I have been a customer since I was a kid. In all honesty I have never had a bad experience here.Great food and a huge menu combined with always friendly service really makes The Hut stand out as a destination restaurant. You wont be disappointed! This business is wheelchair accessible with a ramp in the parking area.
Nice restaurant for lunch or dinner. The chopped steak was perfectly done and delicious with Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and onions. It took awhile for our server to notice we were waiting for her to take our order, but I think they may have been short staffed like every other restaurant right now.
This place is truly unique! The atmosphere on the inside reminds us of something from the 60s or 70s with the low sloping ceilings and the elongated layout. Everything is clean and modern which makes it great. I highly recommend the lasagna or the Big BLT. I would have taken a picture of both but I ate them too quickly.
Usually order take out twice a week, will have to reconsider after today. I have overlooked a lot of things and just chalked it up to someone having a bad day, however today will be the last time for a while to see if anything improves. Ask me how anyone can screw up a salad-always rotten brown slimy lettuce on the bottom. Hot beef sandwich had tons of gravy all over the place instead of separate in a cup, beef had at least an inch of fat on the edges. Told the waitress I would probably throw this food out-no sorry or what can I do to make it better from her, just a blank stare. Witnessed a girl handling dirty glasses & cups then without washing hands proceed to remove clean glasses from rack and put them away-GROSS!!!!!!!! This place used to be so good, but has been going downhill at a fast pace. Do yourself a favor and do what I did for dinner today- drive a few more miles north to Mohawk Superette deli or Sundae in the Park for a tasty meal and great service!
First of all every time we passed this place it was packed. So when we drive by today and saw it was not we decided to give it a try. First the staff was great and accommodating. The place could probably use an update but everything was clean. The food was prompt and flavorful. And they have great desserts. Oh and the restrooms are clean as well, sometimes with older restaurants the bathrooms are terrible but this place has great, clean restrooms. Give this place a shot!2022 UpdateDo not try the BLT, shredded lettuce, two little tomatoes and bacon so overcooked it fell apart into dust. But the staff is still great.
Its sad to see a long time Copper Country Tradition circulating the drain & sinking. Back in the 70s thru the 90s ( In my era) The Hut was to go to place for Quality Food, Generous Portions, Great Service, all at Great Pricing, In a Clean Welcoming Environment. There slogan was The Place of Warmth & Enchantment. Not anymore. Its now The Place of Heartaches & Dispair. Its sad to see this Restaurant going down hill. Its been heading this direction for a Good many years. Theyre continuously out of items. Take for Instance this past Evening ( 1/14/21,) No Whitefish, Trout, Steak, Or BBQ Ribs. This isnt the First time this has happened. Your Sunday Roast Beef Dinners dont hold a Candle to years past. The same can be said for The so called Steak Burger Deluxe. You get a better burger at Home.A Restaurant is as good as its Manager, If he or she doesnt care, it reflects through out. They dont have the same interest as an Owner would My Advice, Bring back the Old Hut, You will have much happier Customers. By the way, How about a Dust Rag, Good Mopping, Vacuuming. Its really sad to see how far South this place has gone.Tim PoyhonenHancock, Mi
Great food and great atmosphere. Everything we have ordered here has been good! Good for families or a date. They have so many options from Mexican, to burgers, sandwiches, salads, pasta and traditional plates too. I do think fries should come included with their burger and sandwich choices without the $3.50 upcharge. $11.50 was what I paid for the cheapest burger with fries which seemed high.
We had the small Lake Superior whitefish (Friday night special, you know). It came baked, and was delicious. The atmosphere is very cozy and rustic. No alcohol or beer, in case thats important to you. It was busy, but we were seated fairly quickly and were served in a reasonable amount of time.
I went there solely to try their pasty because I read that is was one of the best in Michigan. The size of the pasty was huge in size, but it lacked in flavor. The pasty was certainly good, but I felt like it was bland and lacked any flavor or seasoning. My only other complaint is that the potatoes inside the pasty were cubes, I prefer the potatoes to be chipped. We walked in and order ours to go and it took maybe 10-15 minutes for them to be ready. They had an entire take out menu that you can order from or if you dine there it looked like a fairly large restaurant.
Took my dad here for lunch when I was back home for vacay… really sad disappointment. The chicken sandwich had 3 frozen chicken strips on it, fries were cold. Soup wasn’t great. Roast beef sandwich had no seasoning and au jus had no flavor. Reuben was good! For $50, I’d rather go just about anywhere else - again, which is sad because I love supporting local and the building is just gorgeous. Maybe a smaller, rethought scratch menu would really help make this place a true gem.
Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the restaurant considering the location. The food, especially the sandwiches are great, and come with a generous helping of fries or onion rings on the side. The inside of this restaurant is really nice with very comfortable seating and tables.Very happy with finding this restaurant way up north
My favorite restaurant missed the mark on both my summer vacations.... first week... out of the wonderful ribs I came for. Second week, where do I start? Seated at a table with no silverware, was served coleslaw that had no dressing and no flavor, both my guest and I felt we were eating lettuce. We commented to each other that it didnt even have a cabbage flavor. We told the waitress and she exchanged it for salads. Both of us ordered ribs, they were so tough, we had to struggle to cut them with even the knife we were given .If you hiired a new cook, fire him. If you have no help, then roll up your sleeves... at this rate, you wont be around for people to review you.
