We put an application in to adopt 2 cats at pet smart. One was a kitten named Merrick and an 8 year old adult named Wick. They only communicated through email with us. Only to reject the adoption through email without an explanation even after we sent them back an email asking if there was something we could fix or do to help change their mind. And went back to the pet store to see Merrick has been adopted and we understand their might have been more than one of us trying for Merrick. But Wick the 8 year old still sits there in his cage. I have been going to pet smart every day now to see Wick and give him love he knows me when I come in. And he loves on me. But he still sits there. He has been there almost 4 weeks now. Me and my family are very saddened about this situation. My last cat lived 18 years. And was very well taken care of and very loved. I wanted to share some pictures of Wick in hopes he will find a home very very soon😢💔
Submitted an application and was in contact with the volunteers here for 2 days arranging to set up to meet the two kittens I was going to adopt, they asked for more information which I responded via email, (no phone number to contact and they take 12-24 hours per response via email) so I await a response and when I do 12 hours later they tell me they set up a meet with people who submitted an application 2 days after us, which completely shocked me. They were asking for more info to set up a meet, then 12 hours later they tell me they scheduled a meet with someone else. I felt this is wrong, if we are talking and trying to set up a meet date, don’t go behind my back and schedule someone else over me who applied after. This is wrong and I will never deal with this idiotic process again. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the many other shelters which actually have phone numbers to contact and don’t take 2 days to respond and work with you on the adoption just to give them to someone else after.
If you need someone to decide on the pet for you this is the place to go. I asked about a couple different ones and they said no. Even after talking to me for 15 mins how do they know what is a good fit? I even caved and decided to go with the one they suggested and asked to set up the adoption a week out. Was told they could not schedule one that far in advance. I have since gone elsewhere and my new pet is thriving in their new home. I feel bad for all the pets there that miss out on really good homes and still living in cages.
I had been looking for a senior dog for quite some time, with little luck. Many of the shelters I had contacted had horrible response time and didnt seem to care much for their work. Wyondottes volunteers are caring, responsive, and extremely diligent in finding a good home for these animals. Not only did they respond quickly to my intake but they made sure to call past vets and ensure I would be a proper home for my furry friend. I adopted Patches about 2 months ago now and I could not be more in love. Thank you Wyondotte Animal Shelter for caring about these animals and for matching me with Patches.
Volunteers are very condescending and unwilling to answer any questions or inquiries before brushing you off to another shelter, I simply asked if they had any breeds that were hypoallergenic. I had to e-mail them twice and they took 3 days just to tell me to try pure breds instead, sent me a PetMD article condescendingly informing me about how hypoallergenic breeds work as if I didn’t already know. (SURPRISE someone with cat allergies knows how allergies work) They haven’t even responded to my request to come in and see if any of the cats were a good fit for me because I have known allergies to certain breeds and no allergies to others. If it’s our responsibility to help sheltered animals, it should be their responsibility to help us help them. And then people wonder why these poor animals are euthanized because they make it so hard to even find the right pet for you. I understand not wanting to open up due to COVID, but they haven’t even allowed me to make an appointment after telling me they only take appointments. The treatment of animals here may be excellent, but customer service here needs a serious improvement.
I’ve been trying to get a cat for quite a while now and while I completely understand that this shelter has opted to stay closed after the pandemic, however I do not understand why they don’t even bother responding to emails when that’s their only available form of communication and they say they only allow visits by appointment yet won’t allow me to make an appointment?? I’ve applied for 6 different cats and only got a response one 1 saying they don’t prefer to let people who don’t have other cats adopt kittens and when I sent TWO follow up emails I still didn’t get a response. Separately, I went back to petfinder today to see that the Siamese pair I applied for we’re not longer available and I’ve been applying for them since they first showed up on the site. This is extremely rude and unprofessional
The best thing I can say about WAAC is that the low star reviews are just wrong. How can making sure that the adoption is a perfect fit on all levels be a bad thing? Cats and dogs should never be released to inappropriate homes and adopters. These folks have it bang on.I drove 45 minutes (more because I got lost) to their location to have a meet&greet with 1 cat and left after 2 hours with 2 cats, a carrier because I only brought one with me and a huge supply of medications that one of the cats required. The volunteers were thorough, amazing and their love and respect for the animals was in abundance. If someone isnt approved for the pet they want, understand that its for the best. Dont give up on this place. You will be rewarded.
