Comment: A few weekends ago I was faced with a difficult circumstance due to it being difficult to rent equipment - I am a student building my book for eventual portfolio review and close to the end of my program at NYFA. My biggest grievance and struggle with my experience there thusfar.Scott helped me so much in securing the 24-70 mm lens being exchanged for the 14 mm I bought about a week prior. He helped through the entire process and with a tiny bit a stress, and a winning outcome I feel so happy that I now don’t have to rely on renting this lens and can truly explore and create. Comment: Super low ball offers on used gear. I seriously sold my gear for double what these guys were offering me a day later. Their offer was quite frankly insulting, and cited demand. When you have a almost new 70-200 2.8 lens that is still a daily lens and are told maybe $400, it definitely is comical. As several others have mentioned, whoever is in charge of buying the gear is rude and condescending, explaining to me why my gear is worth nothing and encouraged me to go on ebay. You guys should not offer to buy gear if you plan on low balling people.

You can compare products and I think they give you a great deal on lighting and cameras. The price they give you is 50% below whatever is listed on eBay for your gear.They will not match buy back price from Adorama, B&H, Keh or mpbI really want to support the local business, but the staff here is poorly train in customer service. Comment: I was referred to Samy’s by a friend. I needed to have 2 images (one 4.4 meg) enlarged and printed onto poster sized media. Before going to the store I called their main number and was courteously transferred to the correct department, which was Service Bureau. That department extension was courteously answered by Roger who said I could bring the files in on my iPhone. I drove there and went upstairs to the right place. Roger was able to have me air drop the files to his workstation. Payment was made at the time of the order. Roger mentioned the work might not be ready by Friday (this was Wednesday) but that I could come on Monday since their team is not open Saturday. When I mentioned that I would be busy Monday he stated that the prints could be ready sooner. In fact they were ready by close of business and I picked up Thursday. To my eye the posters were beautiful. I did not compare their price with others. The posters also are on archival media so they won’t fade. I was happy for the service and was treated very courteously. Thank you

Comment: We were looking for lenses for our brand-new camera, and Brandon was super helpful and friendly to us. Took his time to explain things for us (beginners in photography and foreigners), and we ended up with a good deal (there was a second hand lenses for nearly half the price and of course we took it 😄). We finished our purchase with sd card, extra protection for the camera and very happy for the amazing pictures to come! Whenever we are back in the US and we need camera things, we will visit Samy’s!

Comment: I went there to see if my camera was fixable & had some questions about the camera. The guy was very arrogant & acted like I didn’t know what I was talking about. That’s why I was there in the first place to ask questions. He treated me like I was stupid. I’m not sure if he’s having a bad day. I stated i want this one fixed for sentimemtal values without regards of cost or the cost for a uses one. He kept insisting i buy another camera, at the end he flat out stated he wouldnt fix it because i had to buy another second hand second hand camera instead.

Comment: 15% restocking fee, no exceptions. I few days ago, I purchased an item that I ended up not needing. The item was brand new, the box was never opened. I went to the shop with the intention of exchanging the item for a more expensive lens. I was told there were no exceptions to the restocking fee because all cameras were registered by Samy’s with the manufacturer. This answer seems unlikely to me - someone is registering an item without knowing who the owner is? The purchase could be for work, a gift, or any other use. I understand the hassle of taking in returned items but this policy seems shortsighted. Back to Amazon.

Comment: So this story starts with a foul up. A little error on a corrupted file which meant my print didnt get printed. I walk in to ask whats going on, show them I got billed, but never got an order number. For this sub 10 dollar issue, three employees spent 15 minutes sorting out this issue. Followed up the next day, with a solution, that didnt include me going back in, and then printed my photo within moments of reordering. You would have thought I was the most important client they had, and it was a 9 dollar and change print. Shout out to Chris and Mary for really taking it on, and doing me right. How you do the small things is how you do everything.

