It didnt take long for the check-in or triage care. They gave me the wrong patient wristband during the triage check which can pose issues. Personally I think ER always take a long time, I was there for about 5 hours. The doctors were super nice and informative, just took a while to get to me (very normal). Nurses were also checking in when they could which was nice. 4/5 just for the tiny mistakes and long waiting time.
First visit to an E.R. a few weeks ago. They took vitals and I sat for 4 hours before a doctor saw me. Staff and doctors were fine. Nurse was nice and joked about us jousting with another patient as I was rolled out the room for a test. Beds are good, you get a tv (which helps with the wait for test results) and the nurse got me a menu when I told her I hadnt eaten in hours. My meal was surprisingly cheap. I walked out the next day.To those that treated me that night in the e.r...thank you.6-2-22:My most recent trip to the E.R. started on Thursday and ended on Tuesday, due to a Doctors mistake. On Friday, the nurse allowed me to order breakfast. The Doctor walked in and was shocked I had eaten. I was supposed to be on a food and beverage restriction for an upcoming test. The requirement was 8 hours. The Doctor admitted it was her fault that it wasnt put into the notes. I was told to not continue eating the chips or drink the water as they were trying to reschedule. The earliest date would be Tuesday and if I left, it would be AMA. If I tried to do it outpatient, it would be in July and that was unacceptable to them. I was upset and the nurse said she understood and apologized for the issue. She would have the Doctor contact me about it.I received a phone call where the Doctor claimed it was a scheduling issue. This was in direct contradiction to what Id been told earlier. When my visitor asked why I was being held over the weekend, she got the same response. The visitor already knew what had happened and had seen the bag of chips and water cup. I spent Thursday to Saturday in the E.R., then got a bed upstairs late Saturday. The interaction with this Doctor overshadowed ANY of the positives of the other staff. There was a nurse who kindly put me in a separate waiting room instead of back in the regular area. Other Doctors appeared to be caring and professional.Dont go here. The kind of person willing to do this is someone you dont want treating you or your family.
Once you get past the admitting staff, the doctors and nurses are kind, compassionate, and very sympathetic. However, COVID has given the health care industry permission to become a very toxic, hostile, and abusive environment. The hostility and abuse I witnessed (and experienced) by the admitting staff was heartbreaking and absolutely appalling. The amount of personal information I over heard because people were forced to shout over their masks was alarming. The last of compassion towards patients was heartbreaking. This is supposed to be the best hospital in the area, but Ill be doing my best not to return.
I dont normally complain about ERs because I know they can become suddenly backed up but I waited to over 4 hours and was only triaged and ended up leaving to go to another ER. I was shoved in a weird room where they told me that I was going to think I was forgotten. There were two other patients in terrible agony. And NO ONE so much as peaked through the window to make sure we were even alive. We were in a room with respiratory issues. I even asked if I should go to another ER. They didnt think so. When I was in the room it was FILTHY. I get that they were busy but a USED NEEDLE on the floor next to the broken gross chair I was put in is not normal. There was trash on the chairside table and it was just all around dirty everywhere I looked. They were also very rude me and others. I get it that they are stressed but maybe the hospital should start paying the staff more and hiring some people. There were tons of empty spaces but clearly not enough staff. For how much they charge for things the least could do is keep the patients updated and the hospital clean. Its a hospital for crying out loud. I just hope I didnt get contaminated by something surrounded by that filth.
HORRIFIC. Simply stated HORRIFIC. Incompetence at its lowest level lives in this ER. Not just 1X but 4X now - only reason I go is because my INFECTIOUS DISEASE DOC is affiliated with this horrible outfit. They OUTRIGHT IGNORED the pain in stomach that turned out 5 days later to be VERY BAD CDIFF infection. The nurse failed to document ANY of the problems and during my near 48 hour stay first time around, she kept saying Acid - so all the kooks followed her erroneous lead. Once admitted to the hospital, word I heard from EACH AND EVERY DOC EACH DAY, you cant believe ANYTHING going on in ER, they really dont have a CLUE. So, their level of INCOMPETENCY is even known throughout the HOSPITAL AND ENTIRE DOCTOR COMMUNITY yet they still keep functioning, amazingly, huh?So the last time, the doc, again, always some snot nosed PA, never a DOC, screaming at me about pain control and use of NSAIDS and literally, one finger touches my spine, wacks on my left knee cap (VERY PAINFUL) and I have NO REFLEX, then a push/pull test on each foot, notes that I barely can move left foot to me VERBALLY - then the documentation of the 2.5 minute visit says something totally different. Doesnt ACTUALLY AND FACTUALLY document what just happened in room. They assume that all people that are coming in are looking for a fix - and will treat each patient like a filthy drug addict. This is standard protocol going on in MI now. After the big push to back pat this entire crowd for COVID work, now theyve gotten BLOATED HEADS and abuse patients with an arrogance that is simply astounding.Go to St. Joes in Ypsi if you have a REAL NEED and NEED TO BE CORRECTLY TREATED.Sitting in an ER for nearly 36 hours w/ all food and water being with heald isnt even legal. Nonsensical and cruel, too. ALL DOCUMENTATION NOW NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED BY ANOTHER TEAM IN U of MI because of seriously flawed ER STAFF DOCUMENTATION. Once one of them chirps, the rest follow, you better just PRAY AND HOPE that they documented things CORRECTLY because if not, they all follow the INCORRECT INFO documented from first visit. Its a total clusterf*ck that they put patients in and not one person questions the others actions. The staff and physicians will tear each other apart, badmouth colleagues to patients, yet, when it comes down to it, they will neglect and ignore bad actors in their medical establishment because of liability.
Its absolutely disgusting that someone has to wait over 8 hours just to be seen. You would expect higher quality of patient care for such an esteemed hospital you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. And having patients in the waiting room with IVs is absolutely appalling.. If a 0 star rating was possible you would definitely be receiving a -5/5.
ER wait times are usually long but the wait time tonight is the longest Ive ever had to wait for testing & a room. The staff and nurses have been wonderful, its just the lack of rooms and staff that is causing the patients to suffer and wait 8+ hours to see a doctor or get a room.
