The Villager Pub in other cities:
The service was extremely slow. When my family received our food, it was cold. The waitress brought me the wrong order and I had to wait so long for my food that we ended up paying and leaving before it arrived. The waitress was incredibly rude and never apologized for her error. We will not be coming back here again!
Situated on the main street in the quaint little town of Charlevoix in Upstate Michigan, this pub fare restaurant has a very inviting look. If you get a table by the window you can see the marina and Lake Charlevoix which empties itself into Lake Michigan.Like most restaurants in Michigan, this one too has a good selection of craft beers. Michigan, with its unending source of good water, seems to be the craft beer capital of this country. As you enter you see the big bar on your right with its many taps serving draught. This section seems to be bit noisy with most patrons preferring to be in this section. The adjoining section (where we sat) has more booths and is a bit more peaceful,The selection of food and beverages are good. We ordered the Black and Blue burger and the Fish Tacos. The portions were adequate to not overfill you. The presentation was good and the taste appealing.A great place to eat with your family or friends as the atmosphere here seems to cater to both groups equally well.
This local pub provided a family friendly lunch atmosphere. The food was delicious,. Seating for large groups (6+) is somewhat limited, but they will do their level best to accommodate. The service was friendly, stopped to check frequently, and made sure our service was excellent. The food stood out as being simple yet diverse in its options. It was a great place to go while walking through Charlevoix.
Arrived late on a cold Sunday evening. They were quite busy but seated is at a cozy both immediately. I had the broiled Blackened whitefish and my better half had the fried whitefish. Both dinner to perfection. This is the first place we have eaten at in Charlevoix and it was fantastic. Well be back!
Sunday evening, not too crowded. Cant see sitting outside near the noisy traffic and people walking dogs past your food. Inside the bar side was noisy too but the north seating area inside was nice and cozy. Food was great, good portions. Good selection of Michigan beers on tap.
I must have been there on an off day considering other reviews.Ordered the whitefish sandwich. A 3x4 tail end of the filet, soggy bun a small bit of lettuce and a handful of broken chips $14. Was buying my friend a birthday lunch. She had the same plate. Extra order of onion rings was very good. Add 2 soft drinks and youve got yourself a $50 lunch. Very disappointed.
The Chicken pot pie (home.made) was excellent. Betsy the bartender was friendly as well as professional. Clarissa the hosted was gracious and welcoming.I cam back friday afternoon for a.cup of soup home-made chicken.noodle tasty but tepid (sadly). I will come again but lunch was just ok.
Amanda and Lindsey are fantastic. They’re very nice and on top of everything, and very attentive. We had our drinks refilled when we needed them and the food was delicious! I’m not in Charlevoix very often but I come here whenever I am.All of the kitchen and serving staff are dedicated workers that work 6 days a week making sure that an already busy restaurant runs smoothly during a time where everything is short staffed. This place is great and highly recommended.
Will never return. Many of our families use to frequent here. I WILL tell others to avoid as well. Will not be cussed out, in front of other patrons, by owner/manager (whoever the tall guy is). We were going to eat a couple of sinners and get a couple to go. Said he couldnt allow carry out due to short staff. But if we.sat down it would only take 10 minutes to get five orders served (such a double standard). Although six waitresses were sitting, laughing, and rolling silverware. We also stopped him from firing the hostess because he assumed she told us to order all carry out. Other customers were discussing how rude he was. On the way out, even some of the staff were saying how bad he is to work for. No wonder hes needing more staff. Never underestimate your customer. Especially this one. The influence we have is unprecedented. Good day.
During Covid pandemic we noticed during our lunch that the glass of water one of us were drinking out of had lipstick on it, I asked to speak with a manager about it. Manager came over (without any mask on) and wanted to know what I wanted. I showed him the cup and he said what do you want me to do about it? I asked him what he thinks he should do about it and he stormed away and said get you a new glass of water came back and slammed it on our table and walked away calling me an a-hole, waitress said his name is Terry and sometimes hes mean and sometimes hes notSo go ahead and take youre chances here
Im guessing the menu prices are based on location, because they are definitely not based on quality. Probably one of the worst dining experiences our family has had in years. Two of us ordered the $18 fish and chips which had absolutely no flavor and the fish was chewy versus flakey. My plate had less than 10 fries under the fish. The fries are just standard frozen fries versus the delicious seasoned fries you expect from a pub. It honestly tasted worse than Long John Silvers. My wife and daughter split the nacho supreme which we ended up getting taken off our bill because the chips were so stale they couldnt even eat them! To top it all off, our service was horrible as well. The server didnt even stop back after dropping our food off to check on us. Think well stick to cooking our own food at the campsite next time were back in Charlevoix.
