A first class, all American, roadside tourist trap. I say that as a compliment! Its so much fun. My kids are in their 20s and we still stop every time we pass by. Make sure to get a picture with the bear! If you have little ones, they can play on the pirate ship out front. Its a classic.
Staff is so incredibly nice. Theres so many cute little things to look at and a huge variety of sea shells to buy. Some things are a little over priced but for a first time stop by it was great aside from being head to head with people everywhere with no AC it felt like. Woulda been nice to have a fan while standing in line to check out.
The store is huge! There are tons of different sea shells, sea shell novelties, and more. My favorite part of this store is it allows the option to pick your very own pearl oyster. You can choose to have the pearl you get set into a variety of different jewelry pieces. The pieces of jewelry range from numerous ring settings, pendant options, earrings, and even a few bracelets. If you’re lucky you might end up with a two pearls! You’re also given an estimated market value for your pearl. Definitely worth it!
We visited here yesterday. Had lots of fun checking out all they had to offer. We had fun shopping and spending money here. This morning we decided we wanted to pick up a sea shell wind chime for our uncle. We got there 10 minutes before they opened. They let me in to purchase the one item I wanted.
Nothing negative to say really. It wasn’t super friendly or awesome in any way. But it was fine. I only get there like once every 20 years so it’s just a kinda cool out of the beaten path place with fun stuff. The rocky road fudge was good. The peanut butter one had a weird taste to it. We were hours away by the time we realized that. Not horrible but just an odd taste about it.
A very fun store to stop and visit on our way up to the U.P. We always make a point of stopping here to stretch our legs, use the bathroom, and pick up a few fun little trinkets. A great selection of shells and other interesting seaside/lakeside items, from mugs and fridge magnets, to wind chimes, toys and novelty stuff. The kids love it here.
Really cool shop to visit if youre in the area. This place is huge, and has an equally huge variety of relatively cheap trinkets like keychains, clothing, picture frames, and other things you might find in a tourist shop. Most people will find something interesting and affordable to purchase. Of course, there are seemingly endless aisles of any and all types of shells you can imagine, including ones that are decorated, dyed, and cut into cross-sections. You can get quite a few of these for a bargain. What really makes this place unique is that you can pay to open an oyster of your choice, then you get to keep the pearl you find inside! My grandmother had fun doing this, then having the 2 pearls she found fashioned into a pair of earrings. There are also some ENORMOUS pieces of shipping equipment, pieces of coral, and other neat artifacts from the sea that most people cant afford, but are eye-catching and fun to inspect. The worst part of my visit BY FAR was the incredibly high temperature in the store. I dont know if they have air conditioning or not; if they do it doesnt work or wasnt running. The few ceiling fans they did have were barely moving, preventing any meaningful air circulation and leaving an almost entirely stagnant, humid atmosphere that was even hotter than the extreme heat outside. The employees were always present, friendly, and helpful, so in all Id recommend this shop to anyone. However, keep in mind that (at the time of this writing) its unbearably hot inside.
I love this place. They have a variety of unique things from home and garden to clothes, jewelry, books, toys and nick nacks. The staff is friendly and if you are into the nautical theme they have a variety of items that may interest you. I love the different types of sand castles you can purchase. To some it may be your average tourist trap but for my daughter and I, it is a must stop and we always find something unique there.
Aptly named, the assortment of saltwater seashells is astounding for a location so far from the ocean. We always stop on our way to Mackinaw City and find something shell theme of interest yearly. There are curiosities to examine as well, and a pirates play ship outside for littles to workout some of their pent up energy.
Its a nice place. Lots of trinkets and novelties. Nothing overly unique. The store is organized well. The have a candy station along with...sea shells! If you carry a firearm do not bring it here as it is prohibited by the owner, ironic given some of the things they sell. However all in all you should visit if you have not been here...visit again if you have too they get new things all the time. At the very least there are some cool photo opportunities inside, check it out!
I was excited to bring my boys here because I remember how cool it was as a kid. Well its definitely not a cool environment anymore, especially if you stop closer to closing time. They were not excited or friendly when we walked in and had a general look of disdain for children in their store. My son needed to use the bathroom quickly for more than a number 1 and the rude lady informed me that she had mopped and the bathrooms were closed for the night without any sympathy. If you do decide to visit, make sure you go early, maybe after the ladies have had some coffee, and dont bring your kids.
Really cool place to visit and check out tons of seashell items. We have been there several times and the wife picked out some oysters and got some nice pearls, she had earrings and necklace made out of them. You pick your oyster and then you can pick a setting for them. Its kind of a tourist trap but lt is still neat to spend some time checking everything out.