I have been eating here for over a decade. they changed the menu and took off some of their best items. NO longer can you get the roast beef plate, country fried steak, and no fried chicken. I ordered the rib eye steak and it was horrid! half was fat. I will no longer eat here. you need to bring back the good food. I will be letting all my friends know to avoid this place until they get their act together.
Ive eaten here several times on vacation. The food is good, the atmosphere is one of a kind, the service is great, but the pasties and gravy are OUTSTANDING! The best pasty Ive had, it takes me back to my childhood and all the comfort foods. And reminds me of visiting my aunt in Ironwood and being introduced to pasties. Im so glad I found my new pasty place.
Stopped in here off a munchys impulse. After visiting Lume dispensary and waterfalls all day i doggs were barking and my tummy rumblin. We pulled in like 845 and they close at 9 so i wasnt even sure they were gonna seat us.When I walked in i was way curious....first of the smells coming from the parking lot (ribs steak and fries I think) then by the inside. Its quant and nice scenery. Definatley a must if your ever near 41
Flies, smoke and out of steaks…Flies…OH the flies!! :(First off the amount of flies buzzing around all over you and your food was HORRIBLE. It was to the point you had to eat with one hand and constantly wave away the flies with the other. Not enjoyable.Second, there is 0 ventilation in the kitchen so all of the grill smoke FILLS up the entire dining room. This along with the AC not working made it very uncomfortable.Lastly and I give them a little bit of slack (Covid), they were out of both of their Ribeye and Flat Iron steaks. Being that this is their signature plates it was a true disappointment. It’s too bad for the issues above as this place could have some real potential here. Being retro and all.The servers were doing the best they could bit were really being brought down by the faults stated above.
The atmosphere of the place gives a laid back, relaxed, and almost private feeling. The wait staff are polite, the food arrives quickly, and the menu has a nice selection without being expansive. The food was wonderful! If you get a chance to stop here, try the Hut Burger, you wont regret it.
Service is usually pretty slow, but I cant think of a single place in the Calumet area where there is fast service. So on the Keweenaw scale, theyre pretty okay. They can handle rushes better than most local restaurants. Been several times to have the waitress only show up to take our order and give us drinks just once, then show up to give us the check without ever filling up drinks again, though.Eating gluten free here is fairly easy with the wide selection of food, and they are good about modifying menu items to exclude gluten, but beware they recently changed their fries to now have a batter on it. Used to be pretty awesome fries that I could handle, since fried in same oil rarely bothers me. Ate the fries recently and had a very unpleasant evening as a result. Harsh reminder to always bug the waitress every single dang time if an item is gluten free. Wish there had been a note or something somewhere of the change. Oh well.
Great place. Myself and a large group came here for dinner as our other place for dinner that required reservations, fell through from a scheduling error on their part and us getting stuck behind a major car accident. The staff was polite, friendly and able to manage a group with only an hour notice. The food was hot and the service was great. How do you top that?
Really cool 50s bar built in 1951 by some guy who was neither a builder or architect who wanted it to emulate the geographical features of the area. Its worth a stop just to check it out. Food is very good and they have one of best pasties in the UP according to M Live. The menu has something for everyone. They only serve soft drinks. I had the pastie and sloup and my wife had the chili and a dinner salad, everything was great with fast friendly service. Pricing is extremely reasonable.
This was a quiet place, dimmed lights just enough to not be so bright like average lights, there is a walk up window to by ice cream. The employees were exceptional! And food delicious!. The inside was spacious with several areas to dine. Fireplace by the front. Easy to see from road, lots of parking. If your going by stop in and give your taste buds a treat!
This is a great restaurant with a unique atmosphere. Although it may look a bit kitschy, the setting is very suitable for the winter months. Food is great and really well priced. Be just aware that portions are massive, so be careful before you end up ordering too much food.
We heard the service could be slow, so we got the breakfast buffet and mentioned to our waitress we were in a hurry. That way the people who wanted breakfast could get all their good right away, and the one who wanted a mud pie for breakfast got it pretty quickly, too. This place is a fixture, has great comfort food, and you can relax in the spacious booths while you wait for your food.
Service was on spot.. food was nothing spectacular, zucchini sticks over cooked a bit. The ribs did pull from the bone, but was no were near melt in your mouth soft, chilli was good, had nice seasoning not to hot spice wise. The fish and chips were good. The fish wasnt greasy, the fries were golden as they should be but not soggy.. Worst part NO BEER to complement the food served.
Very retro looking establishment. Very large menu. What we had was delicious, and the quantity enormous. Pricing was very reasonable. No alcohol. Would have maybe given five stars, except the staff kept us waiting at the front door for what did not appear to us to be a good reason. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful.
We sat for about 10 minutes before I waitress even acknowledged us and then just came up didnt introduce herself and ask what we wanted to eat. Didnt explain the specials, and had no idea that they were out of anything. My wife ordered the white fish and she came back 5 minutes later to tell us that they didnt have any.The chili really didnt have much taste to it at all And my walleye was merely mehThe only thing keeping this from being a one star was the fact that weve been there before and the service was good and the burgers were good. Guess we should have stuck to burgers
My wife and I love The HUT Inn, because it reminds us of the 1970s. In the best way possible. Old school entrees, cooked awesomely! And be sure to ask about the grasshopper or mocha ice cream pie; they are homemade, and delicious. (but limited supply).Comfort food at its best.
