The Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center in other cities:
Very well organized... relatively clean for a thrift store. Some items are way overpriced though. If its an old hoodie it shouldnt be $5 or $6 bucks. $1 or $2 maybe. A small old crockpot was priced at $12.99 that is a pretty ridiculous amount of money for that. You can still find some decent stuff there if you pick. Id pay up for certain things but dont price everything like that.
Unfortunate experience as older man takes our donated items out of our car after 1st looking in and commenting unbelievable! What a poor attitude!! We even offered to help. This is our 1st and last time donating to them!! Youre welcome, Salvation Army, for our FREE donations!!!
What happened to please and thank you? While I cant say if clerks say thank your for shopping with them, I can tell you donation drive-thru workers rarely do! After a 40 minute wait in the line and leaving quite a few very nice items, I was told, Youre all set to go, This is not the first time either but is rather a trend and not a good one! I noticed that the method of intake has changed during Covid and is quite inefficient perhaps due to not being able to hire enough workers; I cannot say why. Training personnel to say a simple, Thanks, or Thank you, costs nothing, doesnt take that much effort for managers to include in their training program although they may need to give occasional reminders. Let employees know why they should give a thank you btw! Without donations they wouldnt have jobs. This promotes good will also. I will be taking my next donation to another good cause center and see if the new place has personnel trained to say, Thank you, and mean it!
The drop off location is busy. As of now donations are 10-2 Wednesday to Saturday. Be prepared to wait. The workers seem to have an attitude taking donations. Previously they ripped open my bags and put several things back in the car. Felt like I was smuggling something. Most of the items were kids books and board games. I asked the worker if they take board games, and he just shut the door and walked away. Im sure people donate a lot of junk and missing pieces. I make sure not to do that. Today everything was taken but same attitude and I was not offered a receipt (which was fine). I understand Covid has changed donations too, so change the procedure, have rules to separate goods, etc. We are just trying to do something good for someone else.
Really good I found a vintage chair. I was looking for a smallChair for my bedroom. Found my colors & what I was looking for. Good price too. Also found something for someone else. My daughter & I have good luck at the brighton store. We didnt have any green tags soNothing was 50% off still we were satisfied. Prices are up from what they were the last two years.
Love the store but some of the stuff is overpriced, I can buy it new @ retail stores. The other reason Im giving this store a 3 ⭐ is because of a cashier named Rita who is an EXTREMELY RUDE & always has an attitude and lets you know shes not a nice person. Shes always grumpy!
Your pricing has gotten way out of control!!! I realize the army does a lot of good, have known that all my life, but with your helping some, you are also hurting others by such high prices...There needs to be a balance and compassion for ALL! It’s pretty sad when you go on “Senior” day to get 25% off and still can’t afford to buy many things! I feel you are loosing your way:(
The selection depends on the day, which is to be expected. I feel like their prices have gone up a LOT in the past few months, though. Little glass trinkets and cups that used to cost just a dollar or two are now marked from $4-$10. Seems greedy considering they get all their products for free.
The rudest workers ever! Never dropped off clothes here before and wont be attempting again. What was less then a 5 min encounter with only rude sharp remarks, ended with me taking my single bag of clothes back from them to go find another place that might actually take them with a slight smile on their face or even a simple thanks, have a good one. If you dont like working there enough to be rude to everyone, maybe you should find a different place to help.
I was in the donation car line for an hour! Only 8 cars in line!!! I could see 4 workers and only 1 older man was unloading each car, taking one small item at a time out of each car. Seriously, rotate people and let the younger ones lift!! And, bring a cart closer to the car. I called the store to complain to the manager and she said they had way too many donations right now. If they dont want donations, dont take them, but dont leave cars lined up for an hour to donate!! There is no way to turn around or get out of line once you are lined up!!! I also agree with others who posted...items sold here are priced way too high, I think they mark up so whatever color is on sale each week is the true price. I have found a mismatched item or part of a set thats broken and they wont lower the price. Its all donated, sell it reasonably priced...not more than the dollar store! When I have time to drive, I go to the two salvation army stores on m-59, toward Waterford, those two stores have awesome employees and correctly priced merchandise!! This Brighton store needs some help, whether donating items or purchasing items we are helping less fortunate people out through the salvation army mission, wish the store employees made you feel that way...man didnt say hi, bye, thanks, nothing when I went through the car donation line.