The people seem to care about the animals and you must commend that they volunteer their time, however I wouldnt recommend trying to adopt from here. They used a bait and switch tactic to try to force other animals on us than we applied for and after driving an hour to meet the one we applied for, told us we couldnt adopt it because the kitten would be too playful. Basically ruined Christmas for my kids.
They couldnt get my vet records after sitting on hold for a half hour when I recieved them within a day. When I questioned why it was taking so long and asked if the kitten I still wanted was even available still, they denied me. Ive never had so many problems getting a pet and I am beyond frustrated when all they should want is their animals going to good homes.
Very friendly people that work here and their adoption fee is very reasonable. The building seems really clean which is great. Adopted a dog here and the process is very easy. My only complaint is that it took six days from the day we filled out an application which I think is kinda lengthy. A lot of other shelters let you take the pets the very same day you fill out an app which is nice. Overall a very nice place
The staff is very friendly and they really care for the animals. They choose the homes of the animals by best fit instead of first come first serve, which means the animals go to homes that best fit them. They also allow you to visit with the animals and get to know them before deciding to adopt. Overall a wondr place to pick up your next family member!
I originally went in to just look at some cats for my little family. Thinking to myself I was going to get a pretty young one- I met an older cat named Maline, and we instantly had a connection. The adoption process was easy, the volunteers were absolutely wonderful, and within just a couple of days, shes become a great addition to me and my kids. Ill never adopt anywhere else if I have to!
Small shelter with a BIG heart. It doesnt look like much from the outside, but once youre inside, you see the magic happening. The staff and volunteers are all totally invested in the welfare of the animals they are caring for. They might be kind of choosy as to whom they adopt their dogs and cats to, but thats a good thing. They truly have the best interest of their little charges at heart. They need to make sure the adoptive family has the time, motivation and means to welcome a new family member. I adopted my dog Violet there approximately one year ago. They let you take your time to visit with each of the dogs or cats you may be interested in; they dont rush you in any way, and they respond to questions via email very quickly. The adoption fee is extremely reasonable considering youre taking home a dog or cat that has all necessary medical procedures and vaccinations taken care of. You will have to pay an additional $10 if you want your new family member microchipped, but thats a super reasonable price considering veterinary hospitals charge a whole lot more. WAAC is a small shelter doing very big things. I highly recommend and will return there when its time for another new furry family member.
Wonderful animal shelter! The volunteers are amazing and try to make the animals as comfortable as possible, which can be easily seen with the cats, their cages are very nicely set up. Also the animals are all spayed and neutered prior to adoption, so while their adoption fees may be a little higher than other shelters, it will save you money in the end.
I have had such a great experiance here. The people working here were so patient with my family (including my 2 year old)while we searched for the right cat. We found Dog it and are awaiting our approval on our application to bring him home and make him a cherished member of our family. I just want to thank everyone there for taking such good care of the animals and for being so informative and caring to the people who come in to visit.
Long story short. My friends cat had recently died and I told him I would go with him to look for a new friend. We found the perfect kitty for him and put the application in. Until this point it was one of the most beautiful special times.Until this lady yelled at my friend for not being a good pet owner for not knowing everything about taking care of a pet. Then literally blamed him for his cat dying. LEGITIMATELY BLAMED HIM FOR THE DEATH OF HIS CAT.My friend just recently lost his father and then his cat and this was supposed to be a healing and positive experience. This lady (Anita) absolutely ruined it. If she is here in the future. We will turn around and leave.1 star for amy the newer volunteer who made the experience wonderful until Anita ruined not only our experience there but our day. (Picture for reference of who to stay away from)
Disclaimer: the poor review isnt because we werent granted an animal. The poor review is because of the impersonal service and lack of communication. My wife and I were looking for a new cat for our home and as another pet for our son to grow up with and learn to take care of. This was our very first visit to and shelter and Ill admit we probably came off clunky or unfamiliar with it - and we were. We came in already interested in a specific pet so we focused our attention on him while we were there and spoke to two volunteers about him. He hadnt had two required tests/vaccs so we were unable to take him out into the visitation room for a more personal experience. Beyond the basic application, we were asked two additional questions in an email. One was regarding the vaccines our dog has and the other was an attempt to ask how we were planning to prevent a future cat from escaping all the time. The second question about escaping originated after we