Beware of when they give you magnesium that is torture if you dont really need it that bad they are incompetent to do their jobs so they torture people warning is that it burns cuz its cold if they have to give it to you and I mean have to not just to discourage you and make you go home and they need to learn how to sell that b******* about laparoscopic is cuz theyre lazy and they dont want to sell because their mommy didnt teach them how to worst hospital ever
Seriously go to ANY other hospital! I came in on August 31, 2020 because I was fainting constantly, had high cortisol levels, and was carrying around a bucket for a week (could not eat). They saw every single other patient in the room before me and more. It was not until I literally passed out unconscious in the waiting room did they bump me up one priority level. When they discharged me, they told me that they didnt find anything abnormal. However, one week later, they must have found someone who knows how to read a EKG and didnt find anything became you have a partial branch block. So lets recap....Someone with a heart problem was never even screened in the ER. They flat out faint to get moved up one priority level. Then you discharge the person without telling them that there is something going on with their heart. This is not healthcare. This should be called Dont care. If you value your life, I beg of you, please go elsewhere!
My husband is currently sitting in a corner in the ER after being transported from another hospital to his care team. (If it wasnt for the cancer center, I wouldve already written this place off. Kudos to my husbands surgeon) I drove a entire hour to be asked to wait separately from him, I explained hes post op surgery & needed nausea medicine, the nurse rolled her eyes while escorting me to another floor. To wait with strangers vs my husband, from the same household.Hes getting no fluids, no nausea meds, shakes, pale, sweaty & they have a attitude that screams I DONT CARE.
Waited for 3.5 hours to get back into a room and be checked out.. then I was there for 7 more hours waiting to get results from a ct scan. They couldn’t explain the pain I was having but also wouldn’t do anything for the pain while I was in the room. They acted like I was lying about the issues. They screwed up IV fluids TWICE and their mistake made my arm burn so bad I was shaking and sweating in pain. It was not a good experience. They also did a covid test in case I needed to be put in an actual hospital room, they lost the test, then hours later found it. They were supposed to have results in 3 hours 7 hours later there was still no results it was kind of irritating.
I have been to the ER at U of M many times over the last 3 years for Leukemia related issues. Tuesday I went in per my BMT team due to a fall I had earlier in the day. I am not able to get my vaccine for COVID yet and I am very immunocompromised. I have never seen the ER as full as it was Tuesday. I understand that happens, however, I felt VERY unsafe being in an area where I could swing my arms in any direction and touch somebody. Eventually I was rolled down the hall in my wheelchair between two vending machines. People lines the hallways and there is no specific place for more vulnerable, immunocompromised patients. It is by far the worst experience Ive ever had there. The hospital has the funding to build these huge, state of the art buildings around the hospital, but has made no upgrades to their small and outdated ER. If I could have left I would have. An immunocompromised cancer patient should never be exposed to that amount of people in such a small area. For how much my treatment costs, you would think that better care and accommodations would be provided
This hospital is at capacity! Do not come here unless you are prepared to leave after whatever emergent situation brought you here has been taken care of enough to seek care elsewhere. If you do stay? You’ll be put in overflow: a no-man’s-land and if it’s the one next to diagnostic radiology? The doctors forget about you, give you subpar care while the nurses and support staff are running around picking up all the slack.Seriously, do not come to University Hospital until they get themselves sorted.
Ridiculous wait time especially when I have a gash on my face. Staff came in and out of my room without warning to move equipment in or out and then to stock their stuff. Qaited over an hour for pain meds that were originally told to be Mortrin but ended up getting Tylenol instead. Still waited for a doctor or discharge papers an hour later.
My daughter was in admitted to picu and I was having a horrible trigeminal neuralgia flare up and was in so much pain so the security guard escorted me down to emergency so that way hopefully I could get some relief and be able to focus on my daughter. I waited from 12 am-4am and wasn’t even seen. You’d think that being in pain and coming to an ER you’d be seen in a somewhat timely manner, especially at that time of night. When asked if they knew when I’d be seen they said “I don’t know probably not for a couple more hours”. Wouldn’t come here voluntarily unless it was for Motts children’s.
Never thought that I would rate this hospital so low. Used to be a top notch place that I referred everyone to. My husband and I live over an hour away, but would never have thought to go anywhere else. Sad to see such a decline. The only thing good about our experience was the nurse who administered the tetanus shot and the admitting staff. Wait time after being admitted was way too long, and it wasnt really busy. My husbands bandage on his finger, which looked like a 2 year put it on him, fell off in the car on the way home. He was told to keep it on for 24 hours, and it just slid right off his finger! We will not be driving the distance nor recommending this hospital to anyone again. Cant wait to see the bill for this terrible experience.
The doctor was very nice and attentive but kept getting called away because they seem to be under-staffed and so was the PA. The people from radiology were also friendly and knowledgeable. The nurses were terrible. They would be nice to our faces but would quickly forget about us as soon as they left the room. Probably because all they seemed to do was gossip about other patients right outside our room! One of the nurses was very unfriendly. She barely responded to my mom when she asked questions and didn’t even smile politely. The nail in the coffin was when we asked for a wheelchair so my mom wouldn’t have to walk back to the valet parking. The unfriendly nurse left it outside the door. I had to push my mom in the wheelchair with one arm and drag her walker behind me with the other. We passed at least 20 staff and none of them helped or made eye contact. Some random male nurse in the hall finally pushed the walker for me. I would not recommend going here unless you are dying and it’s the closest choice. So unprofessional.
I agree with the long wait time , they kept telling me i wasnt severe enough to be admitted to hosptial was in ER for 8 hours then i came back later that night and waited the entire night for more testing . If i had been admitted in the first place, i probably wouldnt have declined from covid as bad . The nurse i had at night told me this is covid you just gotta tough it out . She was the most un compassionate nurse ive ever met .i was in so much pain they gave me zilch didnt even ask . Luckily i took my own blanket bc they dont offer you any sort of comfort at night ar least not the stickler i got , I couldnt breath they didnt do anything for that either . Came to another hospital (4th visit to er ) they asked me if i wanted to stay and didnt tell me i had to go home . Ill never go here again for ER .