Called the store to see if they were accepting clothing donations, answer was yes, from 10am to 2pm Tues - Sat. Loaded the car and drove over to the store to find a line of cars waiting to drop off donations; joined the line at 1:42pm. At 2pm a man came out from the back and told everyone that wasnt up to the building yet that the donations were closed and waved us, about 10 cars, away. Nobody had told me I had to be up to the building by 2pm or I wouldnt have waited in line for 20 minutes. I called the manager to complain and was told that was the way they do things. Completely unacceptable. I went over to the Kroger store and donated $5 to the man who had been standing out front with the kettle in the cold since 10am. He deserves my donations. The people at the Brighton store dont deserve my time or donations.
I felt extremely unsafe. Extremely. I felt like I wasn’t their customer either. I thought they cared about my health and well being as a customer. The two cashiers today didn’t even look at me when I told them I have bad asthma and notified them that someone had no mask. They said they can’t do anything... There are stores out there that are more customer friendly. Equal customer health and safety policy , which I am not receiving here at the Brighton Salvation Army. People don’t like to wear masks-I get it...I don’t like it either. Hard to breath. I wear it. It just disappoints me. I almost lashed out in anger when they let so many inside without a mask. They have a tiny note written in “marker” saying “masks are required” - yet they aren’t enforcing it, and cashiers won’t look at me in the eye to address my concern-who I am a customer in their store. I chose not to buy anything after seeing 5 total people walk around without a mask. This is within a half hour of me being there. What about the other hours they are open for business? Aren’t they looking to make money? Is there a customer first policy? I am a customer, too, I thought. I followed your rules for the mask requirements. Why am I the one being punished and ignored??? Don’t shop here if you want to be treated as an equal customer. If I lashed out I would’ve gotten in trouble or kicked out, but they let maskless idiots who care of only themselves defy the rules and considerations you put in place. You let them roam around free to do as they wish, when I obey your rules and am being ignored and treated less fairly. I wouldn’t buy again. I would buy again if they were to change this. I always speak up, because it’s a problem at so many Salvation Armys, whom are nonprofit. Don’t just change today, it has to be consistent. Or I am not shopping. I used to buy soooo much.
I do not have much experience with the store itself but the staff where you drop off donated items are very slow. Every time we go there to donate items it takes us over an hour to go through the line just to have them tell us different ridiculous rules about what they accept and what they don’t. They are making this process extremely inconvenient.
Great selections, friendly workers and they are always working never see any one lollygaggin when I visit here. Im here on a weekly basis. The only thing I suggest is have a few tissues with you in case you need to tinkle, theres been a shortage of it in the restrooms.
A female employee snatched 2 dressers out from me today.the price tickets were still on them and it didnt say SOLD anywhere..She walked up and said Oh these are sold.but they obviously werent. I shouldve caused a ruckus..i truly believe she wanted them and made sure she got them..very disappointed.
Shop her VERY often because it is the biggest one around for clothing. It gets super busy and I imagine it has to be an incredibly hard place to work most days. BUT there are always at least 2 (and tonight at 8:30pm there were 5) registers open and always at least 2 people running things from the dressing room back out to the floor. The dressing rooms have to be the biggest challenge and I wish people would just be decent and help out. Did no ones mother teach them to put clothing back on the hangers when you were done!?!? There was an employee there tonight named Tina who was not only keeping up with the steady pace of the dressing rooms but also making light welcoming conversation. Salvation Army is lucky to have her she was so pleasant at the end of what must have been a busy day (it was 1/2 off clothing when I was there). Already liked this store BUT employees like Tina (and the lady’s at checkout as well) I like it even more after today!!!