Wouldn’t accept my $8 return on bamboo tongs I never used because there was “no way they could sell them” without a clear plastic bag inside the packaging.If you see these tongs on the shelf, throw them away. Because there’s no way they should be able to sell those. It’s dirty, filthy, unusable product.Edit to response: I will go back to your store for life if you do a chemical test and it shows up positive for anything other than bamboo and veneer.

I was assisted by an employee who seemed more interested in chatting with their colleagues in Spanish, a language I dont understand because Im from Scandinavia. Additionally, when I showed him a camera I purchased on Amazon and expressed dissatisfaction, I wanted to test some other options. Instead, he told me three times that if I wasnt satisfied with that camera, there was something wrong with me. Not in a sarcastic way. Comment: I placed a special order for an item that Samys doesnt regularly stock. I got an email stating that it was in store ready for pickup, but when I went in it wasnt there due to a mixup at the warehouse. I left frustrated knowing that Id have to lose time to going back again to pick up my stuff. Samys called me a couple of hours later, recognized their mistake, and delivered the order to my studio in North Hollywood less than 4 hours later. Mistakes are going to happen from time to time, but how they are dealt with is what matters. Richie at the Fairfax location gave a masterclass in how to resolve this issue. I wish more companies were like this. The order total was only $180 too, so it wasnt like they were losing a whale of a customer over this. It was refreshing to see a company care so much about making things right! Ill be back for sure.

I keep on trying to come do in person shopping but after standing around for 5+ minute where 3 different sales people without customers didn’t acknowledge my existence, let alone help me, I had to bounce. Samy’s has always had a mix of snobby and helpful salespeople but unfortunately this experience has me really turned off. With so many other ways to purchase camera gear at competitive pricing it’s hard to justify coming into this Fairfax location.

Comment: No one offers to help you here, when you enter, dont bother roaming the store just resort to get in line to get assistance from the already busy cashiers. The cashiers are busy ringing people up and doing all the heavy lifting providing outstanding in person customer service and answering phone calls, yet the tellers for film rental items to your right as you enter or the guy trying to look busy with a screw driver at the front desk, or the bored man at the end with the refrigerated professional film are just taking up space. Its a drag to feel like youre begging to spend your money when people who are too self absorbed in their conversation, or boredom are unable to hear someone ask to pardon the interruption but youd like some help. The two cashiers here probably deserve raises. If you must come to this location for 1st floor service, just get in line, dont expect the other staff to want to assist. I really miss the Culver location and Pasadena is too far for me. Ill have to find some place else to shop.

My experience at Samys camera was nothing short of exceptional. Although I had to wait for a while, the wait was well worth it.Richard, the repair technician, was a joy to work with. He had a great sense of humor and a calming energy. He took the time to do a full inspection of my camera and treated it as if it were a person. He explained to me the weaknesses of my camera and how he was going to fix it. After the repair, he advised me on purchasing new lenses to get the most out of my camera.I was really impressed with the service that I received at Samys camera. The free inspection and repair service alone convinced me to always bring my camera here for any camera-related issues that I may have. This particular location is HUGE and most likely has anything and everything you are looking for and more. One of the best parts of this location is their huge selection of paper backdrops, which are difficult to find online without paying a ton of money for shipping. Awesome place with awesome people, who needs more than that?Update: Dec 30th 2022Another great experience at Samys. While Im not a huge customer for photo and video due to their markups, there isnt a better place to pick up things that are annoying to ship like sandbags. Picked up 10, high quality 25lb sandbags for a fraction more than what it would cost + effort of filling my own Amazon bags. I told the associate I was interested in 10 bags and he got them all ready on a cart for me and held them for me for around an hour while my friend and I browsed the other levels. The fourth floor opening up to Come Pros. Love that they have Aputure Lights on display and out for folks go play with. It was awesome to see the Aputure 1200d in action on the floor. Makes me want one though my budget says otherwise 😜