Excellent care!! Ive worked in the medical field myself and this is the best Emergency Room Ive ever been to. Nurses, techs, EMT student and ultrasonographer were all kind, compassionate and on top of my care. The PA and the attending physician were outstanding. They spent ample time discussing my plan of care and actually listened to my thoughts/ concerns. All of my labs and X-ray/ Ultrasound were done efficiently. I am very thankful for the wonderful care.
Went in gasping for breath. The care I received was not only slow but wrong. It took 7 hours to run tests and get results. In the meantime without knowing the problem wanted to treat with meds. One of the nurses wanted to administer morphine for pain. Although I refused, she injected it in my IV regardless claiming it was a flush. Complete violation of my rights. Supposed to be one of the best hospitals in the US. Simply doesnt measure up.
#5 hospital in the US needs to get it together. No complaints about staff or doctors but they certainly have a glitch in their ER system. I’m a nurse and this treatment process is a joke. My husband has been in this ER for over 12 hours and has yet to see an actual Doctor. 10 hours just to get a ct and still no results. Haven’t seen a nurse in almost 3 hours.Even after paging and asking for his nurse it’s still been over 10 min and no one has come. How long should a person sit in pain before their care becomes important to this hospital. He has awesome insurance so it’s not that. Just poor time management and or understaffed or maybe to many patients. What ever it is someone needs to fix this ER!
These people will save your life.I have had the unfortunate experience of having to attend this ER for personal injuries and other reasons and this place rocks if your hurt.Feeling safe in your neighborhood means the world... knowing the UofM is minutes away is very reassuring for a mountain biking kayaking guy.I have attended many ERs in the US in Chicago, Phoenix, Texas, all sub-par to this fantastic teaching institution.Teaching instills a sense of change and inspiration to do better.Well at University of Michigan they absolutely do better.Thank you for such great care.
This place is phenomenal during a pandemic. My mother contracted severe COVID-19.I could not be with her to see what was going on with her care and she was so out of it but I got constant notifications via text message while she was in their emergency room. I knew then my mom was in the best place. Also the care she received saved her life. I am more than grateful I had the opportunity to write this review Thank You Thank You Thank You
This place takes 9 hours to determine if you have the flu or not. I attend this university, and Im officially never coming back to this hospital. We ultimately decided that nothing was going to be done about what we came here for, so we asked for our discharge papers, and the nurses said that its up to the doctor to write our discharge papers. So we were imprisoned in our room for hours on end because some doctor was too busy to let us out. I am never telling anybody to come here ever again.
I received excellent service here. The staff was friendly and caring. The registration guy even made me laugh, and the nurses were so sweet. The doctor and nurse kept me up to date on the progress of labs, treatment plan, and options. While there were other patients there, I was out in 2.5 hours. Also, they have a complimentary valet service, so no need to worry about parking.
Im going to give a review of my experience while it is still going, since it seems like I have so much time to just sit and wait.I was taken back by a nurse at 10:30. I have kidney stones and in a pretty decent amount of pain.I was not wheeled back to get it checked out until 12:45 when they took me to do an ultrasound..... They should do a CT scan. In the ultrasound they found my kidney stone that had fallen.Wheeled me back to my spot in the hallway (really, a hallway is where you keep your patients?)It is now 2:30am and I have still not seen a doctor. Only under qualified nurses who are more interested in collecting my insurance than my comfort and would rather talk about shoes than talk to their patients.Overall I am incredibly disappointed in UM as an institution and this is a horrible example of what I thought this place was all about.Whomever leads this part of the hospital needs to be replaced. I have never been in a situation like this where I do not feel like I am getting the proper attention and am ultimately scared they will miss something because honestly, they dont care.Still waiting to see a doctor and all I hear is laughter from personal conversations down the hall.Edit: at this point I couldve driven across the state to Ludington and have been treated before seeing a doctor here.
Thank you to all nurses and doctors at the University of Michigan emergency. The most kindest and professional staff I have ever seen. A special thanks to the dental team. One of the most painful times of my life and so hard to be there without my family by me. Everyone made me feel comfortable knowing I was in the right hands. I wish no one would ever have to go through what I went through but if you do just know you will be in the right hands when you go to U of M emergency.
This place is why no star reviews are needed. The employees here are very in to themselves. There are more social workers and paper pushers than medical staff. This hospital doesn’t believe in pain care, which is fine, but they also have zero sense of urgency. You will wait for a very long time in agony until they figure it out..if they figure it out. Then you will wait weeks to months for referrals. If you’re a guy you’ll be last on every list and wait much longer. They have excellent drs, first world equipment and staff but they give third world care and treatment. It’s real sad if this is “The Best in Michigan”.Good luck I hope this helps.
Worst hospital ever, Im giving one star because Im not allowed to give none.....you can be spitting blood with a bullet hole in your chest that you will still have at least a 3 hour wait......TERRIBLEUpdate: at the time I felt extremely bad, but I understand they had a lot of patients and not enough rooms and too many patients for one er nurse. The wait wasn’t ideal, but I know they did their best. This hospital is one of the best hospitals I’ve been to in Michigan
My first and only visit to this ER and they did a lumbar puncture and caused a spinal csf leak. Which can happen, of course, but needs dealt with. Instead of dealing with the spinal leak they left me miserable in a bed for over 20 hours and ignored me. I was already dealing with brain surgery complications. The nurse actually laughed at me as I sobbed and she refused my demands for the neuro team and even a patient advocate. I finally just begged to go home. Less than 2 days later I was taken via ambulance to Providence in Novi and within 3 hours they did a blood patch, fixed the spinal csf leak, and I went from being unable to even sit up to walking out of the ER.To that last nurse and ER doctor I dealt with...you should be ashamed of yourselves. Kindness and compassion go a long way, and if you got your head out of your rear you wouldn’t have missed something so easily fixable.