Super friendly staff and the store is always clean, however, the prices have been going up... A LOT.I get it, its for charity, but many thing are priced as though they are new. These items are given to them FREE. Simple things like VO5 shampoo.... at any other store its priced NEW .99 but at this store 1.99. Ive been shopping at this store for years, but not so much anymore because of the higher pricing. Walking thru the store you can hear many people complaining about the prices. Its almost like its under new management and its going to ruin this store for sure.Bring back fair prices and you will bring back more customers
Waiting in line to donate a couch, got here at 1:10 it’s 1:55 and still waiting with 10 cars in front of us! We can’t leave cuz we’re trapped in line! There is no reason for this, it’s a donation center with posted hours! if you don’t want donations and can’t keep up with them, then get out of the business! This stores prices are rather high and the majority of staff is rude! I will definitely continue to shop at Veterans of America and Milford and South Lyon Salvation Army stores!
My wife and I have donated many car loads of things over the last couple years to the Brighton Salvation Army store. The receivers have been rude and picky almost every time. We took some things left over from a garage sale and attempted to donate them. The receivers refused our things telling us they had to many already and we dont sell this, etc. We were floored and left. Drove over to a different Salvation Army and they happily accepted our things. Made a complaint to the corporate office and they apologized for the Brighton location behavior. And were told to expect a call from the Brighton store manager with an apology. The call never came! Most of the Brighton staff are very rude and cold. And their prices are extremely high on a lot of things. Just beware for donating and shopping there.
I have been going here weekly for years. I buy certain items to donate to charity. In the past few months, their prices have almost doubled. They have weekly specials. for certain colored tags; colors change every Monday. Good luck finding items with that color tag, even on Monday. I went today (Monday) a half hour after they opened. There were 2 (TWO) items with the sale color in the department in which I was shopping. When I complained to the worker in that area, she snottily said they were all bought already. Highly doubtful as the store was quite empty. The cashier, whom I spoke to also, who is familiar with me and my buying habits, just shrugged her shoulders as well, non interested. They used to be packed, so packed that people would be annoyed. No worries now... The store is now always noticably not as crowded, and many people have also made the comment how high their prices have become. It is showing in the amount of people who shop there now. I am disappointed in what they have become. Greedy and unappreciative of customers. The personnel have poor attitudes as well. Sad.
Two stars because I use to like donating and shopping here BUT DOLLAR STORE ITEMS BEING SOLD FOR 2$. AND THEY HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY RUDE. IM NOT THE ONLY ONE SAYING THIS EITHER.. Anyway she tried to take something from my hands pushing down frame and ripping plastic covered artwork that I was buying at the counter because I was moving it to the other side to make room for the next in line (with their hands/arms full). I guess they have no common courtesy for anyone! I ended up not even wanting it. Ive had enough rudeness and BS!!! I really wanted the item too.. Not about value or money! Its about the point of feeling good for donating and helping, buying things of intrest. but they took all that.. Greedy greedy selfish attitudes!! Prices are high, And I dont feel any good cause goodness there anymore.
The employee Belinda is incredibly rude and lazy. Perhaps she is tolerable in person, but she certainly should not be manning the phone lines with such a nasty attitude. Only moments before speaking with her I called the Walled Lake location and the sweet employee there was very professional, MORE than happy to help, and it took less than 30 seconds for her to find an answer to my inquiry. I would seriously consider having Belinda retrained by that woman.
First time I have been to salvation army since they started charging for bags. I was with my daughter and she said to me wow they are charging for bags now thats dumb. The cashier immediatly got an attitude and said well its for a good cause. I just spent $20 and my daughter spent $20, that goes to your good cause I shouldnt be charged for a bag, that said you have lost a customer, not because of the bag but from the attitude your cashier gave us. Last time I checked you dont give paying customers an attitude especially since by me shopping with you helps your good cause.
Usually good experiences here, for a thrift store it is kept pretty well organized. However be cautious buying furniture from here, after I paid, I was told they would have someone right up to help me carry the furniture out of the store. I waited close to what seemed like 25 minutes, before one of the guys running the register finally stepped off and was able to help.