We found this place and thought it would be a unique little place to stop while we were in the area. The decor was cool but the food, honestly, was subpar. I got a whitefish sandwich and it was pretty much like any fish sandwich I could get anywhere, nothing special. My boyfriend got the pulled pork and he would have been better off buying the pre-made stuff from the local grocery. The cheese curds were amazing though and all the food came out super fast. So if youre looking for a quick bite and not knock your socks off food, go here. Otherwise Id check out any other restaurants in the area.
Super busy so none of us wanted to make an issue. And the waitresses were nice. But ordered a taco salad.. shell was super soft and had very little meat, the dill pickles were fine. And friends olive burgers were not the best eaither. We were disappointed because we had heard good things and payed a good amount of money.. not sure if it was just them being super busy.. but not sure if we will go back or not.
Food was average. My daughter ordered the Caesar salad and we both couldn’t tolerate the dressing, it was terrible. Felt very uncomfortable as another reviewer posted, 5 waitresses just standing around and at the nearby table. The place could be cleaned, no need for the staff to sit and stare at the patrons. Would definitely try a different restaurant if we return to the area.
Kind of a bait and switch. Walked into the bar side. Look like fun atmosphere, then was seated over on Bill Knapps side. They were busy and we had to be seated next door. Wanted a few drinks but where we were seated, took the wind out of our sail for drinking. Had nachos and they were not good. Waaayyyy to much refried beans on them. Not impressed with this place at all
They added outdoor seating during the pandemic, which I very much appreciated. The service was very quick and friendly. Our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and was there as soon as we finished eating to clear plates away and bring out our bill. The chicken salad was phenomenal, and the italian sausage soup was very good. Ill definitely be visiting again next time I am in the area!
Went there for lunch after we were ignored for twenty minutes at another pub down the street. We were greeted, seated and served by a very nice server. The food came out quickly and my Ruben was delicious as was my wifes taco salad according to her. Service was great which made for an overall great experience. Very good work during a challenging time.
Do not get the Perch! $24 for the dinner; the fish had scales and the batter was not cooked. I did not send back because it had already taken an HOUR to get any food to our table and really did not want anything else. Just do yourself a favor and skip this place all together.
Ill need to give this establishment two ratings in one. 5 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. The food was fabulous! I had the fish and chips and my wife had the fish sandwich. Our server, Carrie B (210) was far from fabulous. It started when she came to our table, to take our order, without a mask stating that she just got to work and hadnt had time to put it on yet. She returns, minutes later, with my cup of chowder and still has no mask on. When she delivered the meals, she was finally masked. She was always talking to someone while the other servers bused tables and carried dirty dishes to the back. We tried to wave her down on several occasions before she saw us and came to see what we needed, then went back to talking to another server. We finished our meal with empty drink glasses (we were drinking water) because she never came back to check on us. Thank goodness another table was seated next to us because it brought attention to the fact that we were done with our meal. She brought our check and laid it next to my empty drink glass and still never offered a refill. We paid our tab and she went back to talking to another server.
🍁🍂We stopped here to have a quick meal on our way north to see the fall colors. Our meal was delicious even though it was a BLT with chips & pickels with Hot Tea. The bacon was cooked to my liking and wasnt skimpy with pieces on my sandwich. The e lettuce & tomatoes were fresh as well. I got also to choose from different flavors of tea also. Husband had a turkey sandwich and said it was good as well. He loved the coffee to. Nice place, good service and quick. 👍🧡
Not bad. Not great. It was good pub food. The wife and I both ordered sweet potato fries. Mine came out vibrant orange color and piping hot. Hers were a dark brown color and luke warm. Dont know why the quality of the same food was so vastly different at the same table.