I took my daughter to this hospital, (She is prone to panic attacks and seizures due to her blood sugar dropping). MY initial impression was that the medical staff would their best to get her immediate medical attention, but boy, was I wrong! The medical staff could clearly see that my daughter was very scared and shaking. Rather than trying to calm her down and assure she was safe, they took her into a private room and patted down by a (very rude) police officer (without her consent). Her personal belongings were taken away from her and she was told that the medical staff that they were just Keeping her items safe for her, when really, the police had completely searched through them! (She DID NOT have ANY drugs, or ANY illicit substances on her!)She a total number of 5 hours hours in her room, if you could even call it that.. She asked the nurse several times if she could finally responded by saying We already told you that the doctor is far too busy to deal with you.. And stop crying! The patients and the other nurses are sick of it! And than proceeded to throw (yes, throw) a pile of blankets at her head. She received ZERO medical help. ZERO prescriptions were written to help her calm down...not to mention the we are now getting billed over $1,700, all for my daughter to be treated like garbage, told to shut up and several hours in her room completely wasted.I am beyond appalled by the service that my had daughter experienced here. She left the hospital in FAR worse condition than when she came in.If you are thinking about going, or taking a loved one to the UofM hospital, PLEASE, PLEASE reconsider!! Ive taken my dog to better hospitals than this one is and ever will be!
To think this is one of the greatest hospitals in Michigan is clearly a joke. Was totally misdiagnosed, was not tested properly, had to wait 6 hours before being seen, nurses at triage were extremely lazy and rude and I had a twelve year old dealing with my case. Then had to revisit because of the misdiagnosis the following day for the same reasons and I was basically dismissed and sent home. Because of them not doing the proper tests and checking more into what was going on, I may have avoided the several rounds if tests I have now and I still wouldnt be suffering today, they could have fixed the problem sooner. Thank God I actually followed up with my Dr, because for what I was diagnosed with, most likely I would not have followed up and things would have only gotten worse. I would never ever recommend this hospital. Its not the cleanest either, and seems as though their doctors and nurses have a bad problem about putting gloves on. Make sure they wear their gloves!! MERSA can kill you.
Received fantastic care here for my viral infection. I came in around 2am with trouble breathing and was admitted instantly. Many other ERs will make you wait forever to be admitted for breathing problems but breathing is a priority at UM. After being admitted I received fast and attentive care. Couldn’t be happier with the care here. Docs and nurses were super friendly and accommodating!
Taking your vitals at arrival triggers an outrageously high visit fee. DO NOT come to this ER unless you are not breathing or bleeding to death. They pack patients in to the point of people standing and wheelchairs blocking pathways. Worse they keep admitted patients in the ER due to a lack of space in the hospital so even if admitted you may spend hours and hours in the ER. Even worse, when this happens the people waiting for emergency treatment sit in the waiting area for 4, 6, 10 hours or more! They need to increase the number of beds in both the hospital and the ER and perhaps offer urgent care on site 24/7.The other hospital clearly advertised a goal of being treated and released/admitted within 3 hours. You likely will still be sitting in the waiting area 3 hours after arriving in the ER at U of M hospital. If this is what a top notch hospital looks like, were screwed!
From the phone call I made to ask if it was ok to bring my husband who tested positive for Covid, to talking to one of the nurses that came out to our car to get my husband, they were awesome. They ended up transferring him to the U of M hospital, where he stayed for a week with covid. The most compassionate and kind, nurses and Doctors. I am so grateful to them.
Have always had wonderful care here. I have had times where we did have to wait a while but Ive learned to be patient - the dying and critical people are seen first. Its always a good sign to me. The pediatric emergency department is phenomenal and their Child Life program is amazing. Ive always had things explained to me in a way that a person from a non-medical background can understand.
Absolutely terrible experience. We were there for a minor but painful skin lesion which took 5 minutes to treat...we were there for 8 hours!!! For the most part, no one was interested in giving us any information. Once admitted to the actual ER, which took 4 hours, we were pretty much forgotten until a new shift came in....If at all possible, try to avoid this ER.
I went to the University of Michigan emergency room with respiratory issues. They were busy. 70 people ahead of me I did not receive any care for hours and I ended up going home. The following day I went to the iha on Jackson road. They relieved all of my symptoms and was alarmed at the condition I was in. as much as I love the university I will not be going there again for any emergency issues. Go to St Joes or Chelsea emergency room its worth the drive.
If you are willing to wait 6 plus hours for care this is the place for you. I was stuck in the hallway for 6 hours before a PA came to see me. Do not come here unless you are dead. The wait is not worth it. The only reason why I waited so long is because I literally could not walk. The wait here would literally make you go insane. I asked the nurse for some water and she is still working on it. I think it is in their training to find ways to make you wait, so again Im going to tell you dont come here unless you are already dead because you will die from the wait.
Only gave one star because zero wasn’t an option. They are so slow and extremely rude. We have been her for over 3 hours for a heart condition that is serious and still have not had any results. The staff is rude when asked for updates. The patient can get out of bed so I asked if she could have someone come in and look at her because pain was worse since we got here and they refused because the patient didn’t come ask which was impossible. Bedside manner is terrible and it’s sad since the rest of the hospital is amazing. I will never go here again.
This is a review of the administration, not the employees. Everyone has treated us nicely, but patients are packed into hallways and storage spaces. Its completely overrun, and even patients that have been admitted (wearing gowns and in wheelchairs) are placed back into the waiting room. Its absurd that such an environment exists. Put some more money into more bed spaces or something.
This hospital and its staff are NUMBER 1 in my book! From the maintenance dept. to the ER, to the Nurses on the floors and to the surgery and especially the SICU staff! They are by far as professional as they come! How do I know? My life was saved there with a liver transplant! But the way they handled me and spoke to me and cared for me, is why I give them 5 Stars. I was treated with so much respect and care, it goes beyond words. I must have met at least 20 doctors and as much students or more. I met nurses on the 5th floor and SICU that were the top shelf in knowledge and work ethic like Ive never seen before. And Ive had, 8 operations from several different hospitals. So for me this hospital located in Ann Arbor is my 2nd home, because thats how good I felt staying there. Thank You Staff and thank you Michigan for saving my life!