I live/ grow up in this town and all know alot of people in this town. But this 4th of July with covid-19 it seem the Hut wasnt ready or prepared. My heart goes out to to all the workers, but look like they ware understaffed, and kinda rushing around. We got seated petty quicky was good. But we sat there for 10 to 15 minutes waiting, for are waitress to meet us, get us water. If you reading this review who made ever you be. They have good food. And good people there. Just they more people in the Hut.
For this area they have a large menu selection which is really nice. I only went once tho, and I wish I ordered something different. I ordered two fish frys to go (Cod) the batter was well seasoned and it tasted good. Then after the first bite the fish literally just fell out of the batter. It happened to my husbands fish as well. So we didnt eat it because the fish was kind of mushy and the batter was very thick and it wouldnt stay on the fish. I wish we ate inside, some things might not be as good when you order them to go. We ended up going to the beach instead of re-ordering dinner. Im going to still give them a 3/5 just because I think if we dined in that we wouldve had a different experience.
Im a Yooper that now lives in Virginia. I recently visited the Copper Country area and had the pleasure of dining at the Hut Inn. The atmosphere, service, food, price, quality and quantity of food was absolutely outstanding. On our first visit we took my mom and we all had a local favorite, a pasty. My mom has lived in the U.P. for 74 years and she said it was one of the best pasties she ever had. Light on the crust, heavy on the filling. My wife and I agree, absolutely delicious and served with a side choice. The side salad is huge. We went back a second time for ice cream. The Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream is heavenly. My wife and I liked the Hut Inn so much that we returned for a third visit. The next time I visit the U.P. I will definitely stop at the Hut Inn. Excellent in every way.
Can never get to go or delivery orders correct. Food is wonderful, but after listening to to staff being denigrating because I called to resolve, once again, not receiving the food I ordered and paid for in advance, Ill never go back. This happens over and over. Ranch dressing for salads even when you spell the word French, request no cheese only to have the item smothered in cheese when its delivered. Im done. I cannot recommend this place and I certainly wont be spending my hard earned money there again.7/20/18Again, cant get order right. My husband insisted that we call them for lunch. We called at 5:30p to get a delivery at 8:00p to our work. 8p and no delivery. Call the restaurant, turns out our food is just coming up at 8p, and delivery isnt possible for another 10-15min. Thanks Alot. We currently get 30min for lunch, and you just took away 15 of them. I bet the order isnt correct when it does show up.
Great food, fast service, cozy environment. Casual dress. Popular stop for summer travelers destined for Copper Harbor and snowmobiles during the winter months. A walk-up ice cream window is open during the summer. My personal favorite lunch/dinner is their Waterfront (French dip) sandwich.
The food is okay. The majority of the staff is typically highschool students, however Im not sure about the chefs themselves. I get what I ask for but for some reason Im always slightly underwhelmed by the meals. Ive been here about four or five times in the past few years.
We visited after reading how great their pasties were. Having had several different pasties over the last few years we were excited to try theirs. We were greeted upon entering with a dingy atmosphere. There was a Please wait to be seated sign. We waited about five minute before someone finally realized we were waiting. Service is important to me and that was poor front of house serve. The pasty was not anything to rave about. The only positive thing Ill say was the crust was flaky and tasty. The filling inside was lacking any flavor. Some of the meat inside mine seemed to lack quality, almost being gristly. In summary skip this place. The food we had was subpar and lacking any flavor. The decor is outdated and the place seems to be needing a lot of updating and maintenance. I will not visit again. One final note if you read some (what we were told was older) information it says they have free WiFi, that is incorrect. We are from down state and have no cell signal so we were looking forward to having that WiFi.
Have been to the hut inn a handful of times. Service is TERRIBLE every single time. Not sure if they dont have enough waitstaff or just hire inexperienced waitstaff but plenty of tables are always open yet we wait at least 20 minutes to get a table each time. Food is decent. Plan for a 2 hour meal and dont go if youre starving.
We love to stop here when we go up to and come back from Copper Harbor on summer vacation....Such a treat! When we lived nearby we were able to go more often, now I have to be satisfied with my yearly excursion.Interesting ambience and delicious fresh eats at reasonable prices. Try the chicken livers! I recommend The Hut Inn...you will be pleasantly surprised.
My husband and I stopped in to have an early anniversary lunch. We got there 12:45 we left an hour later with no food and no drinks. Only water was given. We sat for 30 minutes straight with out any interaction with the waitress after she took our drink order. We eat here a lot but after this we wont be dinning here anymore.
If I could use 0 stars I would. Got sat at a table and stared at by the wait staff for 20 minutes without being given even water. Clearly they didnt want business, so Im not going to give it. I wonder how long we wouldve had to wait to even get a water, let alone food.
I love this place for the main fact that I have many memories of going as a child. They used to have live music on weekends and a pond you could see from inside. They dont have those things any more and service is generally hit or miss especially if you come close to closing. . But I still like it :)
Been up here 2 weeks been eating out a lot went into the hut knew we were in trouble should have walked out then the hostess set us down told the waitress that we were there she said with her eyebrows lipid those are my people two other tables were filled after we set down the other two waitress they had one trait to them got their order we ordered mushrooms deep fried 15 minutes later she says they dont have any mushrooms 20 minutes later the other two tables had your food I heard them say that they were out of two more things in the kitchen after half an hour we got up I paid for my Ice-T and left never to return you need serious help or you going to go under

