We were hesitant to go as weve been eating at its predecessor for ages. But were glad we went. Place was clean, menu had a little of everything and the service was great. Cat was new but took care of us like shed been there awhile. We each got a pizza and it was sooo good. Will be going back on our next visit to Alden.
I avoided them when they rebooted for many reasons. But we got take out about a month ago for the first time in years. It was surprisingly good. Repeat just the other day was equally satisfying. Again today we ordered and it is now consistently delicious in my opinion.I cant speak to in person dining, but I am really enjoying their food.
*this review is for the Alden bar and grill. Torch lake beer co brought them. I have never been to the new establishment *. I have been here several times since I vacation up North and never really had any problems. I do believe the prices are decent. The food is good. You can get in and out quickly if you want to. The servers I have had were decent. Not sure what others are expecting out of this place but I get what I pay for.
Okay. I just finished my food. A hamburger and fries well done. Just the way I asked for. My wife and were not very hungry so we split the meal. All we asked was to have the burger split. They split the whole plate into two separate orders. They gave a full serving of fries and coleslaw. Excellent. The burger, Mill House burger, was very tasty and juicy. Fries were perfect. I will definitely come back to this establishment again.
Great place for a good breakfast or lunch. The wraps and burgers are very tasty. I only go in on the off season so the service is top notch every time Ive been in. Very friendly and know what they are doing. Havent been in for dinner yet but I hear the prime rib is on point. Seems to be getting better every time Ive been in since the new management took over. Looking forward to what they have in store for the future. Ill be back.
The food is a little pricey, but it is worth it. We go once a week and each time I try something new and I have never been disappointed. The burgers are juicy and so good, the BLT with the garlic sauce...yummie!! The staff, you couldn’t ask for friendlier people. If you want good food, you gotta get it here!!!
Great Service, great food and drinks.I had stopped here with a friend on our way back to Bellaire from Traverse City, just for an appetizer and a quick drink. It was late, and there were only maybe a handful of other guests there. Our Server, Ryan was the absolute BEST. I have had her as my server once before when the place was PACKED; and I had great service on both occasions!
Dysfunctional service, uncomfortable chairs, flat beer, but decent food!Myself, and neighbors went up to what is now the Torch Lake Beer Company (AKA:Alden Bar) for dinner recently, and the change in ownership was obvious. We have been going up to the Alden Bar for years, and we’re usually a pretty loyal, local group, but things have changed, and not for the better.Gone is the popcorn machine for munchies, while you wait for your order.Gone is the John Cross Whitefish on Friday nights that was a huge draw for us locals.Gone as well, is the House Special Pizza, which if you didn’t order the fish, you probably got this.Gone is our favorite host, and general manager “Mike” who was always on top of everything, and was a huge part of the ambiance. The tables and chairs are all different, and much nicer to look at,but terribly uncomfortable to sit on.The chairs and tables are a dark hardwood, and the chairs have straight vertical backs. After ten minutes your butt is sore, and you sure can’t slouch to get comfortable....One of my neighbors thought maybe an optional whoopee cushion might be available on request? The waitress was well intentioned, but inattentive. When we first sat down, the waitress asked us for a drink order, and I asked for a large draft beer, the other people I was with were happy with just water. The water showed up quickly, then the waitress wanted to take our order.I asked what happened to my beer, and she looked totally startled....The beer was sitting over on the bar counter.I probably should have just left it there, because after the first sip, I could tell it was flat.Good and cold, but flat!We asked if they had a fish special on a Friday night, because it wasn’t on the menu, and she said they did....Great, why not put it on the menu? So, we asked what it was,and she said it was Cod,and you could choose either two pieces,or three,or you could get all you can eat.We asked how much it was,and she didn’t know. The waitress went away to find out,and then returned with the information. We all ordered the Cod,and along with it,I ordered the sweet potato fries.About twenty minutes later, the food showed up,and the fish was very good with a special kind of tartar sauce, that was very different from the average, but actually a pleasant change. The sweet potato fries never made it to my plate, and instead, there was just the regular fries. Not a big issue, but just part of the bigger picture of someone not paying attention.I don’t see us returning here for awhile until the new management gets their problems worked out,and as we left, we were all wondering the same thing:...Why do people “fix” what ain’t broke?Good luck to the new owners,I think you’re going to need it!