Terrible place! I remember when I had to go to this emergency room, because my blood sugar dropped, due to forgetting to eat. The first thing that happened was that a police officer patted me down, as if I were some sort of dangerous criminal and I then went on to spend several hours in the waiting room, before actually getting to see a doctor. When I finally saw a doctor, she had a list of carefully phrased Are you going to kill yourself? questions, of which I responded No. I am having some sort of physical reaction and need treatment!. Sent me back into the waiting room for a few more hours, printed out the $800+ bill for me and sent me on my way. This is by far the worst hospital I have ever been to. !
Family member received top notch care in the critical/ICU ER. Dr. David Hackenson was very knowledgeable and took the appropriate time to explain the situation to the decision makers regarding the steps of the care being delivered and possible alternatives. His professionalism and compassion at the same time were a real blessing in a time of high stress. He even stayed after his shift to touch base and speak with our family. Valet service at door is a great idea and allows for a worry free visit. Thank you!
Fantastic experience. Everything was stream lined and efficient in the process. Ive never been to such a clean and well organized hospital. All of the doctors and nurses were very friendly and seemed very knowledgeable of the problem. I would go out of my way if I needed a hospital in future to go back here if I had a choice.
13 year old with double compound in his arm sat for 2 plus hours with a neck brace on, and not allowed water while waiting for the doctor. Knowing as soon as we walked in he needed a CT scan. We had to wait an hour and a half before the Dr. assistant ordered the CT. Then an hour later they come in to tell us no CT needed. Yet he still cant have water and must continue to wear the neck brace until after the Dr does his evaluation. What in the world? Left the ER in Chelsea at 10:23 PM via ambulance because the UofM had an orthopedic on staff that could see us right away.1:59 AM no Dr, no Ortho, no water, still has annoying neck brace on that continues to rub the bleeding sore on his neck. He did get a shot of Morphine and a promise the Dr is out making a round, wont be long. I promise2:19 AM nurse checking vitals, no Doctor, no Orthopedic.2:29 AM seen Doctor, got neck brace off, no water until after they review the blood labs from Chelsea. Dr states I see ghag you already seen Ortho we havent!
The waiting is no joke. Hours and hours to get a bed when my elderly father had a brain bleed. Once he got a bed it seems like the nurses all just sitting at computers. No sense of urgency at all. Hanging around, talking, when the ER was FULL and all beds full. Why are they all sitting around on computers?? No wonder the place is full - they work at a snails pace.
-The setup of this hospital is horrible. There arent enough rooms, so they had patients in gowns waiting in the waiting room.-I was sent to the ER with suspected ectopic pregnancy symptoms. The two ER doctors (Dev and McWeeney) that saw me didnt take my concerns seriously or even look at my past weeks hcg levels (which I had done because my doctor suspected an ectopic and wanted to monitor me). They diagnosed me with a UTI and tried to send us on our way. As we were leaving, McWeeney came in and acted pretty snobby about how the OB wanted to bless me before we could leave. Thank goodness for the OB Fellow (I forgot her name) who actually knew what to look for and quickly diagnosed me with an ectopic pregnancy. I got my two doses of methotrexate and sent us on our way. I understand that Dev and McWeeney arent specialists, but youd think youd want an OB for a suspected OB problem. We were also there for 8 hours. At least the OB Fellow caught the ectopic as it can be dangerous, along with our wonderful nurse Linda who also took our concerns seriously. I hope you dont have to go there as these two ER doctors clearly dont know what theyre doing and easily overlook a potentially life threatening situation.-On an ending note, besides the two doctors, all the other staff were fabulous and caring.
I understand that ER could be busy and wait could be long, but now reading the reviews seems this is an ongoing problem here. We waited 3 hrs and still hadnt been even processed, we gave our name at the desk and was told someone in tan would get our info. We were out in the hallway. They hadnt even asked what the issue was yet, we decided to come to the U of M hospital ER rather than the local clinic because we figured we would get the care we needed immediately instead of the clinic where all the resources are not at hand. Mistake!!! We asked about still waiting, and they couldnt even find us in the computer where we first checked in with name and address and they updated our phone #, didnt want the medical card because someone in tan would be along, well if they lost our name on their computer of course no one in tan is going to show up at your bed in the hallway. So they wanted to know if someone in blue put my daughter in the bed in the hallway!!! What? I dont know but someone wearing clothes took our name, I got a pass and someone with scrubs put us in the hallway. We left after waiting some more and things didnt seem to be getting figured out. Wow, we were shocked, this is the infamous U of M. Not impressed with their system, if it is obviously this crazy on a regular basis I think they need to rethink and make things more efficient, we will never again go to that ER. It was just crazy. Unbelievable.
Absolutely ridiculous. Here for three hours now. In the waiting room. The doctors may be fantastic but the waiting room is a joke. All my doctors are U of M doctors so I like to come here for that reason. The last time I was here I walked out before being treated. Looks like I’ll be doing the same today. Joke
Long wait time on a Friday night but this being the fourth health care facility I went to in a week left me so grateful. The ER doctors here knew exactly what was wrong and thank God they caught it before anything got worse. I am highly impressed with the whole team at UofM ER from the very beginning to the very end. God bless all who we encountered and all employees who care enough to make a difference in their patients lives.
Only way to get service in a reasonable amount of time is to be rolled in on an ambulance gurney. We were referred here by one of the specialty units to expedite testing. It would be fair if Michigan Medical staff were required to receive some medical care through the emergency room. Perhaps service would improve.
Worst emergency room visit I have ever experienced. I came in with lower flank pain, most likely caused by a kidney stone, and all I was given were two tablets of Tylenol because the nurse practitioner “wasn’t one to give out pain medication.” I waited 7 hours for Tylenol. Avoid this emergency room at ALL costs.
