Comment: On 5/31/2024 after I was done with the truck rental and dropped it back off to the 6th and Gilman St office in Berkeley,Ca. I realized after I had locked the truck up and put the key in the drop box. I realized I didn’t have my IPhone so my grandson called my cell number and we both can hear the phone ringing from inside of the truck. The store employees were already gone and the doors locked. So I went home and called the location and left a voicemail message informing them that I had left my phone inside of the truck and I’ll be back in the morning to get it. I did go back the very next morning around 7:30 am. I went to the rental office and inquired about my phone and that’s when the manager. Tells me he did receive my message but they didn’t find a phone. I found that extremely strange and dishonest of him and the staff to say they didn’t find it. Especially since the night before me and my grandson heard the phone ringing from inside of the lock truck. No one else had access to the truck after it was locked up. Until the next morning when UHaul staff touched it. So I can and I will boldly say one of UHaul staff member found my phone and refused to give it back. I will never ever rent from this UHaul again the staff members are thieves and very dishonest. So please my fellow consumers please “BE AWARE”!!!!

Comment: I have been coming to this U-Haul location since 2020 and have always encountered the same U-Haul representative. I always have the same positive experience. He is attentive, answers all of my questions, and gets me out of the door with my equipment promptly. When the app fails to do what it needs to do, which is often, I can count on the representative at this location to take up the slack and process transactions as necessary. For example, I planned to return a truck after closing on the day before New Years Eve 2023, and thus was required to do so on the U-Haul app. It would not accept my photo of the odometer and truck. I started freaking out. I didnt know that the location was closed on New Years Eve (Google said they were open until 12 noon) and I drove to the location to make sure that the truck return was processed properly but no one was there! I was worried that I would be charged for extra time/days. I even contacted the U-Haul 1-800 number and they made a note in the system to tell the location to process my rental in a certain way. I didnt trust them. But the representative charged me exactly what I owed.I see negative reviews here. Honestly, I get it if you are not used to renting U-Hauls. But, Ive been renting U-Hauls for years from various locations across the country and this location does what I need it to do when I need it to do it (except for having handtrucks and dollies available). For example, one time, I reserved a truck for a late afternoon pickup and when I arrived the truck they expected to rent me had not returned. I had to go home and rethink my moving plans. But a few hours later, the location called and told me the person returned the truck that was slated for me. They held it for me until I came back. To me, that is good customer service. They could have rented it to someone else. But they held it for me.IDK. As I said, I get complaining if you dont rent U-Haul equipment often, but I do, and so I expect hiccups. This location had been good to me over the years.Now, I will warn folks that this location runs out of dollies and hand trucks quickly (hence the four stars), so the earlier you pick up your equipment, the better. But that has nothing to do with the representative there. He always posts a notice at the front desk to alert people of this issue before they hand over their drivers license and credit card. Since Ive been here many times the last few years I pretty much expect it. However, those who may be first-time visitors should be aware of this.Also, and this may go without saying, but the end of the month is crazy, so if you plan to move at the end of the month, get there early so you can make sure you secure the truck/van you reserved.Overall, I have had positive experiences at this U-Haul location.

Comment: This location consistently overcharges me every time! And the vehicles are disgusting on the inside. And they rent you the vehicle with less than a quarter tank of gas! i rented from them twice and both times theyve overcharged by hundreds of dollars. Last year, I had to send their customer service a photo of the vans odometer as proof of the amount of miles I drove, then they adjusted the price. This year, I did the same and instead of adjusting the price to what was promised before I picked up the rental, they told me a regional manager would call me. They never called! They just kept giving me the runaround. Also the vehicle was dirty and disgusting when I picked it up. They dont walk around the vehicle with you to check the condition of the vehicle. They just hand you the keys and send you on your way with a vehicle that wasnt cleaned between rentals, barely had any gas in the tank, and last year, the van had a flat tire before I even left the lot!And still they try to overcharge me every time! Ill never rent from them ever again.

The truck was good, but when picking up my truck around noon, they didnt honor their equipment reservation, instead just changing my order once I got there. Luckily I wasnt in too bad of a need of equipment, but could be a major hassle depending on your move. If you need equipment, they told me you have to come in right at opening hour, apparently before your reservationOtherwise, everything was fast, and again the truck was in good condition.

