee. Always great service. A wonderfully modern atmosphere where you can watch the beans go from green to roasted. Some rare coffees from around the world. Go for the best they have. It’s less than $5 for some of the best coffee you can try. Also free samples of any brew so you can try it before you buy it.
We visited this shop while in Detroit for the day. The pictures made it seem like a cool vibe, but I could never imagine working inside the shop as the beans make so much noise going through the tubes. Also, the coffee is a little more on the expensive side, but I suppose it was premium coffee so that may justify it for coffee aficionados.
After drinking my first cup of coffee at the Roasting plant I realized that I had just finished the best cup of coffee in my life. Five stars for the best coffee house in Downtown Detroit. You have to taste the coffee yourself to understand what I am talking about. Also the sales associates always smile and are very courteous and friendly. The store is clean and neat. Great atmosphere and view in the heart of Downtown Detroit. Amazing to watch how the coffee is made; this is definitely a 5 star coffee house.Carl M
I am always glad that I wait until my second or third visit to a place before rating it - I had a great experience last time I went. I tried the Iced D Blend which is half regular and half decaff coffee. I love the cream taps they have at the condiments table. It is a fun place with a unique display and dispensing system of their coffee. Check it out!
Im not a coffee drinker, but I do like the smell of roasting coffee so this place smells great! They have a nice selection of tea, and they also make excellent chai and hot chocolate. Good baked goods, too! However, it is very noisy inside, since they grind each cup of coffee to order and theres glass everywhere.
This place is ok. I like how they have outlets every few feet. The coffee is okay and the staff member that served me wasnt friendly at all. She set down a drink and when I asked if it was the drink I ordered she wouldnt respond. It was kind of like trying to communicate with a cyborg with narrowly defined programming. Theres alot of coffee shops in Detroit so Ill try another one next time.
Awesome coffee and ideal location for a visitor to Detroit or someone just in downtown for the day. I havent tried all of their roasts so I cant say that they are all good, but their unique brewing system makes it easy to dry a lot of different types of coffee. They even offered me a sample when I couldnt decide between two. Great service!
Ive been to both roasting plant locations in London, UK and here in Detroit. The designs are virtually the same and the selection of coffee beans is really good for both to try in shop and for taking home. All beans are roasted on site and are super fresh for use at home.
If you love coffee then dont come here!!! Great disguise for terrible coffee.... truly terrible... its served WAY too hot and even with an extra shot the espresso is almost unnoticeable...... foam is really watery and airy..... youll have better luck with vending machine coffee.....sad and its 7$ by the way this is the first time I have ever wrote a review it that means anything
If you are in downtown Detroit, this is a great place to grab a cup of coffee. (its better than Starbucks!) The selection of coffee is awesome. They also have cookies and other quick snacks you can grab if you need a little something. The employees are pretty cool and they now sell a locally-produced kombucha which is awesome!
The coffee here is terrible. It super watery with little flavor. If If you want a good drink here its almost $7 which is ridiculous. I was at least hoping that the foam would be super frothy and creamy but its not. If you want to add any flavor to your drink its almost another dollar which would bring it to almost $8. One latte is the same price as a Chipotle burrito....no thanks.
A solid cup of coffee - but mind the noise. If youre looking for a fun Detroit experience while visiting downtown, visit Roasting Plant. The coffee is great, they have quite a few bean choices, and their service is excellent. Your coffee beans will shoot across the ceiling when you get an espresso drink, but please be mindful of the noise for your kids. It gets up there; around 80-90 decibels. During summer months, they have outside seating.
As for a specialty coffee shop they have such an awesome concept! With a ton of potential, the staff seemed friendly but rushed. It wasn’t a peak time we visited but yet the staff wasn’t overly personable. If your into a Starbucks style coffee and are in the area this place can fulfill your coffee needs👍🏼👍🏼
This is my goto coffee place in downtown Detroit. They roast their coffee fresh. They even have green coffee beans if you want to home roast. So many different single origin coffees to enjoy including Jamaica Blue Mountain which is like 75+ per pound so enjoy that cup! Croissants were wonderful too. Service has always been congenial and efficient. Wish there was one in the burbs but maybe its good there isnt as I would be coffee poor!
I never give 5stars on my reviews unless ive had multiple visits. i went there about 630am for coffee. And a chocolate croissant im very well pleased the croissant had just came out of the oven (it was kinda messy after eating but very fresh n good) i had the house roast i believe and omg starbucks who? Where? Lol but no seriously i recommend a morning here owe the customer service from the worker was amazing she gave me some insite on some of the different beans i was highly impressed it was clean.. If service and the atmosphere is like this all day then they deserve 5stars but only time will tell 🤗
The coffee is delicious and made properly every time (correct brew temperature and appropriate grind for espresso, cold brew, pressed, ect...) which is basically unheard of in the Detroit Metropolitan/Suburban area. Im shocked that anyone would ever go to the Starbucks across the street but for some reason that boggles my mind people do. Great work Roasting Plant! Youve been my favorite coffee house for 5 years and running! Wishing I had a cup right now.
Fun place to go get coffee downtown, but poor quality beans. I went in to get a pound of green coffee beans to roast at home. I chose the Bali Blue Moon. When I got them home and inspected the quality just before throwing them in my toaster, I found the beans to be highly inconsistent in size and quality. Several were pitted or looked like they were damaged by bugs.
This place features plenty of varieties of coffees from all over the world. When you first walk into the shop, youll notice a section in the very center consisting of several tubes of coffee beans. Go the counter, give them your order, and watch the beans travel through the tubes in the center to machines - Its no magic show, but still a little entertaining. The Ethiopian blend has a great flavor, which is what Ill usually order here. Oh and I should mention: It WILL wake you up ;)
Great coffee, really everything is fine with this place except the environment - for some god awful reason, they play super loud music. Literally to the point when you use a decibel meter app, it says it is at the level that causes hearing damage at prolonged exposure. So, its like being at a club at 1am Saturday, but its 9am on a Wednesday. I come here a lot, and usually wish I could stay and relax, maybe grab something to eat, but I need to do work, or make a call, and you cant do that here.