This place obviously hates children and money, left my ID at home, went downstate to help family move and on our way up I figured we would stop, we have always wanted to see what this little shop was about. My boys picked out some shells and novelty toys, we went to go check out and they said they require ID if you purchase with a debit card, I told her my situation and even offered to pay half cash, she asked the owner who wouldn’t even look at me and rudely said, “no store policy, don’t sell to her”. Will NEVER EVER stop again!!! I would have just put things back and paid all cas but after hearing that from the owner I refused to give them any business and will never stop again.
Been coming to this store for decades. Was always a stop on our 4th of July U.P. trip. Our big family loved to see the man eating shell. Staff has always been rude but its part of the fun of stopping there. They treat you like they want your money but dont really want to be bothered. The selection is great and prices are reasonable. Its a fun tourist trap for sure.
A must-stop-and-see shop if youre driving through anywhere near the area! Several themes within the overall nautical theme, like bears, wolves, skulls & skeletons and so much more. Even if you dont plan on buying anything its a fun walk around the entire store to see all of the unique trinkets and gifts. We always stop on our way to our back from the U.P. or Mackinac Island. Kids will love it!
I accidentally left my watch in your ladies room. Could you put it aside until I come and get it?The store was great! We bought so many items for future presents, like a neighbors birthday etc. The prices were great! There are treasures among the others items. It is a matter of taste. The shell collection has been reduced and that is a shame. We come every year! Good Fun.
Tons of seashells, of course. Also had plenty of apparel, carvings, figurines, snacks, various display items. Definitely much more extensive than I thought it would be. They have oysters in a fish tank that have pearls in them you can purchase and put on a ring. I will be coming back at least once a year
So, like many others, we stopped in on our way home after a day at Mackinac Island, I used to love this place when I was a kid and wanted to just pop in and see it again. The first thing we heard upon entering was some woman screeching at everyone that it was their last chance to use the toilet before she mops and locks it. We did not know they close at six, and the employees were rude, brusque, and clearly wanting us out. I felt bad for the families there with kids who wanted to share a fun experience and couldnt because of the aggressively angry staff. No excuse for it and I am sorry for every time I suggested anyone stop here. I am certainly sorry I stopped.
Have been here many times in the past. Definitely will never stop here again. At least in this lifetime. The young women working there were rude, snotty, loud and obnoxious. Professional attitude was out the door before it even arrived. They definitely need lessons on professionalism and friendliness.
I used to love going here on my way home from the UP when I was a kid and decided to stop with my kids. It was 5:45 and as soon as we opened the door, we were immediately told that they were mopping and to be careful. I didnt think anything about it until all the employees started looking at and following us around with the mop. I then asked what time they closed and she told me at 6:00 and continued to glare at us. My kids are 7 and 9 and like shells, so this store was amazing to them and they dont understand what closing time means... We did hurry up and left by 6:00, but my advice to the owners is to train your employees to treat guests like guests and not an inconvenience. We did not stop there to personally insult the employees, but to support them with our purchase.
I got online Monday to check on store hours and the main web site was down, saying it was under scheduled maintenance. The Google listing didnt have hours, so I checked the Facebook page. It showed it was open from 9-7 on Friday. We showed up around 4:30 on Friday and got shopping. As we were in line to check out, we noticed they were locking up. When we asked why, they said that their fall hours had just changed this week to 9-5. I let them know their web site was down, and they said it just came back up. We werent quite ready to go, but we decided to make the most of it. When I said that we should use the bathroom before we go, the sales clerk very bluntly indicated that they were all mopped up and closed for the day. When I complained about their online presence showing the wrong hours, the staff was just blunt and unapologetic, clearly wanting to rush us out as soon as possible. There was no notice given to us while my boys were carefully selecting their shells, so we didnt expect to be hurried out like that. This was a magical childhood place for me and it is just very disappointing to be treated like that. We even had another patron outside mention how impolite the customer service was. I would imagine the ownership has changed in the last 30 years, but I just feel this wasnt handled well, particularly for a family who had a two hour drive just to get there. I give it two stars because of how well the store is set up and how adorable it is overall, but the staff seemed more like they should be working in a 24-hour truck stop than at a tourist attraction. I can only imagine there were other families from out of town showing up after we left only to find that the hours had changed so abruptly. Who changes their summer hours to fall hours BEFORE Labor Day weekend? Very disappointing experience!
Tried to go there on Sat and website clearly states open on Sat until 7pm. Got there at 6pm with anxious 4 yr old son and gate was closed with sign saying 9am to 5pm. We spent money traveling across bridge and back not to mention 60 miles and an hr of our Sat wasted just to be disappointed they were closed.