shared how our previous, 7 yo adult cat, got out of the house and never came back despite much time doing our due diligence bringing him home. This was an isolated event and we also shared that our cat would chill on the patio with us or while I was grilling in the back yard. The farthest shed go is a close corner of the yard and then just roll around on the cement and come back inside. We received our denial letter today and it was a very obvious canned, copied and pasted response. Nothing personal about why we specifically were denied or how to be considered for adoption in the future. Zero helpful information. The only personalized thing was the dear Emily greeting.Im not sure where we went wrong, WAC, but we for sure will be letting everyone know what to expect when they consider visiting your facility. I know this next statement probably isnt the best idea, and I think volunteers are a good thing, but if yours dont have any related or prior qualifications to make them a better choice than any other person who loves animals, then how does your volunteer status make you qualified to make these decisions? You didnt even take an opportunity to really get to know the family who Akbar cold hand gone home with. Poor job.
Wyandotte animal shelter has a lot of internal issues Ive never seen an animal shelter run like this its clean but theyre very snooty people have a difficult time adopting cats and dogs Ive had cats Ive had dogs for 30 years now I have none and want one as a comfort pet. I was given the third degree about adopting they advertise dont buy adopt a pet in need yep they dont adopt pets out all the Pet Rescues take all the little dogs when they come right in and then turn around and charge you $350 to adopt a pet I personally think its a scam own my own home have impeccable references have a fenced yard and still theres an issue with the Wyandotte Animal Shelter I dont recommend to anybody
I adopted my dog Tyson from here and they were great! I had emailed about another dog, but he was adopted so they suggested Tyson as a substitute. When I went to visit him I didnt feel at all rushed or pressured. When I picked him up everyone was so excited - you could tell they all really truly care for the animals.
The are so many cats. I went to see one. Was told he was shy. When they opened the cage he approached my husband and they where shocked. We thought good sign. But you so no get one on one time with a person here regarding adoption. You full out an application and they pick it apart . They are assuming if they give us the cat we want we.will let him outside because our previous cat was indoor and outdoor cat. But if I adopt a declawed cat Im not going to let him out. They drill you about vet record. I forgot to tell them where my old cat went for vaccines and I forgot to mention my madien name. So the held that against me. Thinking we wont take a cat to a vet if needed. But they are looking to a cat I no longer own. If I show interest in a cat thats going to need special care trust me Im prepared Im a stay at home mom..id be able to work with the cat daily. But now who M ows how long the poor buddy will have to wait before the judmental shelter lets anyone have him. They only communicate via email Thats how questions get answered and they determine if you get the cat. Nothing is face to face. The woman there dont give you a time of there day. Awfully sad.
The lady who took us to walk the dog was very nice and friendly. Talked to her for 15 min. When we went back inside to ask about our application the lady behind the desk was immediately rude with me. The whole time I felt like she was judging us as if she had already determined in her head that we didnt deserve the dog. Not sure if its because we are younger or because my girlfriend has tattoos but whatever the reason I felt like we were being talked down to. We are more than qualified to adopt an animal, but she hadnt even looked at the app yet before being over negative with me.
A close friend with An amazing heart for animals tried to adopt a cat from here. She was denied via email. When there are over 90,000 cats annually being put down because no one wants them, I find it completely offensive to be denying good people the ability to adopt a cat into a loving home. I am absolutely disgusted at the childish Bureaucracy displayed at this so called “Animal Shelter”. I would recommend Taylor or Dearborn animal shelters for anyone this poor excuse for a shelter denies.
If you are looking to adopt, dont tell them if you have other pets at home. They will ask you who the vet is and call them to make sure they have all been seen recently. If they havent, they will deny your application. They also make you bring your pets and whole family to the shelter as if you cant pick out your own dog. Its much easier to just go buy a dog, idk why they make it so difficult. It really discourages the shop dont adopt movement. Im sure any dog would be happier on my couch with a yard to run around in than in that shelter.
Absolutely LOVE the cat spaces here.. Did not look at the dogs though. We arrived almost at closing so we went through quickly.. There were far too many volunteers there.. The ones in the cat room didnt care to answer any questions and simply told us to not even touch the cages.. We never did but was still accused of it. Made it hard to spend the few minutes we had.
Adopted Pumpkin early Jan. (Name changed to Pekoe). Didnt want a macho male called Pumpkin.Well, Anita and the rest of the staff could not have be more accomodating. So Pekoe and I are new roomates and we are doing great. The only issue is that hes decided to spend his leisure time lounging and bathing in MY chair. (: (:Thanks to all volunteers for their awesome work.

