We LOVE Shirleys!! Most Amazing place⚘. Their food is absolutely Delicious and homemade from the heart 😄. The staff is super special every time we get take out . The friendliness genuine. Many Many praises here. Making sure you have everything as well as extras. Thank you guys so much! Glad weve discovered you and thank you for going above and beyond when times are so difficult for many and especially the restaurant industry
Went there twice. First time was AWESOME!!!! Best breakfast Id had at a restaurant in years! Went there a second time and it was good, but the b&g was horrible. Everything else has been great, but that b&g... steer clear of that! LolWoulda gave it 5 stars if it wasnt for that.
Awesome, friendly and welcoming people with warm heart. We stopped in parking lot of the restaurant, but decided not to eat as the baby was sleeping in the car. The gentleman working there saw us and asked us how we were doing, and ended up offering food for baby or for us - ON THE HOUSE. We respectfully declined, but it made us really happy to see such a nice gesture. It makes me really happy to see such lovely people. Spread the love and you get back even more!! That is how world should be :)
Outstanding breakfast here. Good sized portions. The people working here are attentive and on it!! Been coming here for over 10 years off and on when Im in town and this cafe has never let me down. It is always delicious home style cooking!! Get a loaf of homemade bread to take home with ya!
Small in size but excellent customer service and great food. Family of 5, sat at the bar, server was amazing. All the servers were eager to help each other and the atmosphere was like a home town favorite for out of town visitors. The owner, Shirley, was serving coffee, cooking, and was very personeable. She gave us advice on places to visit and even wrote down detailed directions to places out of towners wouldnt have found. Kids meals were large in size and greatly priced. My husband and I ordered the Pink Lady and the Sams fav. Pink Lady was phenomenal- sour dough bread, spinach and red pepper, salmon, basted egg, and topped with hollandaise. I was pleasantly surprised by this place, and if I ever find my self back up here, I will def. Visit again. BTW Shirley- we visited the place you suggested and the boys had an amazing day.
I was trying to find a place for a old fashion diner feel, and friendly service, and good food at a fair price. My wife and I were on our anniversary trip and found this place on line. The food was all made with fresh fruit and homemade. It was just what we wanted. Great job. Food was BIG portions. More than we could finish and taste SO good. I wish I could have finished it. Miranda was a good waitress.
The employees are friendly and work as a team. Hot chocolate is amazing (wasnt hungry, sorry). Biscuits and gravy, hubby said 2.5, Biscuits great, gravy not so.. that is his tastebuds. Home made bread was awesome, bought 5 loaves (amongst 3 families) We will definitely get the word out and come back.
Great service, great food! So thrilled they are open - our family has been going for years. Enjoyed 3 eggs, toast, hashbrowns and bacon. Sis had loaded oatmeal.picked up 3 loaves of their scrumptious bread: carrots wheat, cranberry walnut and cinnamon swirl. Stop in and enjoy 🙂
If I couldve gave it 10 stars, I wouldve!! Hands down, the best hash browns Ive ever had. Excellent menu selection, easy on the wallet, plus home-made pies, cookies, and bread to-go. This place was swamped. Literally packed with people, and the service was still very fast. And extremely friendly! I love little hole in the woods cafe restaurants. They are some of the greatest hidden gems of northern Michigan and this one is definitely one you dont want to just pass by. Its a fantastic stop for families, couples, and lone travelers. Also within sight of trail crossings for the hungry pack of snowmobilers and ATV riders.
Went there for diner April 9th 2021.As always, the staff was friendly and seated us right away. We both ordered the chicken pastys and house salads. The pasty was excellent but so large we ended up splitting one and taking the other home. The waitress even gave us a gravey to go. We love this place and have never had a bad meal.
Back in the day breakfast restaurants were everywhere and for the most part very good ! Now a days their much harder to find , so when I do I like to make sure you all know it ! Diamond in the rough excellent service and the chef 5 stars thank you for keeping breakfast alive 👍👨🚒🇺🇸🇺🇸⚠️
This place was so great. Stopped in for breakfast super early. The food was excellent and they let us sample the bread and biscuits with gravy for free. The biscuits and gravy were homemade and awesome, loved the breads too.Bought a loaf of the cinnamon bread. All made from scratch. The next day we made French toast with some of the bread,it was delicious. The staff were really really helpful and nice.