Tasty bar food! Had a cheeseburger and onion rings. Burger was moist and flavorful. The onion rings were the bomb!! The onions were tender when you bit them and you got just what you bit. You did not get the whole ring of onion when you took a bite. We shared a bowl of their soup of the day - chicken apple curry. Weird combination but it was good.
An absolute embarrassment to Charlevoix. Before I begin, I will disclose this experience was on July 5th (observed holiday.)Since moving to Northern Michigan, the restaurant scene has simply blown my mind, until today. As stated, its a holiday, and town is very busy, but that isnt an excuse. Charlevoixs bread and butter is tourism and thats how we survive here. It started with a line down the sidewalk to check in with the hostess. I fully expected this and it isnt an issue. After the roughly ten minute line to get our name on the list, we asked the hostess for an ETA on a table. Her response was a very stressed out no idea..cant even say. At first I was irritated that we didnt get a time even if it was a drastic guess. But I later felt for her.Once called to be seated, the manager (or owner, not sure, but he clearly had authority in the pub) took us inside. A few steps in a couple was walking out an he looks at us and says Get out of their way, as if we dont have eyes or decency. We got to the table and he frisbees our menus on the table and says there ya go. Wow.We waited about 10 minutes to get our drink order taken, but the waitress stopped and said she would be with us in a few minutes, so no real issue. We tried to place our food order at the same time and she said she wasnt allowed to yet because of other tables, so we waited another 15 minutes to order. After 25 minutes weve finally gotten drinks and ordered. The same manager (or owner?,) is storming around the floor being an absolute a**hole to his employees. Belittling a busser over trash bags, yelling at waitresses for small issues all in front of guests. Absolutely disgusting. Theres a time and place to correct your staff, and public embarrassment is never the way. I felt so bad for them. Do you really not realize there are literally thousands of restaurants DYING for staff, and youre blessed with these people working for you as you treat them like garbage.. they can and should leave your establishment and get a job anywhere else.We waited nearly exactly two hours for our lunch. We came in at 1pm, and got our food after 3. After waiting hours, our sides were all cold and my burger was a burnt frozen patty on a stale, hard bun.Very long story short, I was embarrassed to take my in-laws to Charlevoix and have this happen. I will never recommend this place to anyone who asks. And the two stars are simply for your staff who put up with garbage leadership and run their tails off, and nothing more.
A really great place and great work environment Id say everyone is really friendly really nice seating with outdoor dining it is popular so often very busyAs far as the menu its inconsistent Id give it 3 stars there are good dishes but not all are great the entree salad is really nice and good but not the side salads however hands down the best fish Ive ever had
My husband ordered the burger. He was not asked how he wanted it cooked. The burger was dry and tasteless. The burger garnish was a sliver of onion, and a piece of wilted lettuce, the lettuce also was rotting on one end. My husband had to ask for a slice of tomato. I had blackened whitefish tacos, they had no flavor. The fish chowder we had was better. My husband would have sent his burger back, but the waitress never came back ( we were sitting outside) so my husband finally just ate it. The waitress came back when we were ready to leave, told the waitress it was good and asked it she would eat lettuce that looked like that? She said yes, I probably would. I wouldnt eat there again
One of the best things about the Pub is consistency. They keep a consistent menu, which means you can come back time and time again for your favorites. This place runs like a well oiled machine and the service is fast and friendly. Excellent fried fish, amazing pot pies, and interesting things like fried pickles.
My husband and I stopped here for dinner while staying in Charlevoix. When you walk in there’s a bar area and some tables. That room seemed to have some character and a little life in it. The second dining room they brought us to was nothing that great to look at. However, all the decor issues were forgotten when we ordered the fish and chips. I got the cod and my husband ordered the whitefish. Both plates arrived to us piping hot and the fish and fries were very crisp. Be aware, they do leave the skin on the whitefish fillets when the batter and fry them. It was different, I didn’t really care for the skin left on so we ended up picking it off. The fish itself was dense, yet flaky and very fresh. I’d go back again for the fish and chips!
UPDATE: I very much appreciate the response from the Villager, and understand that the market has changed. Just more unfortunate fallout from COVID.Prices have skyrocketed! 3-pc whitefish dinner used to be $14.50. In one year, it’s gone up to $23. Disappointing. That’s more expensive than fish & chips at the Weathervane!!