5 for $5 Fridays & Saturdays are a SUPER great deal! The staff are friendly and willing to help if you need it. After going at different times, I know when to go for short or non-existent lines. If you arent willing to spend some time looking for the deals and sizes you need, then dont bother- leave it for me :) Thanks!
Absolutely agree with Jenny J. The prices here are extremely high as she stated in her review. This is free stuff being resold that should be benefiting the less fortunate. The fact that they wont haggle really irritates me too. Again this is free stuff given to them by our community. If your prices are too high and you wont haggle on your bloated prices whats the point...
Just beware of extremely high pricing. Occasionally I shop here (I like vintage Pyrex and glassware), but the pricing here is comparable to EBay or even higher and EBay pricing is marked up.They have items sold at Homegoods priced higher than retail. Just don’t assume the pricing g at this particular Salvation Army is the best deal. Clothing at this store is also high (unless marked down)-kid’s clothing is more affordable at Once Upon a Child (and more current) in many cases.
I always go into salvation army and have a great experience today I went in found what I needed and spent some extra time in there but I felt like there was constant arguing, or there was something going on just everybody felt like a grumpy spirit.Everything felt like it was very clean better than usual but the atmosphere thought it all different.
Wouldn’t be so bad, except for their homophobic tendencies with the entire company. If you look even slightly different don’t expect any sort of respect, and you can look forward to being spoken down to by the cashiers. My boyfriend was berated for buying from a clothing line that was “womanly” for a unisex sweater, after being extremely rude and dismissive the entire interaction. Also, not sure when they started charging for bags, because only a few months ago that wasn’t the case. It wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t try to pawn them off as “reusable” when they’re the same plastic bags they’ve always used. If you work for a charitable company, maybe you should consider being a respectful and nice person. There are much better thrift shops that not only cheaper but far cleaner and more respectable. I won’t be back.
10 for $5 sale, I had 7 items and they wouldnt give me the sale price. The rude cashier wouldnt let me get out of line to grab 3 more items unless I waited in the ridiculous line again (which is always ridiculous, because they only keep 1 person on at all times). Long story short, my wife spends about $50/week at this store until now. We wont be back. Thanks for being a shining example of Christianity in the marketplace.
I wanted a few items n stopped by hoping they might have something. I was pleasantly surprised by the great variety of items, lots of items on sale n excellent organization n condition.I found everything I was looking for n more. I recomend this store for unique items for a really good price. Have a fun day!
Was not very good. Certain parts of the store smelled, Halloween stuff was all in a pile and so so many clothes . Lines were long. Which I expect, but when someone goes to the front and is waited on first I take offense. The checker was checking the line but the lady put it over on her. My visit was not as pleasant as other times. Sorry.
Big selection but VERY OVERPRICED. Alot of the things I saw in there were being sold for maybe 3 or 4 dollars below retail prices and not even in great condition. They were selling a purse that was badly stained and smelled like mold for $19.99.They get everything for free there is no reason to have prices like that. They would make more money to go to a good cause if things were more reasonably priced bc they would sell more items and in return make more money and move more product.
One of the best out of a half a dozen Ive been to, especially in the last month or so. Staff is very attentive. Long lines are sometimes a problem, but Ive learned to expect them. Only shop there when I have extra time to browse, I mean what do you want for such a bargain!
The staff accepting donations out back is absolutely and consistently miserable. I have never been to a donation center that is consistently filled with mean, miserable and just plain rude individuals. Its a complete disappointment that this is acceptable behavior by the management. This year, Ive probably dropped off 5 car loads of donations, each and every single time the same experience in the donation center. Super angry and mean staff that do not know what customer service is. I will be taking my donations elsewhere.
Donation line is way to long, only short hours, I have gone on my lunch hour which is 30 mins lunch only, 4 times now and over 20 cars in line. Tues through sat 10am to 2pm? I have over 12 huge bags on my car waiting to be dropped off but cant spend 2 hours in line. Will try livonia drop off.
We love coming to this Salvation Army in Brighton. It is absolutely awesome, the staff are wonderful and we love love shopping for others and for ourselves. We are very grateful for you to be here for us, you’ve been just an amazing help for many.God bless you, thank you.