They checked it in today although I returned it at 4:30 while the location was still open and only drove 10 miles but they tried to charge me $99 extra claiming I drove over 130 miles. I filed a complaint and will see it through. They are unprofessional at this location and there is zero accountability and no formal check in process and inaccurate information is entered at the expense of the customer. Glad I took pics before my ride. Avoid this location

Comment: Today was my 2nd rental at this location and on both occasions had the pleasure of renting from Travis. This employee is probably one of your biggest assets in the entire state 😁 - whether y’all are aware or not. He’s genuine, a kind soul, professional, efficient, and incredibly knowledgeable (even about various things that they didn’t have to spend the time to help me with - they went above and beyond).I had a lot of questions, and random requests when I’ve rented and have gotten chatty in these isolating pandemic-times. Travis made it super easy for me, explained exactly what I asked for help with, managed multiple customers solo like a pro, and also was a pleasure to interact with. I would drive an extra hour to rent from this location, rather than the idea of dealing with a cranky, jerky “regular” employee that is much more common (and not just at Uhaul). As someone who stays in my tiny bubble, that’s saying a LOT, lol.I never wanted to use uhaul services EVER again after a horrendous experience in 2018, but with my only 2 experiences since being at the Gilman St location, and on both dates with Travis, I have changed my mind. Hire more people like them - or maybe they should be the one hiring/training…anyway - thank you for an excellent experience, in what was expected to be super stressful and unpleasant - absolutely saved the day - TWICE! I hope they’re appreciated and paid properly - they’re a gem.

Comment: The price estimate I received for 180 miles, and the final charges were totally different. When I called to express this, they said That was just an estimate. I just feel like the estimate was super misleading. Online it said for 180 miles I would be charged like 35 cent/mile. In the end, I ended up being charged .79 cents/mile for 100 miles and the 30 cents/mile for just the last 70 miles. To rent a van for 12 hours, I paid $152. Ill never rent from U-Haul again.

When I first called, they told me they had no one-way trucks available but that I should call on Monday because they expected some to come in over the weekend. I called on Monday and the local agent got my reservation started, but he ran into a problem and passed me to the central reservations office who got me set up and texted me the confirmation. When I arrived to pick up the truck nearly a week later, everything was all set for me. Drop off at my destination was already set up when I arrived so I just turned over the keys and I was done. I really cannot imagine it being easier.

Comment: Nice employees but poor stock of trailer accessories and they didnt know youre supposed to cross the safety chains when attaching trailer to tow vehicle. Its a good idea to read the U-Haul trailer guide and not assume the employees are 100% on the ball.

After my last U-Haul attempt (where I had to go to 3 places to get someone to meet my reservation) they were a breath of fresh air: I showed up and there was a truck.The guys who run the place seem pretty nice and theyre on top of things.

Comment: I would give a minus 5 if there is such an option.I made a reservation 3 days before my moving day, the night before the scheduled date they called me said they dont have the truck i wanted. I had to accept either reschedule to one day after or cancel the reservation.I called the customer service complained about it, they said they were sorry but they cant do anything. And I DO NOT qualify the so called reservation guaranteed $50 because the representative called me to cancel.This is the worst service experience i had ever had in this country and i would never suggest any of my friends use UHaul if their schedule is fixed

Comment: AVOID AT ALL COSTS!Not only is this location 30-60% overpriced compared to the Oakland and Richmond locations, but their service is terrible and they lie without any regret whatsoever; I have absolutely no idea how they got their previous 5 star reviews, but after my experience, I have a hunch theyre forged reviews. Here is my story:The saga began with my ordering moving supplies for in-store pickup. When I went to pick up the supplies later that day, the supplies were gone; the sales associated, Nicole, informed me that she had accidentally sold my supplies earlier in the day, and that if I wanted my supplies, I would have to drive to another store to pick them up. No apology, no offer to make it right, just a try another store. I asked her to call the location she recommended to see if they had the supplies: No, because they definitely have the supplies, just go there. I insisted she call and check: No, Im busy helping other customers. I was the only person in the store. So I leave and call the location she recommended; surprise surprise, no supplies. I had to drive all the way down to Oakland just to get the supplies I had bought from this store.I wish this were the end of the story; I wish that this was an isolated incident I could write off to a bad day. No such luck.When I had finished my move and went back to this store (with great trepidation) to sell back my unused boxes, Nicole and Jonathan informed me that we no longer buy back boxes. This, despite the promises on the side of the box, and their own promises when I bought the boxes in the first place. I told them I had confirmed that this store would buy back the boxes: not anymore. I asked to call their boss; they told me no, and that this refusal was coming straight from the owner, so you wouldnt get anything different. I had to drive 30 minutes out of town to a distribution center in order to sell back the boxes that this location refused.In short, this store is an overpriced den of duplicitous and incompetent thieves; do yourself a favor and just go to the Richmond Uhaul on 23rd street; they have been helpful, 50% cheaper, and always have honored their promises. AVOID THE GILMAN U--HAUL AT ALL COSTS!P.S. Found out that they are not accredited with the BBB when I went to file a complaint; if you need another reason to avoid this establishment, there it is.