This was our second choice on a Saturday night because the other restaurant was closed for the season. There were not many of us in the restaurant. In fact 6 patrons total. Their special was prime rib which we took a chance on because they said it was the first time they ever offered it. It was excellent. The young man that waited on us did a great job. We will return next time were at our house up north.
The service was great! The food on the other hand was not. Paying $14 for a hamburger that was supposed to be cooked rare and include bacon came cooked well done ( I believe it was a frozen patty vs fresh) and minus the bacon....i chose sweet potato fries and got the stale kettle chips instead....the fries came after the fact and were good. The coffee was good. Kicker came when we all got sick....throwing up sick(the only thing we had in common was this meal) I guess I expected more for the price. Our local hosts were embarrassed....
Out for a Sunday drive and decided to stop here with the family. Service was awful, food, even worse. One of us ordered meatloaf and it tasted as if it sat in the fridge for days, and sliced and fried. Dried up. Waitress wasn’t too friendly and when I asked for Italian dressing for my Italian sub she said “It’s on there, that’s what’s dripping off.” Why say that? Just ask if I would like some. Husband ordered the fish basket. 2 tiny pieces of fish, that wouldn’t even fill up my 12 year old. We all feel like we could vomit now. 🤢Also, seen a waitress mixing a chocolate milk, and she pulled her mask down and opened the straw with her mouth and served it to a little boy.
We went here on July 23. It did not seem overly crowded. We ordered our food by 7:00. At 8:15, we still did not have our food. We were offered chips and salsa and told our food would be up soon. At 8:30 the table next to us, who ordered AFTER us, got their food and we STILL did not have our food. So, at 8:45, we left without ever getting our food. The beverage service was fine, we just NEVER got our food. A restaurant surely should be able to get food out in under an hour. All we ordered were 2 buffalo chicken wraps.
Food is great. Service is very very slow. We weren’t asked for our orders until an hour after we sat down. Spent 2.5 hours waiting for the waitress to come back and take orders, bring drink refills, and 20 minutes for the check. It was not busy. Again, the food is great but the service needs some work.
The name is a misnomer since they dont brew beer, though they said they will in the future. We went on a Friday night which happened to be their Fish Fry night, which we had. We only got 2 small pieces of fish, which were good, but not filling. So we ordered an extra platter to split. Service was good.
Visited today for lunch, and while the food was good the service was incredibly slow. We arrived at 1:30, drinks ordered (2 waters and 1 Coke) and recieved them promptly. We ordered 3 wraps, 2 west coast and one buffalo chicken with mac and cheese side. We didnt receive our food until 2:20. The waters were refilled, however the coke was not. Very disappointed in the service and timing of this establishment.
The food was greasy, soggy, and sad. The kicker is that we were given a container of dressing with an expired date written on it. (Yuck.) While the food itself deserves zero stars, Im upping this rating to two because our waitress was super nice and helpful. She was great. The food, not so much.
One person at our table ordered a chef salad, it said in the description of it that it was Romaine lettuce and it was iceberg. Not very good. Two had pizza and that was good. One had a Philly cheese steak sandwich and said it was good. Another one had the chicken sriacha (spelling?) It was not spicy at all. Service was good!
Service was friendly and they tried hard, but we had to ask for every little thing multiple times. No silverware. No ketchup and mustard. Wrong beers. The food was OK - nothing special, but no complaints . The sea shore fries were interesting, but only half of our party liked them. They are not like steak fries, the outside is starched to get very crispy, but the inside are so cooked, they are like mashed potatoes. If that appeals to you, theyll probably be the most interesting part of your meal.