This place is the worst emergency room I have seen in 25 yearsIts like going back in time. 3 hours before being looked at with chest pain. The cafeteria is disgusting, every table was dirty, very unhealthy. Apparently the hospital wants you to get cancer. All they serve is diet pop, aspartame instead of a natural product like sugar. very strange
I would have gave a 4 or 5 star, but they left me hanging at the end. It might have been the fact they were perturbed the 9th floor psych unit gave my fiancee a labotomy shot for no reason rendering her with Drug induced Parkinsons disease. How could you even work in the same building without wanting to punch the guy who abused your patient is an act of God and restraint. That doesnt fly so well on even the greenest streets of Ann arbor. Im 41 am I that old now?
Absolutely awful. Waited 4 hours my husband has recurring bone infections that has resulted in 1 amputation and the infection came back. After waiting over 4 hours they take us back only to take us to a bed in a hallway thats lined up with patients. After I went off on the nurse and said no he has a deadly infection she gave me attitude and said we could go back to waiting room so we left.
Brook Connor2 reviewsa minute agoShowed up in extreme pain. Was having tonic spasms (total body) every 5 minutes. They looked at the MRIs of my thoracic and brain from previous hospitals. Based on those, they told me I had a functional disorder and should see a psychiatrist. I thought UM would help me. The next dr I saw out of Providence looked at my symptoms and knew within minutes the problem was in my cervical spine. I had 3 lesions. Was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis. I am wondering why UM would not investigate my whole central nervous system. How exactly would a psychiatrist help me with Transverse Myelitis? I would stay away from UM for neurological issues. A disappointing waste of time. BTW, I hold 2 UM degrees.
If there is a Michigan Game, DO NOT GO TO THIS ER. DRUNK PEOPLE HAVE PRIORITY OVER EVERYONE ELSE AT THE ER ACCORDING TO ANN ARBOR CITY ORDINANCE. Yes, you read that right! DRUNK PEOPLE. Don’t believe me? Call and ask! The resources wasted at this hospital are astounding! And it is a FELONY to assault a nurse, but at my last stay I saw it happen in front of security several times!!! And they did NOTHING! Don’t even get me started on MSSU Blue. Do yourself a favor go to Beaumont Royal Oak, ranked 11th in the nation. U of M is 14th!
Worst experience ive had in a hospital. Do not go here. Ive had a staph infection for 8 months, broke out in lesions everywhere, was in serious pain and the only thing they offered me was motrin... no pain medication or antibiotics. The staff makes it very obvious that they do not care about their patients. Like i said, do not go here.
I must say, this is by far one of the most terrible hospitals I have EVER been to. If I could rate 0 stars, I absolutely would. I had to wait in the waiting room for several hours and when I finally saw the doctor and began having tests done, I found out that it was the wrong doctor, WITH THE WRONG PATIENT CHART! The doctors and staff seemed as though they were straight out of the Simpsons! This was not the first, second, or even third time this these problems have occurred with the UofMIf you need to go to the hospital, or doctor for an appointment, PLEASE DO NOT go to UofM. You would be better off seeking treatment from a third-world doctor! The UofM is nothing more than an oligarchical corporation, whos primary concern is making money. They DO NOT care about their patients and I will make sure to tell EVERYONE I know what a appalling place this is!!!
Came in with over 20 bullseye bites. Multiple doctors looked at me and refused to diagnose it as Lymes. The next day I had a fever, and muscle fatigue, and feel like I have been hit by a truck. Luckily a doctor at an urgent care recognized it and gave me the medication to treat it. If I hadnt gone for a second opinion I would be unknowingly suffering from this debilitating disease.2 stars for the friendliness of the staff, otherwise I would give it a 1.
My husband had a severe laceration on his right hand. One tendon was sliced. He was transferred from Chelsea Hospital. He waited from 12:30 pm until 6pm to see a doctor. 2 residents came and took pictures for the attending doctor to see. (The attending never came to see the wound.) They finally stitched him up. His wound was left open for all those hours in that germy emergency room. He had pus by the time the residents came. We finally got out of the ER around 8:45pm. This happens often. Be prepared for a long, long wait. Also, they often assign patients to Physician Assistants instead of Doctors when you go to the clinics. If you see a doctor it will most likely for a few minutes and a PA will do your exam.
April 2017: Arrived at ER at 5 AM; was told about 9 AM I would be admitted; did not get a room until 7 PM, 14 hours later.October 17, 2017: Arrived at ER at 1 PM on Tues; was told about 7 PM I would be admitted; did not get a room until 7 PM on **Wed**, 30 hours later (yes, sat in ER for 30 hours). Not sure where the issue here is, perhaps just by bad luck hit some busy days, but it did not add to the happiness of the occasion, needless to say. No complaints about the treatment, though.
Such kind and heartfelt care ! Over the past 30 years, I have had so many sad, terrifying moments and, heartbreaking memories here at the University of Michigan Hospital. It’s so nice to come away with a positive experience. I’ve been impressed with the kindness, care & compassion demonstrated to my wife: from the moment she arrived in the ED ( with Nurse Corey and Nurse Sara), to the MPU with kindness and professionalism from Nurse Dawn Andrews , to Paul with Patient Transport all the way to her admission to 6C and was cared for by Nurse Stacey and Nurse Kori . My wife’s physician in the ED, Dr.Hunter, made sure that my wife and I understood the process by which he was making decisions and trajectories for her care. Dr. Hunter made rounds on 6C and took the time to provide important updates that impacted her course of care. As a worried and concerned husband, I can’t begin to articulate my level of gratitude for Dr. Hunter’s approach to proactive and ACTIVE pain management as my wife’s pain levels changed. He listened to my wife and that sounds so basic and so simple ; but, when you’ve seen your wife in pain for hours and hours and all you can do is sit by her bed and lovingly pat her hand and tell her funny stories to try to make her laugh - - - your heart can only be grateful when someone pledges to you their genuine desire and planned efforts to ease that pain. That someone I’m grateful for is : Dr. Hunter
I took my son to emergency with a specific request to have him seen by certain doctors. In spite of the fact that he had no physical trauma, they had 4 different people interview him, taking 4 hours, before sending him where he obviously needed to go. By that time it was late in the evening and we just gave up. Thanks, guys.