Comment: I went to Samys on Fairfax because of its reputation and popularity. They have lots of things in stock and I found what I was looking for, however, the customer service was really terrible. Im a filmmaker by trade; photography had been a hobby of mine on and off and I am just rediscovering it again with a new micro 4/3 camera that I bought this year, so yes, I certainly appeared a bit uncertain and inexperienced about what I needed when I came to Samys to buy additional equipment for my camera. On both days I went to the store, I was not given any advice at all, as if they only wanted to deal with experienced customers to have a decent photography chat with. Anyone whos truly enthusiastic about photography would want to teach the next generation, but maybe they need to focus more on quick sales than actually making a new customer familiar with the material who would definitely then want to return and become an experienced customer. I was given what I asked for and was instantly brought to the checkout. No word or recommendation, or question about what camera I was using. I felt awkward and uncomfortable, like I wasnt welcome. Not sure if I would want to return, maybe with a bit more experience, to fit into the club.

The store was jam-packed, but Mary was super patient and even gave me some shooting tips! I then headed upstairs for my prints and was helped by Ben Zimmerman! The model and its parts are long out of print so we assumed it to be probably junk. The Sam’s camera repair man inspected it on the spot, tested a few things, and figured out our issue in 5 minutes or less while we waited. Magic! The camera is now working excellently, and he didn’t charge us a penny. Comment: Ive been a long standing customer of Samys and this experience was so frustrating I decided to write a review, This is the first review ive ever written, thats how frustrating this is. November 29th I placed a large order of film online and usually get It with no problem but this time I only got a portion of my order, 10 out of 25 rolls. I didnt think it was a big deal as I usually get the full order shipped at different times due to backorders.Almost a month later I figure it would be best to call and find out what happened as none of my 5+ emails have been answered requesting assistance to my problem. I find out over the phone with no email or explanation prior to calling that the film order was cut because of high demand.Now the issue is that the price has increased since I purchased the film, and not only that I placed an order on December 7th as well ordering 15 rolls of the same film stock. Their original reason was they limited the orders to 10 rolls per order from my November 29th order and now its 5, but on December 7th I was able to order 15 rolls. Makes no sense and the customer service manager has been less than helpful.Long story short, if you want good customer service dont go to Samys. Ill be taking my business to B&H. I would have at least appreciated a curtesy email explaining what was going on, I dont that thats unreasonable.

I understand that its used, but I specifically remember that it was supposed to as per the included with this item section of the ad. I looked through all my conformations and shipping and receipts and it ALWAYS said used or pre-owned. Anyway, he kept on arguing with me until I just finally had enough and hung up. Maybe its my fault for not reading the fine print, but for the cost of sending me a few lens caps (which Im sure they probably have thousands of extras just lying around) they couldve solved my very simple issue and I would be writing a very different review.UPDATE: I was contacted later by the company, who gave me the option of returning the lens or crediting my account back $20 for the lens caps.

When we tried to pick it up, the man took 30 minutes to sit on his phone and fix a payment issue (a personal matter) before finally getting up to look for it. They also tried to return it to me with parts missing. One of the only spots in town that fixes Hasselblad cameras, but definitely not the quick fix spot. Lame.

He was really patient with me and took the time to explain everything to me and make suggestions. Everything I got was like new. I am looking forward to adding more lenses, a tripod and maybe a backup camera to my equipment in the new future and will definitely be working with Ian again. Comment: I really like this place, but, as a Pentax shooter I cant say I quite love it since their selection of Pentax gear is rather limited. They do carry a great selection of Canon, Nikon, Sony, Hasselblad, Leica and other camera brands. They also carry an assortment of lighting equipment, tripods, monopods, video equipment, printers and much more. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Some of their employees have worked there for over 40 years! By the way, this is a four story building, and it is chock full of goodies. They have plenty of parking as well, and nice restrooms. There was also a huge mural on the outside wall when I visited.