Havent been here since it changed hands, but it wasnt great before. After reading the laundry list of negative reviews here, I have to wonder... why? Why, with this prime location and setup, is the management having such a hard time providing even mediocre service and food? Over priced food would be easier to stomach if it was at least great tasting and the service was exceptional. The chance to leave a good 1st impression for TLBC is fading fast...
Three strike rule applies here. While our breakfast was very tasty, it was very obvious this was no longer the AB. This is our first time here under new ownership. Heck we didnt even know the AB changed hands. Had we arrived for breakfast at our normal time between 7-8am, we would have gone elsewhere. But we arrived right at 9am and became curious why the restaurant was closed, I asked trusty Google for restaurant hours & was directed to the new bar name. Ok. The hours indicate they open at 9am but the doors were still locked. Strike One. The doors stayed locked until 9:15. Strike Two. As a restaurant, doors should be open no later than 8:59am and coffee should be ready to serve. The service was descent and food was good. So we will give it another try. Just not for breakfast since 9am is generally too late for us.
Best food around, great drinks and amazing customer service (Marla). Will be back again for sure. The pizza was awesome. We are from Lansing area and have been to 3 places in Charlevoix and Torch Lake area and diffiantly the best service and food weve gotten. Im thinking maybe lower reviews due to under staffed because we have absolutely nothing to complain about. Marla was a great bartender and made our visit worth coming back for. Best pizza around!
Waited for someone to seat us on a Saturday at 8pm. The restaurant was busy but not packed, beautiful evening in the high 70s, to be told the patio was closed. Seriously? We left and went to the dockside to enjoy the weather. Not driving 4 hours from downstate to pay to sit indoors when its only nice 3 months per year.
Started off being a great place and even liked server but became very unsettling as the group of women who were with us but different table and server got all their foods and drinks, ate, and paid for their service and we men at different table were still waiting on our orders. The place was no where near busy at the time and we could not understand why would it take and hour to prepare the food. Very dissatisfied.
First night of new menu 10/19/19 absolutely terrible. Nachos had no meat and they used cheese wiz! Buffalo dip was over powered with blue cheese. Only thing decent were the pretzel bites. The old Alden Bar and Grill menu was soooo much better. Wont go back unless they make some serious changes! Too much really good competition in the area.. very disappointed.. this place has a long way to go to come up to the standards of Red Mesa and Pearls hopefully they figure it out
From the name, we were surprised there were not many craft beers to choose from. Our server that afternoon was definitely tired or something, not very attentive or friendly. Had to ask for my hubbys beer which had been sitting on the bar, no refill was offered on my soda. I had a chicken wrap, it was decent but the majority of the wrap was lettuce and tomato. For $10.99 (I think) it was served with chips, a bit over priced in my opinion. Hubby had burger and fries. It was ok nothing great. Not sure well be back unfortunately.
Ive never stopped in here my parents go all the time. We got there at 10:30am and my mother who is a little older insisted on having french fries. The fryer wasnt on but the young man was so nice to her and so sweet and and said well get that right on and get those out for you any did in like 5 or 10 minutes which was awesome! Sometimes its just the little things.
Good food, service is a tad slow. This is the second time I have been to the newly named, newly owned location. One menu item is no longer available - the most delicious impossible burger. (I hope they come up with another vegetarian option). If you have time to relax and enjoy, this is the place for you!
Very rude! Sign said please wait to be seated so we waited but no one came and it was not busy a waitress walk right by us and didnt say anything so we figured maybe we are supposed to seat ourselves. We went to the patio because it was a little loud with the karaoke and then someone said to us if you want to be served the patio is closed no one will serve you out here. So we went inside and no one served us in there either. We left and went to Dockside......much better service
Menu selection was very limited, poor and over priced. For sandwiches one kind of hamburger, chicken wrap and Grill Cheese. Grill cheese $9.00, really. 3 selections for Entrées. White cheese on nachos??? Been going here 30+ years. High tops bad choice. Saw someone come in a wheel chair and people moved to high top so person in wheel chair had a table sit at. Needs improvement soon.