They keep you waiting for hours more than 8hours like there really messed up and really messed up hospital I don’t recommend this hospital at this hospital ya should bring with ya blankets and pillows because ya can sleep at the waiting room cuz they take to long to call you in
I would not go there again. I am not going there again. No. Wait at the hallway is too long (6 hours).Staffs are very unorganized (repeated 3 times keying patients info in the system). Hospital and doctor fees are unreasonably expensive and yet they dont have much to offer to patients except opioid based strong pain killers. Dont go there.
The ER is fantastic! However I’m giving 2 stars because of the valet and admin that refuse to look into items getting stolen from my car.Police report filled due to vape pen being stolen from consol. They’re coming for your things when you’re looking for medical treatment. Total scumbags
Im sitting here right now with my husband who needs an MRI. If he had an ICB hed be dead. 12 hours now and took 4 hours for initial MD. Your missing your quality measures! If hes stable enough to sit 12 hours why wouldnt you just have me take him to another site for the MRI? RIDICULOUS. You can get results anywhere!
Came in for chest pain and abdominal pain waited for 3 hrs in lobby they calling nothing but white people to get situated in a room myself and 3 blacks in waiting room all the white people was already called They Racist they say they call who has a serious life threaten condition first so i take it that blacks dont have life threatening not to mention i had chest pain. This hospital is for whites only they dont care about blacks i could of had a heart attack but thats how it is when you go to an ANN arbor ER hospital Racist and im looking into contacting the board about this they got 1 star because i cant post this eeview without the rating but its a 0
My mom waited for 6 hours to see an ophthamologist. He seemed to be put out to see her. Unfortunately st. Joes didnt have an emergency ophthalmologist on staff or she wouldve gone there. St. Joes is where its at. For UM being toted as the best, they sure are an embarrassment.
Charged +$200 for Aspiration to drain cyst in my ear--pushing with q-tip, pricked with a needle to bleed and told nothing came out(which could have been done at home).... thank god insurance covered ALL THE OTHER EXPENSES from wherever @[email protected] owed $145 out of pocket. Never again!
Horrible! I came in severe hip and leg pain from nerve pain. They refused to really treat me. I can’t walk! That means bathing, making food for myself, or going to the bathroom without help. I needed real pain relief and nothing . They shipped me out the door ASAP. Do not go there if you need help with pain.
I guess this is not only u of m but entire US...these staff are hard workers... but have to say. If you need medical help, find a flight ticket. Some civilized countries actually figure out the problem and cure it - you dont have to pay this much for use more advils.
I’ll never understand why after knowing for years that the emergency room setup is clearly dysfunctional, there has been no effort made by the hospital to restructure it. Everything from check in to check out takes an excessively long time. This setup is completely unacceptable and does not compare to other local hospitals.
Ive let me just say im a very sick women who came for help maybe some answers.well because of meds imim on and my past the nurse took it apon herself to label me for someting i wasnt there for or needed help with they went threw my personal things i now waiting to here from the courts i think it should go threw the doc before actions are taking the doc even said he aplozed and didnt think it was necessary im very upset will never trust u of m again...
The way doctors are treating us sickle cell are just not cutting it anymore I keep leaving mad and not saying anything but that has to stop I had a very rude doctor today hope I don’t ever have him again in my life doctor Carter Treatment was very rude and unprofessional I know that it’s really only blacks that has this but making it about drugs is something I never went through if I tell you I have meds at home and they are not working you still trying to give me the same thing should let you know that I’m not just here for drugs

2022-08-30I went to u of m emergency due to disabling migraine and dizziness issues per my doctor’s request. Unfortunately I had to go in on my birthday. I was in so much pain in my head and neck and I had to also be dropped off by myself. They got me in right away. My nurse Megan was phenomenal. She was prompt, informative and super caring. On top of all she had going on her and the whole nursing staff went out of there way to make me smile with a hand made birthday card. I was so taken back how amazing they were. My doctor was prompt, caring and really tried to help me. My experience made me a u of m patient for life.My husband experience was he was in the ER here just over a week before to have his appendix removed. His wait was a lot longer than mine and had to wait in this in between room for hours (his only gripe). However, he loved his nursing staff and couldn’t say enough about the doctors. He was so grateful to have had U of m and their nursing staff take care of him.Long story short… you might have to wait to get in or get tests. They are an in need hospital and other hospitals air lift to them. People from all over come to them. However, you will get exceptional nurses and doctors.. that care. That’s our experience with U of M emergency department. I hope it helps you!

2022-05-18Zero stars. Probably the worst ER department I have ever been to in my life. I would not recommend this department for a true medical emergency or for minorities. The difference in treatment was palpable. The staff was extremely rude and condescending. Not a single person communicated to me what my husbands vitals were or introduced themselves. Furthermore you take a blood pressure reading over a sweatshirt? Its high and you dont retake it at any point. Any medical professional knows you remove the sweatshirt for an accurate blood pressure reading. We were cut off repeatedly when trying to explain what happened. We came in for a head injury and I initially was told to wait with him and then another nurse who was extremely rude and unprofessional told me I needed to go upstairs away from my husband to wait so they could clear out a waiting room that was not full. We both were extremely uncomfortable with that request as he was actively bleeding from his ear and had hit his head hard. He didnt even know he fainted 3 times. I explained this to the nurse and she proceeded to patronize me by stating he could make his own medical decisions. However not a single nurse assessed his wound nor were they staffed enough to keep an eye on him in the event he did have a concussion or even possibly faint again. The entire staff that night minus the one minority nurse needs retraining on how to interact with patients and spouses/family. As well as how to respond in emergency situations. Then the nurse who drew my husbands blood apparently was confused as to why I was sent away. His arm is bruised from his IV that was in for maybe 10 minutes which makes no sense as his veins are easy to access. I am currently waiting for the patient complaint department to follow up on the voicemail I left regarding this experience. Due to the poor treatment we left this facility AMA due to mistreatment on top of we didnt feel we were truly being provided quality care or listened to. For UofM to attempt to hold their medical facilities at such high standard they should be utterly ashamed of the incompetent, toxic and borderline abusive staff they have working in this emergency room department. I will not be surprised when they encounter a medical lawsuit for negligence. I myself have worked in the medical field for 10+ years, just because we were minorities, appeared to look young and were dressed in sweats at midnight does not mean we were not educated people. Of all the hospitals I have worked in across multiple states and visited this was the worst experience I have ever encountered. I wouldnt recommend anyone come to this hospital for an emergency. I will also be filing a complaint regarding this facility to the state.