2022-03-05These people are absolute angels. We set up a meet and greet and they made sure we had plenty of kitties to be introduced to. They not only helped us meet our newest family member, but they gave us information and took their time making sure we understood our kitties needs and past story. You can tell they really love their animals and want to make sure they are sending them to the most purrfect furever home.

2022-02-23We adopted a kitty from WAC in December. The process was quick, and the volunteers were super helpful and responsive to messages/questions. We love Rowena, who we now call Winnie. A great experience overall.

2022-04-20This is a very well run, clean and loving adoption centre. We came from Ontario to adopt one of their cats and I must admit that I found it to be clean and full of great volunteers that love the animals that have been put in their care. We had such a great experience and are now going to be putting them at the top of our donation list every year. If you want a good pet from a clean responsible loving shelter this is the place to go. And, of course we cant forget that little Percy is one of the friendliest and loving cats weve ever owned. Highly recommend.

2022-02-23I had a great time working with this shelter to find my perfect fur baby. Puck is the best cat in the world, and we are going back to the shelter to get him a sister later this week!

2022-04-01They were terrific to work with. We love our new kitty and she is happy to be with us. Ashley is everything a kitty could be. She loves to play catch and knew how to do it on her own. I would guess someone at the rescue worked with her. Great work getting her ready for adoption. A heartfelt thanks to the volunteers .

2022-04-03I absolutely love this place, the compassion from the Volunteers is amazing. You can tell by how they care for the animals, take the time to understand their stories and help them find their furever home. Anita was a pleasure to work with and I am so happy to have my baby Sturgis in my home, making my household complete. Thank you Wyandotte Animal Shelter.

2020-03-18I adopted the sweetest boy from this animal shelter. The volunteers are what really make this place amazing. They make sure that while their past owners have failed them, they still get love, attention, and what they need before these sweet animals go to their forever homes. When I went to adopt my dog, Weeble, all of the volunteers showed up to give him a send off and some cried and it was so touching. They had really gotten to know Weeble and they worked so hard to get him into a good home.I have even kept contact with a couple of the volunteers so they can watch Weebles progress. If you want to meet the greatest volunteers and adopt from a shelter that truly cares about each and every pet, this is the place to adopt.