Have went here for years as a kid , took our kids now our Granddaughter. The kids always love it, but this time my Granddaughter had saved her money. She spent $42 so she could buy souvenirs. $12 was in quarters and when the older lady saw it she rolled her eyes. I was ticked and said at least its not pennies. There was no Thank you, no smile. Must be terrible to hate your job that much.
Its northern Michigan fun. And make no bones about it the place is a tourist trap but what-the-heck. The store is very clean, very neat, has lots of SEA shells (nobody wants to look at a clam shell from the Great Lakes), and will keep the kiddies occupied until they grow up to video games. The place has nosh products, fair fudge, and is a nice break between the Bridge and Gaylord. I recommend it.
First time visit and the items we purchased racked up to over $100! Very hard to maneuver through the isles set up could use some rethinking ,everything was very cramped and cluttered.Cool lil selection of shells and other aquatic crafts and gifts. Nothing unique or must have.Watch yourself here some items are over priced. The employees weren’t friendly upon entering the store or at all during shopping. The employees were in a rush to close early due to one of their employees had an appointment . I was looking at the Shell night lights they have a display wall of outlets with each style lit up. As I was looking at the night lights to see how they looked lit up an employee came and shut the power off to the light up display! I thought that was very rude as I was actually looking at them...She didn’t ask if she could help or if I wanted assistance just shut it off.It didn’t seem customer service was a priority just getting us out of the store was the main objective. Wasn’t a good first impression. Check out was rushed and cashier was rude we felt so hurried that we thought we may have been over charged...
Horrible experience. First off, we were only able to grab a shell before they closed at 5. our three year old daughter had to use the restroom and noticed someone mopping and we attempted the other restroom and was stopped in our tracks by a very nasty employee telling us it was already locked and she had just mopped. We were blown away at how rude she was. We then bought our shell and the same employee whom we thought to be the manager was being rude to the other employees as well! It DOES NOT make us want to come back! We are so very disappointed at our first and only experience.
The place overall has a lot of neat items and the huge clam the price is kind of expensive but if you just go there a couple times in your life it’s fine. It also was playground outside witch is shaped like a boat that children can play in if they been in the car a little to long.
Wanted to stop by and check the place out while on our out of state road trip. We pulled in at 5:30pm when we saw an older lady rush some people out the door while locking it behind her. As we sat there for a moment wondering why (since their hours say 6pm) and what we wanted to do next, the older women pointed at us to roll down the window to inform us in the rudest and bitchest ton ever we are closed and we are leaving and were gonna lock that gate while pointing for us to turn around. Was looking forward to checking out this place but dont waste your time with that customer service and shady hours.
We stopped here a couple times a year on the back from the u p we generally by surprise boxes for my daughters and my son usually picks out a boat he likes to collect them always enjoy looking at The Oddities that are around octopus crocodile clam all the fun shells to go through and look at will keep coming back the kids also enjoy aplaying on the pirate ship outside
FULL OF RIDICULOUS ODDS N ENDS AND THE WORLDS BIGGEST MAN EATING CLAM. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT FROM A TOURIST TRAP?? plus you can harvest your own pearl from oysters or whatever for like 20$, and theyve got shark teeth and fun lawn ornaments and lots of stuffed animals and cool sea shell curtains and stuff. Its pretty neat, has a nice public restroom, and also a COOL PIRATE SHIP OUT FRONT FOR KIDS TO PLAY ON (and also small adults who want to HAVE FUN).

2022-06-07I remember going to Sea Shell City as a young person and the entire place will filled with nothing but things from the sea, lakes, oceans etc. Hence the name: Sea Shell City! I loved it! Not any more! 😠~ I had been planning on taking my granddaughters there for a very long time. I wanted them to see it because I knew they would love it as I had. What a huge disappointment! ☹😠 Now its just like all the other tourist traps. It has all the other stuff all the other tourist traps and souvenir stores have. And its just as expensive too. We will NOT be returning there! 😡🥺

2020-07-07Sea Shell City is a place that is like a family heirloom, it gets passed down, through the generations. My wife & I, have taken our children here through the years, as her parents had taken her, when she was younger. My oldest is now 20, and my youngest just turned 15, and we came back once again, to relive the memories. Sea Shell City has something for all ages, from the wonder and awe that youll witness in your little one, to even the wisest of us all, this place will leave lasting memories, that you will always treasure.

2022-06-19Kinda boring I think more people would like. I saw like 2 staff/workers I think don’t know. The clam is a shell well it does make sense I guess. The pufferfish with googley eyes (dunno how to spell it) we’re kinda creepy/odd. Reminds me of shell city from SpongeBob