Worst place ever not even at fair prices and the way the management treats their employees is horrible, i have never work there and wish no one to and feel sorry for the people who do. your a manager of a thrift store stop acting as if you some how important and your selling diamonds. and for people who have to work for manager Ashley i wish you the best to find another job. people please if you want to really save money hen use the little extra gas find a salvation army down river where their prices are 3/4 cheaper than Brightons
Doing the most good.. More like doing the most grumping, grumbling, and griping! Or maybe doing the most damage! Today I tried to donate a perfect quality wood dining table with a working leaf section. I had the leaf for it and everything! They slammed it off my truck breaking one of the table legs and then told me they couldnt take it because a leg was broke. I had to load it back in while they adamantly refused to say it was them who broke it. I then talked to the next couple in the donation line behind me who said, We clearly heard and saw the leg break when it hit the ground! Too bad we dont have a dash camera! ... Looking back I definitely would have just put it by the road if I knew that was going to happen! A whole family could have used that table but now its scrap. I am 100% not going to donate anything worth over $1.00 to this salvation army ever again!
The last 2 times I was in this store the line was so long it snaked around towards the side. Those 2 times I walked out of the store without buying anything. Today I was there and I was 3rd in line . BUT, that still took 20 minutes to check out!!! Instead of writing this store off completely I decided to call ...I asked for a manager and was placed on hold .... never talked to one!!! So I tried!!!! Never again will I shop here
Went in for some work shirts. Nothing fancy, just a basic t-shirt or whatever. OMG!! $6.99 for the basic shirt cost. Blue jeans were $8-$12. The nick-nack stuff is super over priced! A basic stove top pot averages $9-$14. Really?? A throw blanket, whatever its called was $9.99! Sure there are some things that are around $3. Found a scratched up picture I thought would be cool for my kitchen. $7.99. The corners were badly scuffed with scratches on it. I cant believe the prices at this place. It used to be an o.k. priced place. But its all about the money, money, money now! Salvation army? More like Salvation Armani. I wont be going back any time soon!
So ridiculously over priced! I understand that Salvation Army helps a lot of people with the money they make at these stores BUT...its all donated. This store prices things way too high. They even sell donated, brand new, tag still on the item, items for more than the price on the tag! Shame!
Salvation Army superstore. Like all salvation armys a lot of the stuff is probably just clutter for the average person but everyone will be able to find those few items they really like and leave with the satisfaction knowing you got a great deal. Friendly staff with different discounts every day.
Five stars only because Haley was a kind & helpful worker. If it werent for her Id give 1 star. There was a man at the drop off who was horribly rude. Belittled me when i asked the date when writting on the slip. Threw valuables that i was donating violently. Let this man go so he can do his community service elsewhere. Because that behavior is unacceptable.
Would rate zero if possible. WAY TO EXPENSIVE. Youre items are DONATED stop trying to charge more than retail stores. Its absolutely ridiculous. Spent a long time there when they do 5 for $5 tag deals. Guy up front said these tags have been tampered with. i have to re price. they more than triped the price of the original tag. oh..my.....god. Left everything up front and left. SCREW THAT. I dont want your smelly used clothing for $15.
Stopped here was told I could not shop there because I wasnt wearing a mask, first of all I dont believe anything the who says and my allergies are so bad breathing is a struggle, and I will be dammed if I amgoing to cover my face and make breathing even harder, I will never be back, give you one penny, donate anything
They dont let you know when theyre closing then didnt let pay for the things I had Ill never go back there again.I was at the Cash register and she said come back the next day and get my stuff .I told her no I live out of town.I left my cart with the things I WAS GOING TO BUY AT THE CASHIER CHECK OUT.
Terribly unorganized, and Evelyn up at checkout was extremely rude. Not to mention the fact that I was told that if I wanted my stuff in a plastic grocery bag, it would be an additional charge....are you kidding me?!?!? Save yourself the frustration, and skip this place.

