The Ark in other cities:
This intimate venue has a great volunteer staff, a wonderful sound system, good sightlines, and is very friendly and welcoming. Its small enough that every seat in the house is a good one but its not so small that it feels cramped. The speakers are well turned loud enough without being uncomfortable or even requiring earplugs. Probably my favorite place to listen to live music in Ann Arbor!
Love The Arc! Right in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, next to the U of M campus with a wide range of restaurants within walking distance. Its an intimate 400 seat venue with very reasonable ticket prices for live music with perfect acoustics and a chance to mingle with the artist during intermission and after the show. Youre going to love it!
I absolutely love the Ark. Friendly staff (non profit organization) but they do not let that change the level of service at all!Great lighting, sound was great as well. Seating was perfect for a personal coffee house feeling. I would say its now in my top 5 favorite places.William Fitzsimmons & Jim and Sam, Mission Bell Tour 2018. A fabulous set
Great venue for live music with enough variety in performer genre to please most. Intimate and comfortable, it’s a deservedly celebrated concert space that caters to musicians and those that appreciate them. Tickets are never over priced and the staff are all volunteers. Highly support them.
A beautiful and intimate venue. Any seat in the house feels quite close to the stage and the sound is great. The walls are filled with history and so many small artists get their start or a make a name for themselves here so if you attend a concert here, you might just be a part of history in the making.
Its a cramped little place but good for the folk music it usually features. There are columns in the place that make totally unobstructed views rare. If seeing the entire stage is your thing pay for the premium seating way up front. The acoustics are pretty good. Seating is standard stackable metal chairs with minimal padding. The capacity is approximately 400. If you have general admission tickets, plan to arrive & line up plenty early if you want some choice in seating.
While Ive seen less than a half a dozen shows here through the years, I have always enjoyed them.My main experience here is as a long time attendee of the open mic night. The Arks open stage happens one Wednesday most months. 😉its a fun show so whether you want to perform or not you can show up and have a great time. You may catch some first time performers and you are likely to catch some seasoned pros.Ann arbors talent it has always been spectacular. The ark brings out the best.If youre a performer, this stage is one of the most fun to play and the audience is simply the best!
Go. Go. Go. Ive seen amazing shows, & good shows but Ive never once been disappointed here. Very intimate sized venue. Seems like every night there, an audience member says something out loud during the performance... & the performer hears them & responds! I love the easy, comfortable exchange. Live music almost every night of the year, all well performed & enjoyable, so all you really have to do is pick a genre you enjoy to find a great show.
Great sound stage. We saw Dave Alvin here and it was excellent. Its sort of a non-profit place as all of the staff are volunteers. This makes tickets cheap but its still somewhat exclusive due to its small size. Its clean, nice, with a small concession stand that serves beer/wine.I enjoyed it and Ill go back.
A great venue for some great talent! Such a wonderful organization that offers artists a place to perform and patrons an affordable place to enjoy them! Today I went there with my son for Sonic Lunch that had been rained out. The Ark opened there doors to shelter us and The Accidentals. Wonderful!!
As a newbie to visiting Ann Arbor, I think this place is an absolute gem. The staff consists of mostly volunteers and is helpful and friendly. It is an intimate setting which makes a concert or a show experience very different, in a positive way! Solid drink menu with reasonable prices. You do have to be a member to purchase drinks, or be a guest of a member.
A great space for intimate concerts, and they get really talented musicians. The seating is cushioned chairs lined around the rooms, and most tickets are general admission, so be prepared to line up outside at least 30 minutes before the doors open. They recently added wooden bars that are great for when you get a drink for the concert. They also sell popcorn.
Easily one of the nicest things about Ann Arbor is The Ark! This venue for watching music is second to none. It is a relatively small space (350ish seats), so it feels intimate. The bar has a great selection of snacks, coffee and drinks. The acoustics have never failed me. The staff are a lovely group of volunteers who welcome everyone with smiling faces. Really, go to a show here once and youre hooked.
Fantastic and intimate music venue with passionate staff and volunteers. The performers are always talented and personable. From their non-perishable donation Take a Chance Tuesday events to paid entry, the Ark offers a unique experience for music lovers of all kinds.
They make you wait in line before the show. Most of the venue was reserved for a private party, so it was hard to figure out which good seats were still available. You also have to be a member to buy alcohol, which costs $5 for a few months, or $20 for the year. Otherwise snack and drink prices are very reasonable.
Great small venue. Attended the meet and greet and Morgan James was a doll. The seating situation was weird for premium paid tickets you could not sit on the first two rows. Since there were only about 20 people at the meet and greet that was weird. Plus they waited until we were all seated to make us move. Might want to share that when purchasing tickets.
I have been to the Ark numerous times and Everytime it has been a great experience seeing wonderful performers up close and personal and having the chance to meet with performers. Perfect. Even though it is a intimate setting the chairs could use an upgrade in comfort. Nonetheless this will not stop me from going more.
A venerable venue that both finds and presents new and traditional music that is local from around the world. Started from a living room ages ago and morphing as necessary to keep these ideals alive. It is a stage that many musicians would be proud to add to their tour.Quirky liquor license requires membership to buy alcohol. You can buy a cheap membership, which you can view as donation to a worthy cause..
Intimate Venue with great soundI love the Ark. It is a community treasure that features both local and national music (sometimes both, like the Jeremy Kittel Band, who I saw last weekend).Reserved seating usually costs only a few dollars more than the general admission tickets, but theres not a bad seat in the house.
The 2nd best place to listen to music in Ann Arbor. Run by locals with donations from locals and excellent performances. While no one can compete with Hill Auditorium for sound, watching Victor Wooten jam out 20’ from me while drinking a decent beer should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Pick a night...any night, and go see a show at The Ark. Before the show, grab a nice dinner at any number of excellent restaurants in downtown Ann Arbor. Then grab a drink and some popcorn to enjoy on your way to your seats. If youd like beer & wine, you pay a very small, reasonable fee of $5 to join the private club. For $20, youre a member for a year. Join up! The Ark is all volunteer run and the $20 (or more if you like a few more perks!) will be one of your favorite investments. Oh yeah...the music. I have seen many, many shows at The Ark. The quality of the entertainers that they attract is absolutely outstanding. Every time I bring a friend along that hasnt been there, the reaction is the same: Wow!
Paid $36 for a comedy show, which is on the high end of reasonable, but ok. Was shaken down for an additional fee for the privilege of overpaying for a warm beer and $4 mocha which was just burnt drip coffee with lumpy cocoa packet mix floating on the top. Before the show we had to sit through a guilt trip about how we should donate money. Proceeded to sit through a show with a pillar obscuring half the stage. Acoustics were okay.
Not what its touted to be acoustically. My wife and I attended the Vienna Teng performance on September 27, 2013. We had never been to the Ark before and looked eagerly toward visiting the venue. (I have been a fan of Ms. Shihs work for many years and heard her perform in small venues, with light stage amplification - all great experiences.)First, despite its small size and seats located in the second row stage right. The music blared from overhead monitors controlled by a mixing board in the back of the room. To hear Tengs voice directly reveals sweet nuance and subtlety of this talented artist. This could have been easily done with light stage amplification - albeit with more difficulty. This was all lost once the PA system finished compressing and homogenizing the subtlety and nuance out of the equation.Secondly, on those songs that were softer and less reliant on the PA amplification there was a background drone of drums and bass off beat. I scoured the stage to find who was playing the drum and playing it badly. Upon leaving we discovered a club nearby blaring its own (recorded) music and it was the bass and drums bleeding into the Arks acoustic environment. We met a number of people who appeared to be regulars - enamored with the Ark. The faithful will not be swayed.Tengs performance was very good, but we left feeling disappointed with a lingering sense about the emperors new clothes and the Ark.Were not likely to return.