Comment: Sammys camera is a really great place to got to for all types of camera needs. I personally have an old Canon ae1 and they can always help point me in the right direction with my questions. They have almost every tool a photographer might need, their film processing service is very good and usually pretty quick and simple, however, not the cheapest. The only problem I really have with them is that they, when I last went in, were not able to fix my camera(they said they didnt do it and refered me to a different company), but other than that, all purchases I have made with them have left me feeling good about the quality of the product as well as not feeling as though I had killed my wallet.

I spent about almost two hours inside of Samys with not so good customer service from two other workers one (she wearing glasses) acted like she was busy when she was just standing there the other guy was just really rude. I was standing there literally staring at the tripods and SCOTT stopped me & asked if I needed assistance! I explained to him exactly what I wanted and needed to start filming on my Olympus E-PL8. Where the other associate told me No & was kind of rude with it! I was about to walk out the store disappointed thinking that it couldnt be done but Scott was patient with me and helped me found the right products for me! I literally was about to cry I was so happy because he helped me so much even open up an account where the other times I came in no one ever even took the time to open up an account for me which blew my mind. So if you ever go to the 3floor of Samys please ask for Scott you wont be sorry! Thanks Scott your the best I will be sure to only shop with him for now on. Comment: I rented from Samys yesterday and immediately realized why I stopped coming to this location.The customer service is trash and the lack of urgency is consistent throughout the shop if you can call it that.First of all the entire rental staff was sick....wash you hands gents.Second I rented a tripod....1 tripod that took 30 minutes to come down and it was a slow day.I took my 30 mins to shop around the store.I needed a simple tool kit with flat heads and Phillips head set....couldnt find it and no one knew where to direct me.I needed a small hd 502 monitor hood....couldnt find it, floor 3 said it was on 4. Floor 4 said it was on 3....do any of you know where things actually are?Ive rented from Adorama, Wooden Nickel, hell even Sharegrid is a better option then this location.I dont know if being young and African American has anything to do with the lack of respect but Ive spent thousands......THOOOOU$$$ANDS of dollars at Samys locations in general and you all need to do better!

Comment: Samys is legendary as THE place to go in Los Angeles for all things photographic.My Canon SX170 got dropped when I was returning it to its (well-padded but undersize) case, damaging the zoom and shutter mechanisms and rendering it unusable.I was dreading the repair bill or having to buy a replacement, but to my surprise a guy in the service department fiddled with it and got it back in working order in 5 minutes! He didnt even open the case, just tinkering with the lens and working his mojo-magic on it. AND didnt charge for the service!From there, I went straight upstairs and bought a new (larger) camera case to ensure there would be no repeat of the incident - AND the case was on sale!Woo-Hoo!

The staff is obviously a group of burnouts, nobody is friendly and smiling and happy to help you with enthusiasm. Be prepared to know exactly what you want and wait in a longer than usual line to checkout. This place does rent gear but they REQUIRE a SECURITY DEPOSIT EQUAL TO THE RETAIL PRICE OF THE ITEM YOU ARE RENTING. No joke. You might as well buy one from a big box store and return it if heaven forbid something accidental were to happen. And heaven forbid you not be aware of this deposit policy, because if your surprised at check out, the cashier wont be friendly about it. Customer service people!!!!