My family and I have eaten there a dozen times or so. Always amazing food and very generous portions. They can get busy especially during snowmobile season but never waited longer than 15 min and 2 hours would be with the wait! Service is always exceptional no matter how busy. Going out of our way to return soon!!! Highly recommend!!!
One of my very favorite diners ever. Tons of fresh baked bread options. I had an omlette which was great- nice fresh veggies. The bunny had a mix-up of potatoes, sausage, fried jalepenos and cheese with two eggs on top. It was quite the dish!! The decor is adorable, staff super personable. A perfect diner experience.
First time there, everything was delicious. Had the cranberry and walnut homemade bread with breakfast it was out of this world. The staff was so helpful and very friendly felt like we had been going there for years. Highly recommend and make sure you try or take home some of that homemade bread.
Food is great. Very concerned about covid compliance. Wait staff didnt wear masks. Gave a crazy story that the waitresses didnt get enough oxygen. All tables were wiped down with the same cloth. Salt and pepper shakers and sugar dispensers were not wiped at all. Watched 4 tables being cleaned between customers. Love this place, all the people and especially the food, but needs to step up to state requirements.
I must say, I went in skeptical but hopeful, came out full! This place has an excellent selection of home cooked classic. They make their own bread, serving several varieties from classic White to Potato Rosemary. The have delicious house made potato chips as well. Ill be straight, the place is not much to look at but its comfy and has great food. Its the epitome of Up North Diner.
I have been coming here for years when in the area and was always very good all around, however its gone downhill dramatically, we got the hot turkey sandwich that tasted like corn starch and pan fried fish that I dont even know how to explain how bad it was, it was probably the worst tasting food weve ever paid for and the waitress was very unhelpful, very disappointing to see such a good restaurant end up like this
They tried to accommodate for my allergies, but then brought out my food on my daughters plate, instead of the fries she ordered. I was then told that they could not remake my food cause it was the last that they had. I spent 1hr 15min there so my daughter could get fries and a burger. I never got anything I could eat. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because they gave my daughters meal as complementary and the wait staff was very kind.
Ive been to Shirleys over 12 years tonight my fried fish was barely cooked. Sent it back once should have sent it back twice and my wifes burger was cheep premade patty unlike her food used to be. Sorry but may only come here for breakfast and see if that is. Still good.
My son and I went there for breakfast, we waited 10 minutes for a table to be cleaned.once the table was cleaned the staff promptly gave the table to the people who came in 8 minutes after us. The most unfriendly staff Ive ever witnessed. They never said one word to my son or myself. No good morning or we will be with you shortly, nothing. My son and I were looking forward to having breakfast together, we drove from 40 minutes away because we heard it was good. Couldnt have been more dissatisfied with the service. I dont care how good the food is when the staff blatantly makes you feel that unwelcome and unwanted. I will NEVER Go back there agian. Extremely disappointed is an understatement
The plus is the food is wonderful, the negative is they are very unorganized. Waited 15 minutes for a table, was finally seated to wait 15 more minutes for the table to be cleaned. Was told by 3 servers that someone would be right with us, to wait 45 minutes just for our order to be taken and watch several tables served that came in well after us. The only thing that made better was a sincere apology and really good food. With that said my advice would still be if it is at all busy just go somewhere else.
Absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. I had the Pink Lady and I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone; the smoked salmon and the hollandaise..... heaven. They sell their homemade bread by the loaf and we definitely took advantage of that too. We will be back down that way soon Im sure!
For a little place out in the woods, the food was AWESOME!!!! and the hospitality and service was out of this world. First time there, I loved it. If you are ever in the area, you got to stop in there and eat. And the prices are very reasonable. When Im up there again thats where we will be eating. For sure!!! God bless yall.
We stopped here on our way back to Detroit from a long Bachelorette weekend. We were so entirely satisfied. Everything was delicious and very obviously made with love. From the delicious pancakes to omelets none of us were disappointed. The food was fresh, hot and in huge portions. I would come up north just for some more of their breakfast and wonderful service.
Friendly and quick service. Real food. Real eggs with TASTE. Staff was fantastic and kind towards the kids- toddler and baby aged! Baby made a bit of a mess and i tried to clean it up and they basically stopped me and told me they could do it! Way over the top service. Wonderful place.
Going to Shirleys is like eating in the kitchen of your favorite, doting aunt. The staff blankets you with friendly, attentive service. Breakfast is fantastic! The hash browns with onions are a game changer. And the bread! The homemade bread! So many choices of toast and all of them fantastic. Stop at Shirleys and leave happy!