Always happy with the food and service at this classic Charlevoix restaurant. The food has always been great, especially the fish! No matter how busy they are, they have great service and are very courteous to their guests no matter if youre a first time visitor or a regular.
Prime Rib special on Feb 5 was AWFUL. We paid $25 a person in our party of 4 for a piece of meat that was over salted and dry. Tried reaching out to the establishment in an email and have been blatantly ingored. I tried to show grace in these crazy times but they didnt care. Food for thought. DO NOT GO THERE FOR THE PRIME RIB.
Our waitress was so sweet then we had a question for the manager he came over with such attitude and no mask on! He was so rude and very very unprofessional! We talked to several staff and they said he is always very Mean!! On our way out he was cussing at us so bad! We had a total of 6 young children with us!!! The restaurant had several customer’s hear him cussing at us while we walked out the building! Absolutely ridiculous! And so gross that he was walking around the whole place with no mask on and the sanitation of cleaning the tables was not good either!! I would not recommend supporting Terry!! Such a rude man!
Went inside, place isnt respecting the six feet distance (all tables are being used), we stayed outside, it took a while to receive the food. We both ordered the Villager burger, VERY blend, tastless and ingredients looked old. Fries were probably fried using a VERY old oil, you could taste it. Very disappointed because it is in a prime location but really lacks flavor & quality. The server that took care of us was nice, though. Love Charlevoix, but wont be coming back to this pub.
Loved the restaurant. My girlfriend got the onion rings and a wet burrito, she said it was great. I got the hot chicken wing. The flavor was good but the wings could have been more crispy and hot. Service could have been better. I would like to stop back again though.
The Villager Pub is always our go to restaurant for our family. The menu has a large variety of items which makes it easy for everyone to find what they are looking for. My personal favorite is the Thursday special- the potpie....it is delicious! I am also very happy with how the restaurant is dealing with the COVID-19 restrictions. Keep up the great work!
We thought thered be a wait on Memorial Day weekend, but the three of us got right in. The place was busy, but wait staff was attentive. Drink menu was varied and satisfying (I had Hard Red - cherry hard cider). My whitefish tacos were very tasty, and my wifes broiled whitefish was excellent, but my sisters burger was dry. Atmosphere was top-notch - lots of old photos on the walls, auto memorabilia, huge mural on the back wall featuring a 57 Bel Air. Overall a very pleasant experience.
The wait staff was nice, the management was horrible. We had an issue with the cleanliness of our order. We asked for the manger, “Terry”. Terry shouted at us for bringing up the issue. No apologies, we were shamed and shouted at for bringing it to his attention. There are a lot of other great options in the city to choose from, unfortunately this was not one of them.
We have come here for years, with some long gaps of time between visits at times.Came in this last November and had the white fish and it was good, with a massive pile if fries. My wifes meal was sub par. And said, not the same food.Came in last night for a 2nd try, and it was chicken pot pie night. We got the pie and cod.Pot pie had 4, 1/2 inches size pieces of chicken in it and massive amounts of carrots. I had a taste of it and it was a tasteless dish, nothing like in years gone by.My cod, when cut open drained oil, and was overly battered. the cod did taste ok, but not great. More oil soaked batter than fish. Large portion of cod, small portion of fries. What happened to this, once great place to eat.Maybe just a bad night for the cook, but I doubt it, some one is scrimping on the ingredients and seasonings.
They tout their fresh caught fish on the menu and serve the fish are least two ways: broiled and fried. I ordered the friend whitefish dinner and was disappointed to find the skin was still on the fish beneath the batter. I had to scrape away the batter and skin to be able to eat the fish. They were very busy at the time as it was Venetian Festival and the service was relatively quick for how packed the place was.
Ended up eating here two days in a row.Great food and great service on both occasions. Nachos and onion rings on day one. Both were ample portioned. Sandwiches and burgers the next day. Which were also portioned for a hungry appetite. Clean restrooms for little ones is always an appreciated extra.Well be back!
I ordered the taco salad and there was hardly no beef in it with a massive amount of gross lettuce. My boyfriends order came out wrong. Every time I eat out here Im constantly reminded why it takes me years to go back. The bathroom was gross and needs to be updated, nails need to be removed from the stall walls so someone doesnt get poked. Not pleased and wish we would of went somewhere else. Only reason for the 2 star is the fact that our waiter was very friendly.