Kitschy coffee automated by machines. A high end Starbucks. Neat to see if youve never been, but no need to go more than once. The coffee is ok, but the coffee machine process is akin to an upscale vending machine. The coffee comes out with a ton of oxygen injected, which seems to remove the best part of a cup, the aroma.I wish they had another brew method, but thats saved for us connoisseurs elsewhere. If you need a quick cup of Joe and want to avoid the red solo cup of Starbucks, or if you want to be awed by a maze of coffee bean vacuum tubes come here.If you prefer a perfect 22-24 second pull espresso, skimming the crema, a pour over, or a French press look elsewhere.SummaryStaff is nice.Place is cleanAtmosphere is a bit sterile, but comfortable with nice corner views.Coffee is good, but not exceptional.Service is fast.
The staff and the atmosphere are fun, but as far as the actual coffee. It is terrible. I order a flash brew and a black coffee from two different origins and did not drink more than one sip from either. My friend tried both and felt the same. I needed to get the taste out of my mouth, so I ordered an ice chai. That was just as bad.
This place is so cool! Not only is it right off the square, but they have these chutes that transport the coffeepot the front. Its really unique and really good. The coffee is really good. I mean they roast it themselves (which you can see at the front happening) Get a coffee and go see the Spirit of Detroit.
Coffee was great, the place is cool, the lemon donuts were awful. Not just the taste, but the age of said donut was in question. Maybe they were old. Shame on them for charging a fortune, and not checking the quality. Any place with good donuts would never have that problem, since the employees would eat them before they went bad, or theyd give them away. Sadly, I wont ever be buying food from them until I have some sort of proof theyve fixed the problem. Until then, Ill use their donut for a hockey puck.
I actually changed my 5 star rating, because I agree with Paul. I also had been going there since their doors opened, and I thought I had built a pretty good rapport with the staff. After moving from the area I wasnt going as often as I used to , but when I was in the area I would stop by. I started to notice that one of the staff members would only come from the back, after I had been waited on. Im sure they have cameras in back so they can see whos out there, and I just got the feeling that I was being avoided, so I felt like if that person needed to go to that extent to avoid me, maybe I should spend my money somewhere else.
Some of the best chai tea Ive ever had. Only problem is I dont get the same taste every time (although there are a couple of baristas that get it right every time. Defiantly will still go and the coffee smells magnificent. I dont drink it but my team members definitely wont pass up a chance to get some.
Cool concept, poor execution. The coffee was just OK. For a place so focused on high-end coffee, including selling green beans, which Ive never seen in a retail coffee shop before, the baristas seemed to know very little about the coffee. Nothing about how things worked there was clear, either.
Hands down the most excellent and innovative cup of coffee Ive ever had. Beans are roasted right before your eyes in the store as needed (10-12 min process) and sent to plexiglass silos; after the cashier enters your order the appropriate beans are then sent through overhead pneumatic tubes to coffee makers where they are ground and brewed and dispensed directly into your cup. Fascinating!
I have been going here for a while, making the trip out to Detroit after they had closed the location closer to me. Well, I was there Sunday with my brother and I had the worst experience with the barista. First my coffee tasted of water so I asked her to fix it and she caught the WORST ATTITUDE with me. Kept spitting out that I had asked that the coffee taste more of coffee and less hazelnut. It tasted of water. Anyway the barista was just nasty with me and it would take up a whole page to describe the DISRESPECT. She was not helpful and would not budge on any solution so I just asked for my money back and even that I had to fight her on. I had no way to see if she had returned my money and after her terrible service she expected me to take her word for it. I wasnt born yesterday. Anyway I finally had management work it out with me. I cant believe the how this all escalated. Needless to say I am never coming back and I do not reccomend this place to anyone.
Pricy, but they have a lot of really nice varieties. Definitely a good place for a coffee nut like myself. Nice location located right on the other side of the street from Campus Martius. One of my favorite things about it is the whole vacuum tube system they have to move the beans around is so fun to watch. Maybe Im just a child, but it is really cool.
If youre a coffee purist, this probably isnt going to be your regular spot. Their microbrew style doesnt even get close to matching a patiently executed pour-over. Their top bean offers barely any notes, Im surprisingly disappointed given the whole bean management system theyve got - which is a cool enough reason to come here regardless at least once. Youve probably never seen anything quite like it.
Starbucks has moved in across the street. I tried Roasting Plant again, and it has the superior flavor and superior staff, but as much as Id love to support them, their large black coffee is much smaller and 47% more expensive than Starbucks. Due to the price and being satisfied with Starbucks quality, I must return to Starbucks. I think Roasting Plant is doing alright, besides.
Pretty decent coffee place, breaks down the aspects of coffee and builds it back up again. Drinks very from their regular house blend to Jamaican peaberry. Way too loud though, and the current acting manager treats her employees like crud. Ive heard reports of the employees receiving short term hearing loss because of how loud the Javabot is. Id recommend getting in and out of the store as quickly as possible simply due to the noise. Its impossible to exist in there also due to the size of the store, so small, only compounded again by employees yelling and the javabot screaming loud.
Excellent Matcha green tea powder, Excellent varieties of World Domestic coffe beans freshly brewed w assorted treats & foods to slack the hunger and quench the thirsts.....great seating to read, people watch or outside seating for the hardy.......my opinion, one of the best coffeehouses in downtown area, sandwiches are great too!
Nope. Its not where youll get beef for your sandwich, nor a chicken for dinner. Its a coffee shop! What sets Roasting plant apart from the plethora of other coffee shops, is, that it has its own very high techy looking coffee factory right in the shop. Well, maybe not exactly a coffee factory, more like a bunch of clear plastic tubular bins containing coffee, connected to various tubes and gizmos allowing customers to grind and combine various blends of coffee. Certainly, Roasting Plant is not original in offering a wide range of flavors, yet, therein lies a problem: what kind of cup of joe should you whip up? I played it safe,. though, the folks I was with, were more adventurous, and, quite frankly, their results were pretty disastrous. So. Like operating any heavy machinery, make sure you know what youre doing first, because I dont think Roasting Plant offers refunds on a customer created revolting cup of coffee.