Their food was some of the best breakfast at a diner we have tried in quite some time. We visited from out of town this past labor day weekend. Everyone was nice with smiling faces and seemed to know the regulars that were in. Food was fresh and delicious, for great prices. Our family of four ate until we were stuffed for $32. Even their toast was good (I think they bake and sell their own homemade bread). Some very unique and over-the-top menu choices. They do have a smaller menu compared to most diners, but I think that works just fine because they are able to perfect the choices they do offer. I tried the Cajun Sledder which has cajun sausage, eggs, homefries, fried jalepeno coins, cheese, and it was absolutely amazing and also had a nice little kick. The owner, was in the kitchen helping cook which shows she really cares about her business and the food that is being served. My family was very pleased with the entire experience overall. We will definitely go back next summer when we visit Kalkaska again.
This is Shirley, owner of Shirleys in the Woods. I am responding to the review saying that a guest waited 2 hours for cold burned food at my restaurant. I spoke with my employees about this and they find it hard to believe that could miss something going so very wrong in our 12 table restaurant. I know for certain that things can and do go wrong, as we are working so hard to please so many people. I have been serving since 1969, and I can assure you that my employees and I work very hard to serve quality homemade food each and every day. I cant help but wonder how the author of this would feel if their efforts were publicly berated. We will continue to do our best, and hope that in the future our guests will tell us in person if there is a problem.
Friendly service, world class breads darn good pie and generous portions. Sounds like recipe for success on M-72 just outside of Kalkaska. Unfortunately I dont visit this area vey often but it was a great place to visit and well worth the stop! I know putting out food like this is work so I hope they continue on with success.
After going to church at Bear Lake Christian Church...we always go to Shirleys for breakfast..which is service all day long. And once again we were not disappointed. Today we bought one of her cranberry walnut breads.Cant wait to have a slice. While there she (Shirley) gave us and the other patrons a slice (right out of the oven) banana nut bread. Shouldnt have to eat for the rest if the day.😊 So my heart is full from attend church @Bear Lake Christian and my stomach full from Shirleys. Joy to all.
This Cafe is not far from me so I go there often but I would go there even if it wasnt close. The food has always been good and the prices are very reasonable. The staff is very good also they do a very robust business but still keep up with individual service. Love this place.
Went up to visit a friend in Kalkaska. We went to Shirleys for dinner. It was wonderful! Delicious meal! The salad was fresh, the roast turkey was hot and delicious, and the pie was homemade. We also had Northwoods soda which was absolutely wonderful. Definitely worth the stat!
If you want sweat dripping from the cook onto your order while being prepped/cooked(which can be seen from the window online), your food touched by cooks that fail to wash their hands, or even wear gloves...Shirleys is the place! The filthiest kitchen imaginable, Shirleys is the place! See for yourself the sanitation of that kitchen. On your way to the bathroom you can gander for yourself its right there. Just make sure youre comfortable with whos cooking or touching your food and the kitchen it comes from. If it seems questionable look over the window and determine if you are willing to accept the process. You shouldnt really have to but its your right as a paying customer to be served from a sanitary kitchen and have your food handled in a sanitary way!!!!!
Vacation down the street for 15 years and ate once at Shirley’s. Hard homemade breads and sad looking lettuce on my salad. Stopped Shirley to give her feedback, and her response was “they don’t follow my recipes, it’s hard to find good help”. Now it’s hard to find customers
One of the most hospitable restaurants i have been to, my wife and i ate breakfast there every morning of our honeymoon and the food is immeasurable delicious and the staff treat you very well and we had almost no wait time at all for our food and refills, with their many different homemade breads i suggest trying it to anyone whos has not had the pleasure, 5 stars for sure

2022-03-26The food tasted so good. Homemade bread was amazing. Corned beef hash was the best I have ever had. Beef stew was amazing, wing dings to go were the classic good taste you cant find anymore. So happily surprised after stopping on a whim.

2022-05-29One of our familys favorite breakfast places! You feel like family walking in and the food is delicious (especially the pancakes that are bigger than your head and the local pop options!) Usually busy but tables turn over quickly and its always worth the wait!

2016-11-05Amazing! Very home feeling atmosphere, amazing hot food. Homemade fresh bread, seriously this bread is phenomenal. Helpings are large with very good pricing. Staff is very friendly. They have checkers printed on the tables so you can play while you wait for your food. I loved everything about this place.