2022-06-25This is the worst emergency room I have ever been to. When you enter the employees are cold hearted. They separate the patient from their loved ones. NEVER have I seen this before. It is UNACCEPTABLE! It is not the patient fault your facility doesn’t have a large enough waiting room. It sounds like it’s time for a remodel. The patients need their family most during a time of emergency. It is ABSURED! We had to wait 6 1/2 hours in separate waiting rooms. I would never suggest anyone go there nor will I ever go back! But… once we were finally admitted the care was fabulous

2022-07-26My U of M Cardiologist told me to come to the ER because I was experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness. He wanted me admitted for surgery to have an obstruction removed from the left atrium of my heart. I did as I was told. I made the 4 hour drive to the ER, told them what the doctor told me to tell them and now I sit in the waiting room. Been here 3 hours with these continuing symptoms and now Im told it could be another 2 before I am even taken to an exam room! This us the state of modern medicine? This is insane! I love my Cardiologist but the ER here is a joke.

2022-09-14The check in staff was acceptable and performed their jobs, nothing special. There is only enough room in the waiting area for patients, so if you are with someone, they will have to wait upstairs, but they will be notified of the progress. The nursing staff and physicians were 👍, but understaffed. Now all that being said, if you can avoid going to the ER, do it. We were just there yesterday about 10am and by the time she finally made it out of the waiting room and to a bed it was roughly 3:30pm. By the time the whole ordeal was over it was almost midnight. So if you don’t need an ER, go to the Urgent Care or see your provider.

2022-08-20You will wait in this ER for hours and hours to be seen, sometimes a whole 24 hrs. Last time we brought our disabled son, 14 hour wait to be seen. Then sat in a draped cubicle for another 14. Discharge was 2 1/2 hour wait. They wanted us to leave him alone too and he has no use of arms, hands or legs. Can you imagine being left alone like that in there?Worst ER in Michigan, by far.

2022-06-24This will be a long one but I feel like my experience is important to share.I recently spent a short stay at the UofM ER and MSSU-blue short stay wing.I have never been a patient of UM but I now know why they are recognized as one of the greatest hospitals in the country. When I first arrived the ER was very busy, so I entered with a prepared amount of patience. I had been having trouble breathing and eating and I had been discharged from another hospital with no answers or medications to help me with my symptoms. So I came to UofM for a second opinion and help. The intake team was very kind to me and got me registered quickly. I did have to wait a while but eventually I did start to receive care- and when I did it was EXCELLENT.In the ER waiting room a very kind young man came to draw my blood for my initial triage. I let him know that due to a bad experience with IVs in the past; I wasn’t the best at sitting for the stick. He didn’t treat me like an annoyance (something he could have easily done with how overwhelmed and busy they were) and instead assured me he would be as quick and painless as possible. He was exactly that, and made short conversation with me to help the process along. When I was finally admitted my transport team was SO SO nice. They brought me to my room and from there I had the best experience I could have possibly had. My entire team was completely flawless.I wish I could remember all of their names. I wish I could nominate every tech, nurse, PA, and doctor for an award in care.I was treated with the utmost respect, patience, and compassion. I’m not used to this with how overwhelmed and understaffed hospitals have been these past couple years. And I mean EVERYONE. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the people involved in my care from transport to room service to the teams of doctors I saw was absolutely the kindest and most patient they could have been for a terrified patient like me.A super nice young man took me to CT and kept me calm by making small talk. He assured me I was in good hands and I believed him. The two young ladies who did my CT were super sweet and helped me with my first CT, and paid close attention to my pain when I told them my IV port was tender (they slowed the drip so it wasn’t as painful) and were very supportive the entire time. The nurses, techs, and PAs who were involved in my care were also total angels. I was not always the best patient; tearful and reactive and constantly paging. They never once treated me poorly. Never once made me feel like I was an annoyance or burden for them. It was just nonstop compassionate care- and I have never had that before: I wish I could nominate them all for a DAISY award. In the current state of our American healthcare system; overwhelmed with sick people and often understaffed- it would have been very easy for them to be stressed and annoyed with me- it would have been understandable. I know I was not their only patient and yet I felt like their only patient. Everyone involved treated me like a life that mattered and I cannot describe how much that meant to me.I am so sorry to all of you that I cannot name. If you remember me; I was the perpetually anxious patient with a GI issue that was resolved there. I was in room 39 MSSU Blue short stay from 6/21-6/23. Thank you; all of you. All of you.Thank you so so much for all of your effort and infinite kindness. You made me trust hospitals again.

2022-05-20I’ve been satisfied with all my most recent experiences and care here. I like how the doctors and staff all explain things well and do thorough examinations and test. Most of my answers and treatment all come from this hospital. The only thing I dislike about this hospital is the ER’s waiting area. It’s so small. From the parking lot to the the inside waiting area.

2022-04-29My fiancé was admitted and her nurse there was really nice and every experience with the medical team has been great. I was unable to be there and tried to call with some concerns, but the night clerks kept hanging up on me after I told them I was calling regarding a patient (naming my fiancé). I tried talking to them 3 times with the conversation ending at me mentioning my fiancé (as Ive already stated). Until her nurse answered on my 4th attempt. Its crazy how a place with such a great medical team also has such horrible clerks

2022-08-30Emergency room packed like sardines long waits to see doctors. Having stroke symptoms and was told to sit in waiting room very unexceptable. The money they charge your insurance the hospital should be ashamed of the type of service patients are receiving. No one should have to wait this long.