My husband and I moved to this area last fall and have been trying all the local hot spots and HOT SPOT this is.... GREAT service including suggestions on other great spots in Charlevoix. Very friendly staff, terrific views and a fabulous burger. This just may be voted our Monday night date spot, as not a crumb was missed on our plates!
Great food and service. Pub style menu with homemade soups, tasty sandwiches, fish and broasted chicken (a pressure cooked, deep fried method that keeps the chicken more moist and less greasy -in case you dont already know). It has a nice bar with a good selection of beers and other refreshments.
AVOID THIS PLACE.After being served a drink in a dirty glass with someone elses lipstick on it during the COVID19 pandemic, we asked to speak to a manager. Keep in mind we had a party of 13 people who were all ordering meals and the adults were ordering drinks as well. We spent a lot of money there. We werent looking for a freebie, just thought it was important for management to know that with a pandemic going on perhaps they should be a bit more careful with their dish washing. The owner Terry came over to the table and was 100% completely unprofessional in how he handled the situation. He approached the table agressively, looking for a confrontation. He began swearing (we had young children in our party) and he proceeded to insult and cuss at multiple people at our table.I have never once seen such unprofessional behavior in a restaurant. I was blown away by how the owner of this restaurant acted and treated us. Please avoid this place at all costs. There are dozens of better places to eat in Charlevoix, support the ones which are owned by actual professionals whom respect their patrons.
The waitress we had was very good, cant say that the other waitress was - she was rude. Our waitress was attentive and very nice. Now the food was not good at all. Broasted chicken was deep fried and tasted like it had been warmed up VERY greasy. The perch tasted more like pollack. Do not recommend at all. Extremely pricey. Reheated French fries.
Were from out of town and thought we would go out for some good food and drinks. The drinks were great (long island and bud bottle), but our server was horrible. Even being seated, he threw the menus down and said there ya go . We ordered a wet burrito, and med/rare burger. Burger was well done and they made sure it was taken care of, but that was after i finally flagged her down (was not busy whatsoever) again and told her and she made me show her and comped. She never once asked if we needed refills or another drink, also had to flag her down for that. Every, single time. Burrito was not remotely up to par. Im a serve
We have been going to this restaurant for years every time our family comes up to our lake house. We even used the restaurant for food at our rehearsal dinner for our wedding last summer. It is a family tradition to get the food and take it to watch the sunset on the beach. This year’s visit has completely changed my mind. After arriving home with our food we found we had not received what we had ordered. We made the 20 minute drive back to the restaurant to exchange it for what we originally ordered to which we were met with one of the rudest MANAGERS I have ever met. Instead of apologizing she proceeded to tell me I was wrong and that we had made the mistake. I asked her to help us get what we wanted. When she brought us the food we asked for, I wanted to just double check and make sure we were indeed getting the correct food so we wouldn’t have to make another 40 minute round trip. In a sassy and demeaning tone the MANAGER said “I already checked.” I’m sorry...you already made me come back one time, said I was wrong, and didn’t take any responsibility for the mistake YOU made...I’m going to make sure you got it right this time! I hope there is some new management next year.
Awesome broiled whitefish and fried walleye. My wife and I enjoyed everything about our visit to this restaurant while vacationing in Charlevois, Michigan in June if 2017. The waitstaff was on the ball with regards to the drinks, the food, and recommendations for further places of interest for us to visit. Reasonably priced and will definitely be back on our next visit to the area!
In the past have gone in and the food has been pretty good to okay got food there on April 21st 2021 and it was absolutely the worst Ive had from anywhere in a long time we got a Reuben and fries and that was awful and got a chicken dinner it was broasted chicken way over cooked could hardly eat it and there was like no meat hardly on the chicken and all you could taste was the fryer Grease french fries were soggy and cold the biscuit what is old the only thing good in the whole thing was the coleslaw very disappointing
My wife got the chicken salad and the chicken was frozen and rubbery. Fish tacos were definitely pre frozen as well which is sad because this restaurant is located right by the water. Waitress was really nice and the overall atmosphere was OK but kinda dingy. I dont think Id eat here again.