Place was much better when it was Alden bar.Very limited menu, food was mediocre and only one person we dealt with actually had a smile and friendly personality. We loved taking the boat to Alden and eating at the Alden bar but unfortunately we won’t be back. Friday night at 7 and only half full. Very disappointed
The service was absolutely horrible. Was greeted when we sat down by the bright blue haired girl and her profane mouth. However once we got our food we never heard from the bright blue haired girl again. The owner who showed up 30 minutes into our dining passed by numerous times and not once again were we ever checked on. It was anoter 15 minutes before he stopped and asked if we were ready for a check then yelled across the bar for her to bring it. During our dining the waitress was at the end of the bar talking to this guy that made sure the whole place could hear there trashy unprofessional conversation. The food was ok but not anywhere close to good enough for the over priced Cisco/Gordons quality. WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!
Really disappointed. Our waitress was awesome, but we waited about an hour for our food (which we never got), hearing other tables complain how their orders were wrong and their food was cold. Then we get told that theres another 10 minute wait. We ended up leaving and are really bummed we had a bad experience.
The service was awful. The bartender was very rude and demeaning to everyone. We ordered a Mac and 5 cheese Finn a nd veghinh burger. It took over and hour to get it. When we asked for drinks it was 15 or 20 minutes of they didnt forget to bring them. Worst experience I have ever had a anywhere. Would never go back!!!!
We didnt stay to eat. The hostess was wearing, what looked like pj pants and a tshirt. Limited menu.11.00 for a buger. Needs work on customer service. So sad. Its a great location. Im sure the tourist love it but not sure how the locals are going to keep the place running during the winter months. This is my opinion.
As we are new home owners on the lake (Torch) we have re-discovered the Alden Bar and Grill. Although my wife enjoyed the bar many years ago, we are like new customers eagerly re-discovering how they are so great and affordable. As we are breakfast people, if you have not yet had their Steak and Eggs, breakfast, you better give it a go......the steak is fantastic and the price is incredibly affordable!!!!It is a fun place to eat and a good feeling, keeping our money in the community! Try it.....youll surely like it!Judi Marks and Douglas Colwell.
So all was good. ...staff was friendly, welcoming. ....played shuffle board, a couple beers, gonna order food, played some music..............then, 3:00 shift change. ...nothing short than being TERRORIZED TO LEAVE.........so we did.....absolutely uncalled for, appalling, deliberate, childish. ........our thoughts, leave before 3:00..........
Last night we had the most wonderful dining experience at Alden Bar our waitress was so very friendly, she was so on top of her customers even though the place was packed & lined out of the door. The food was the BEST the service was great I highly recommend trying Aldens, our waitress name was Jae make sure you ask for her you wont regret it
Im up here visiting my aunt and she recommended this place. We walk in to a waitress that tells us to sit anywhere. Looks like an interesting bar that has a very dinner feel to it. We order our food an instantly the waitress is rude. My aunt had asked a question about what comes in one of the food items. Rudely she said its right there while pointing continuously on the menu in front of here. Now, body language and the wha you say it is everything. She was extremely rude and I noticed it. My aunt told me that it was okay when I said she was really rude. I ignored it and thought that maybe she was stating the obvious. However, I then went to the bar a couple of minutes later to order the drink after several attempts to get the attention of the waitress. I asked her if they made a certain drink. Her response um...no then just left. I looked it up on my phone then started to show her when she came back. Her response youre going to have to wait a minute. Thats fine. She goes and helps the people down at the end of the bar and then starts to help tables again. Thats fine. She checks up on them and everything. Thats fine. Ten minutes later I look at my aunt. Shes gives the gesture like what the hell. I give it back. Shes comes back to the bar. Helps someone with their drink tap after asking if they want anything. Okay? I wait and shes just leaves again after he helps him. The man had asked if I was helped. I say no I wasnt. The customer even knew what was wrong. After this Im done. I go back to my table. Right before my waitress, the same lady behind the bar, asks one of the employees if they can wait tables. She was the only one doing something as five people were in the