And I can buy another $1000,000 for the next 10 years or less if their employees were not mean at me. I go to the GM Ray and complain about it. The 3rd Floor manager Fernando. Fernando does a TERRIBLE JOB Fernando step away while I was talking to him, yell at me for taking a bag of fliers - I explain to him that it is more than 20 years that I pick up fliers for my students- after few minutes he apologized - 3 months after he step away again while Im talking to him . This is means missing of education and disrespectful attitude. I dont want to come in a place where Im coursed and disrespect. Last week oct 30, 2017 I complain with Ray about the manager Fernando attitude, because he step away while I was talking to him. It is 20 years that I come in this store, I ask the price for the camera to the seller person - and a better price to Walter, George green, Sochi, etcI look at Samys business and ask:- How Long can this last? But you pay a premium for the convenience.They also have a broad selection of professional gear for rent.Staff can be very hit or miss. Comment: I had a very specific problem, mounting my Sennheiser directional mic to the Beastgrip, a structure that you can attach a mobile phone to. The staff, Francisco, was extremely helpful coming up with innovative solutions. The resulting mount consisted of a screw, a screw adaptor, and a fastening device, all working together to form an extremely stable mount for the mic. Francisco said that he appreciated the challenge, especially since it ended with a very clever solution. Throughout the experience, which lasted over half an hour, F was extremely patient and excited by the challenge. I highly recommend Sammys as a great source of camera and video equipment and accessories at a very competitive price compared to other retailers.Service was exceptional.

Comment: Walt the General Manager is a jackass. He told me never to come to his store again. Heres what I caught them in the act of doing. If you shoot film they will place chromatic aberrations in your scans, and tell you that if frequently occurs with film negative. Then they will try to talk you into buying a $3500 digital camera and tell you the the built in camera processor will remove the chromatic aberrations. I was previously talking to a person at their corporate office and Walt said that they did not have a corporate office. Google it for yourself Walt you have a corporate office. When I asked Walt to to look at the negative with a loop and see it there was any green because this is an indication of chromatic Aberration. I could believe my ears the General Manager told me that he did not know anything about film. Then he said that he would redo my scans personally. Wait a moment, but you just said that you do not know anything about film. They staff only want their commissions, they are like used car sales men, and dirty mechanics. I USED THE EXACT SAME CAMERA EQUIPMENT LAST YEAR AND WENT TO A DIFFERENT LAB AND NEVER HAD ANY CHROMATIC ABERRATIONS, AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERY TIME I GO HERE I HAVE CHROMATIC ABERRATIONS. THEY TRY TO TELL YOU IT THE LENS AND TRY TO TALK YOU INTO BUYING A $5000 ZEISS LENS TO PUT ON A $3500 DIGITAL CAMERA. I caught them in the act and that is why they no longer want me at their store. The person I talked with at their corporate office I told him that I have a collapsed femoral head and it causes me severe pain, and he said I could mail the negative to him and he would forward the negative to the Fairfax location for processing. When I told Walt that I only wanted to pay for the negative processing and I would like to have him mail me the negatives he told me I had to come there and pick them up. WALT HAS NO HEART AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT DISABLED PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment: I live in Hawaii, and my parents live in California. I had chosen the light and camera I wanted for my underwater photography, and then I set to trying to figure out if it was possible to mount the things together. I tried everything/every place available where I live, and exhaustively searched online for a way to make it work. Near when I was about to give up, my parents went in to this Samys Camera location and talked to Mike. I was able to talk to him over the phone, and he got the whole thing set up for me, and quickly. My parents brought in the light and camera, and Mike put the whole thing together and they shipped it out to me. Its perfect, and he was officially the only person I could find who could help me, like anywhere. Thanks!

Comment: I really enjoyed my experience here. I was a little nervous and intimidated at first l, because Im as amateur as it gets and Im really new to all of the stuff camera related. Its huge store, almost a department store, so its easy to get a little overwhelmed. But everyone here was really nice and helpful and I was pleasantly surprised. I expected everyone to have really uptight and snooty attitudes, particularly towards me because I just strolled in off the street, clueless as ever, but when I asked for advice and help on stuff, everyone was more than helpful. Justin was very nice and really talked to me about the kinds of tripods and I left assured that the one I chose was great for what I paid. Another gentleman whos name I did not catch helped me pick a bag.Camera gear is expensive, so naturally I wouldve like to NOT have spent nearly $100 on a bag alone, but the service here made me feel confident and happy with my purchases.

Comment: I am not sure what all the bad reviews are about. I had a great salesman helping me. He waited 12min on the phone before giving up on trying to solve my fraud-lock on my accounts. I was visiting from Sweden. I was still able to purchase my lens and I had a positive experience. Maybe they cleaned out the un-friendly people?