I have eaten at the Villager more times than I can count over the last 30 years, but this last time was the most surprising. My wife and I had run into Terry that morning, and told him that we were going to see him at his restaurant that very night, and mentioned to him that we could not wait to have his amazing fried Zucchini. He told us that he only has it during the summer months. We were disappointed, but that we would see him later that evening. Well, when we arrived and sat down, over walked Terry with a heaping plate of fried Zucchini! We couldnt believe our eyes. He had gone over to the grocery store after he saw us that morning, and bought some just to serve us! What a great way to show customer support, to go completely out of his way to do something like that for a customer.. Just amazing!
Went there on a Saturday afternoon in early March. The fried food was good and staff was friendly. The rest of the food must have been leftovers from at least the day before and was disappointing for the price we paid. Its probably great in the summer when they are busier.
You cant go to Charlevoix and not stop in the Villager Pub best ever, love this place been going here for over 30 years and it always gets better, thanks Terry. Its extremely clean, service is outstanding, excellent atmosphere and the food is over the top. one of my absolute favorite places to go
Great local bar and restaurant in Charlevoix! It can get pretty crowded during the tourist season - especially during event weekends. Its worth getting in early and getting a spot as they have great fish! A bustling and happy environment its definitely one of the best spots to eat in Charlevoix. Highly recommended!

2022-02-07We stopped in for a snack at the Villager Pub after checking out the ice & lighthouse. We shared a couple of apps, the wings, and mac and cheese bites. Both were tasty. Weve been at the Pub several times and usually sit on the bar side, but this time on the restaurant side. I have to say I enjoy the liveliness of the bar side more. The booths that have the divider to accommodate large groups are a good feature but not so much when the other side bumps the table a lot, making your side shake. Just lessons learned for our next stop while in Charlevoix. I wish I was hungry enough to have ordered the whitefish, which Ive had before and is delicious. The service and our server were great!

2022-06-27So excited to have fresh fish options that come right off the boats on Lake Michigan! All three of us ended up with the 2 piece whitefish meal after deliberating. Our server was exceptionally patient, professional, efficient and courteous. The other 2 enjoyed their adult beverages that I skipped as the driver. The photo is my plate with a bite of fish missing on the bottom left corner. The French fries are underneath the fish and coleslaw is in the cup on the upper right corner. Thanks Terry and your awesome establishment for feeding us year round👍🦈🧑🍳🍟

2021-11-12Excellent!!! Chicken pot pie and Villager Burger were very good, great taste and portions. Also tried three desserts, chocolate mousse, key lime pie, and raspberry creme brulee; ALL were excellent as well. Service was excellent as well. Definitely worth the visit when in Charlevoix.

2022-05-16Owner/manager & the host need to work on their customer service skills. Perhaps this is not the job for you any more!? The host and manager were mad at life. We were greeted as though we were inconveniencing them. Our food was just mediocre. You are short staffed and I understand that, but just a simple smile 😃 goes so far these days!! We have had great food and service here in the past. Something changed. Today you lost us as customers! 👋

2022-06-30I love this place. The food is great and there is a big variety of menu items. But it’s the staff that keeps us coming back. Everyone is so nice and friendly. They feel like family. ❤️😁

2022-06-25Service was super fast and friendly at 6 PM on a summer Saturday. Food was hot and good. Wet burrito was massive. The cod fish and chips were huge and fresh. And omg - the key lime pie. To die for. Highly recommend. We’ll be back.

2022-05-15Terrible service. Waitress was extremely rude and not attentive. Restaurant wasn’t busy and we waited 15 minutes before she even visited our table to take drink orders. A member of our group ordered a hamburger and asked for it to be well done. When the food arrived the burger was not well done. We brought it to the waitress attention and she got very snippy and very rudely said they only cook burgers one way here. Our group member politely said “you could have said that when I ordered it.” Waitress grabbed the plate and never said anything. Took forever for her to bring back the cooked burger. By that time everyone else had finished their food and were ready to go. Waitress the. Proceeded to argue with the group telling us how rude it was to ask for the burger to be cooked the way we wanted. Food was mediocre. Wouldn’t visit again.