kitchen.A women comes out and starts to help people. Another waitress. Does our waitress come out and checks on us? No. She goes and helps someone at the bar...for a drink. Another waitress came around to check up on everything. We ask for the check. The original waitress plugs our check on the table and says have a good days then vanishes. Not once did check up on us while she did to the other tables. The overall message is that the service was terrible. One of the worst Ive seen in over ten years. Thats saying something. I understand that it was busy. I work in a place thats always extremely busy. I understand they no one was helping. She was the only one on the floor. All the employees looked like they werent doing much, expect her. However, the one rule of work industry is to not take it out on the costumers. Especially ones who arent being rude. We just wanted a good meal...and we actually got it. The food was absolutely amazing. I got lobster Mac & cheese. My aunt got fish and fries with thes jalapeño poppers. She loved them both and I loved the poppers. Food was great. Derived was terrible. Now the service doesnt ultimately define a restaurant experience. However, it does if the service doesnt even hit a fifth of the standard. No joke or exaggeration , it was probably thee worse service experience or one of thee worse. Seemed like the workers were mad at each other, the waitress was rude, and she was very biased toward a our table. However, the food and speed of the food wa great. Top notch. The sad this is that the server might have been the manager. I tried to look up the name on my receipt. It said manager next to server. Wow, so you couldnt get your own employees to help and you took it on us. It was honestly pathetic. A manager could act like this is mind boggling. Managers would be fired if this happened at our place. Someone need to teach her some customer service or needs to replace her. If she wasnt the manager, she needs to be fired. If she wasnt the manager, then Ill describe her. Tall, blonde hair, and red shirt.Overall, I didnt hate the place. The food was great and came in a reasonable time. However, the service was horroable and the server was extremely rude to us. 1/5 star because the service wasnt even expectable for an animal.
Good afternoon,My wife and I and our grandson tried to have dinner there July 10Tried being the operative wordOur server who rather than try to solve the multitude of problems that occurred replied with don’t get mad at me it’s my 3rd dayThere were people leaving who were angry at not being approached after 20 minutes after being seated but we figured they must have just been grumpy. We should have taken our clue from them. While we got our drinks right away and placed our order - it took a bout 45 minutes to get our foodThen 2 of the three orders were wrong. In addition, The waitress dropped our grandsons chicken on the floor while delivering it to our table - hey here is and idea - get the wait staff some trays so they can safely carry the food!My wife’s sweet potato fries were burned - mostly black. They did not bring out the fries that were supposed to come with our grandsons kid mealAll three of us ate at different times due to these mistakes. When my wife approached the manager he immediately got defensive and offered nothing but excuses that he was down two people and reiterated it was our waitresses third day. No I am sorry for the delay, just excuses.I found it ironic that the manager was walking around apologizing to many people for what appeared to be a very bad day - he never once came over to us. A mistake that could have for a little bit of effort salvaged a pretty lousy experienceRead the online reviews - horrible service is mentioned numerous timesBTW - I have had the Alden Burger many times in my life and in the past yearI have been coming to the Alden Bar since the 1960sThis time my Alden Burger was dry since it sat so long on the warming rack. This was a team failure. You should not put a 3 day old rookie on the hot seat as was done last night.Go to Dockside, Shorts and the Riviera. It was sad to see the AB deliver such a lousy effort
I really cant say whether I actually hated this place being that the staff tried to tell us that they were closed, yet proceeded to grant entry to many others. We overheard a waitress ask the bartender if they were still open....his response, We just dont want the tourists with children in here. We are not tourists but rather actually locals, nor were we toting children. We simply thought that it might be fun to grab a couple of beers while waiting for fireworks traffic to clear. Apparently, this place does not need tourists money ( perhaps it was a friends-only party??). Last I checked, my money is just as green as anyone elses and this place just lost the opportunity to gain any regular business or references from me.... someone who has worked in the food service industry for many, many years!