Comment: I stopped in last month for a last minute Christmas present. Mike D. heeled me out to find something according to my picky requirements. I surprised my friend before the holidays with a new Canon hoping that theyd use it during Christmas family time. The photos are spectacular and their feelings about the camera were only positive. This store gets a bad wrap pretty often, but my experience has only been great.

Comment: Heres something to bear in mind when youre reading the negative reviews of this store: it just may have been someone (employee or customer) having a bad day rather than some kind of conspiracy on the part of Samys employees to ridicule their customers. I stopped by there earlier today to buy a video monopod. Yes, the stores layout can be a bit overwhelming. But in the first 60 seconds, I had at least two employees politely offer to point me in the direction of the department I was looking for. The gentleman who fielded my inquiry about the monopod I wanted (which wasnt on the shelf) cheerfully retrieved it from a back room and handled my transaction professionally and without the slightest hint of contempt. Then I went to the 4th floor, and spoke with a gentleman named Keith, who for 10 minutes very patiently and knowledgeably answered my extremely basic questions about filtering systems. So, all in all, a very pleasant experience. Of course, your mileage may vary. But I wouldnt hesitate to return.

Comment: The staff there really needs training regarding customer service (the Fairfax location). I like the great selection of products that the store offers, even though theyre expensive, but every time I go there I have a negative experience with someone being rude. All I ask if for the staff to be more polite and willing to help. The only person that I love there is the security man at the door. Hes so nice, always says hi and gives you a smile. If the rest of the people working there were like this man, the store would be wonderful.

Comment: I worked as a camera assistant for years and worked with the Fairfax location on a regular basis - and admittedly in the past was alway considered The Industry Standard. Over the past year I have been in for my own work for purchases & rentals. If I have a question, Im made feel an idiot of the profession. Its been, every time, a terrible experience going in there. The west side location in Culver City is much more customer friendly. Fairfax needs a LOT of work in customer service (And lose the attitude - if you were professional photographers working the field, you wouldnt be working at Sammys - so get over yourselves).

Comment: I have experience working in a rental house, so admittedly Im a stickler for good customer service. There were several unfortunate instances that happened with our rental this past weekend.-For starters, they quoted us a lens they didnt actually have and then attempted to convince our PA picking up that the 35mm would be the same as a 25mm.-We had a weekend rental and asked if we might be able to pickup on Friday midday. They said it was ok, but failed to inform us theyd be charging us for two days! We definitely got burned, financially.-Sammys didnt have our paperwork from our previous rental (just one month earlier) on file, so we had to complete the paperwork again.-Despite our having insurance, they still charge the amount of our deductible plus our rental upfront (a practice that most rental houses dont do.)At the end of the day, theres just too many great rental houses in LA to go to Sammys. I wouldnt go as far as to say theyre dishonest, but definitely sneaky.Instead, Id recommend Alternative Rentals or Abel Cine as places with great service, and avoid Sammys.

Comment: Had to pick up a UV lens for my dads wife before their trip the next day. The salesman was completely disinterested in helping. My dad was with me and he knew I was about to walk out of the store and had to stop me. There wasnt another store close enough and it was too late. The UV lens were twice the price they should have been and the LCD protector was a film protector instead of a hard plastic cover. Poor selection, high prices, and rude service. Never again.

Comment: Ive been going to Sammys for over 10 years. Buying and renting cameras, lenses, bags, film, prints, repairs, etc etc. I have rarely had a bad experience. I only wish that the layout was somehow more clean and efficient. But the staff is always helpful and giving with their time and knowledge. Ill keep coming back for years to come.

Comment: The store is awesome! Its big and theres lots to look at. I could probably spend half a day just looking at the cameras they sell. I just got back into photography and Ill come here at least every other weekend just to look around. They always have excellent service here and really great deals.