2021-11-18Arrived at 5:15pm on a Thursday, to try the coffee. Was happy to come in because the hours stated that they closed at 7pm. I ordered a large mint mocha coffee, for almost 8$. It tasted nothing like mint. Sat down and before I knew it, the two other customers and I were being asked to leave. The two employees stated that they were too short staffed to stay open even though there wasnt much business and Im sure they could have handled staying open. If you plan on coming to get some coffee just beware that you might get booted out after 5pm. There are seats in the lobby. Wont be coming by again.

2022-06-21All the good stuff is crazy expensive and all the inexpensive stuff is bad. If youre looking to shell out some serious coin for a bag, this is a good spot to do it. The ceiling bean vacuum system is a cute novelty; but when Im looking for a good and reasonably priced cup of coffee, I look elsewhere.

2022-02-25Our coffees were delicious. Love the concept of picking which beans your drink is made out of, and it was cool to watch the beans fly through the tubes. Parking was difficult. But I would come back sometime.

2022-07-09I wanted to try a local spot and was sorely disappointed. There were 3 people behind the counter, no one looked at us nor did they ask if we needed any help. When it became apparent that no one wanted to help us we left. Just a mom and her two daughters out exploring the beauties of downtown looking for hot cup of coffee. Too bad we had to go elsewhere.

2018-12-21Looking for a great spot on downtown Detroit? You’ve found it. Roasting plant offers a wide variety of drinks with fresh coffee. Coffee is roasted on site. Grab a cup and watch as coffee beans are roasted into the delicate goodness we so often enjoy. Coffee is very smooth and tastes great.