Best to avoid. Pizza edges were black. Not brown. Server said that it isnt burnt and normal. Bottom burnt. Again, normal. She said they will make a new one. Cook comes over to the kitchen door and stares at me lol. Ok, there was no way Im having that moron make me another pizza haha. This isnt the first time we have had issues here. Went down the street further towards Rapid City to Blue Water Bistro and had one of the best pizzas we have ever had.
When we got there they were rude right away, no hello, nobody to seat us and when we decided to sit on the patio the waitress said if you want to be served dont sit out here, the patio is closed. So we went inside and sat at a table and waited for 10min with no service so we left. We were visitors during the Alden Days and this was not a good experience.
Thank you so much to all the crew that accomodated our family yesterday following my moms burial. We showed up as a very large group unannounced and you all graciously welcomed us and rocked it out!!! We have decades of memories at AB and it was so fitting to end the weekend there. Thanks again!!
Didn’t eat anything service was so bad and slow had a mixed drink server had no idea about the drink when she returned to the table with the drink she complained about the bartender wasn’t thrilled about having to make the drink (it wasn’t anything that required a blender or anything just mixing) then when my husband went in and paid our receipt had written on it old couple on patio (we were the only ones on the patio) I may be old but not that old and I don’t need some incompetent server reminding me
Im from Chicago we know how to do.pizza in chicago .... after being in Michigan for 20 years I have only found 2 places that does pizza as well as Chicago. One is in the middle of downtown detroit. The other is Alden bar. I if course order the one with everything. Amazing amazing !!!
Sat at bar and it was obvious immediately that we were an inconvenience to Theresa. When we asked to order food she said she didnt have time. Maybe read the sign above bar that says Food, liquor and lottery in that order. Busy making drinks but complained about that too. Maybe a differ career would be more suited for her. NEVER AGAIN

2022-05-28Good service, and clean place. Most of the food was good, but I found an inaccuracy in the menu that is hard to overlook. I ordered a Caesar side salad, and the menu says that it has romaine lettuce. Infact all of the salads say romaine lettuce except the spinach salad. What I got was iceberg lettuce which is much lower in quality and flavor. If I had known it was going to be iceberg lettuce, I would have ordered something different. I also got a burger (great flavor, but super heavy/greasy) with chips. The chips are home made which is unique and nice, but very little seasoning or salt was stuck to them. It is fairly obvious that the chips were not salted as soon as they came out of the fryer which leads to crunchy but bland chips. If its not possible to salt the chips straight out of the fryer, it would be amazing to see the Alden mill (same place they get miracle blend seasoning from) garlic chip dip featured as an option. We had the pretzel bites as an appetizer and really liked those.

2022-03-24I treated my cousins to dinner. I had never ate there before and we were starving. Our waitress was fabulous and the food was delicious and prepared to perfection. There was a young family who came in after us. It was so nice to see the young boys get up and play pool. There is not a lot of fun family places around anymore. So it was a pleasure to dine in this beautiful clean family friendly environment.

2022-06-08My daughter and I had a wonderful lunch!!! I can’t wait to come back and have a burger! They look amazing!!! We had the artichoke dip and nachos. We enjoyed them both but the nachos needed more meat and cheddar cheese. I love nachos covered with melted, golden brown cheese. 😆 Our waitress was so friendly and the place was spotless!!! We will definitely be back. Thank you!

2022-05-19Food was much better than last summer, but food delivery was very slow. The new interior using barn metal is very cold compared to the previous openness.

2018-01-15I had a beer (25oz) and the artichoke spinach dip. What you would expect. The beer was a good price. Staff was excellent, good view, and bar games, dancing, karoake, on different nights. Sounds like a fun place.

2022-05-07Decent burger and fries and a nice tap selection. I was pleased.