2022-08-04We went to The Ark for the first time this evening to see Skerryvore. The Ark is a non profit that exists on the generosity of donors and volunteers. The Ark is an intimate space for music so, they follow Covid guidelines and ask that patrons wear masks. The Ark was clean and the tickets were inexpensive to see live music. The band was exceptional and I will definitely come back to this venue for live entertainment. I parked behind The Ark on Ashley street and parking was $5.40. You can pay to become a member and I plan to do that online to support the arts and entertainment in Ann Arbor. I definitely recommend coming and seeing live music in this intimate and welcoming atmosphere!

2022-07-14The performance and staff were incredible, but there was no AC running in July. For a sold out crowd on an upper floor stage it was unbearably hot which made fully enjoying the experience nearly impossible. There was a point where we considered leaving it was that bad. While we do wish to come back for more shows, but it would be nice if this issue was addressed.

2022-07-08Ive been going here over a decade. Some seats are obstructed and terrible. There needs to be more warning. Most artists are very nice and meet up afterwards.

2022-03-08My husband and I drove 40 minutes to see one of our favorite music artists, Joshua Radin who sings the song that I walked down the aisle to at our wedding and it was very special for us to get to see him. We waited in line in the freezing cold and only when we got to the front did they tell us that we couldn’t get in without vaccination cards (which we don’t have)…but then proceeded to tell us to go inside to ask for a refund…after just telling us that we couldn’t go inside without proof of vaccination. They never sent us an email about this enforcement and requirement of vaccination was not found anywhere on the ticket.

2022-02-16The staff was so friendly and the atmosphere was amazing! I bought tickets to see Heywood Banks for my family and it was a great show, comfortable seating, good refreshments. We travelled from a couple hours away for this and it was well worth it!