2022-01-14I don’t know who is pricing clothing and furniture, But they aren’t thinking clearly. These prices compare to resale/consignment shops, which shouldn’t be the case considering their pieces are in much better shape (see pictures below for reference… it was around $145. What?) What happened to helping out the community in need for a reasonable price, especially when you have items donated for free? I understand you need to pay employees a decent wage, but when almost everything is donation based, what is your justification for the price gauging? Just because Brighton is a higher income area does not mean that many people still rely on SA for deals. Jacking up prices does not help and your customers are noticing. “Doing the most good”… I think you need to revisit your company slogan and come back down to reality.

2022-03-02I recently went here on 2/28 to use up a store credit before it expired. The cashier LAURA, was the most unpleasant person ever and I left this store shaking from the lack of respect and empathy in the customer service. I went up to the cash wrap and said hi (she didn’t say it back) started taking my items off of the hanger for her and nicely putting the hangers on the counter. LAURA, the cashier, first off huffed and puffed when she looked at the jewelry I got from the counter saying “she didn’t tell you prices on these!?” (The counter says all unmarked items are 4 dollars, which I pointed to and questionably said out loud.) This woman, LAURA, had the worst attitude before I even got to her. This beginning interaction immediately made me feel uncomfortable, but it just got worse. At the end of the transaction, after she aggressively threw my stuff into a bag, she tells me the total and I tell her about the store credit coupon I have. She then huffs and puffs AGAIN saying “I needed this at the beginning of the transaction” (like I’m supposed to know?!? It’s not posted anywhere and obviously I don’t work there to know this.) I told her I didn’t know that and that I don’t have a Salvation Army near me (I drive out to visit from the lakeshore!) she shouldn’t have made me feel like bad about using my store credit. I don’t even trust that she gave me the correct amount off my order but who cares now! I left the store shaking in rage because of how poorly I was treated… and I work in retail customer service, I know what good service is. So GOD FORBID ANYONE HAS TO INTERACT WITH LAURA. She should retire already if she’s so miserable at her job. And to management: Teach your employees to treat people with respect, especially since you work for a non-profit organization. I feel robbed from spending my hard earned money there because of how I was treated. It’s just wrong. Treat people with dignity.

2022-05-22Horrible! Store manager is unappreciative for the lack of better words. Pulled in to the donation drive at 5:02 pm to find her standing in the parking lot fraternizing with a comrade through a car window. Door open, not a single car behind me, with 2 bags for donations. Told, sorry come back, or donate to the Human Society Bin across the street. Seriously? The time it took to say NO, the bags could have been inside. With Gas prices being 5.00 a gallon and 20 miles one way to be turned away with free items, the community is better served putting their donations in a garbage receptacle than to donate to a community center that sees two minutes as an inconvenience. Utterly, no appreciation for those that drive their revenue, pay their pay checks and keep operations going. Word to the wise, find another center that cares more about those that serve over self interests to chat w a friend with an open door!!

2022-05-03Ridiculous, it was pouring rain and there was four car in line the poor people outside were getting soaked so I decided to go ahead and go past the line to donate so the men would not have to get wet and walk the items and myself they refuse to take my items and told me to get back in line. Needless to say they did not get my donation and took it to my local church where they gladly except it. There’s a church in Brighton Church of Christ off of Rickett Road they will gladly take your items and give them to the community rather than selling for a profit. I would encourage anyone in Livingston County today items of use tothat location

2022-02-12I just went to the salvation army in Brighton to look for jeans. All the dressing rooms are once again closed. The reason behind this is that they dont have enough staff to keep up with them. Which I can understand. And apparently they are extending their return policy from 24 hours to 3 days. Which is still excessively restrictive, but I can accept that. So if you purchase clothing and it doesnt fit, you can still return it. What I cant get on board with, is them not allowing you to try on clothing and then keeping your money when you do return it by only giving you store credit! If I wanted to make simply make a donation, I would!

2022-03-17Came by to donate. The old guys working in the back TORE OPEN on the SIDES of half of my bags and told me nah can’t take ‘em ! Rude! Now I have to re bag them all to get them out of my car!! 😡😡😡😡 So apparently they don’t accept kids clothing and school supplies or house hold supplies. 👎🏻