2022-05-28Great meals! Every time I can not eat all the dishes. They gave a lot. Like this place and the price is good

2022-01-18Large and filling portion sizes, flavors were decent but wasnt particularly outstanding. The french onion soup of the day definitely kicked off the meal with a punch of flavor, but the chilli soup was bland in comparison. The Danwich was stacked and filling, onion rings were crispy and delicious but the taco salad despite being fresh was lacking in its taco meat seasoning, with ranch and salsa pulling it across the finish line. Service was fantastic and courteous, with a great atmosphere and vibe.

2021-10-14Huge potato skins, full basket of zucchini sticks, daily special was delicious, and the large chopped steak was definitely a hearty serving and the side of wild rice was hearty as well. Super friendly waitress (Lia) with prompt service. Glad we decided to come even though there was a few negative reviews. I would highly suggest when in the area.

2022-03-27Pretty good. I ordered the hut hut burger. Not seasoned too good and the chili tasted extremely bland. I had to use a massive amount of salt and pepper to give it a flavor. The service was excellent though. Price was good also. My only complaint is adding some seasoning wouldnt hurt. I understand some people cant have much seasoning but it doesnt need to be completely lacking flavor.

2022-04-29Food was okay, I got the mushroom swiss steak with a side of mash potatoes and the award winning chili. The chili wasnt really anything special, and the steak itself was also just okay. If it werent for the mushrooms and caramelized onions toppings it would be completely lacking in flavor. I think the chili was missing salt and maybe some spices, while the steak was lacking in salt and garlic, definitely had potential if pan seared appropriately with plenty of salt and garlic/butter. On a positive note, the mash potatoes were great! Good garlic taste and the accompanying gravy was delicious.Service was excellent, the waiter was attentive but not invasive. The place is nice too, albeit a bit of a drive out. Overall, Id say the price to flavor ratio is lacking, at least for those particular items I mentioned.

2022-02-13Delicious food, as always! A little bummed that the menu was fully up to date in what was available but the waitress was wonderful and answered all our questions. To anyone wondering- they do sell deep fried mushrooms there! Also, their homemade ranch is the best in town.

2021-07-15Home style food in large proportions. The smothered chicken was excellent. Same for the pork chops and liver & onions. Fun rustic atmosphere with excellent service.

2022-06-05The food was okay.I got a burger with a side salad. The salad was just iceburg lettuce. The burger was fine. Nothing special. We kept getting bit by mosquitoes because the front door didnt close all the way .Sister ordered ribs. She said they were dry and flavorless.Service was good.

2022-06-02Walked in was looked at by three people no one said hello I stood their and waited to be seated nobody else was waiting I looked at my phone two people walked in they instantly greater them and took them to be seated I told them to have a good night if your looking for an expensive dinner at a budget job establishment if you looked at the walls theirs lights are sideways they are poorly placed ones a foot taller than the others down the wall if you want a seat cushion that they just put duct over and you sink into a country mile this is the dinner for you! Been their at least ten times about two times I had decent waitress. Another time I was seated by a hostess and then 20 minutes later a waitress comes up and says have you been helped yet?
